Win Win

As the season whittles  down  to  a measly 7  games  the buzz around the Yanks despite them  still being mathematically alive for a Wild Card isn’t the pipe dream for a playoff  berth, it’s Derek Jeter, but yesterday the Capt had a co-star, Masahiro Tanaka, who made a triumphant return as the Yanks beat  the Jays 5-2

Jeter still gets the most attention, his Ab’s are greeted with loud standing ovations that  drown out the clicks from what  seem like  40 thousand phone cameras flashing in unison and the photo opts are usually followed by the De-rek Je-ter chant that has become the norm for most of his 560 AB’s.

The volume has been turned up to maxed out on this final Jeter home stand and in true Jetarian  fashion  Cappy hasn’t disappointed. The Captain has thrown together his best  streak of the 2014 season going 9 for 21 in his last  5 games.  He’s 8 for 17 in his last 4 Home Games, with 2 hits apiece in all four

Jeter’s 1st hit came in the 5th inning, a single that followed Brett Gardner’s 17th HR of the season. The Face’s Tater  was the 15,000th HR hit by a NY Yankee in case your counting.

Cappy’s biggest knock of the day  came in the 7th inning with  the Bombers hanging on to  a slim 2-1 lead. Brett The Face led off the inning with a double, Jeter then capped off a 7 pitch AB by drilling a 78 MPH slider to left field for the clutch RBI double, his 2nd 2 bagger in two  days

Bubba McCan’t who tied the game at  1-1 with his 21st HR of the season in the 1st inning then followed Jeter’s extra base knock  with his 2nd HR (#22) of the day, this one a 2 run blast that tacked on a few more insurance runs giving the Bombers a solid 5-1 lead with  6 outs to  go  and Betances and “Robinson” both  waiting in the wings.

Ta-Nak- On-Wood

Jeter is the present show, but the Bombers future hung on their 25 yr old Ace’s outing, his first  since July 8th when the Indians pounded him for 10 hits and 5 runs in a 5-3 loss, Tanaka’s 4th L of the season

I think most of us just  wanted to  see him emerge from the 70 pitch outing healthy, a dominate performance would be gravy. I’d say  5.1 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 4 K’s, no BB’s was pretty damn good.

His 64th pitch was a ringing single up  the  middle by Reyes in the 6th inning. The dangerous Joey Bats then hit a slow grounded to Drew at  2nd base, a simple turn and throw to Jeter who  was motoring toward the 2nd base pillow and a good throw by Cappy to Cervelli may have turned 2, but instead Drew followed his momentum and tried to  tag Reyes in the base line.

Reyes slowed down enough to  delay Drew’s tag and flip  to  first  so Bautista beat the throw prolonging Tanaka’s inning and adding numbers to his pitch  count. On the 70th pitch of the day Encarnacion hit a weak  single through the open / shifted 2nd base hole and that  was it for Tanaka

Tanaka never threw more then 14 pitches in an inning, he reached that total twice in the 1st  and 4th innings. He threw 8 pitches in the 3rd and 13 in the 5th, he was at 9 pitches with 1 out in the 6th  when Warren came in to shut down the Jays rally.

His strike % was very good, 71% in the 1st and 4th innings, 75% in the 2nd and 3rd. 8 of his 13 pitches were for strikes in the 5th inning that’s a 61% rate. Tanaka unleashed 18 sinkers, 19 splitters, more curve balls percentage wise then we usually saw from him in the past 11, and he rounded out his bag of tricks with  7 fast balls  mostly 91 but he did touch 93 on the gun, 7 sliders, and 8 cutters.

Hopefully he feels good today  and his next outing would come in Boston either on 5 days rest Friday or an extra day off which would make his last 2014 start on Saturday. My guess he gets the extra day, the Yanks are being very careful  with their future…

It was good to  see Warren back on his game he was a lights out 1.2 innings with  3 K’s

The Yanks finish  up  the home stand with 4 games vs the O’s starting tonight

Right now Oakland and KC hold down the wild card game, Seattle is 1.5 games off the pace, Cleveland in 3.5 out and the Yanks 4.5. The Bombers tragic number is 4.

All  we can hope for is KC, Oakland, Cleveland, and Seattle go into historic dives and the Yanks run the table. KC plays the Indians 4 more times so somebody ahead of the Yanks is gonna win some games, my guess is, we root for a split or Cleveland to  take 3, Seattle loses almost every game.

Because of the Cespedes trade I’m rooting for Oakland to make the playoffs, it’s bad enough Beane handed Boston a slugger, the last thing we want is for the Angry Cousins to  resign Lester

And solid playoff run will only elevate Lester’s worth, which might deter Boston from inking him

  1. finally something to smile about this season. keep loading the wagon boys, lets whip up on Buck and wipe out the Beaners over the weekend.

Mariners vs Jays I guess I’ll root for a sweep despite wanting the Yanks to finish 2nd and rooting for Cano….The Mariners were 1 big slugger away from making the playoffs with ease, I’m hoping they steal Cespedes if Boston doesn’t extend him or they go after Tomas

i doubt the Yanks mess around with Tomas, they can’t afford to overpay another OFer

  9. Donnie B–not disagreeing with you about Buck–but have you taken a gander at Joey the Spin’s face lately?
He’s what I would call having a case of “Zactly” —- Girardi’s face looks “Zactly” like his ass.
