“I was at a point where I really felt like I wanted more pressure, more something,” McCarthy said. “Kind of the fight or flight thing; I’ve always responded well to it. To get into a situation now where that’s the case — especially doing it for a team like the Yankees — it’s ramped up all the way.”

Well Mac, you want pressure you got it, but first let’s enjoy the recent 6-1 record at  home against the  hitting challenged Reds and the completely hitting and pitching challenged Texas Rangers. After a 6-1 home stand with 3 more to go It’s very easy to go in opposite extremes as McCarthy and the Yanks moved 5 games over .500 with another  close call, a 4-2 win over the hapless Rangers

Your either whistling past the graveyard, oblivious to  who’s  been in the other dugout so far this home stand, or your riding the Mikey 21 bandwagon and are not impressed because the competition  hasn’t been the best MLB can offer

The Rangers and the Reds are both  2-8 in their last 10 games. Texas has won the first game of both series it’s played after the All Star  break, only to lose the last 2 in Toronto,  and the last 3 in NY, they’re  mired in last place in the AL West  with  the worst  record in the AL, actually their .392 winning percentage is the worst in all of baseball

The Reds are 1 game over .500, but have lost all  6 games they’ve played after the All Star break, so while McCarthy has put up  stellar numbers in his 3 starts for the Bombers, he hasn’t see real  AL  combat yet.

McCarthy had his 3rd consecutive 6 inning game, he went 6.1 vs Cleveland in his 1st outing where he gave up 9 hits 4 runs, but thanks to  a Teixeira error in the 1st inning all  3 runs the Indians scored were unearned. He later coughed up  a  double and single for a legit earned run in a game the Yanks won thanks once again to an Ellsbury 14th inning Tater.

B-Mac’s 2nd outing was his best in Stripes, 6 innings, 6 hits, 1 run, 9 K’s vs the Votto / Phillips-less Reds. Yesterday  he muscled past the Rangers 6 innings, 4 hits, 2 BB, 1 run, 5 K’s, 109-74 pitches. It looked like the Rangers had worked his pitch count to  the point where he might not get to or out of the 6th inning, but with 96 pitches going into  the 6th he pulled off a 1-2-3- 13 pitch  frame, then handed the ball off to  the Yankee earners who  were all  rested.

6 of 23 batters saw a three-ball count and 15 had at-bats of at least four pitches. McCarthy came into Thursday averaging 3.59 pitches per plate appearance, the seventh lowest among 94 qualified starters, so he wasn’t sharp and Texas forced him to work hard.

McCarthy has pitched 18.1 innings for the Yanks, given up  3 earned runs, that’s good for a 1.47 ERA. Cutters, sinkers, sliders, fast balls, xFIP, whatever, the bottom line he needs to keep  getting through 6 innings, and it would behoove him to  keep  the number 1 run intact, because I’m sure by now he noticed, he’s pitching for a team  that  can’t put up crooked number total bases within  1 AB. They have to  work like an  army of ants just  to  score a run, even in their own home  stadium band box.

Yesterday  they plated 4 runs, it was an  explosion of sorts.

Down  1-0 in the 4th Gardner led off with  a double, after Beltran  and McCann  couldn’t deliver a clutch  hit, Headley kissed the right field wall  for an RBI single to  tie it 1-1.

In the 5th Ichiro walked, Cervelli  the Yanks hottest hitter doubled him home for the 2-1 lead, then  eventually scored on  a Gardner sac fly to make it 3-1. Up  3-2 in the 8th inning Beltran  and McCann shocked the world by getting a single from Carlos and an RBI double from Bubba to give Robertson  some breathing room, 4-2, in the 9th

D-Rob closed it out but he didn’t want you to  relax so he laid a 1 out walk on Aducci with HR hitting Arencibia and maybe they’re best  all  around player Martin  coming up. Arencibia is all or nothing and the Rangers got nothing out of him as D-Rob punched the 1st baseman / catcher out. He also  got Martin to  go  down  swinging to  end it.

When  the Yanks have a lead and Betances and D-Rob are rested  there’s a good chance the game is over. Warren isn’t as automatic, yesterday  he coughed up  an Arencibia HR in the 7th  to  cut the lead to  3-2  with still 9 outs to  go.. Warren got the next  2 batters but Girardi  brought in Thornton to  throw 1 pitch to LHB Rougy Odor, luckily  the brilliant 20 yr old Rook  popped it up to  end the momentum  switch

Still it wasn’t easy, especially after Arencibia sobered up the masses with his Tater. One mistake and the game is tied, a bloop, or filling the error column and a blast and the hometown Heroes  are down one run, which  more often then not is like trying to  scale Mt. Everest.

