Man-Ban-ished to Atlanta

with 21 comments

At least we know Cashman and crew weren’t out dancing with Taylor Swift and Jenny McCarthy on New Years Eve, or maybe they  were after hearing they  banished the 2nd  former #1 Prospect in the organization

( Montero  was the 1st) one of our hopeful 2015  break through 23 yr olds, the infamous Manny Banuelos

Man-Ban was jettisoned to Atlanta for a journeyman reliever with  decent NL stats, righty reliever David Carpenter and lefty reliever Chasen Shreve . I do  remember Carpenter going from Toronto  to Boston in the John Farrell trade for Mikey Aviles

Kevin Kernan confirms that very clouded and cracked memory

Per reports the Yanks used Bubba McCan’t’s recommendation on Carpenter, who  caught the dude 2 yr’s ago. Sensie Sherman labeled McCan’t a secret weapon, but what  we’re wondering, a secret weapon for who, Us or Them?

Two years ago the right-hander posted a 4-1 record with a 1.78 ERA with 74 strikeouts over 65²/₃ innings. Brian McCann was his catcher then and that figures into the equation.

OK that’s fine but any reason why Carpenter doubled his ERA last season? Maybe he missed McCann, or maybe he’s just  not that  good, or maybe John Hart is looking to  flip  a dime a dozen 4A 29 yr old fly ball pitcher who is arbitration  eligible  for a 23 yr old potential  future starter.

Carpenter, 29, had a 3.54 ERA (2.94 FIP) with excellent strikeout (9.89 K/9 and 25.9 K%) and walk (2.36 BB/9 and 6.2 BB%) rates in 61 innings this past season. His ground ball rate (37.6%) isn’t anything special and hasn’t been his entire career. Carpenter was better in 2013 (1.78 ERA) despite nearly identical peripherals (2.83 FIP). He’s a classic mid-90s fastball/mid-80s slider guy.

You can’t pin the tail on a donkey over 1 pitch, (see Carlos Beltran and Waino)  but a few interesting notes from Joel Sherman’s twitter account

Joel Sherman @Joelsherman1 · 13h13 hours ago

Of course, Carpenter gave up 2-R HR to Uribe in the ’13 DS that eliminated #Braves as Kimbrel warmed.

That’s always reassuring, again the dude is a fly ball pitcher

Carpenter hits 99mph, pitches at 95-96, strong cutter/slider. Was 8th-innning rlvr for ’13 #Braves 96W, McCann main catcher.

That  was 2 yr’s ago, which is an  eternity for non weapon so /so  relievers ( see Kyle Farnsworth / Shawn Kelley)

Shreve had break out yr in ’14, reached MLB, not considered pure LH v. LH guy. Big strike thrower who can work a whole inning

That’s nice, when  you trade a former #1 prospect it’s good one of the kids you get back  can  actually pitch a whole inning. Of course we kid because we can, basically it’s good news that he isn’t just  a loogy. In fact he has trouble getting LHB’s out

You just  hate having a relief pitcher who’s name is “Chasen” leaves a bad taste, we went from Man-Ban  to “We Be Chasen”

On a serious note the Bombers went from  having 1 LHP in the pen to now an Overstocked.Com  LHP arsenal

Potentially Yankees have deepest stockpile of LH rlvrs long time: Miller/Wilson/Shreve plus high minors: Lindgren/Pazos/Webb

Anytime I hear Cashman  dealt with Atlanta for pitching my skin crawls, remember Javy Vazquez,  remember Melky going to Atlanta?

#Yankees have had miserable success acquiring P from #Braves: Farnsworth, Neagle, Karsay, Hammond. Boone Logan was pretty good.

It’s obvious Cashman’s intel gave up on Banuelos,

#Yankees thought Banuelos had regressed. Know risk here. He has 1 more option, so another yr at minors to see if can straighten out #Braves

#Braves continue to try to add SP with high ceilings. But sign of how much NYY think Banuelos has fallen to move for 2 relievers

I know this is a shock, that’s how vulnerable we can be when a Franchise over hypes prospects. I always try to  warn my few Red Sox buds, because as Bomber fans we’ve already  been through the Killer B’s and Montero debacles.

