Yanks Opt For DiDi Not Offense
Mariekson Julius Gregorius’s first swing as a Arizona Diamondback in 2013 was a momentous occasion, he drove a Phil Hughes meatball into the Yankee Stadium right field seats, and boom just like that the former 8 game old Cincinnati Red turned D-Back prospect was off and running.
What’s the big deal, it was Phil Hughes pitching in Yankee Stadium, yeah I know, but the D-Backs and Gregorius were excited, and apparently Brian Cashman has had a man crush on the athletic SS from Amsterdam, Netherlands for a while now.
Since when? Well ever since the Red Sox brought up Xander Bogaerts, Rangers showcased Jurickson Profar, the O’s Jonathan Schoop kills the Yanks, Andrelton Simmons is fast becoming a star SS in Atlanta, they’re all a young crop of players from the Netherlands and vicinities close by.
Unfortunately none of those guys were available, so the Bomber GM flipped a 15th round diamond in the rough, RHP Shane Greene to the Tigers, who in turn sent pitching prospect Robbie Ray and a budding 18 year old switch hitting SS Domingo Leyba to the D-Backs for the Yanks new platoon SS Didi Gregorius
Greene was the Yanks 2nd biggest surprise last season behind the emergence of Dellin Betances. The gangly right hander who plays defense about as well as the NY Giants did last week, showed off a power slider and sinker that wowed most of us who had never even heard of Shane Greene. OK so he had a few starts that were off the charts good that may have skewed his final line, but finally the Yanks had themselves a young cost controlled starter under the age of 27 that didn’t cost $175M to acquire with some upside promise
I listen to a ton of games on the radio before watching the archives, and John Sterling would fawn all over himself RE: Greene’s stuff, “The Yanks have developed a terrific pitcher” that came out of Sterling and Waldman’s mouth more then just a few times
Fast forward to yesterday where Mike Francesa and Michael Kay, especially Francesa yawned their way past this deal. Francesa who obviously was rudely interrupted on “Football Friday” with this baseball nonsense said the Yanks got their new SS for next to nothing. Nice Mike, I guess when your reading the box scores and not really watching the kid pitch that’s the correct summation
Kay was at least complimentary of Greene’s potential upside, but he did make sure the unwashed masses that watch his YES TV show were informed the Yanks had flipped at best a back of the rotation pitcher who probably wasn’t even gonna make the starting 5 in 2015.
Really, and who does Kay think that starting quintet was gonna be? Soup Bone Tanaka? Bum Knee Sabathia, Duct Tape Pineda? Thousand Dollar Car Phelps? Wet behind the Ears Mitchell? If we lit enough candles and dropped a sizable amount of dough in the donation box maybe the Reverend Whitley?
The SS market is as thin as the offensive market in baseball so I get the deal, the Tigers actually coughed up two top prospects for Greene, the D-Backs have depth at SS so they were dealing from strength, I’m not sure what the Yanks were doing, but the alternatives were Stephen Drew who Scott Boras is still trying to sell as an elite player, and a list of SS on other teams that would cost substantial money and prospects to acquire, so hence the Gregorius deal for Shane Greene was the cheapest and potentially had the most long term upside
To go along with a flashy glove and some descent range, Gregorius looks to be another potential rabbit on the base paths, that’s when and if he can actually get on base. He shot out of the gate for the D-Backs in 2013 and hit .407 his 1st month, by the end of May he was down to .318, by the end of September his line looked closer to what Cashman might hope is his average .252 /.332 /.373 / .704
That’s a God send compared to what Cashman got from SS in the last 2 seasons, so yes it’s an upgrade. He missed the first two months of the 2014 season and in 80 games last year he put up a pedestrian .226 / .290 / .363 / .653 with 6 HR’s
Here’s the small print at the bottom of the contract, against LHP he’s a gutter ball .137 / .228 / .196 / .424, so he’ll be platooned with Private Ryan until hopefully whoever the new Bomber batting coach is can fix this platoon split mess. He only stole 3 bases, in 3 attempts so we have another Brett the Face on our hands Re: that aspect of his game
One decent split we saw was 2 outs with RISP .261 / .433 / .348 /.781
Here’s a quick snap shot of the Gregorius and the deal, yet another player the D-Backs gave up on (see McCarthy) and the hope for us is Didi donning the Pinstripes brings out the best in him, if not you coughed up a potential decent RHP with 6 yr’s of team control for a platoon split SS that the Yanks have cheap-ish for 5 more yr’s.
The Bad news is Brendon Ryan is now your everyday SS vs LHP, lucky for the Yanks that beast doesn’t exist too often in the AL East, off the top of my head Buehrle, Chen, and Moore, are the starters. Boston if they get Lester back, so Ryan might not see much action until late in a game when an opposing manager brings in a LHP to shut down Gregorius and the automatic out turns from Didi to Private Ryan
The loss of Greene despite the yawns throughout Yankee-ville are now NY needs 2 more starters, possibly 3 if Turkey Bone Tanaka can’t go at all. Judging by what teams want for top of the rotation starters in a trade, that type of deal ain’t happening for Cashman. And, even in the Free Agent market after Lester decides his fate next week, the price for Scherzer, Shields, even the lower tier McCarthy, Liriano, and Hammel will be expensive
We better hope “What Budget” are the buzz words in the Bronx

