Simon Says

with 2 comments

Simon says the Yanks have taken the 1st series after the All Star break, thanks to  a stellar 6 inning, 6 hits, 1 run, 1 BB, 9 K’s, 1 HR from newly acquired Brandon McCarthy, who  so  far  after 2 starts has put a sock in the mouth of the peanut gallery ( Me) who knocked the trade. B-Mac out pitched All Star Big Al Simon, 5 innings, 4 runs, 2 earned, and JJ Hoover, 1 inning, 4 hits, 3 runs in the 7-1 rout

Simon  says unfortunately all  the teams the Bombers are chasing and a few that  are starting to  creep  up in their rear view mirror also  won yesterday, sans the Angels.

Seattle, Baltimore, and Cleveland  3 teams ahead of the Yanks all  won. Toronto, Boston,  and Tampa Bay  all  teams breathing down the Yankees neck also  won  their games. Only Anaheim  who is firmly imbedded  as the best Wild Card team, and only 2 games behind Oakland, AL’s best record in the West division lost, to Seattle and King Felix.

The Yanks start  Sunday 2.5 behind Seattle, basically tied with Toronto for the play in game, and a half game behind Cleveland who  took a doubleheader from  the Tigers yesterday.

The Mac Attack

First  and foremost Cashman who I clobber on a daily basis, needs a tip of the cap  for grabbing McCarthy off the witness protection list in Arizona, also special  thanks to Tony LaRussa for trading him, and to  the Bomber’s vast  Sabermetric department for spotting McCarthy’s excellent xFIP stat, and career-best strikeout (20%) and ground-ball rates (55.3%) paired with his customary excellent command

McCarthy was 3-10 but even uglier, he  had a 5.01 ERA,  131 hits in 109.2 innings a 1.3 WHIP, 15 HR’s in 18  starts. On the positive side of the ledger he did have a 93 to  20 K to BB ratio, and he does have a sinker that when  effective can keep  the ball in the yard, which  he wasn’t doing in Arizona, but his K  and ground ball  rates afforded him a  very good 2.89 xFIP

Keep in mind

the 11 home runs he’s given up in the hitter friendly parks in Arizona and Colorado (versus the four he’s given up elsewhere) have a little more to do with the ledger standing as it does.

It’s not like he’s coming to  and easier park  to pitch, but he is in a sort of implied pennant race, and he seems like the type of character that might embrace living and working in NY, we hear his lovely wife is quite the Twitter Star, so the juice of being in the big City might give  them both a new lease on life.

His biggest asset yesterday was  his ability to  get batters to  chase pitches out of the strike zone

McCarthy lured the Reds into swinging at 23 of 51 pitches out of the strike zone, to good results. The 45 percent “chase rate” (how often they swung at a pitch out of the zone) was a season-high for him and his third-best rate over the past three seasons. It was the second-highest chase rate this season by the Reds against any starting pitcher this season (they had a 53 percent chase rate against Zack Greinke on May 27).

The Reds were 2-for-13 when chasing against McCarthy on Saturday.

McCarthy who now in 2 starts for the Bombers is sporting a 1.78 ERA, had two  1-2-3 innings (1st and 3rd), he worked around singles in the 2nd and 4th innings,  gave up his only run of the day in the 5th on a solo Hr from Heisey, he also  gave up  a double to Lutz following the Tater, but those were the only extra base hits from the Reds off B-Mac. McCarthy coughed up  a single in the 6th  but throughout the outing he struck out 9 batters and induced  5 ground ball outs, in his 99-71 pitch afternoon

The veteran may have found a solution, reincorporating a cutter that McCarthy said the D-backs asked him to scrap. Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild told McCarthy to put the pitch back in his toolbox, combining it Saturday with a mid-90s power sinker to keep the Reds off-balance.

“I was excited right when I got here; it was one of the first things they said,” McCarthy said. “We went over some things, and I said, ‘That actually works out very well, because it was something that I was going to say.’

“I knew there were things that I could be doing, that there were other sequences that I could be using that could get more out of my stuff. I was just even more excited that they looked at it as a positive.”

For what it’s worth

“He’s got top-of-the-rotation stuff,” McCann said. “We’re really glad to have him.”

Maybe we have the classic change of scenery scenario  here, or maybe we caught a team  with  2 of their best offensive players on the DL, but so  far  so  good with McCarthy

Simple Simon

The Yanks cashed in on a hanging breaking pitch from Simon to Beltran in the 2nd inning to  take a 1-0 lead, it was Beltran’s 10th HR, and he’s  8 for 30 in July with  2 Hr’s a double and 6 RBI’s. Jay Bruce dropped a Roberts fly ball to lead off the 3rd and Roberts scored on a Gardner single  to make it 2-0. Two singles, a passed ball, a Gardner sac fly and a Jeter single made it 4-1 in the 5th.

Three singles, followed by a 1 out two  run single by Johnson, and another Gardner sac fly mad it 7-1 in the 6th.

Warren pitched the 7th, Machine Gun Kelley traded in his BB gun, and fired off 1.1 spotless innings with  3 K’s, and Door Matt Thornton polished off the last 0.2 of an inning to nail down the win

The Yanks are 2 games over .500 at 49-47, today  they  go  for the sweep in game 97 with

Kuroda vs the very tough Cueto

Hopefully like Simon on Saturday he doesn’t have his best stuff

  1. the Yanks had 9 hits, only the Hr was for extra bases, so the singles brigade was in full force again.. they did manage to manufacture 6 runs, and apparently this Reds team can pitch, and it gets tougher today

the lack of power gets swept under rug with the win, so Kuroda has his work cut out for him, despite Votto, Phillips and to a much lesser extent Schumaker being out

hopefully the A’s and Angels, Rangers, Twins and Royals can pick up wins today, and the boys can steal another one from Cueto

good to see Kelley back to pitching well, especially after that lead off double to Hamilton, need everybody in that pen to be on their game

Try to find a bat flying under the radar like you did with McCarthy, Cashman…. when Ichiro goes in his slumps like he’s in now be nice to have some back up, especially one with some pop.. Still hoping the Philles just hand over Byrd and take back salary relief…Lee’s outing on Monday should also be interesting

need to replace Whitley, then insert him into the pen