Boston  seems to have taken that  way over hyped approach to  their recent crop of Prospects,  Middlebrooks, De La Rosa, Webster,  Checchini, Bradley, Bogaerts, Betts, Swihart, Vazquez, Owens, Rodriguez, Johnson, Barnes, Renaudo, Marrero

We already  watched Middlebrooks, Bradley and Bogaerts bomb, Checchini was so  good they spent $95M on Frisco Fats, and  all  the hype surrounding the 2 over touted power arms they  got from  the Dodgers in the Salary Dump  trade, De La Rosa, and Webster were flipped for Wade Miley a kid who  pitched to  a plus 4 ERA and a 1.4 WHIP in Arizona

Of course  kids take time to figure it out and Manny after building up his arm strength post Tommy John surgery could find his nitch in the NL, but after a great  start  to his career, he’s been God awful pre the TJ and after it. Anyway good luck  to Man-Ban, wish  we could have gotten to know you

Banuelos, 23, went 2-3 with a 4.11 ERA (76.2IP, 64H, 35ER, 31BB, 71K, 10HR) in 26 combined games (25 starts) at three minor league levels in 2014 (Single-A Tampa, Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre). Originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on March 30, 2008, he went 21-22 with a 3.29 ERA (446.0IP, 397H, 163ER, 178BB, 446K, 31HR) in 112 games (95 starts) over six minor league seasons.

The Yankees’ 40-man roster now stands at 40.

  1. I had delusions of grandeur that Manny would come up and be a back of the rotation type starter once some of the brittle rotation pieces went on the DL. Somewhere between a good Nova and better then Nuno

I guess Cashman sold early just in case the kid wasn’t any good this season at Triple A

so now we have Betances, Miller, Warren, Wilson, Rogers, Carpenter, TBD in the pen

Cashman and pitching really scare me.. Good Luck to Manny

Yanks continue to flush out their farm system, well that’s good news and bad news.. It’s not like any of them sans Betances and Warren were show stoppers, that’s the good news, the bad news is more of them have failed then flourished, makes you hope they spend more time looking for better scout and development people then a hitting coach

what is a hitting coach gonna teach old Dogs? like Arod, Tex, McCan’t, Beltran, Headley, the Doughboy and Gardzilla?

  2. Very sorry to see Manny go. Saw the stats, but was still hoping the talented lefty would eventually figure it out. Lefties are notorious for blossoming late. Ron Guidry didn’t have success until he reached 26. The little I saw of him, pre-TJ, I was impressed & hopeful. It’s funny, the one area where we seemed the strongest, the bullpen, has now undergone the biggest change in personal. I’m gonna need a scorecard to figure out who’s who! I think Cashman pulled the trigger too early on this kid. Many pitchers who’ve had the TJ surgery, don’t come back strong until the 2nd year removed from surgery. Maybe this will be in Manny’s case. Either way, I’m sad to see him go. Maybe this comes back to bite Cashman in the ass. Nothing would please me more.

  3. Lou Piniella used to say never take pitchers the Braves get rid of.I was surprised they dumped Banuelos,
it takes 2 years to fully recover from tj surgery, lefty starters are hard to find.Over hyping prospects is standard fare, the Killer B’s are going the way of Generation K across town.Saw that Montero has lost 30 pounds, time to bring him back!! 94 days until spring training!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. hey fellas.. great points thanks..

Good old Louie, never heard that one Big D, good advice .. Monty losing 30 pounds can mean one of two things, he’s off the juice or he’s ready to buckle down, they can use a 1st baseman, hopefully they trade him back in a few yr’s once the DH spot opens up

Good point on Guidry bondsie I wasn’t aware of that either… and it is funny how the pen was a strength but that’s where they made all of their moves.. I don’t have an issue with all the LHP’s, Miller off sets Orti, and I can’t wait to see Lindgren and Wilson

I listened to Jody Mac this morning he mentioned seeing both Carp and Shreve pitch, liked them both

Seems they don’t want young kids that can’t live middle of the plate and they obviously don’t trust he can paint with consistency either that or they just needed to fill in the pen without spending $5M and up

As for Boston and their hyped kids, amazing how 90% of the Nation has bought the goods hook line and sinker.. Hell I remember buying the B’s and Montero….

