Yanks Cap Off The Season

with 17 comments

“I think, in a sense, it’s not going to be a huge deal, because Derek wasn’t really pushed out, or not re-signed — he retired,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “I think sometimes it’s different when a person’s traded or a team doesn’t re-sign him. But when a guy retires, it’s a much different feel. It’s not going to be difficult, in a sense.”

Leave it to Joey the Spin to  construct yet another woven tangled web, as we’ve said before here at the Shop, he’d make a great White House Press Secretary. Wally Mathews over at ESPN  disputes Girardi’s claim that Cappy won’t be easy to  replace, the scribe dives into more of the intangibles that Jeter will leave behind

What Girardi really meant was statistically the Yanks can buy another SS that  will put up better numbers then what Cashman has run out there the last 2 seasons at that position.

“You want to be known as someone that had respect for the game,” he said. “Respect for your teammates, respect for the fans, respect for the media. Played the game hard. But for me, I’m happy being known as a Yankee. That’s the only thing I’ve ever wanted to be, was the shortstop of the New York Yankees, and I had an opportunity to do that for 20 years. Being remembered as a Yankee is good enough for me.”

Unfortunately right now really top  rated prospects that “always wanted to be Yankees” like say Garin Cecchini aren’t being drafted by the Yanks, so being remembered as a Yankee is getting few and far between. Free Agents coming to NY come for the money not the laundry in this era, Jeter signed on before the Monopoly Money era, so Wally is right we’ve probably seen the last Derek Jeter

Rookie third baseman Garin Cecchini, who leaped in an attempt to field Jeter’s final hit but was unable to corral the chopper: “I saw the ball off the bat. We’re taught that when it hits right down, you’re supposed to come charging, so I came charging in. The thing was up in the stratosphere, you know? I tried to make a play, barehand it, and throw him out — or throw Ichiro (Suzuki) out (at the plate), whichever one wasn’t closest to the base. I’m happy for him. He’s had an awesome career. He was my childhood idol growing up. To be on the same field with him, that’s an honor. I had Yankees pinstripes in my bathroom. I have a bobblehead of him in my room. I’m glad I got to shake his hand. I told him, ‘Congrats, and thanks for being a good role model for kids like us.’ He didn’t say anything (on his way off the field). He just tipped his cap to me and nodded, and I tipped my cap right back at him. I’ll remember that for the rest of my life.”

First  Thoughts on Hot Stove

Too bad Tanaka didn’t end his season the way Pineda did, our worse nightmare confirmed, will  this guy  ever be as good as he was the first  few  months of his maiden voyage season?

The Yanks should try to resign Chase Headley as an ARod / Tex caddy, if they  don’t, we’re looking at  a combination of Pirela, Prado and possibly Refsynder as a potential infield and right field  caddy’s for Beltran, and  both  aging and broken down corner infielders.

I have  no problem with starting to  bring up  the young kids, but if they’re not ready we have no  back-up plan, just more Solarte, Roberts, Youkilis, and Ryan’s.. I know Ryan has ink  for 2014, but that  was a waste of money

Not a peep about Kang from the ?NY pundits yet, just Hardy Hanley and rthe notion that  somehow NY has the wherewithal  to  trade for Starling Castro, that’s a pipe dream, Theo has much better options then Cashman’s farm system, and Betances will be the first name out of any GM’s mouth Re: a trade scenario

Source is in Korean so I won’t post a link. Kang is eligible to be a FA if his team decides to make him available with posting fee. He’s 27 and known to be a power and solid defensive SS. He’s having a career yr with 36 HRs and 100 RBIs in just 102 games. This is his 9th yr as a pro but 7th as regular. First two yrs are his rookie yrs and didn’t play full season. He has 83 HRs for past 2 seasons and this season playing 354 gms.

