Junior Rings Hollow

with 15 comments

Junior Steinbrenner’s biggest problem might be he’s a tad content. Un like his old-man who  was self-made the kid had it handed to him on a silver platter, married a ridiculously gorgeous young lady, never had to wonder where his next meal  was coming from, went to the finest schools, learned to be a gentleman, skipped out on the fire and brimstone lessons you learn by getting dirt in your fingernails  on the street, hence the mellow down  easy take on his team underachieving in 2014..

“I don’t think you can teach us old dogs new tricks – we expect to win every year. Our fans do, too. I am disappointed by all of this. We will be back next year with a championship-caliber team.”
As a reminder:

Hal Steinbrenner in February 2013:

All I can assure the fans is we are always going to field a championship-caliber team. Every single year.

Hal Steinbrenner in January 2014:

We did what we needed to do to field this team to be a championship-caliber team.

No doubt Junior is doing his part, he dumps the revenue from the Shopping Mall on Rivera Avenue back into  the team, a half billion in players ain’t no joke, unfortunately him hiring back one old dog Cashman, and patting the other old dog Girardi on the head while giving him a doggie treat isn’t gonna provide much of an up-grade or satisfaction for us the fans who get a bone with no  chicken on it

Girardi has become an irritation when he gets behind a microphone, which makes me wonder, is he in tremendous physical shape from  working out in a gym, or does towing the company line 24-7 /365  build all those muscles, especially the over sized tissues between his ears ?

There really isn’t much the Yanks can  do at this point, they  can’t trade for young  stud players, they  can’t trade off the albatross contracts without eating substantial amounts of money on said contracts, they  refused to  flip “Robinson”  Kuroda and Gardner at  the deadline for prospects, the only 3 players any contender would even  consider taking off their hands.

Teams looking to  get to  the dance are a lot more desperate in late July then in November, December, and January, hell look what Billy Beane did, flipped his best  SS prospect and best  slugger for pitching and Lester couldn’t hold a 7-3 lead going into  the 8th inning, Hammels was a bust, and the Shark not much better

Now Mad Bumgarner last night for the Giants is what Lester was supposed to do- no runs, 4 hits, in a hostile environment.  That  said, I don’t think Beane even gets to  that play-in game without Lester down the stretch, but Big Jon left a bunch of money on the table not stepping up  to  elite status in that must  win.

He’ll  still  get paid, hopefully more then Boston  wants to  give him, “let’s be honest” he owns the Yanks, so getting him out of the division is as much a plus as say Cano leaving the AL East.

Unfortunately when  you compare the Doughboy’s slash .271 .328 .419 .747 / wRC+ 107 / 3.6 WAR   with Brett the Face, .265 .346 .390 .737 / wRC+ 110 / 3.2 WAR they’re the same player, of course when  you watch  them play the Doughboy is a much better performer, but is he a $101M better?

By now the intel is in the bank, Cano  and Martin would have been a much better duo  then  the Doughboy and McCan’t super hero combo. They  could have planted lipstick traces on Cadillac’s ass, softened him up, and I bet he stays in NY on an 8  for $200M or $25M per AAV, throw in  what  Martin  got paid and your looking at less money ($217M then Ellsbury / McCan’t $238M if my hypothetical situation came to  fruition

They  also franchised, if you will, Gardner 4 for $52M that  kicks in this 2015 season, while Melky is now a free agent coming off a .301 .351 .458 .808 / wRC+ 125 / 2.6 WAR /  season

Gardner should be shopped in the off season, his value is at  an all time high, and despite the pundits thinking you can’t get much back for him, I beg to differ if you package him with a lower minor league prospect, at least  try it,  they  can free up his $52M, get back a potentially decent pitcher or position player maybe still  a year  away, and go  after Melky or Yasmani Tomas, one a better offensive player (Melky) the other a bonafide slugger (Tomas) at 24 yr’s old

Captain Mogul

Leave it to Jeter to transcend the typical  retired Jock syndrome, no gig in the ESPN booth, no managerial pangs, forget any Spring Training instructional cameo’s, he’s already up  and running with Jeter Publishing, and now we read he has a new on-line website designed to take the drama out of sportswriters and their hyperbolic editors who all work  for Big Corporate owned Publications, so  the material is not only sensationalized but skewed to  fit said Corporation’s agenda

I’m not sure how this web site will be presented, you might need a subscription, which will  defeat  the purpose, I mean how many fans want to pay  for information? I can  see media guys like Blind Boy Axisa throwing down for the ESPN insider subs required articles, but the everyday Joe’s like you and me don’t want to pay  for some geek like Stark, Olney, Law etc’s editorial  take.

The way Jeter presented his retirement blurb, hand written by him and using  his face book  account so  his words couldn’t be edited by some writer, editor, or publication  with an  agenda, should have been a precursor to this player run  intel  site headed by the Yankee Captain

The Players Tribune is being billed as a digital company that will offer unique access to top athletes in every sport — from videos to photos to podcasts and more — without having to deal with reporters to do it.

Again, figure out how to keep it free to the fans, sell ads to make the dough and the Capt might have the next  big thing. Of course we’ll  always want to  read what  some of the scribes are up  to but it will put handcuffs on old mustache Pete’s like Nicky Two Fingers Cafardo, and Billy Top Shelf Madden

Paid Attendance ?

