Closing Argument

Closing Argument

Billy “Pour Me A Double, Hold the Ice” Madden seems to have lost his A-Rod will never play  again crusade so he actually decided to  write a piece on the closer question  that faces the Yanks now that Robertson is pitching on the South Side of Chicago.. The only pitcher with much  closing experience on the Bombers “Championship  Caliber Team” is the often injured and still  recuperating Andy Bailey, but the Don B will be closing for the Yanks before Bailey

Once again I’m on an Island hoping for closer by committee, despite Girardi not tipping his hand as to  who  will get the job, Madden  senses Girardi would like to  see one player step  up  and own the gig

I got the feeling he would really like to have one closer, rather than a committee of two. But at this point, before the exhibition games have even begun, he’s keeping an open mind.

Then  again it might depend on how often Billy was nipping at  that Flask in his vest  pocket, him getting a feeling and that notion being a reality are two  different things

On hand to help  with the decision was Mo Rivera, not a bad pair of eyes to have as a consiglieri. Of course the two pitchers at the top of the closer list  are D-Bet, and A-Mil… In the lefty Miller particularly, Rivera sees the qualities that make for a successful closer.

“Early in his career, he had trouble throwing strikes,” he said. “But these last couple of seasons, since he’s been relieving, he throws strikes. He’s become a strike machine. Betances can do the same thing. He maybe didn’t get enough opportunities when he was first called up here. He has the arm and he just has to replicate his delivery.

But what about the closer mindset?

“You never know about that until you put them in that role.”

so  really despite what  guys are doing in BP or bull pen sessions we have to  wait until  real or Spring Training game situations, and even then Miller and Betances will have already  taken a shower long before the 9th inning shows up in any games in March, at least for the first  3 weeks or so

My Bad, yesterday I got Monday  and Tuesday mixed up, today  the Yanks open  in Clearwater, and yes I checked it’s Tuesday March  3rd.

Yesterday  the boys played a 6 inning game against Iron Mike the pitching machine

Today’s intrasquad game wasn’t really designed to tell us much, especially at the plate. Girardi said the Yankees used a pitching machine instead of a pitcher because they wanted to fire balls in the dirt at will — letting catchers practice blocking, and letting runners practice making reads — and they wanted to throw a lot of strikes for hitters to put the ball in play (which makes Chris Young’s strikeout all the more embarrassing)

OK so  any one of us could have done that  and saved Hal $2.5M, he would have loved that. From what  we read Young also got a single, which is more then some of his teammates were able to  do

He was hardly the only player flummoxed by “Iron Mike,” as Mark Teixeira, Didi Gregorius, Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellsbury, Stephen Drew and Garrett Jones combined to go 0-for-10. Chris Young had a single in the scrimmage,

ARod went 0-2, and does anybody besides me think A-Rod could be further humiliated and sent to SWB to  start  the season? The Daily News just  won’t let go..

The players may have been in the first  week of March  but Joe Girardi  was in mid season form spinning the day  away

“For so many guys it’s difficult, because there’s no timing mechanism,” Girardi said. “You don’t have an arm to follow, and that’s the timing part. The guys who have that little bit of a leg kick, it’s even harder for them.”

From LoHud

Some good stuff in this link, particularly on Tanaka, and what  the scrimmage was all  about

Didi Gregorius and Stephen Drew looked good together up the middle. … Mason Williams covers a lot of ground in center field. … Funny that neither Greg Bird nor Kyle Roller has a particularly good defensive reputation, but both made pretty good plays at first today. … Aaron Judge really is a presence when he steps into the batter’s box. … It’s still fun to watch the fast guys run fast. The Brett Gardner double was fun to see.

From George King the 3rd

Are you kidding me? King asked “It’s A Tall Order To Ask Of A-Rod” The dude is making $61M over the next 3 years, they’re asking him to be a DH and earn  some of the money, if he can’t do  that much, the MLBPA should revisit some of their iron clad CBA rulings..

Rodriguez’s problems are self induced, he didn’t contact a chronic disease unless you call  lying with a straight face a chronic disablement.. I’m sick of the owners gouging the fans, but i’m also  at my wits end with guys like Hamilton and Rodriguez. I don’t think their money should be cold turkey stopped but there should be a financial  adjustment made

I’m not buying the Yankees made an agreement now they have to uphold it, Rodriguez broke his agreement, so did Hamilton. Nobody said the Yanks or Angels had to  sign  either player, there was a risk involved, but the risk  should have been injury induced not running roughshod of the law..

A-Rod singing like a canary to  gain immunity from total banishment in an effort to  collect his $61M is a travesty, and the MLBPA should look at themselves in the mirror. As for Hamilton I believe his penalty comes down  on Wednesday.

Believe me, I totally get drug addiction, I understand the demons involved, I also know that Hamilton has made over $150M in his career, there’s not a wet eye in my house for J-Ham

  1. Of course we hope Hamilton can shake the jones, but we also need to see some strict penalties…His family isn’t dining at the local soup kitchen

As for A-Rod, man talk about humiliation, sending him to Triple A if he pulls a Soriano might be in the cards.. I hope he can still rake, or at least sort of rake…

looking forward to tonight, I hope my MLB App replays the game…

what a contrast between the NY media writing about the Yanks and the Rah rah pom pons going on in Boston.. Last time that media went this Kool Aid they labeled the Red Sox the greatest team ever lol… That’s when Crawford and Gonzalez joined them

Mookie Betts, Rusney Castillo, we’re coming to get you kid

  4. I won’t mention much don’t want to ruin watching the replay tonight, but a few things

Refsynder looks like he has an idea at the plate, but he looks a little rough on Defense.. Severino looks more bulked up, had 1 good inning then got dinked and dunked in his second inning of work

didn’t see much of his secondary pitches, maybe he wasn’t breaking them off… Lindgren doesn’t look ready for the varsity, maybe he was nervous, neither does Severino

Lingren looks like he has tough stuff to hit, but lack of command at the moment.. Severino maybe wasn’t using his change up or slider, without those pitches in his arsenal MLB hitters will hit his fast ball in the zone

the Yankee D was atrocious Pirela and Refsynder threw balls away, now we know why Drew is here, and it makes not getting Moncada even dumber

Yanks looked like last yr, got a bunch of hits early then did nothing the rest of the game, so far it’s the 8th inning

  5. Finally an extra base hit by heathcott double in the gap

    March 3, 2015 at 3:20 pm

  6. Bases loaded 1 out Refsynder had a chance to open eyes but he popped up.. Bird had a nice AB, looks like a good hitter… Typical Yanks majors or minors blew scoring opportunities.. Murphy a weak ground out to end then threat