I saw where the Mariners are big on Melky again, that makes a lot of sense, it will keep Iwakuma or any of their kids like Paxton or Walker out of Boston in a potential Cespedes trade. It also keeps Melky out of toronto, man adding him would really kill the Yanks
Glad they got Miller, now the choices are if Headley doesn’t get swept up for Cruz money maybe his market crashes.. And If Robertson really wants to go to Houston he might close a meaningful game in 3 years
Take a few bucks less Robbie come back to NY and try to relief pitch the Yanks into a Wild Card, or at least it’ll make the last 9 outs of 2-1 games a lot of fun to watch

I am all in on Miller. Gregorius for Greene? Not so much. I watched a few clips of didi with a bat in his hand. He makes Gardzilla look like Lou Gehrig. We’ve gone from a wet newspaper to a roll of Christmas wrapping Paper. With the inside cardboard roll removed.
Baltimore lost two big fish, so I’m thinking they may be in play for Melky. Or Melky could be this year’s Stephen Drew–turn down the 15 Million QO and then not get any decent offer.
I listened to Kay a little yesterday. He was agast about some of the contract offers—Headley for one, and then what Martin signed for. His amnesia kicked in as he has forgotten all about Ellsbury, Beltran and McCann. He toes the company line on stuff like that.

Hey Noogsie lol ..funny stuff.. Yeah Kay has revisionist history issues, but they’re somewhat skewed in favor of his extremely biased YES bosses, and his dream job broadcasting the Yanks
Francesa I give a pass, he’s in football mode, he wouldn’t know Didi Gregorius from Dee Dee Sharp.. In fact I don’t know if he had Cashman on yesterday, I would think the GM stopped by the NYY Radio station as his last stop, it’d be bad business if he didn’t
The miller thing could backfire but it’s a good gamble.. Looking at a line-up posted on MLB last night not sure losing Greene was a good move, this reeks of not wanting to spend on Desmond in next yr’s FA class

he’s a Boras client and will require an substantial overpay, but he can rake the few times I’ve seen him plus his numbers look pretty good

Good stuff Noogsy! I agree on the Miller deal. I’ve been screaming for 2 months to get him & resign Robertson thus creating the 3-headed monster ala KC. That would be the way to go, especially since our starters (who the hell are they?) rarely go beyond the 6th! Maybe Cash is finally seeing the light on this one. Don’t screw this up! Bring Robby back! The Didi trade I hate!! I really thought Greene had a huge upside after seeing his ’14 season. It appeared to have clicked in for him in the minors shortly before they brought him up. I loved his stuff & poise, I thought this is only going to get better. So, what the fuck does Mushman do? He trades a young, controllable pitcher with maybe a huge upside, for a young SS with tools who can’t hit lefties & will be part of a platoon. WTF was he thinking? Why go all out to replace Jeter if there’s nothing special available? If we could generate some offense from other positions, I would’ve been fine with Private Ryan for a year & see what develops. I’m really upset by this trade. How often do the Yanks develop a young pitcher who could possibly settle into the rotation? Hughes was the last, and not much before him. To give up that for half of a platoon SS is ridiculous!

Sal must be xmas for you, they signed Miller!! I think its a good move but I saw a list of the expensive free agent relievers they signed-Karsay,Quantrill,Hawkins,etc-that somehow did not pan out.You have to keep your fingers crossed with relievers. Sorry to say I like getting Gregorius, they were not getting Tulo and who really wants to see more of Drew? Shane Green is Adam Warren is David Phelps is just a mediocre
run of the mill pitcher, nothing special. He certainly was not Cy Young Winner Bullet Bob Turley. The more exposed he got last year, the worse he did.Didi hit well in the minors, was yo-yo’d back and forth to the majors,he should do better knowing he has a job and I am sure he will improve with the help of the Yanks
batting coach…….oh wait, they don’t have one!!!-lol According to Cashman-who was on with Big Mike, its on the wfan website-he will platoon at first with Ryan, which will certainly induce nausea and vomiting.
To me give him the job and let him play, wasting at bats on Ryan, who is garbage, this years Stenchiro,is pointless. The biggest problem they have is their offense,I do not believe Prado is a full time player. I am glad to see the Yanks came out of their coma, hopefully they will continue to improve-signing Robertson is job 1-at the winter meetings.

hey Big D.. Glad you like Gregorius, that gives us some hope, I’m pulling for the kid to figure it out, I think all of us are.. Reynolds on MLB said he’s gonna grow into a hitter, let’s hope he does.. tough losing a kid pitcher, I wish him well, and yes there is a good chance we saw his best.. water under the bridge, time to move on
I keep thinking they have more moves, maybe they surprise us with a front line starter.. My problem is I can see everybody’s point of view.. that’s why I love this crew we have here.. One thing for sure we want the laundry too succeed, solid takes boys

One of my favorite things to read are the parting shots the local team’s media bestows on departing players, all team’s media do it
Here’s the D-Backs version on Gregorius
I had to laugh at this blurb though
“But how long will a team like the Yankees keep trotting out a light-swinging infielder who has a career .243 batting average and only hits .184 against left-handers?
That’s not going to sell in the Bronx’.
Obviously this dude hasn’t watched the Yanks for the past 2 seasons, SS has been a Blacker then Black Hole.. We just didn’t want to cough up a potential #3 or #3A guy for him.. My second thought is Looks like Warren or Phelps take his place.. Taking Warren out of the pen thins that department out, unless they get Robertson or his equivalent
the thought of Ryan platooning is maddening too me, I could see him as Jeter backup late in games but now he’s a starter vs LHP
Let’s hope that BABIP average and all those hard hit balls Didi was supposedly hitting find a safe landing outside of somebody’s glove
Still a very well cherry picked character assassination of Didi by this Desert Dog
Hey at least Girardi doesn’t have to come up with a nickname, the kid came with one built in
