Rounding 3RD Heading For The Bench

with 12 comments

Maybe Isis can  hack the NY Yankees Control Center that directly connects Cashman’s office with Hal’s Mansion, then maybe we can understand what  the hell is going on this Winter?

Actually we already know what’s going on, the Yanks are strapped with a brand new  $27M Elephant in the room in 2015, Alex Rodriguez !  That’s a Max Scherzer, Cole Hamels, Jon Lester type pay check that is landing in the bank account of a broken down former 3rd baseman / present DH

Throw in Roc Nation client CC Sabathia who unless his shoulder goes South by 2016, not his  knees or his elbow, the Big Coco Crisp will have 3 more  years in Pinstripes that  total  up  to $73M

Teixeira, who  will be 35 yr’s old on April 11th, is the most innocuous of the Three Albatross Amigos, he’s only owed $45M over the next  2 seasons, and if somehow, some way he stays healthy, and can possibly  approach or appear to  approach his 2012 numbers, and if Cashman  eats $20M of that  $45M, they might find a sucker that needs a first baseman / DH

So in a nut shell, Cashman is stuck with a series of bad and unmovable contracts that has maxed out his payroll. That’s  finding yourself lodged between a rock and a hard place when  you need to  find not only rotation help, but  a 2nd baseman, SS,  and 3rd baseman, they  were the only positions that  were’t blocked by bad contracts.

Enter Chase Headley who per his numbers wasn’t worth more then Shane Victorino, or 3 yr’s $39M, but thanks to Frisco Fats  getting 5 for $95M from the desperate Boston Red Sox, Headley was able to secure the same AAV as Victorino, $13M per, but Cashman needed to give him 4 yr’s $52M.

Cashman  got his cost controlled SS but at the expense of one of his young starters who would have given the Yanks 6 yr’s of team control, we’ll  see if Greene was smoke and mirrors or did he finally figure it out at  the age of 26. He also  landed a stop  gap platoon  split  2nd baseman for a $5M base salary with PA incentives. So  what used to  amount to a $60M AAV 2nd, SS, and 3rd base trio, ARod, Jeter, Cano) is now making less then $20M per yr

The Yanks had a makeover, not only on the field but on the bench. While it appears Robbing Robbie Thompson was elevated in status, in reality they just put him where he can’t do  as much damage as  he did while coaching 3rd base.

After a series of bad base running plays in July

It was the 16th time a Yankee was put out at home plate on a baserunning play (and second time in that game), which easily leads the American League. The 16 outs are also three more than the team had all of last season… and we are only at the All-Star break.

The stats says the Yankees are a slightly below-average base-running team this year — FanGraphs puts them at -1.3 runs on the bases, 18th out of 30 teams –

Thompson messed up  a lot making decisions as their 3rd base coach, that more then the Spin Espada is bilingual, is no  doubt  the reason Thompson has a seat next  to Girardi

Cashman said he moved some of the coaches around because he felt it worked better. Espada, who will also coach defense, was a third-base coach with the Marlins. “I could’ve put him at first, but with his capabilities at third, I felt that putting Joe there would make us better,” Cashman said. “Now we have two guys at the corners who speak Spanish and English.”

Willie Randolph  has known for a while now he wasn’t getting the gig, in fact  he wasn’t even on Cashman’s radar, per Willie, he initiated the interview, Cashman  was just  going through  the motions, Willie is obviously too old school for the new Uber Metric GM

Pentland apparently has ties with  some of the coaches and advisors now working for the Yanks, that  was his in, and Alan Cockrell was a Gary Denbro recommendation.  Bottom line, Pentland is 68 yr’s old, having two  hitting coaches seems to be a new trend, so  the two headed hitting coach monster will  try to  resurrect some former big time MLB Stars

Cashman said Cockrell previously had been hired by new vice president of operations Gary Denbo to work in the Yankees’ minor league system, but Denbo encouraged the GM to talk to him for a major league position.

“We’ve got a diverse staff and are just trying to use all of our assets in the right places,” Cashman said.

Once again Cashman plays the  diversity card, but from  reading the tea leaves, it’s more about NY not wanting to  raise their payroll  to  $250M. They  won’t be  landing any Big Hairy Monster type contracts, so  the Bronx Bombers are now the Bronx Defenders

Let’s hope the pitching  holds up

  1. who doesn’t speak English on the Yanks? What a crock of shit… Tex, Drew, Gregorius, Headley, Gardner, Ellsbury Beltran, McCann, Murphy, Ryan, Young, ARod possibly 1 young Latin kid on the bench?

Willie was too old school for this crew, they already have Tony Pena, and Thompson got put where he can’t do any damage, sitting next to Girardi who does enough damage on his own..

It’s not like Tony Pena had Girardi managing from the gut, so Thompson I’m sure is a good baseball man, just not that good at reading players rounding third and heading for home…

The stench is unacceptable from both traitorous gangs,,,

  3. Actually Donny, Hank Steinbrenner got the ball rolling toward the apocalypse by extending a 33 yr old suspect for 10 yr’s and $275M, at a time when no team was even entertaining paying him $200M

Sabathia’s extension was another mess up, let him hit the market and see if anybody wanted to hand a guy with as many innings as he had on his arm and knees 5 yr’s @ $122M for a 31 yr old work horse

Sabathia is now the poster boy for teams not handing out those types of contracts… Except the Cubs who haven’t won in 100 yr’s were desperate and really over paid Lester.. they also have a ton of salary flexibility from rebuilding through their farm system

and to give NY the benefit of the doubt, Sabathia didn’t start too crash and burn until after that extension

Cashman’s inability to produce any young pitching has cost the Yanks a ton of money with Sabathia now up to $181M and Tanaka $153M

when you look back at the Giants they had a $15M starting rotation the yr they won a ring in 2010

Cain, Bumgarner, Sanchez and Lincecum were working for peanuts.. Unfortunately the more you win the more it cost, lucky for them the now bad Cain, Lincecum, and Zito deals didn’t hurt them, but only because Bumgarner was developed in their system and is cost controlled

You really have to produce your own stars in this era, or hope you can over pay for a max of 5 yr’s, the new CBA took a baseball bat to the Yanks knees, with TV revenue sharing and all teams starting the season with $50M to dol out to their younger players so they don’t hit free agency at ages 25 to 27

Ellsbury and McCann will be the next Albatross contracts, but at least Arod, Sabathia, Tex, and Beltran will be off the books by then and who knows Tanaka may opt out, which will suck, especially if his elbow is messed up for the 1st 4 yr’s then gets fixed by the time he opts out

  4. Jesse Sanchez of says it’s for $8.27 million. Either way, it’s a new record for an international amateur, exceeding the $8 million figure that infielder Roberto Baldoquin got from the Angels earlier this month. Checking in at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, the 21-year-old Lopez touches the mid-90s with his fastball and posted a 3.12 ERA with a 28/11 K/BB ratio in 49 innings during his final season in Cuba’s Serie Nacional. The signing puts Arizona well over their allotted pool limit for the current 2014-15 signing period, so they will have to pay a 100 percent tax on the overage and won’t be able to sign anyone for over $300,000 during the next two signing periods. 5. Unfortunately, we’re STILL paying for that 2009 Championship. But, no doubt Cashman & Co has fukked up with overpaying & lengthy contracts. In many cases they were only competing with themselves. Which makes it even more amazing when we look at the position we find ourselves in today. No doubt the 3-Headed Monster of Capt Crunch, A-Rod, & Tex are killing us, with Beltran & Son, McCan’t, & The Doughboy to follow. You’re right Sal, I better tear down that calendar and put up SI or Playboy to put a smile on my face every morning!
