Rangers Snore Past Yanks

with 19 comments

Just when  you thought the  Yanks couldn’t suck  any worse then their 50-48 record, Girardi  rolls out this line-up

Brett Gardner LF
Derek Jeter SS
Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Carlos Beltran DH
Kelly Johnson 1B
Brian Roberts 2B
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Francisco Cervelli C
Zelous Wheeler 3B

Girardi had to be sleepwalking through a deep  dream all  weekend  as the Yanks managed to  over achieve and  score 14 runs in 3 games vs the  no hit, but good pitching Cincinnati Reds, so maybe he thought his 2014 Bombers were on a roll, and he could just run Ellsbury plus 8  beer league soft ball players out there and pick  up  a W from what on paper was an  even worse team  then last night’s Yankee excuse for a MLB squad.

Miles Mikolas, who entered the game with an 0-2 record and a 10.05 ERA was a prime candidate to pitch extended BP for the new lease on life 2nd half 3-0 Bombers..  Then  the alarm  clock  went off and Girardi  woke up, or judging by the way he handled Shane Greene in the 6th inning maybe he didn’t.

Even if  Joey Day Care was on his toes, the line-up card he took  to  home plate had 8 sleeping  duds in it, because in his fourth career start, Mikolas lasted 7.1 innings, surrendered two runs on four hits and picked up his first win since August 2012. It was his first career win as a starter.

Yup last night the Yankee Suck Meter reached a new high, or low, as Jolly Saint Mikolis just  rolled right over Joey’s replacement Ragtime Band 4-2.

What made the Bronx sleep fest even  worse, all  the teams  ahead of the Yanks,  Baltimore, and Seattle won, and one team coming up  faster then a runaway  train, the Boston Red Sox destroyed the Blue Jays, 14 to 1 to move now only 3.5 games behind the Bombers and Toronto fin the battle for 3rd place. The Bombers slipped 4 games behind the O’s, and 2.5 behind Seattle for the play in game

In fact it’s time to take Boston serious, they’re healthy, have all  their pitching intact, have most of their 2013 core back, plus 5 rookies that  are contributing,  they look like a much better team  then both the Yanks or Toronto.

“Once he kind of got rolling, that’s one of those things where guys get some confidence,” Yankees second baseman Brian Roberts said. “They get going and they start feeling better and better about themselves, especially in a place like this. I think that was one of those things for him — he just kind of got rolling, and we just couldn’t really string anything together.”

So let’s review, the Yanks work over All Stars  Al Simon and the Mighty Cueto, grind the Mighty Cueto off the bump on pitch  count in 5 strenuous innings, then  come out and make Mikolis look like King Felix, because anyway  you size it up, 7.1 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs is Felix like.

I think Mikolis got rolling the minute he saw the Yankee line-up, with Texy out hurt again, and McCann  getting the night off, because Joey Day Care needs to keep his guys healthy, there must have been a fight in the Texas pitcher and catcher meetings over who  would get the ball. How about this, play Bubba at  1st base so  there is some semblance of fear in that poor excuse for a MLB line-up  and you grab the 1st 2 games before Darvish really shuts you down on Wednesday?

Now the Human White Flag, Reverend Chase Whitley is all  that  stands between the Yanks and a Texas sweep, so Whitley’s outing is coming at  an unpropitious time…

After the Yanks scratched out a run in the 1st on a Beltran sac fly that  was more Jeter’s good base running then the pop up Beltran hit, the Mighty Mikolis sent 7 Bombers down in order before Ellsbury the only bright spot in this dismal  affair hit his 8th HR of the season to make it 2-1 in the 4th inning.

The Yanks had a chance to  open the flood gates in the 5th  after Cervelli and 18 Wheeler singled and Gardner walked to load the bases with  1 out… Set your clocks folks, as Jeter bounced into  a rally killing DP that took whatever little air NY had left in it’s tires out of this team’s ride to  their 4th  straight win

The next  9  batters sans a walk to Gardner rolled over like old dogs in the hot sun until  the boys mounted a feeble comeback in the 9th down 4-2. A Johnson single and  a McCann HBP put the tying runs on base but Solarte PH for Cervelli  and ended the game on an F/7

The contest was lost for good   in the 6th inning when Girardi  tried to  coax 6 full innings out of Greene who  was visibly on fumes after  he threw 9 pitches to get the 1st two outs, then was spent after an 8 pitch AB and a  base knock  to Smolinski had him up  to  17  for the inning and 105 pitches for the game.

Girardi  let Greene labor through two more AB’s,  8 more pitches that resulted in a 113 pitch outing and the walk  and single in that  2 AB sequence  tied the game plus put the go  ahead runs on base.

Greene should have been  gone after the Smolinski PA, but Girardi tried to get 2 more RHB’s out of the way before Thornton faced the LHB’s. Where’s Warren after the Smolinski AB? And how many times are they  gonna let Thornton drive the car into  the ditch before they  eat  that  2  year $7M deal  Cashman gave this dud in the off season? Thornton has 1 pitch,  a fast ball, and you can hang a week’s laundry on it,  we watched him all last season in Boston, they  wouldn’t even use him down the stretch

For every McCarthy, Cashman has  his Vazquez, Feliciano and Thornton’s that usually even the score, and with money on the books, DFAing Thornton is a long shot, even with  teams needing pitchers down the stretch you probably couldn’t give this guy away, even if you wanted to

Thornton immediately coughed up  two  debilitating singles to LHB’s and the game for all intents and purposes was over at  4-2

Once again the pitching wasn’t bad, Girardi trying to keep guys fresh mismanaged the pen, actually he played the hand he was dealt, but it’s tough to  win when  the GM stacks the deck  with jokers….