“Robinson” needs to  be resigned, offer him the QO, hope he refuses, that  will  slow down his market like it did for Drew and Morales and he might become available at  a discount, then grab him at 3 yr’s for $27M. At that price you can  flip him once Betances is a sure shot and Lindgren is ready  to  set up

back  later

  1. Glad the boys won yesterday, now onto the hot stove where I don’t think they go nuts, but they need to make a few moves

We can not stand pat and let them just say ARod is back so we’re set, that’s another Texy scenario just waiting to erupt

also let’s pray that Stanton stays put in Miami, if he hits Free Agency after his 2016 season He’ll cash in with Tex’s money off the books and Sabathia and ARod 1 yr removed from their contracts expiring

The Yanks will outbid LA for Stanton, it’ll be another Albatross contract on the back end but by then only the Doughboy deal will be killing the payroll

If Miami decides to flip Stanton we have to hope said team be it LA, Texas, Boston, Seattle, or the Cubs who all have better farm systems and money to overpay him don’t grab him

  2. Barriooots’ Rant on facebook after watching another bosucks midget’s bad mouthing The Cap on TV, this am,
    Go Mama Go !!!!

What’s on my mind? Okay … Mike Lupica has shot his mouth off one too many times about the Farewell Captain tour of Derek Jeter this year being “wretched excess”. Apparently he still doesn’t get it, so I’m going to have to tell him why this year of Derek Jeter has been a good thing. So here goes…

It is about d#‪#‎n time that our kids had a sports hero to look up to who gives his all, tells the truth, keeps his word, works through problems, and succeeds by being a good guy, a respectful guy, and a guy who follows the rules. We have enough cynical, critical ugly-on-the-inside guys like you.

We need MORE men, and certainly more role models, who show our kids that we celebrate “Good” and “Fair” and “Right” and that if we try hard enough, we can win honestly. Is it really that hard for you to let us have a Hero, and something positive on the evening news? You haven’t said a peep about how much negative cr@p we have to see everytime we turn on the evening news about men who beat their wives, kill their dogs and take every drug they can find to be stronger and meaner. That’s not worth complaining about, is it Mike? No apparently not.

Let us celebrate the fact that we were able to see one of baseball’s greats (in many statistics baseball’s greatest) while he was alive and grinning, running as hard as he could to reach first base. Because Derek Jeter wasn’t a home run hitter, really … he was a guy who figured out where the hole in the defense was, hit the ball there as hard as he could, and ran as fast as he could, even when he didn’t think he had a chance of beating the ball to first base. And there is a lesson in that kind of a hero. He won by always trying. And now his Take 2 Foundation will continue the effort. That is what I want our kids to see, and that is worth all of the row boats, and sculptures and tributes you’re so sick of seeing.

You go ahead and be you, Mike Lupica, but let the rest of us be us. We ADMIRE Derek Jeter, and if we want to give him a row boat, we will. It goes without saying that no one is ever going to give YOU a row boat.

  3. beat me to it Donny I just read it and was ready to paste it in great stuff… thanks Bari

  4. I can’t believe these phony ass media guys didn’t grill Girardi when he said we’re getting younger

Where joe, where are you getting younger? your bringing in a 40 yr old has been to play 3rd base everybody is a yr older, and your right fielder and 1st baseman are already too old

then he says we have to wait until spring training to evaluate ARod, but we have Prado who can play different positions, and Ryan.. Ryan shouldn’t even be on the team

Prado couldn’t make it through this season what makes him think he makes it through next seaon by grinding him down?

My guess Refsynder and Pirela will get Drew and Headley’s job… McCann gets the back up 1st base gig

ARod is role player i don’t want to hear 1 word about him being their 3rd baseman, and Teixeira has more then wrist injuries my 93 yr old mother stays on her feet longer then Teixeira

he did say they have pitching issues so that might mean they do go after one of the big 3

Tanaka getting hammered might have sent up a red flag

    nobody grilled him on “Robinson”

unless you grill Girardi his pressers are as useless as a credit card with zero balance

my fear is somebody will offer Headley more money or he won’t want to share time with ARod or play 1st base unless they money whip him

I’m rooting for Oakland, we need Lester to have a great post season need him to go deep into it again, it’ll raise his value beyond what Boston wants to pay him or he’ll be tired

Lester owns the Yanks we need him out of the division

Sign Robinson, sign Andrew Miller, expensive but Miller, Betances, “ Robinson” that’s as lights out as it gets

bring up Lingren as the 2nd LHP out of the pen, sign McCarthy and Shields, then get Kang and Melky or Yasmani Tomas lol….

not one of these idiots asked about Kang or Tomas,

these media guys just want ARod intel, that’s too bad he’s nothing but a bench player at this point

I’m sick of Girardi pressers.. I don’t want to hear from him until next March.. they need to grill that little schmuck Cashman

  5. If Gardner had an abdominal strain since July and continued to play injured, then why in hell was he repeatedly lifting up a huge container filled with Gatorade over his head and dumping it on people?
If he was hurt and he was that friggin dumb, then he needed to be hurt a little in his wallet.

