A Touch Of Gray

with 37 comments

Sometimes you just  have to  go  to  the Cliche Rack, thumb through it,  and pick  a good one that  suits the cause, last night the Bombers had to  “tip  their cap”  to  Sonny Gray  as the A’s took game 2 of this 4 game series 6-2

Gray  the young man  who leads the AL with a 1.82 ERA was pretty much on point last night, 8 inning, 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 BB’s, 4 K’s 1.82 ERA

“I mean, he’s really, really good. He’s got four pitches and he sits at 95 mph, he sinks it, he four-seams it, he’s got a really good curveball, so he’s got everything you want. He’s a No. 1 and he showed it tonight. He’s really good. We watched him in the playoffs coming out of college and you knew he was going to be really good.” — McCann, on Gray

In the Road Laundry weighing in at 220 LBs, Beano Capuano

Capuano cruised through the first inning 1-2-3, he got back on point to  what  we expected out of him in the 2nd loading the bases on 2 walks and a single, but escaped after an F/8.

He wasn’t so lucky in the 3rd, the A’s whacked 3 doubles and a single, Headley committed his 12th Error of the season when  a hard hit ball  kissed the edge of the infield grass and scooted through his legs to plate a run. I guess you can use it as an  excuse, the E6 was a potential 6-4-3 DP but you can’t say much  about the two  ringing doubles that Butler and Vogt hit following the Headley Gaffe

The first 5 A’s in the fateful  third inning reached base before Beano  retired the side,  maybe the bad luck bounce cost Cappy two  runs and the worm  turns, but thems the breaks

Beano  and the Yanks didn’t have much  of a chance with Gray dominating the Bomber Bats until  a McCan’t’ HR in the 5th, it was the Yanks first hit and run all on one swing, and it cut the lead  to 4-1.. Capuano retired 8 in a row until  a Vogt 2 out single in the 5th

Beano  retired the 1st batter in the 6th and Joey yanked him. So  give Capuano  credit, he couldn’t pick  up Headley in the 3rd but he sent 10 of the last 11 A’s he faced back to  the bench talking to themselves, and he did give the Bombers a chance to  come back, but a 4 run  cushion with Gray on the bump is a hell of a hole to  climb out of

It’s-A-Missle Rogers held the A’s in check for 1.2 innings, his only blemish, a single that Gregorius muffed the handle on a grounder, home cooking turned the E5 into  and knock.

Jake Lindgren  showed why my plea to  bring him into  a 3-3 tie the night before was ill-advised. With  the Yanks down  4-2 in the 8th he walked the first  batter, coughed up  a 2-run HR to Lawrie, gave up a double and a single before retiring the A’s. It wasn’t pretty, 1 inning, 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HR, 6.00 ERA

The Weather Report

What looked like clear skies after sweeping the Royals, 3 straight wins, the worst  team in the AL up  next,  two young Baby Bombers on the 25 man roster  getting a chance to  infuse some energy into this older team, turned gray fast when Heathcott was put on the DL with a quad, and Lindgren with the game well in reach  at  4-2 got flat out mugged to seal  a  victory for the last place A’s

What makes Lindgren’s outing even worse the Yanks managed to get two men on base in the 9th, had the Rook  held serve Joey no  doubt sends up Teixeira to bat  for Drew, maybe he should have anyway,  and worse case you move the line, but Drew who is mired in a 2 for 35 slump ended the game meekly with a pop  up  to first base

Hit(s) and Run(s)

McCan’t blasted his 4th HR in the last 4 games, the Tater ended Gray’s bid for a no  hitter.. McCan’t, a Paint the Black whipping boy, has hit safely in 8 of his last 9 games and 7 games in a row

He’s 10 for 30 in that  span, .300.. 5 of the 10  hits thanks to  the 4 Taters are for extra base hits

Gregorius 7 for 33 in his last 10 games had a double and scored a run

That  was it for NY scoring, the Bombers had 6 hits on the night, 4 off Gray  and two off Ferdie Rodriguez who  probably isn’t in the game if Lawrie doesn’t  undress Lindgren  in the 8th for the 2 insurance runs

The Yanks are 4-12 in the last 16 games, they’re right back to  1 game over .500 and are holding on to  a slim 1 game lead. That in itself is amazing, more to  do  with how bad the division is then how well  the Yanks are playing

It’s hard to  believe the only wins in that  16 game stretch  have come vs the Royals, they’re 0-5 vs Texas and Oakland, the two  worst teams in the AL West

Grant it both  teams were overdue for a run so  the Yanks caught them  at the wrong time