This  and That

Ellsbury had a rare hitless game, but 2 thru 5 in the line-up  put up  a picket fence, with Gardner, Beltran, McCann and Headly all picking up 1 hit each. Cervelli  and Ichiro book ended the fence with a knock  each too.

The Yanks had 6 hits on the day, 3 were for extra bases, (3 doubles) there were no Taters which  still  boggles the mind how they  can’t seem to  find the seats in Yankee Stadium.

In the 7 games at home they have 4 HR’s, 2 by Ellsbury, 1 each  from Gardner and Beltran, man that’s really working for your total bases numbers.

The other day  I watched an little ant latch on to  a piece of bread crumb, which was twice the size of the ant. Didn’t matter, the little bastard carried that  food for at least 50  feet before disappearing into  a  hole in the rock where he must live. That’s how hard he had to  work  to  score 1 meal, reminded me of how hard it is for the Yanks to  score any runs….

The Yanks are now at .500 playing at home (24-24) And it’s probably a good idea to  put the first half behind you and use the 2nd half run differential 24 runs scored, 14 runs allowed, .857 winning %  as your barometer for this bunch. Over all  they’re 5 games over .500 and are 399 runs scored, 426 runs allowed

If the season  ended last night the Yanks would be on their way  to Anaheim for a 1 game playoff to  see who gets the last  League Division spot. With Toronto coming to  town the Yanks are 1 % point ahead of the Jays who just may have knocked the Red Sox into  sell mode by taking 3 of 4 from the team I thought was on their way  to catching the last Wild Card spot.

Up in Boston  they’ve started to  figure out who  to  keep,  who  to  sell,   and what  they  want to get back  for players they don’t feel are in their future..  Despite them being 8  games under .500, 9.5 games behind Baltimore, 6.5 games behind the Yanks for the last Wild Card spot, I still  think  they have enough talent to be spoilers, unless they just  back  up  the truck and move most of their depth.

Good news for the Yanks, they  won’t have to  face Stroman or Dickey in this series. Stroman has become the best  rookie pitcher in the division, and Dickey is always a long day  with his knuckle ball.

The Yanks get Buehrle, Hutchison and Happ. They  counter with Kuroda, Greene, and Whitley who  was mugged the last time he faced Toronto  up North. Forget that Toronto can’t win record in Yankee Stadium, and remember how hard it is for this 2014 Bomber Squad to  score runs..

You want pressure B-Mac, you got it bro….

  1. Another nice win, now the shit hits the fan

Should be real interesting with Boston playing Tampa, and Baltimore up in Seattle.. just keep adding W’s boys, Idon’t know how but gotta keep pitching your ass off

i’m not reading any rumors about Byrd coming to NY.. I know he’s old per mikey 21, but Cashman isn’t bringing Stanton or Trout here so forget any young player with upside, you want that develop it

right now your looking for a 2 month sprint to the finish line, so old guys with some gas left in the tank playing for a playoff spot will work just fine

this isn’t Boston or the Mets where your looking for that perfect match made in heaven player… Just upgrade and try to make that play in game, at least we can say we made there playoffs, and it gives the last 2 months some juice

or go watch the NFL do jumping jacks, listen to Jets drama, and Big Blue can we make a run with all new players stuff

It’s coming you can tell how bored the radio talkies are with baseball, it’s obvious if your in that business you want the money maker, NFL as the top talk subject, baseball is about as popular as soccer with the radio talking heads.

Poor Mikey 21 has 1 more day to endure before scooting up to Saratoga

I have 1 question, I don’t follow the NFL, or the PGA, and no interest in horse racing, but are those sport’s callers that chime in with Mikey as inept as the baseball callers? if so, no wonder Mikey is such a big shot in that format….

  2. The trade deadline is coming up so there are going to be lots of rumors-most of them false-in the next few days. It usually is someone who is never mentioned that finally gets dealt! I don’t think that there is a big
blockbuster deal for the Yanks,Cashman has said repeatedly that he is looking for incremental improvement-say that fast 3 times-and does not want to give up his best prospects for a change.Lets hope he is telling the truth-we don’t need Cliff Lee and his huge contract or another over the hill loser.
As bad as the Yanks have been, right now they are the 2nd wild card!-incredible.They have to take advantage of playing weaker teams, though the odds of them continuing to beat Toronto in NY have to be decreasing. The sux/rays series should be interesting,I never know who to root for since I hate both, maybe there will be some fights and suspensions-lol

  3. Hey Big D, yeah I hope your right about the series in Fla…

I’m glad Cashman isn’t selling the farm too… He’ll have to steal that RHB, or we’ll have to go the rest of the way as is….then maybe he’ll bring up the Refsynder kid, not that I’m pining for that move.. Almonte put 3 HR’s over the fence in the last 2 days maybe they bring him up

i’m still hoping for Byrd, not sexy, but he can hit the ball far, as is, the pitchers have little to worry about, word has to be out on Beltran, and McCann unless he gets the perfect mistake has warning track power

