Sabathia Whistles While He Works

with 10 comments

CC Sabathia was very happy he made it through Spring Training unscathed, never mind the 8 ERA, the 3 losses pinned to his record, the 9 runs, 14 hits, in 10 innings or the 3 HR’s, .333 BAA, and 1.7 WHIP,  it’s the fact he stayed  in one piece through his 3 starts that made him and the  media whistle past the grave yard this March

I guess you can  look  at his stellar 2014 ST line, which  was  off the charts, 21 innings, 13 hits, .176 ERA, followed by his worst season  as a Yankee hurler, and we can just  trash the March  results with  this guy. He’s obviously  swept his putrid Spring training under the rug  and there is nothing we can  say or do  as bout it

Sabathia’s Bubble lands on planet  earth April 9th at 7:05 vs the hard hitting Blue Jays in the Bronx.

After muttering the 4 most feared words “I’m Not Worried About” another bad outing like the 3 he just had and JZ and Roc Nation better get real  creative if they want their newest client to bag some off the field money in commercials or whatever it is JZ was hired to  do.

Now that Sabathia has stolen Yankee money 2 straight seasons and looks primed to pull off a Bonnie and Clyde heist for the next 3, unless JZ and Beyonce are looking to use Sabathia as bait, in an  effort to lure his buddy Lebron James into  their camp, the rapper has his work  cut out  for him off the field

Yesterday Sabathia got rocked for 3 runs in the first  inning, his hands were wet, he couldn’t get  a grip on the ball, it was hot. He won’t have that  excuse next Wednesday night, but good chance he’ll  get a  pass from the media, and not if, but when  the Jays stand him up, then knock him out, they’ll  be some other reason why “ he’s not worried about”his first outing, he always starts slow, and or he only left a few pitches up, and sometimes you have to  tip  your hat  to  the other team

Right now Sabathia, Verlander, Cliff Lee and the retired Doc Halladay are reasons long term mega contract deals for pitchers are a real  bad risk..Unfortunately Tanaka is now the poster boy for handing over young pitchers who have accumulated 1282 innings from the age of 18 to  25, $153M over a 7 yr span

The 2016 pitching Free Agent Market looks very stout, but we can forget about the Yanks getting in the mix, they’ve been burned by Sabathia, Teixeira, Arod, Beltran, McCann, and Ellsbury.. If you want to  take stock in what El Pollo Martinez recently told Yankee hater Mad Dog Russo, you can  add Tanaka to  that list to

The Yanks had a very encouraging March  from a bunch of young kids, the closest to helping right now are Heathcott, Pirela, Refsynder, Lindgren, and possibly Mitchell  and Rumbelow. On the back  burner for 2016 / 2017  are Judge, Bird, Severino, and possibly Sanchez

A kid to keep  an eye on is Ramon Flores who  somehow managed to  lead the team in RBI’s, tied with Young at  8.. It looks like the first  call up  to replace an injured out fielder will be Heathcott, but if Flores rakes, he could jump into  the first  seat on the SWB shuttle

The buzz in camp after A-Rod’s surprisingly  decent Spring with the bat  and at  first base, has been Girardi  claiming he has no  set closer

Two  schools of thought here, 1. if you have two  closers that means you have none, 2. I like the idea of having a handful of confident pitchers mulling around the pen ready  to jump into  any situation.. I guess most managers want to have a designated closer, but why?

It makes their job easier? It means you have one guy who knows how to  finish? The 9th inning is a different beast?

We’ve seen starters come out of the pen in the Post Season and shut down the last  few innings.. Bochy would have been terminated with a lethal injection in San Francisco had he yanked Bumgarner from the game 7 World Series

It may  backfire but I like the flexibility and the mind set of both Betances and Miller, it’s either evolved mentality or both guys are scared shitless to take on the role

The guy with the most closing experience will be at single A ball in April.. Andrew Bailey has made strides coming back  from  an injurious shoulder set back, and from what  we read, or heard, they’ll keep him in the warm  weather while he continues to build arm  strength

Don’t be misled by his awkward stat line this Spring, he was charged with  3 runs in yesterday’s beating by the Nationals, but 2 of them  came on inherited runs thanks to  a 3 run Tater by Mike Carp  off Goody. Teams only hit 2.17 off Bailey, but he did walk  4 so his WHIP was escalated as was his ERA

He was starting to  reach 94, with a put away  slider, so he might still  get to  the varsity before say Jose Ramirez who has been a humongous disappointment

Is it me or has my favorite Yankee color analyst David Cone turned into  a YES shill?.. I get sticking up  for the players, especially the older dudes, but Cone has bent over backwards finding excuses for guys, Sabathia in particular.. Is there no one in that Booth we can trust  anymore? Makes you went to  flip  to  the road team  announcers if you have that  availability, but they’re just  as bad in the other direction

Where the hell is Jim Kaat when you need him?