This was a must win with Whitley on the bump  tonight and Darvish toeing the rubber on Wednesday, you gotta get your earners in this game at  2-1, not run the wheels off Greene a kid still  wet behind the ears who was struggling with his pitch  count and fatigue thanks to  5 errors costing him extra pitches.. Anytime Thornton implodes it’s never a shock, in fact Thornton getting batters out is the anomaly

This and That

The Yanks had as many errors as hits, 5,  maybe Michael Kay  and Paulie Yuck Fest can see if that’s ever been done before

Cappy’s figurine doll lost a lot of value after his less then  stellar game, it looked like he should be resting not McCann, but the  Yankee give away made it imperative he be in the line-up, so much for managing a team  and not a farewell  tour

Let me be the first  to  mention, because those straight A’s the media laid on Gardner  in the first  half are blocking the pundits vision, but Gardy is 3 for his last 29 and his July swoon is now at  .208 /.333 / .358 / .691 and it’s only that good thanks to 10 base on balls..

Maybe somebody can help Ellsbury on offense. Beltran has to  do better then 8  for 36 with only 3 extra base hits and a 26% On Base. And can  we end the Johnson  playing first base debacle?

If you got one of these, I hope you enjoy it…

  1. I like the way Girardi snapped at Brickhouse or whoever asked the question about Thornton

“Well he’s my LH specialist”, which drives the bus over Cashman for sure

Having Thornton as a specialist is like going to Dr Kevorkian looking for a life saving medical procedure

I’m wondering if Cashman just throws shit against the wall and hopes it sticks, because a few things are still up there, they might be sliding down at a slow pace, but stuck nonetheless…

but the floor has a pile of shit from stuff that didn’t work and it kind of puts his win / loss record on those decisions about as good as the team’s run differential..

    Imagine a Texas sweep????

  2. my bad this is a 4 game series not a 3 game series.. the infamous Colby Lewis pitches vs McCarthy, don’t bunt against the shift on Colby boys…

the met mutt on WFAN didn’t have a problem with Greene working on fumes, of course not he’s a Met fan

the more i think about that loss, and how they played the worse it gets

    http://nomaas.org/2014/07/bombers-now-averaging-less-runs-per-game-than-in-2013/

“lets be honest” the fact Baltimore won’t spend money to upgrade their pitching boston with their core back and no pitchers on the injured list should be as good a bet to win the East as the O’s who have Tillman, then pot luck

  3. “Danks is owed roughly $35M through the 2016 season and torn capsules are usually the kiss of death. No one has returned from one to pitch to their pre-injury levels. It effectively ended the careers of Johan Santana, Rich Harden, Mark Prior, and Chien-Ming Wang, among others. Danks has been serviceable since the injury, but given the money left on his contract, I would hope he comes cheap in terms of prospects”.

lol yeah lets run to get him this from Heyman and Blind Boy

i’d say if Chicago wants to take back Arod, Sabathia, or Teixeira, then let’s do the deal….

Utley? really, they’d want your best prospects all 1 or 2 of them for another old guy.. pass not for this team Utley isn’t helping Beltran hit or Teixeira to stay healthy.. And with Tanaka complaining about pain in the elbow thinking he’s coming back is a pipe dream

  6. Just thinking the Yankee Brass must evaluate and sign players the same way they do for broadcasters.
How the fuck Paul O’Neill gets to sit in the booth and get paid for all of his bullshit nonsense is amazing.

  7. Hey Noogsie, lol…I’m stuck with the TV side tonight, between Gardner standing on first like he’s chained to a telephone pole, and Paulie yuck fest, I’m debating what’s more irritating

Finally these guys are starting to give him shit for not stealing bases, what’s up with that ?

Here comes my man Thornton, if this isn’t the worst offensive team in Ny history, I’d hate to have to sit through one that’s worse

Thankfully Thorny is 1 and done

Might as well attach metal clips to a car battery and clip the business end to your bare hand, with you feet in a pail if water, then hit the breaker, that would be less painful then watching this team try to hit

Give Headley a bat, even with jet lag he has to be better then what Girardi is running out there

Is it me or does Beltran look like he belongs in an old timers game?

  12. Great play by Johnson, for an infielder, strange he’s out there, I guess Girado thinks he might get him a big fly

Where’s O’Neill been this game had urgency 10 seconds after last night

Wanna see your family wtf, how about getting your job done, you have 6 months to play house, fuckin lame-o

  13. 3-0, loaded up, and they still can’t score..probably not our year

    Sal

    July 22, 2014 at 11:15 pm

  14. How can we find a guy like Arencibia…sure isn’t the Headless horseman, can we get Solarte back? How about Nunez?

Maybe this goof ball O’Neill thought it was over, but bases loaded 1 out, is still a long shot with this bunch

If Texas is the worst team in the Al, and they beat ny twice, what does that say for our guys?

Texas is probably saying can we just play these guys the rest of the year