Tex news today will get the ball rolling one way or the other, lets hope he doesn’t give away a decent kid, glad they backed off the Kennedy for 2 1st rounders deal

  4. Big Papi came out of the game last night in the middle of an at bat when he felt something near his rib cage. Could be the end of those guys if he’s on the shelf for a while.
Mushnick goes after our Mikey hard today, reporting about how shitty he treats his callers. As if the world doesn’t know that already.
also, reading and hearing about the brilliance of Cashman in using new fangled sabermetrics to predict that both Headley and McCarthy were about to go on an upswing in terms of performance and therefore would be good guys to acquire. Wonder if he was using the same equation last year when he signed Youkilis for 12 Million. I still think he’s a little piss ant.
Cervelli is one of the more dangerous hitters on the team right now and Cashman has done nothing but try to get rid of him for years.
    Big series this weekend..

    July 25, 2014 at 10:36 am

  5. hey Noogsie, spot on with Cashman.. yes he uses the Metrics, they have the biggest metric payroll in baseball, but you only hear when the metrics work in his favor..

you notice he still brings in Brand manes or Brand name lites, it’s part of what intrigues the pink hats in NY…

He’s got no use for a thug like Marlon Byrd, who can hit the ball 500 miles, or Melky, or a poser like Cano

let’s not forget what the metrics said about Beltran and McCann…. Cashman has deep pockets to work with and an owner who knows it doesn’t matter how much he spends his market base will pay the freight as long as they even fake a playoff run

let’s be honest lol.. they should be rebuilding with prospects, if they were full tilt metric, D-Rob would be in Anaheim with Taylor Lindsey and right-hander R.J. Alvarez driving the NY farm system up a few notches.. then resign D-Rob in the off season

see what Kuroda will bring him, maybe another Michael Brantley, with all those metrics he should be able to locate a diamond in the rough

go get the Cuban’s Cashman, use your best asset, Hal’s money….

    July 25, 2014 at 11:10 am

  6. Thanks I’ll check the mush mouth article… Mikey gets all part time sports fans on his show, he’d get run off the air if they let guys who knew what the hell they were talking about on the phone…

    July 25, 2014 at 11:12 am

  7. Funny how Ortiz called his big HR tirade up in toronto.. maybe he knew he could juice up and beat the test, then he hurt himself.. He will be in Fla, so all those pains might just go away, after tonight

    July 25, 2014 at 11:14 am

  8. I wouldn’t mind Byrd manning right field. He’d be a major improvement over Ichiro and his 0 HRs & 11 RBIs. Yeah, we need another starter, but at the top of the list is a bat. Preferably, a thumper for Right. It’s amazing how many hits it takes for these “Bombers” to score a run. And if we have to contend with this kind of offense, why is it that it takes so long for Gardener to decide to run? Jeez! It’s like he’s standing waiting for the Short Line Bus to pull in before he takes off. Elllsbury has to take him for a walk talk and set him straight. It would be nice to take 2 out of 3 this weekend from the Jays…….where do I sign up for that?

    July 25, 2014 at 12:27 pm

  9. Hey Bondsie.. sign on the dotted line… Yeah I’m with you on Byrd, power guy, we could use a guy who looks like he just got out of prison, these guys they have now aren’t scaring anybody…

Just checked in on blind Boy’s chat, he spit out this gem

I’m thinking they’ll end up with Danks for Cervelli”

Man if Cashman did that we’d have to pull a sonny in the toll booth on that prick….

    July 25, 2014 at 3:54 pm

  10. Mkay just announced Capuano starting Saturday,Greene on Sunday,Whitley going to the bullpen.

    July 25, 2014 at 5:04 pm

  11. Yeah I heard that Big D… Capuano wow, couldn’t make the Boston bull pen….

what a brainiac move that was on a 3-0 count… way to put this one out of reach early Hiro…

    July 25, 2014 at 7:22 pm

  12. I heard a rumor that Stenchiro hit a 3 run homer that turned the game around-could it possibly be true???-lol

    July 25, 2014 at 10:08 pm

  13. hahaha.. Hey man we get an assist on that Tater

Hard to believe, that with hardly any Sabathia, and Pineda, half yr with Tanaka, hardly no McCann and Beltran, no Soriano, that Boston with all their core sans Ellsbury, and their can’t miss rookie crop, they had noi Victorino, but you could set your watch to he wasn’t having another season like 2013, that NY is still in it and Boston has quit on their stool
