Cy Fi!

It wasn’t to long ago  teams,  around baseball  and their fan bases, specifically Larry Lucchino and his Nitwit Nation would scoff at  how the Bombers went about their business, large payroll, buy all  the best  free agents because they  could, whether it was a good idea or not.

Enter August 1st and not an ill  word out of our angry cousins to  the North, (who  spent yesterday  licking their wounds after losing  the weekend  series to  the dreaded Evil Empire)  at the Detroit Tigers, who  somehow surreptitiously moved in and poached David Price from  the Tampa Bay Rays

Price going to Detroit allows the Tigers the luxury of now simultaneously owning the last 3 AL Cy Young Award winners,  and what  a surprise, all  3 will  pitch vs the the Band-aid Bombers this week.

Last night Round 1 went to  the Bombers 2-1 in what  appeared to be an off night for Cy 1 Max Scherzer. In typical 2014 Bomber fashion  the boys managed 9 hits, (only 1 of them an extra base knock, Ellsbury double) off Scherzer in 7 innings of work,  but they only plated 2 runs.

Of course by now every baseball  fan in America has seen “The Catch” by rookie Ezquiel Carrera who  took over centerfield after the Tigers flipped former Yankee prospect Austin Jackson to  the Mariners in the 3 team Price deal.

Ellsbury was on his way  to  a no out bases clearing extra base hit when the Tiger plebe leaped and snagged the rocket line drive. Only 1 run scored on the bases loaded sac fly terminating any delusions of grander from the Bomber peanut gallery that possibly the homies could blow the doors off Scherzer and his 1st place Tigers

In fact it looked bleak  after the Ellsbury F/8 when Beltran lined a 1st pitch  change up  that 2nd baseman Kinsler nabbed for out number 2 leaving only the underachieving Bubba McCann left standing in an  effort to turn a bases loaded no out situation into a crooked number score in the 3rd inning of a now 1-0 game

On the 2nd pitch of the AB, Scherzer threw a change up  that  ran inside to McCann and the offering  sped up Bubba’s bat, he turned on it and lined a clean RBI single to  right field for a 2-0 lead. Headley grounded out to  2nd base to  end the inning and Scherzer’s defense came to  the rescue and limited the Bombers to just  the 2 runs.

Not in your wildest dreams would you  envision  2 runs being enough to win vs this Tiger offense, but somehow Retread turned Yankee Ace Brandon McCarthy 5.2 innings, 5 hits, 1 run and 4 of his bull pen running partners held Miggy, Victor, and the Motor City boys to only  the single digit, and the Bombers locked down their 3rd win in a row.

The Win kept the Yanks 5 games behind the Buck O’s who  beat  their State rival  the Nats. The Jays had the night off so  the Bombers picked up  a 1/2 game on the Canadians and NY is now just 1 game behind Toronto for that  last Wild Card spot.

The surging Rays lost to  the A’s and that slid them 4.5 games in back of the Yanks in the AL East.

Boston is counting their money in last place while Pink Hat Nation  continues to buy the prospect hype, and the recent Y0-Yo Cespedes acquisition. Owner John Henry and his CEO organ  grinder Larry Lucchino continue to  fill their lip stick on a pig ballpark to  the tune of the highest ticket prices in baseball  despite them already  throwing in the towel.

As we know they jettisoned  3 of their best  pitchers for a yr and a half rental in Yo-Yo, the 2014 underachieving Allen Craig, the goofy but talented Joe Kelly, and a promising LH pitching prospect  Fast Eddie Rodriguez

Mac’s Effort

McCarthy can’t seem to get out of the 6th inning as a Bomber, so  Girardi  and Larry the Stable Guy Rothschild are getting quality more so  then  quantity out of the former D-Back. In 5 starts for NY McCarthy has a 2.08 ERA, the Yanks have won all  5 games he’s started since he donned the Stripes on July 9th vs Cleveland.. He’s given up  33 hits in 30.1 innings, but has struck out 28 and only walked 8, so he’s missing bats, and getting ahead in the count. Putting guys away  is another story, hence the abundant pitch  counts.

Last night he had 8 K’s, 8 ground ball outs, and 1 line drive out, the Tigers did nothing  but get punched out or hit grounders right at people. The one Tiger run scored after a Prado  throwing error, so McCarthy went 5.2 innings gave up no earned runs. He’s no  doubt been one of Cashman’s better returns from a trade…

McCarthy almost got  himself 6 complete innings, but a 2 out single in the 6th to Kelly sent him to  the showers, Door Matt Thornton came in to  get the last out. D-Matt has throw no hit ball in his last  3 outings (1.1 innings) Girardi  has kept a short leash on the old Loogy  and it’s been paying off.

Adam Warren has been a bit shaky recently but he went 1 inning unscathed last night, his only blemish was a 2 out double to  defensive star Ezequiel Carrera. Machine Gun Kelley mowed the Bengals down in the 8th, and D-Rob looked much better caging the Tigers 1-2-3 in the 9th, punching out 2 in the process, it was D-Rob’s 30th  save

Betances was given the much needed night off.

This and That

Everybody but Beltran  and Drew had knocks last night.