  2. Sal–When I heard Cone’s comments yesterday, I thought the same thing you did. Perhaps the Randy
Levine mandate was sent out to all the YES personnel. On a different note, I was reading Mikey 21’s comments about both Fox Sports and CBS. He looks as if he’s trying to pick a fight with them and wants to force their hand (especially Fox) so that his contract with them can end up in a legal battle.
I am so glad all the spring training drama is finally ending. Heathcott, Refsndyer Severino, Lundgren and Pirela (before he was hurt) all look like they could contribute and I hope they all are with the big club soon.
Heathcott won the Dawson Award and it would be great if he has finally gotten the injury bug behind him and lived up to his first round draft billing.

  3. hey Noogsie, glad you saw that, it’s been creeping up on me for a few weeks now.. Levine better rethink his posture, NY fans aren’t as gullible as he thinks, YES needs a little Ying to their Yang

I missed Mikey, but from what little I heard as he opened a show he seemed to be mocking Fox and how they keep switching him back and forth.. I wonder how long before he takes an NFL network job?

Mikey follows the money, and that has to be where the money is at in his business

He needs to stop thinking he can hang with every talking point that comes up, be it sports or pop culture.. his prediction on the Mayweather fight is a case in point.. My cat knows more about that fight then Mikey

I’m with you on the youngsters, would love to see more of them get a shot… Hal will perk up more interest going that route.. and yes I saw the Heathcott award, good for him…

  4. Man, I really miss Kim Kaat. He always adhered to the old Aaron Neville tune, “Tell It Like It Is”. He never sugar coated, or looked for an excuse, on what you just saw right before your eyes on the field. I’ve missed so much lately I’m playing catch up baseball. Capt Crunch, between the F-bombs & bad outings, hasn’t exactly inspired confidence for the upcoming season. For him, the red light goes on this Thursday. No more excuses, son! Who woulda thunk that Arod would’ve had the Spring that he had & without the circus atmosphere?? He’s actually been pretty good. I’ve liked some of the kids I’ve seen this Spring, and believe they could help. This Flores kid, every time I looked up, he was doing something good. Could be a sleeper. Yeah, it would be nice if Heathcott could put the injury bug in the rearview mirror & realize his 1st pick potential. Boy, I miss Kaat’s honesty & clarity! To quote a line in a famous movie…..”Pop had Genco as a wartime Consigliere, look who I’ve got!”

  5. Yanks not off to a good start today vs Nats,Eovaldi gave up 3 runs in bottom of 1st,was getting hit hard.
Coney usually talks a lot of sabermetrics during the season,it seems everyone in spring training was just
full of optimism(shit) parroting the party line.I think they have too many announcers, you never know who will be doing the game.Someone will drop in from out of nowhere and pretend to know what is happening with the team. The Mets and most all of the other teams have a set of announcers that do all the games.
Usually when a team does not have a named closer, things don’t go so well.Neither Betances or Miller have ever been full time closers so things could get interesting when the season starts.Lets just hope that they have leads that need to be held!

  6. Just read that Earvin Santana, the Twins’s big pitching pick up this off season, has been banned for 80 games for testing positive for a banned substance (Stanozolol). Amazingly, in a statement released through the players union, Santana expressed surprise by the news……but does NOT plan to appeal. Ya just can’t make this shit up!!!

  7. Yanks beat Nats 4-3.Eovaldi pitched well after the first,Miller pitched the 8th gave up a hit,Betances pitched the 9th for the save, gave up a single and walk but no runs.Yanks scored 2 runs on opposite field double by McCann and homer by Drew and in the 8th single and 2 run homer by Young.Let the games begin!!!!!!!!! None of these guys that ever are suspended “knowingly” took banned substances, they just magically appeared inside their blood stream.

  9. Glad to hear Big D! Murphy, in spite of his Spring, always was the guy. I’ve liked this kid from the first moment I saw him. I think he has a huge upside.

  10. hey boys thanks for the updates, I had the Yankee game on radio but was constantly interrupted, heard the first inning and the D-Bet save..perfect, A-Rod 3 punch outs, and D-Bet pulled a D-Rob we’re off and running

I watched Sanatana pitch for 4 innings vs Boston and he shut them down.. kid looked like a skinny high school girl he didn’t know he was using lol

Winstrol is one of the oldest forms of PED, gotta time those portions better Ervin, just watch Ortiz do it he’s a master