  6. Sal while you were busy over the weekend,it came out that GeniusJoe had a team meeting just before Jeter’s last game at the Stadium. Supposedly he was critical of certain players for being out of shape and not dedicated enough to winning. There was some criticism of Joe for having the meeting before Jeter was getting gifts from the Yanks and with many players there who will be gone as free agents. The game itself
Saturday was an abomination, the clowns the Yankees had on the field were worse than what would be found in March in Tampa.Tanaka did not look sharp at all,but his defense was atrocious. You just have to wonder why they even bothered to have him pitch in such a meaningless game. The Jeter watch is finally over,he deserved all the accolades,it also helped cover up what a lousy season the team had-now no more cover, time to get the team back on track, back to the playoffs. Todays conference had an Aroid theme. The best thing for Aroid and the Yanks would be for him to say he cannot play anymore due to his
injuries-he would collect all of his $61 million, the insurance would pay it and the Yanks would have the money off the books.Of course, that won’t happen. No one knows if Aroid is even capable of playing ball anymore, especially after not playing for a year.It also puts the Yanks in a bind, not knowing if he can play
3b,only dh or not be able to compete at all.So they can’t really plan or decide if they need a 3bman-Joe was asked many times if Aroid can back up at 1b,no answer. He may need to just dh which the Yankees have been using to spread around the roster instead of having one full time dh,like they used to.When the Yanks were winning, they had full time dhs=Matsui,Strawberry,CDavis, etc who strengthened the lineup and
were key factors in the wins. Todays conference was really a waste of time since the Yanks have not had their organizational meetings where they decide what their future course of action will be.Its going to be a very long and interesting off season.

  7. Hey fellas thanks for all the updates, per usual I’m in agreement with your takes

I’m overseeing a medical procedure for moms at the hospital, so I’ll be out of the office for most of the day

Thought this Sherman piece was good.. How can they call Arod the third baseman if they don’t know what they have until spring training.. Headley makes sense, and I think Victorino money gets it done, Sherman threw down that number, in fact I like all his numbers for the free agents

I’d rather see Melky or Tomas instead of Young, but they can get Young cheap so Tomas or Melky might be a pipe dream

Drew on a pillow contract for $4 or $5m I can see, not crazy about it but they need to clear salary so we won’t be getting what we think they need

Also it’s a joke that Gardner is the nominee from the Yanks for the Hank Aaron Award, that’s just sad

Thanks boys great stuff see you later

  8. Who needs Cespedes lol

    September 30, 2014 at 10:15 pm

  9. Shields had 88 pitches when Yost yanked him, bad move, Yost got Joey-itus

Melvin almost blow it catching Soto, Lester tiurned into Koufax once Norris started to catch and they started to use the curve ball

Helps to have a 4 run lead.. Nightmare for KC

  11. well that game turned on a dime in a hurry

Beane will get killed for trading Cespedes, but they had so many injuries, and the catching defensive position killed them as much as anything with Jaso out, the Royals robbed them blind on the base paths

Lester left a lot of money on the table after that bad outing 7-3 you gotta close that out

  12. Big Mikey 21 with high praise for Lestah yesterday. I swear, that clown has a prediction average lower than Drew’s Batting Average. I heard him the other day with his Ryder Cup analysis. Now he knows more about golf strategy than Tom Watson–winner of 8 Majors and in the Golf Hall of Fame. In golf, you lose when the other guy or guys play better. There is no defense in golf.
I also love his end of the year “take” on “Grandisin”—throw out August and April stats on him and he did ok this year. So… August and April account for a third of the season. Problem is—in any sport—you have to play them all. Throw out your 6 bad holes in a round of golf—-throw out 2 bad innings if you’re a baseball pitcher when you have 4 good ones—throw out 20 minutes of a football game when your quarterback throws 3 pick 6’s.
I betcha the Yankees would like to throw out Mariano’s 9th inning of Game 7 in the 2001 World Series against Arizona. Or Mazeroski’s Homer in the 9th inning of Game 7 in 1960, since they outplayed the Pirates the entire series. Or many more—Mariano against Boston in 2007–or Cleveland a decade earlier.
I know he sure as hell didn’t throw out the bad turnovers Geno Smith and the Jets had last Sunday