Gardzilla continued to  terrorize MLB pitching with 2 knocks, he’s now up  to  .286. Scherzer kept Gardner off the HR board, he’s whacked 5 Taters in the last  7 games

Ellsbury who has been mired  over his last 40 some AB’s, picked up  2 knocks, he hit the ball hard all night, and lost  a chance to  blow the game open in the 3rd when Carrera the Tiger cub robbed him of a triple, or possibly an inside the park Salami

Bubba McCann had the key game winning knock in the 3rd, Prado, Jeter, Headley, and Ichiro  also joined the hit parade with  a knock  each.. Ichiro  scored on the Ellsbury F/8

Cy 2 David Price vs Kuroda tonight

Price vs Yanks

Kuroda vs Tigers Hiro  will need Mr Split to be working, the Tigers aren’t bashful when it comes to  barreling up Kuroda

  2. A very satisfying win last night boys. Going up against this threesome I didn’t have much faith. Even with the new mojo lately. I’m going to the game on Wednesday night, so I’ll get an up close & personal view of the “New & Improved” Yanks. Hey, wouldn’t it be something if……

  3. I enjoyed watching the game even with Knucklehead Smith in the booth doing the color. Is Kay Jerry Mahoney? Bullpen looks great and “Robinsin” is going to make big bucks next year. Can’t we reup him ahead of time like other teams would? At least try.
Nice to see Joba with the Wall Street look. That would be the Occupy Wall Street derelict look.

  4. hahaha.. hey fellas

Bondsie take photos, and enjoy the game bro..leave the Latino chicks alone, or not…missed you this weekend, although I don’t think you would have come back North, southern hospitality is 2nd to none, especially for guys who aren’t retired like me…

Noogsie.. we may have let that ship sail on the extension, now it’s gonna cost $15M, rumors are they’ll tender him a QO.. coulda had him for a cheaper rate with an extension, now they’re gonna have to go yr to yr..

or give him a contract.. Knucklehead Smith hahaha.. had some good takes on what hitters do and don’t..

if they leave the me stuff alone he’s tolerable.. I’m with you on him not being so annoying, amazing how I let shit roll off my back when they’re winning..

We might have a some guests soon fellas a Red Sox fan, but a good one, and a friend of mine not a troll blogger… and one of the Don’s posse, a kid that he’s trying to help in the music business, just found out the kid is a rabid baseball fan.

the site is public now so we’ll have easier access for those guys.. I did tell the Red sox fan to go for it so that should be fun.. My old buddy Johnny alto will be able to log on now too, for some reason he had trouble getting into the private settings

Johnny is a good baseball man but old school with the tech stuff. so we’re more user friendly .. I think …

  5. just heard on Mauseless’s show that the Phils wanted the Yanks top 2 prospects for Byrd.. jeez….can’t do that.. We’d have a hard time getting Byrd for a bag of balls with all the money Cashman spent on the Of… plus I’m still holding out for Melky, I’m not gonna hold my breath on it, at least until I pay the life insurance policy on me

  6. http://nomaas.org/2014/08/brett-gardner-keeping-playoff-hopes-alive/

I’m not sure i’d go as far as these guys but Gardzilla has been a lot better then I gave him credit for… At 3.5 WAR and @ $7M per win which is what the accountants figure is what wins are worth in 2014, he’s a $20M per player

I’m not sure how they compute what a win s is worth or that it’s even that accurate, some guys are underpaid some grossly overpaid using that saber metric formula.. it’s probably an average after all the numbers are thrown in a hat

bottom line Gardner is earning his money, not sure anybody else is, Ellsbury’s career numbers are skewed because of his 2011 season, which he’s never come close to before or after that yr.. Stull think he had a doctors prescription for some sort of PED, it did come a yr after his ribs were busted up by Beltre and he may have legally been given permission..

Of course the Nation would dispute that fact, but I can’t find a player who had that type of jump in stats.. I mean Ellsbury hitting 32 HR’s? He’s lucky if he hits 15, and that’s playing 81 games in NY…

  7. Sal your pal Thornton is now on the Nats,Yanks let him go on waivers, brought up Rich Hill-sounds like a salary dump since he was signed for next year,he actually had been pitching well lately.Yanks are only team in mlb history to face 3 Cy Young winners in a row-so far so good.GARDY really has been the Yanks best player all season,he finally threw away his wet newspaper.Ellsbury has been hitting in bad luck,he has hit some shots that have been caught, especially in Boston and that miracle catch last night. He is not
a home run hitter.Jobber certainly has a new look and looks like he has gained a bit of weight but he has gotten the job done for the Tigers.

Thornton, Cashman saves $4m.. Bring up that kid with 30k’s in 13 innings

Kay and Knucklehead Smith are acting like they lost a vintage Louie Arroyo

Hope Jake isn’t hurt to bad…the kid was hitting the ball hard

It’s amazing this could possibly be Gardner’s team, isn’t that what blind boy said

  11. Sal I knew you would enjoy the news, you never wanted him here in the first place,The Yanks were smart,
they waited until he started doing well to dump him.The Yanks signed 3 guys to 2 year deals-Stenchiro,
Thornton and Ryan-I am sure they would love to dump all of them!! I think McCann now has 3 homers off Price this year! Now all the Yanks need to do is pick up Keppinger-lol-I think he is retired.

Good stuff from Knucklehead your right Bondsie

  15. Sal Keppinger was very good for the Rays,I also thought he would be good for the Yanks-instead he went to the WSox and disappeared! Reynolds was offered a chance to come back to NY,but did not want to and went to the Brewers.Yanks hanging tough, every game is struggle with these guys.Huff does not inspire a lot of confidence.

  16. That’s true on Reynolds Big D, He didn’t think he’d get a loot of playing time.. One way he would have signed, don’t offer him a minor league contract, which is what both NY and the Brewers did, and if IO remember he thought he’d get more playing time there

he was probably right.. tough loss last night, leaving Kuroda in to long g still bugging me