Maybe all of the albatross contracts are forcing their hand, although we finally got Greene and they flipped him as soon as his value went up, let’s hope Sir Diddy makes that move a wash

  6. Craziest random stat of the year… Garrett Jones had a hit off the fastest pitch last year 102.1 MPH and the slowest 59.2 MPH.

    http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-best-pitches-of-2014-by-whiffs/

good video check out Tanaka’s split the last gif in the article

man if that kid and pineda ever get healthy… just need two more.. I wonder if they stretch out Warren? try to get that 7th inning out of a kid

RHP Danny Burawa: The Yankees protected Burawa from the Rule 5 Draft, so they think highly of him. Struck out 55 hitters in 59.1 innings between Double-A and Triple-A. Must work on command.

They could use a guy like Burke Badenhop: A free agent, Badenhop provided the Red Sox with everything they needed from him last season. The team’s primary option when a ground ball was needed, Badenhop also pitched in long relief several times during the season to save the bullpen. While he’ll likely look to cash in as a free agent, a reunion with Boston isn’t out of the question.

guy throws a lot of ground balls, he could maybe replace Warren if Warren moves to the rotation….

Speier is a good writer, sometimes his Red Sox tighty whiteys are on too tight, but he knows his shit.

funny how per Speier Lester at 30 is trending past that golden 25 to 30 age Boston is holding out for, but Ramirez at 31 is fine because offensive players don’t fade as quickly as pitchers

no mention that Frisco Fats could possibly be close to 350 pounds by July either

  10. I can thank my mother for throwing out all my old baseball cards & THEN telling me! Ugh! Wouldn’t be surprised if in 2 years Manny becomes a serious starting pitcher. Then, how are we going to look at giving up on a 23 yr old lefty? Who could’ve been pitching in Yankee stadium, where we’ve ALWAYS won with significant lefties???? Ford, Gomez, Key, Pettitte, Capt Crunch, and on & on the list goes. If that happens, then I’m going to send Jimmy & Carmine after all the geniuses and straighten them all out once & for all. And I’ll be in Temple when it goes down. The Family has a lot of buffers!

  12. Finding bats is like finding somebody you can trust in the music business, far and few between

Too many big and bad contracts on the yanks, gotta wait Donny,…Boston has the offense, it’s their pitching and bull pen that need work..they had the cap space to drop $190m on two players

We have to wait on a few contracts to expire

    Sal

    January 3, 2015 at 9:17 am

  13. Instead of waiting on some of these onerous contracts to expire, I say let’s help them along. “Let’s get ’em now while we still gave the muscle”. The Family has a lot of buffers. How about we “arrange” for some of these guys to “disappear”. We could have CC visit a Capt Crunch factory, and on a tour of the facility he “unexpectedly” falls into a cereal silo, never to be heard from again! Tex, who’s always taking too much BP, hurts his wrist, again, and has to get a cortisone shot. We find out what DR’s office he’s going to, and plant a gun in the Dr’s bathroom. So, before the Doc gives him the shot, he excuses himself to go to the bathroom. When he emerges, he comes out guns blazing, 2 shots to the head. Looks at the nurse, who’s scarred shitless, drops the gun, and heads out to a waiting car taking him to the airport for a flight to Sicily. Where he’ll remain in hiding for a year under the protection of Don Tommasino. A-Roid, is too vulnerable in so many ways. People would jump at the chance to “do” him. I don’t see that as a problem. So, there ya go! 3 crushing contracts gone! Then we can go back to the business of being the New York Yankees!!!

  14. hard to argue with that type of game plan Bondsie.. A few yr’s ago we established a petty cash fund, book your first class airplane ticket to Tampa and send me the receipt

Make Hal an offer he won’t understand.. you can hide here once it’s over, nobody comes here except for a few of us so it’s better then a witness protection location….

  15. Sounds good Sal. I’ll make all the arrangements. Just as well. Turns out Don Tommasino is “unavailable”. So we were in negotiations with Don Butchini, you’re familiar with him?, but his asking price so far is, uh, unacceptable. Expect someone to reach out to you!
