Beltran and Pen Write a Happy Ending

Carlos Does The Mambo

I haven’t seen that many singles since  my Uncle Bob’s ex wives all  showed up at once  to collect their alimony checks…

21 of them  to be precise, not single wives, the amount of singles as in base hits the Yanks and A’s hit Saturday Night / Sunday Morning.. A game that  somehow the Bombers managed to  steal from Oakland 5-3

Thanks to Nathan Eovaldi’s inability to pitch to a professional level, for 4.2 innings, this game was harder to watch then Sunday night Baseball on ESPN

The Yanks strung 3 singles together in the 1st inning to take a quick 1-0 lead, they accomplished that  feat  without
Ellsbury or Gardner contributing to  the station to station onslaught, Headley, ARod, and McCan’t did the honors

Eovaldi quickly returned the favor and  coughed up  3 singles of his own in the bottom half of the 1st, only a tremendous peg by Ramon Flores who was playing left field to Bubba McCan’t saved a run from scoring.. Oakland didn’t score but the table was set for another  night of hit-o-matic with Eovaldi MC-ing the event

Only the Baseball Gods know what  would have happened in the 2nd inning if Flores didn’t make another tremendous catch on a pop up in foul ground. The A’s had led off with a single, but Flores’s gem  contributed to  another scoreless inning

For the third straight inning Eovaldi  coughed up  a lead off single, he wasn’t satisfied with just  one knock  against, so he added 3 more, plus a sac fly and the A’s grabbed the lead 2-1. What made matters  worse Jesse Hahn fresh off a complete game win over the Tigers was starting to get in a groove and he set down  11 straight before Pirela got a gift infield hit in the 5th inning

The A’s picked up 2 more knocks in the 4th  to make it 3-1. Eovaldi was more annoying then  a tooth ache, he only induced 5 swing and misses, out of 96 pitches, he would get 2 strikes on batters but couldn’t put them  away, if he got behind in the count he’d groove a hittable pitch.

After watching this kid hurl  57.1 innings, you know why he’s given  up  76 hits and why teams are batting .325 off him.. He’s given up 19 more hits then  innings pitched, he’s struck out only 42 batters in 248 PA’s, and LHB’s destroy him to  the tune of

.375 / .435 / .510 / .944..

He’s channeling his disturbing 2014 season where he led baseball in hits against, and you can  see why Miami jettisoned a young  cost controlled pitcher out of their town, he’s not very good

I’d say  send him on the same path that Boston has sent Joe Kelly, back to  the farm  to become a reliever, but I don’t think he can throw swing and miss strikes, and he simply can’t put guys away, he’s a poor man’s NY Yankee version of Phil Hughes

The Evo madness ended with two out in the 5th, after Lawrie whacked the 11th hit off him, and Joey instead  of attempting manslaughter, yanked the kid and finally brought in a professional pitcher Chasen Shreve who actually infused some life back into  the Bomber dugout

Shreve was brilliant, he faced 4 batters and struck them  all  out

Once the bleeding stopped,  the Yanks now down  3-2 got a monster 2 run clutch HR from Beltran in the 6th  to take a 4-3 lead.

Carlos added to his big night with a clutch  single in the 8th  after Teixeira singled, stole 2nd base thanks to  the terrible A’s defense falling asleep. Tex and Beltran added the big insurance run that gave Betances and Miller some breathing room to  close it out

Hit(s) and Run(s)

Everybody but Gardner and Flores had base hits..

Headley had 3 hits, and an RBI in the 5th  to make it 3-2. One of his hits was the craziest bunt you’ll ever see as the ball  danced on the first base line until it stopped on the chalk fair..

Beltran had 2 hits, 3 RBI’s, and he got the only extra base hit for either team, the crushing HR over the CF wall, a vintage  Beltran Blast from yesteryear, and the big insurance run in the 8th

Gregorius, Pirela, ARod, Tex, and McCan’t all had a knock apiece

Yanks were 3-7 with RISP they left 6 men on base

Eight straight games with an RBI for McCann. He’s the first Yankees catcher to do that since Yogi Berra in 1956.

Man  mentioning Bubba in the same breath  as Yogi is blasphemy.. McCan’t has done a better job lately but lets not get carried away I don’t care what  some BS stat says

Joey Gibberish

“Sometimes it takes a while to get going,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “He’s feeling good about his swing and came out of it. He kept working at it and now you’re just seeing Carlos.”

