Balk This Way

After a 2 and 4 start  at home vs the Jays and Red Sox, the Yanks hit the road for 10 games vs the O’s, Rays and Tigers, as we enter the 2nd weekend of the season  the Bombers managed to  go 7-3, they  now sit tied with  the Red Sox and Jays (9-7) atop  the AL East

The Rays (8-8) somehow figured out a way to  take 2 of 3 from Boston, while the O’s (7-9) are now on a 4 game losing streak and Bucky’s boys are in sole possession of the AL East  basement.. The O’s will tackle Boston in Baltimore, the Jays go head to head with the Rays at the Trop, while the Yanks take on the Amazing Mets who  are on an  11 game winning streak at the Mall on Rivera Avenue

Yesterday the Bombers got “game changing” performances from Tanaka, Ellsbury, Betances, Miller, and Headley, sprinkle in a great pick and a knock  from Petit, and the plane flight home after a grind-em-out 2-1 victory over the mighty Tigers had to be quite a magic carpet ride

We start  with Tanaka who put two  outstanding outings together while in Bomber Road Grays.

The first one a 7 inning, 2 hit, 8 strikeout, white knuckler turned rout vs the Rays was a good feeling , but you thought, ‘yeah but it’s the Rays’.

Yesterday Tanaka tackled the powerful Tiger line-up who  for the most part the Yankee pitching held in check  for 4 games, so  in the back of your mind you thought maybe Miggy and company were ready to  break out and even the series

Tanaka after a shaky start settled in and pitched 6.1 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 2 BB’s, 6 K’s, a non  gaudy 3.22 ERA. He threw 94 pitches, and with a 5 to 7 ground ball to  fly ball  ratio, he sort of pitched to  the ball park, which isn’t a bad idea  in 30 degree weather at Comerica Park

After a double, a walk,  and a sac fly put the Tigers up 1-0 in the first  inning, Tanaka got the next 8 in a row before JD Martinez doubled in the 4th.. He set down the next 8 Tigers until his pitches flattened out with one out in the 7th, and Martinez smacked his 2nd double of the game. Tanaka was out of gas and after getting behind 2-0 to Cespedes, who missed a few hittable fast balls before Tanaka bounced two pitches hoping the Tiger slugger would expand the strike zone, but Cespedes never flinched and the walk sent Tanaka to  the showers

Wilson entered to pitch to Avila, but the Tigers sent up pinch hitter McCann, who  absolutely smoked a pitch that had double written all over it, but Headley made a diving stab to his right, then threw a bounce pass that Petit dug out for the force out at  2nd.

In came Betances who got a Castellanos on a pop  up after serving him 6 straight knuckle curves. D-Bet  had a 12 pitch 1-2-3 8th inning ringing up  2 punch outs in the process. At 18 pitches you wondered if Girardi  would send him out to get Miggy, then bring in Miller for V-Mart and JD Martinez in the 9th?

Girardi never flinched  and called on Miller who twisted the heart of the Tiger order into  a pretzel on 8  pitches..

A 4 pitch punch out sent Miggy back to  the dugout with a 2 for 13 series.. Headley made his 2nd hi light reel  defensive gem in 2 innings when he laid out to  rob V-Mart of a knock to  left field, then a 3 pitch punch out of the dangerous JD Martinez closed it out

The Bomber offense was improvised by the much maligned Ellsbury Doughboy in the 6th inning. He  walked, stole 2nd, went to  3rd on a Gardner ground out to  1st base and after Beltran struck out for the 3rd time, Ellsbury came home on a Balk.. The shift on McCann, combined with the dance moves at 3rd base by Ellsbury shook up Sanchez, he stepped off the rubber and made the pitch at the same time, so  the gaffe allowed the Yanks tie tie the game at 1-1

A cheap  run, but thems the breaks

Ellsbury once again created a run in the 8th when  he legged a single into  a double, Gardner bunted him  to 3rd, Beltran  was walked, and McCann slammed a grounder to Miggy at 1st base but the potential DP caromed off his glove long enough to plate Ellsbury with the winning run

This game was won by Tanaka, Betances and Miller on the mound, Headley  and Petit in the field, and Ellsbury with his bat  and legs

The Yanks only managed 3 hits, but the wrong guy if your Detroit  got one of them in the 8th inning.. Thanks to 6 walks and the 3 knocks the Yanks did have some opportunities but were 0-10 with RISP, and they left 7 men on base..