  13. lol.. hey noogsie, when Mikey talks baseball I put on a laugh track, him picking post season favs is a joke, especially after he mentions he has little interest in the MLB playoffs with the NY teams out of it.. He wouldn’t know how any of these teams are playing

Why get pundits on your show if your gonna cut them off mid sentence? He did it with Gammons yesterday, not that Gammons is a barrel of info, but still let the Boston shill at least finish his thought, he is in the clubhouse, he is on the field, and as you point out he has a worse record picking games then just about anybody

Mikey has turned into a ratings whore, he’ll try to get arguments going on whatever topic is getting a Nielsen buzz…

his take on sports is nothing more then elevator music at this stage of his “career”

I had to laugh last week when one of his cronies called in and put him in the same breath as Jeter as a NY icon, he sort of blew it off but then went into I don’t have a core 4 just a core 2 me and Dog, maybe core 3 with Mink

this tub of BS is so full of himself it’s gone beyond delusional

He may have put the stamp of death on the Tigers and Nats, let’s see I’ll pick the two chalk teams in the sport

“Robinson” says it all, so does Fox not putting him on TV, the Dodga’s after Kershaw are nothing

Mikey talked his way right out of National exposure, Mad Dog must smoke him when it comes to baseball

still I’m glad he’s on the air, WFAN has proven they can’t find good talk show talent so at least we get the comedy

He also let Girardi off the hook the other day, but then again he’s spent zero time breaking down baseball so he went with the generic puff questions

    October 1, 2014 at 10:29 am

  14. Noogsie re Francesa’s take on Stanton how nobody will get him, the Marlins are ready, they have a $60m payroll, they’re gonna want to pay Stanton A Chris Davis type arbitration raise, so let’s say $13m..Stanton on the open market is worth Cano money plus, after the season he just had..only question is how will he bounce back from the beaning

If he ever makes it to free agency after 2016 the yanks will break the bank for that guy, even if Stanton gets traded, if he refuses to take an extention and opts for free agency he could cash in big time, and the yanks can pay him more then say Boston will want to pay him

The dodgers make sense, he’s from California, but they have a crowded out field and the Pederson kid, and Puig

Kemp, Crawford, and Ethier will be tough contracts to move, so by 2016 the Yanks need will be greater then the Dodgers, I think we can take them in a battle of the money whips

The yanks won’t have the chips for a trade, but Stanton has to know the Yanks will top the Cano money for a then 26 yr old slugger

    October 1, 2014 at 12:55 pm

  15. Francesa saying mets have more talent on the field then KC , then mentions grandasin and wright

I’ll take Gordon or Cain over Grandasin, and the way Wright plays I’ll take any of their kids for a lot less money then him

    October 1, 2014 at 2:27 pm

  16. I had 2.5 hours in the car goin to a Dutch Paisan of Sal’s & me, his wake in Colts Neck NJ,
After 10 minutes of fattyy fat fat francesa

    He is fuggin hideous,,
1010 Wins got me,, then Blues cds,,
    Not gonna do it,,
Reading it here is painful,, 2nd hand,, ha!

    October 1, 2014 at 3:06 pm

  17. Sal–Stanton is the guy to target He would even be more of a monster in AL East Parks. He’d also be the attendance boost they don’t have, He’d make them money, regardless of what they have to pay him.
Funny, I was only in the car for a little bit today and I also heard Big Fat Head’s comment about Mets versus Royals talent. Unreal. Position by position, I don’t see the Mets winning many.
And Don Butchie–You are right–the guy can give you a migraine in no time flat. He supports swing coaches in Tennis and Golf, but a Baseball hitting coach is useless–in his warped view. His reasoning makes no sense. Baseball players have God given talent, he says—-and does he think that pro athletes in other sports don”t?
Sal is right–his show is a comedy act now–nothing more. Core two my ass, you fat sloth bastard.
