Man-Ban-ished to Atlanta

At least we know Cashman and crew weren’t out dancing with Taylor Swift and Jenny McCarthy on New Years Eve, or maybe they  were after hearing they  banished the 2nd  former #1 Prospect in the organization

( Montero  was the 1st) one of our hopeful 2015  break through 23 yr olds, the infamous Manny Banuelos

Man-Ban was jettisoned to Atlanta for a journeyman reliever with  decent NL stats, righty reliever David Carpenter and lefty reliever Chasen Shreve . I do  remember Carpenter going from Toronto  to Boston in the John Farrell trade for Mikey Aviles

Per reports the Yanks used Bubba McCan’t’s recommendation on Carpenter, who  caught the dude 2 yr’s ago. Sensie Sherman labeled McCan’t a secret weapon, but what  we’re wondering, a secret weapon for who, Us or Them?

Two years ago the right-hander posted a 4-1 record with a 1.78 ERA with 74 strikeouts over 65²/₃ innings. Brian McCann was his catcher then and that figures into the equation.

OK that’s fine but any reason why Carpenter doubled his ERA last season? Maybe he missed McCann, or maybe he’s just  not that  good, or maybe John Hart is looking to  flip  a dime a dozen 4A 29 yr old fly ball pitcher who is arbitration  eligible  for a 23 yr old potential  future starter.

Carpenter, 29, had a 3.54 ERA (2.94 FIP) with excellent strikeout (9.89 K/9 and 25.9 K%) and walk (2.36 BB/9 and 6.2 BB%) rates in 61 innings this past season. His ground ball rate (37.6%) isn’t anything special and hasn’t been his entire career. Carpenter was better in 2013 (1.78 ERA) despite nearly identical peripherals (2.83 FIP). He’s a classic mid-90s fastball/mid-80s slider guy.

Of course, Carpenter gave up 2-R HR to Uribe in the ’13 DS that eliminated #Braves as Kimbrel warmed.

That’s always reassuring, again the dude is a fly ball pitcher

Carpenter hits 99mph, pitches at 95-96, strong cutter/slider. Was 8th-innning rlvr for ’13 #Braves 96W, McCann main catcher.

That  was 2 yr’s ago, which is an  eternity for non weapon so /so  relievers ( see Kyle Farnsworth / Shawn Kelley)

Shreve had break out yr in ’14, reached MLB, not considered pure LH v. LH guy. Big strike thrower who can work a whole inning

That’s nice, when  you trade a former #1 prospect it’s good one of the kids you get back  can  actually pitch a whole inning. Of course we kid because we can, basically it’s good news that he isn’t just  a loogy. In fact he has trouble getting LHB’s out

You just  hate having a relief pitcher who’s name is “Chasen” leaves a bad taste, we went from Man-Ban  to “We Be Chasen”

On a serious note the Bombers went from  having 1 LHP in the pen to now an Overstocked.Com  LHP arsenal

Potentially Yankees have deepest stockpile of LH rlvrs long time: Miller/Wilson/Shreve plus high minors: Lindgren/Pazos/Webb

Anytime I hear Cashman  dealt with Atlanta for pitching my skin crawls, remember Javy Vazquez,  remember Melky going to Atlanta?

I know this is a shock, that’s how vulnerable we can be when a Franchise over hypes prospects. I always try to  warn my few Red Sox buds, because as Bomber fans we’ve already  been through the Killer B’s and Montero debacles.

Boston  seems to have taken that  way over hyped approach to  their recent crop of Prospects,  Middlebrooks, De La Rosa, Webster,  Checchini, Bradley, Bogaerts, Betts, Swihart, Vazquez, Owens, Rodriguez, Johnson, Barnes, Renaudo, Marrero

We already  watched Middlebrooks, Bradley and Bogaerts bomb, Checchini was so  good they spent $95M on Frisco Fats, and  all  the hype surrounding the 2 over touted power arms they  got from  the Dodgers in the Salary Dump  trade, De La Rosa, and Webster were flipped for Wade Miley a kid who  pitched to  a plus 4 ERA and a 1.4 WHIP in Arizona

Of course  kids take time to figure it out and Manny after building up his arm strength post Tommy John surgery could find his nitch in the NL, but after a great  start  to his career, he’s been God awful pre the TJ and after it. Anyway good luck  to Man-Ban, wish  we could have gotten to know you

Banuelos, 23, went 2-3 with a 4.11 ERA (76.2IP, 64H, 35ER, 31BB, 71K, 10HR) in 26 combined games (25 starts) at three minor league levels in 2014 (Single-A Tampa, Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre). Originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on March 30, 2008, he went 21-22 with a 3.29 ERA (446.0IP, 397H, 163ER, 178BB, 446K, 31HR) in 112 games (95 starts) over six minor league seasons.

The Yankees’ 40-man roster now stands at 40.