Somehow the Bombers, per attendance records, had the most paying customers in the AL. Judging by how many empty seats we saw at  the Mall, this is hard to  believe, but the Jeter farewell  tour and the Tanaka Buzz may have created pre-sold ticket interest in the beginning, and most definitely in the end as Cappy played his last games, but it sure looked like a lot of folks were bored  to  death and stayed away most of the season as Junior’s “Championship Caliber” team on the field was horrendous

With the Yanks hyping ARod’s return, and the  spin that  every dog with fleas notably Teixeira, Beltran, McCan’t,  and Sabathia will be better in 2015, buyer beware. Girardi had the gall  to  tell Francesa the team  was getting younger, Pope Francy never took him to  task, never asked what type of math he was using to  come to  that  conclusion especially with positions already being locked up  at  1st base, 3rd base, 2nd base,  right field, center field, left field, DH,  and catcher, and not one guy under 30 yr’s old

Throw in Sabathia who is a lock  for a starter spot or he’ll be on the DL, Tanaka’s health in question thats $47M in questionable dead salary, Arod $27.5M AAV, Tex $22.5M, Sabathia $23M, Beltran $15M, McCan’t $17M, the Doughboy $21M,  Prado $11M, and Gardner’s money kicking in, so where is the youth  movement coming from with those guys guaranteed a spot on the roster?

  1. I like the Tigers but Mikey touting them and the Nats makes me an immediate O’s Giants fan

I’d like to see the Dodgers and Giants NLCS, and the Angels win in the AL, although KC upending Anaheim is pretty juicy, I feel bad for both Anaheim and Detroit getting the nod from Pope Francy who has a worse track record picking winners then Mickey Rooney had picking 8 different wives

  2. Me, I’d like to see Buck & Donnie Baseball in the big dance. Both deserve to go, never been, and have paid their Baseball dues. Buck’s a lifer and Donnie, well, he’s Donnie Baseball for crissakes! It’s a shame he never made it there as a player. Oh, and yes, Hal did marry an absolutely gorgeous woman! I’ve taped all the major events she’s attended at the Stadium, which this year were many. The camera never lingers on her for long enough, but I’ve hit the rewind button many times to get a better look. Hal has done a better job in picking the Mrs, than stocking this team. Cristina Steinbrenner is absolutely smokin’. TV Alert Tonight!!! The Captain will appear on Jimmy Fallon tonight! Let’s hope he brings Hannah Davis along for eye candy!

  3. hahahaha, you dog you lol

Buck is getting on my nerves Bondsie, but yes he used to be one of us before he lost his way, and he has had a shit load of injuries to deal with, I’ll take Buck by default

the KC story is nice but I’m no KC fan not since the 50’s when they were the Yanks farm system lol

I just want Mikey Francesa’s picks to disappear quickly so No Detroit no Washington… The don hates Buck that would piss him off, do you really want to piss off the Don? lol….

  4. I recently saw the PBS Show where they trace a person’s family down through many generations. I only watched it because they were doing Jeter. Very interesting–going back to his father’s side–and this is before the Civil War and in the State of Alabama—Jeter’s father’s side of the family originates from a white slave owner named Jeter who had sexual relations with his young female slave, resulting in a son named Green Jeter. Derek’s great great grandfather. He was shocked. They presented Derek with an elaborate family tree. His mother’s side of the family comes from Great Britain.

  5. Hey Noogsie, that’s great stuff, I had no idea that show even existed… Green Jeter, so Jeter’s family tree is really deep rooted in America, pre Civil War.. Jeter is definitely a phenomenon, probably would have been no matter where he played

I believe my Grandfather was born in the old country, so I’m a mutt, and my roots aren’t as deeply rooted as Jeter’s

I just heard Mikey say “Robinson” again, his cronies are either asleep at the wheel, or they love hearing him make an ass of himself lol… I really hope one of his man crush callers don’t correct him…

  6. Yea the Jeter thing was good. I only heard about it because I watch the Antiques Roadshow and it was advertised on there. They also took Derek’s blood and did some DNA testing with it, comparing it to the white descendants of white slaveowner Jeter’s current family. It was a match.
I read that Mikey 21 was pre-empted 4 out of the 5 days this week on Fox. He was bragging a few years back how he now negotiates his own contracts so that he doesn’t get ripped off.
Is there a bigger Knucklehead Smith?

    October 2, 2014 at 5:55 pm

  7. Lol..nice negotiating Mikey…Mikey lost his national ranking when Yes dumped him..Noogsie did I hear Mikey say he’s gonna be part of fantasy football, the handicapping of players portion of it? Does whoever hired him to do that gig know he’s seldom right?

Man I’d like to see the yanks get andrew miller 3 for $27m, never happen but Miller Robinson and Betances would be nasty

    Interesting article by Sherman

More interesting stuff on the Jeter tree thanks…

  8. Friggin Cubans can really play, Cashman is such an asshole not going after any of them

    October 2, 2014 at 8:42 pm

  9. Dombrowski continues to shoot himself in the head by not addressing the bull pen, gas can is his best option, that’s rough

He brought in a bunch of aces but there is still the last 6 outs to get

Why GM’s waste roster spots with mops and retreads in the pen is beyond me

6 killers and a long man, two guys that can close, two guys that can set up, two kids with live arms that make the 6th and 7th inning no fun

Too bad Mikey didn’t figure in how bad the Tiger pen was..good thing for the tigers, none of these runs count tomorrow

  10. Noogsie
My wife was touting that DNA Jeter show big time.
She said she was moved almost as much as Cap was,,
Gotta find it on demand somewhere,,
Fuck – Baltimore was down, i go eat and punk buck is happy,, grrrr

    October 2, 2014 at 9:45 pm

  11. Sal–I think you could probably find the Jeter show on line someplace. Maybe the PBS website–I think you can watch it there–or just a general google search would likely have it show up. It was just on for the first time Tuesday Night–also heard he is on with Jimmy Fallon tonight. Captain making the pr rounds.

  12. Losing my mind here. Addressing something to Sal that someone else messages me about. Drain Bramage, I think.