The good news, NY’s two  worst pitchers are out of the way, the bad news the A’s were 1-10 vs LHP before fattening up on Sabtahia and Capuano, that’s two  good appetizers to get  fattened  up on, they both  leave a lot to be desired as MLB starters

the Whole 9

  1. a real drowsy type of game, late night start, Gray dominating an already weak line-up, Capuano and Headley piling on the doom, sealed with a kiss when Lindgren got mugged
oh well RE: youth, back to square 1

    the good news : Bryan Mitchell: 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 11/6 GB/FB — 57 of 79 pitches were strikes (72%)

Refsynder who is mired got back on his horse with 2 knocks

  2. This is a bi-polar team. Hot/Cold Good/Bad Scary good hitting/nothing. We’re still in 1st place, but would be in 4th in the AL Central.
Just keep Mikey 21’s mouth shut about any posditive predictions. He mushed the Rangers and now that we’re near June, he might be forced to talk some baseball. Oh wait, he’ll soon be mostly gone for the summer. This coming week will be all about the Belmont Stakes. He’s odds on to mush that one, too.

  3. Your last paragraph about the A’s being 1-10 vs lefties until the Yanks came in says a lot. The Yanks are the only team over .500 whose starters are under .500(18-19). They need to get better starting pitching-along with better offense and defense-lol The pre season mantra of run prevention has gone in the toilet with their lousy defense. The A’s have the worst defense in the majors, but the Yanks have not made them pay for it so far this series. For a change,we can’t blame McCann for them losing!! I have never heard of this guy Flores but he was on the 40 man so they brought him up. Its very disappointing that Heathcott is on the dl already and Lindren came in last night and got bombed-not good.

  4. Flores has been up before for a cup of coffee Big D. Yeah, last night was a bummer. Was at Levon’s for an Amy & Jimmy V show. Got back to the room for the last 2 innings. A sour note to an otherwise great night. I can’t stand watching Inglorious anymore. He has the baseball acumen of a door knob. And he has that long looping uppercut swing of a HR hitter. Except, he’s not. Pentangle, or whatever the name of the hitting coach is, better take this guy for a walk talk and get him to hit the ball on the ground, put it in play, and maybe it finds a hole or he could leg it out. It ain’t happenin’ the other way. Btw, how much longer can we go on with Drew and his .157 BA??? He’s another one with a classic uppercut HR swing. I think we need to take the both of them out on the Causeway and do a “drop the gun……take the cannolis” thing, if ya know what I mean….

    • Hey fellas terrific stuff

Eovaldi pitches good when you give him an 11 run lead, you can see why he led the NL in base hits allowed last yr
I can’t brlieve Cashman had to give up Prado and Phelps to get this kid and Jones
      Another Tomato can
Joey is getting in McCant’s shit
He should be in that bum Cashman’s grill for putting this abortion of a staff together
This kid Hahn can pitch Evo is a 6 or 7th starter on a last place team

      May 30, 2015 at 11:24 pm

      May 30, 2015 at 11:30 pm

  8. I hear ya about the drums Big D! But the game itself is torture to watch!

    May 30, 2015 at 11:41 pm

    • Watching Eovaldi is like watching peoples clap on 1 and 3

      May 30, 2015 at 11:46 pm

  9. The media should be saying time to cut their losses with Eovaldi

    Yeah Boston looked bad tonight
Good job by YES putting the Greene clip on lol
They put on the Robertson implosion the other day
It’s about all they can do that and retire more numbers more bobble head nightswhen does Shane Spencer get a plaque
Hahn is a good pitcher Bob that’s why he’s in rhythm
They’re trying to give Pirela the 2nd base job if he can only take advantage
That’s his first hit vs Rhp
    Maybe he gets going

    May 30, 2015 at 11:43 pm

    • Holy shit thanks Lawrie maybe Cashmsn should broker a trade

      May 30, 2015 at 11:49 pm

    May 31, 2015 at 12:27 am

    • Girardi going full out binder

      May 31, 2015 at 12:38 am

  14. Thankfully the A’s can’t play D either

    May 31, 2015 at 12:45 am

    • Beltran earning the bennies tonight a little help from some leaky D
      At least some breathing room

Nice hustle by Flores if Gregorius can get Pirela up with the lefty on the mound might add another run

      May 31, 2015 at 12:52 am

  16. If Betances can somehow navigate his way thru the 8th, we might be home free.

    May 31, 2015 at 12:53 am

    • Yeah Joey is gone managing do that’s a plus
      It’s on the talent now

This would be a flat out bank robbery winning the way Evo pitched
      But long way to go

      May 31, 2015 at 12:59 am

  17. Again. WTF! When is Pentangle or whatever the hell the name of the batting coach is, when is he going to get Inglorious to hit the ball on the fucking ground & not in the air??? Jeez!

    May 31, 2015 at 12:57 am