Beltran has been stuck in the mud for a yr and a month, his OF play is  pathetic, he hijacked the Yanks for $45M over 3 yr’s, and is a negative defensive player, it’s about time he’s contributing something

“It takes guys a while to get going,’’ manager Joe Girardi said of Beltran, who has four homers. “His track record tells he will come out of it.’’

Yeah it’s only been over a year, and his track  record was put together as a much younger man.. Beltran  was 11 for 68 in April  with no HR’s and a .162 BA / .481 OPS/  you know how bad that is for a #3 hitter????

Girardi actually didn’t seem too down on Eovaldi, who’s lasted fewer than five innings in two of his past three starts. “I just don’t think he had his great command tonight,” Girardi said. “But as I said, I thought he did a pretty good job of minimizing it. They had 11 hits in 4.2 innings and you look at the first three hits that setup that inning where they scored: you get a ball that goes just past Head, you get a ball that kind of squeaks through the infield, Vogt hits one off the end of the bat with some funny spin. And then they hit a couple of balls hard, but that’s part of the game. Sometimes you get those outs and sometimes you don’t.”

Are you kidding me, if Teixeira didn’t save Gregorius on two  terrible throws to  first base, Flores didn’t pull a Superman  act on defense,  Beltran  didn’t actually earn his paycheck, or if Shreve and to  a lesser extent Wilson didn’t finally bridge the gap to D&A so  they  could get the  last 7 outs, Girardi  would be doing a flat 99  for manslaughter, he was ready to kill this kid in the 4th inning

With no  help in sight, Hal not wanting to  spend money on some real pitching, unfortunately we’ll have to  keep  watching DFA Sabathia, Phil Evo, and possibly Beano Capuano until Nova gets here.. Hopefully soon Severino  and Mitchell  can pitch their way to  the varsity, and we can only hope TJ Tanaka can  give them  a few  Quality starts before some other body part goes south on his $175M frame

  1. Yanks should be arrested for stealing a win, as bad as the A’s are they’ve managed to make them look like the LaRussa Oakland teams from back in the day

They better win today, if they want any chance of winning the 7 game road series.. Pineda will have to toss a shutout against the King tomorrow… If Hernandez pitches like he did vs Tampa they better hope they can take that game into extra innings

  2. Sal, NOTHING is harder to watch than a Sunday night game on ESPN!!!! You heard Joey Gibberish say in the Post Game BS session, they really like this kid (Phil Evo), so we’re not going to see them raise the white flag on him for quite a while. That would be admitting a Mushman mistake. Man, that must’ve been some scene when all of Uncle Bob’s ex’s showed up at the same time lookin for their checks! Had many a bad dream about my ex, but that’s a fukking nightmare!!!

  3. Eovaldi has given up more hits/inning and struck out fewer batters than last year! So much for Larry the Stable guy getting him straightened out-maybe its just impossible. How GeniusJoe can say giving up 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings, not even going 5 is good is beyond idiotic, But he will never tell the truth or throw one of his players-or Cashman-under the bus.Pirela hit into a dp,then got credit for a hit which was really an error, then was replaced defensively. He should not sign any long term leases. The A’s defense, worst in the majors, helped the Yanks last night.Beltran finally came out of his coma, lets hope he does not relapse any time soon.I liked Flores in the field,he seems to have a good arm,he should platoon in left with Young, hopefully he can start hitting soon.Joe Kelly is starting vs the Rangers today.Moscone like the old alka seltzer commercial relief is just a phone call/email away-lol

  5. hey fellas great stuff.. I dropped the Ann coulter thing to safe keep it I found it on my phone, sometimes those articles disappear

and yes on Joe kelly, my bad making it sound like they had already jettisoned him to Pawtucket, in reality he has pen experience and they were thinking of returning him to the bull pen after a few shoddy starts, and once Masterson comes back

The do have a slew of games in a row 20 in 21 days I believe, and have gone to the 6 man rotation, so Kelly is still a starter, lets hope he stays a starter

thanks for the spot Big D

My guess Kelly’s outing yesterday keeps him in the rotation, and it’s about time Uehara coughed one up,