Beltran being smack  dab in the middle of the line-up just killed the Yanks

The Tigers were 0-5 with RISP and they  stranded 4 men on base

Ellsbury has his OPS just  a tick over 7 (.701) .286 / .384 / .317 / .701

Ellsbury, Gradner, and A-Rod all have OBP’s above 38%

The Yanks have scored 85 runs, that’s good for 2nd in baseball  behind Toronto

They’re 9th in OPS .74, with  5 AL teams ahead of them, 9th in Slg %, and 10th in OBP

They’re 2nd in HR’s with  21, 1 behind Toronto  and Baltimore

The pitching is 5th in ERA in the AL (3.34),

8th in BAA (.242),

1st in strikeouts (149)

6th in BB’s (51)

the Relievers are 3rd in ERA (2.03)

1st in strikeouts (65)

Only KC and Houston are better then the 13 earned runs they’ve given up

They  are in the top  3 Re: BB with (25) that needs to get better

1st in K/9 (10.04)

They might want to  cut down on their P/ PA, it’s 2nd worst at( 4.16) league ave is (3.88)

Good News

  1. What great series win, now we have to drive straight into the hurricane facing deGrom and Harvey, then a Lefty on Sunday

Both teams are feeling their oats, should be fun

Unfortunately I’ll be out of the office today, a sneak into it tomorrow but out again until Sunday night

also the Red Sox fan base gave me a room at All Sports Chat, it’s a pretty kool chat room, a Red sox fan owns the building and he’s paid the rent for me to drop content there

If you guys take out a disqus account you can post there.. It’s more or less a penalty box for NYY trolls that disrupt their chat room..

Good guys in that room, I hate seeing punks no matter what team they root for screw up a chat room so I think we’re helping them out

  2. Its amazing how things change in a week.Last Friday heading into Tampa,Yanks were 3-6 in the cellar. Then Arod blasted the Rays,Yanks swept them, took 3 of 4 from the Tigers(and could have won all 4)
and now are in first place!! No matter what happens this weekend, I STILL HATE INTERLEAGUE PLAY!!!
    Plus another Sunday night game!!-oy

  3. hahha, hey Big D…Inter league play sucks, a little more comfortable playing in the AL stadium, but man when the pitcher has to hit that’s rough, we’ll never get that Wang injury out of our craws

  4. I agree with you Big D, I HATE inter league play! A great series in Tigertown! Shoulda won all 4 games. Greedy? Maybe. But it was right there for the taking. And yes, Sal, I agree. We’re meeting the Mets at just the right time. The law of averages says they’re due to fuk it up now. 11 in a row is enough. Maybe we surprise them this weekend. See ya this afternoon Sal!

  9. 3 more yr’s donny, sounds like a political campaign slogan.. the question I have is why would Jay Z ink him to a deal… What’s he need to be his agent for, a Slim Fast commercial?

  10. I am always ready to hear from Yankee Jazeera—more encouraging signs regarding Soup Bone Sabathia.
Would love to know when last recorded a putout at first base.

    April 26, 2015 at 9:28 am

  11. I was thinking that Ellsbury DP took Harvey off the ropes but Sabathia really sucked in the 4th inning, those balls were rockets… The Biggest Loser is pathetic, maybe we saw his best in the first few starts

Mets also came into this game with Harvey confidence, you need to go toe to toe with him.. the Plawecki HR iced this game.. The one bad inning BS is getting tired

  12. hey Noogsie, too bad they have to run this guy out there every 5 days he’s toast

    April 26, 2015 at 9:32 am

Cafardo touts Boston for signing Ogando, but leaves out they gave Burnt Toast Uehara 40 yr’s old, 2 yr’s for $18M.. Keep running him and his 85 MPH fast ball out there Farrell, and hope the splitter is working on occasion

    April 26, 2015 at 12:58 pm

  14. Some of those balls hit off of Capt Crunch were absolut rockets! Anything hit that hard and going out that fast should have a stewardess on it!!!
