Drew Keeping Up With The Jones

with 22 comments

This game two vs the Mariners started with  both starting pitchers on complete opposite ends of the spectrum..

CC Sabathia per Bob Klapisch, his anonymous scout, and about 98% of  Bomber Universe had Sabathia heading to  the glue factory, we’ll  drive and pay for the gas if Hal pulls the trigger

In  the Starbucks corner,  25 yr old Mike Montgomery one of the pieces that  went to Tampa from KC in the James Shields deal, a kid who  was called up  from AAA Tacoma where he was sporting a 3.74 ERA, to  replace the  injured southpaw James Paxton, one of the young Mariner stud pitchers that carry King Felix’s bags

Montgomery was brilliant, he threw six innings of one-run ball, gave up just four hits, and left with a no-decision

“I don’t have enough adjectives to explain how good he was tonight, but it was outstanding,” said Lloyd McClendon.

I have to  agree with Lord Mac, after a 1-2-3 1st inning, Montgomery gave up a pair of 2 out singles in the 2nd but Johnny Murphy grounded out to Cadillac Cano  to end the threat

With  1 out in the 3rd Gardner induced a 1 out walk, but it was clear he swung through strike 3, the Mariner bench  didn’t appreciate home plate ump Mikey Dimuro or 3rd base enforcer Tony Randazzo’s safe call.

The ice cold Chris Young chilled Seattle’s straw boss McClendon by popping up to 1st base for the 2nd out. ARod then incited the riot of all  riots when he too  got away with a checked swing strike 3 and walked.

That  was it, Lord McClendon then went all one flew over the cuckoo nest and visited each ump with a tirade that  would have made a Lou Piniella rant look like a lazy day at the park  with Ron Gardenhire…. Will Little the 1st base ump  ran Lord Mac and catcher Mike Zunino, but Mac got his money’s worth, as well he should have, the umps blew both  calls

After the brouhaha  ended, Teixeira didn’t waste any time, he smacked the 1st 4 seam  fastball  from Montgomery down the left field line for an RBI double. Unfortunately Headley couldn’t pile on the insult to injury and struck out with men on 2nd and 3rd to end the crazy inning, Yanks up 1-0

Sabathia after a lead off double, a walk, in the 1st inning, and a 1-2-3 2nd inning, immediately, gave the run back in the bottom of the 3rd on 3 singles by Jackson, Cano,  and Cruz, the only surprise, there was only 1 run scored.

Montgomery went on to  get the next 9 out of 10  Bombers, only a Gardner double in the 5th interrupted his domination of this Jekyll and Hyde Bomber offense, a terrific 6 inning debut for  the kid

Sabathia got in trouble in the 4th after 2 singles, but a nifty DP bailed him out. He was in hot water in the 5th  after a lead off single and Headley’s 12th Error of the season, but Soup Bone got Cano, Cruz and Seager who intelligently tried to  plate a run by bunting, forcing Sabathia to make a play that  surprisingly he did make. The 3 AB’s were apparently a microcosm of the Mariners first 52 games of the season

In the 6th inning the Mariners sandwiched two  singles around an F/7 and a strikeout, but the 2 out knock was all Joey could take and he unceremoniously yanked Sabathia after only 94 pitches. It’s not like he brought in a stopper, in came $50 dollar car David Carpenter, who  really should be on the first  bus out of Seattle this morning

Carpenter on cue coughed up  an RBI double to Austin Jackson who  flat out killed his old team last night with 4 hits and a walk. Carpenter got the 3rd out but the M’s were now leading 2-1..

RHP Mark Lowe replaced Montgomery in the 7th, and was greeted by  consecutive singles from pinch hitter Gregorius and Johnny Murphy. With no outs Gregorius was on his way  to  3rd base on the Murphy knock  when he tripped over his own feet. Yes he was tagged out, and yes he looked like the drunken accountant at the Company Picnic softball game

Yanks could have had men on the corners with no  outs, instead man on 1st 1 out. Drew went down on an  F/9 and Furbush  came in to punch out Gardner and the Yanks were left just  shaking their heads in disbelief at  the Gregorius gaffe

Carson Smith  mowed down pinch hitter Garrett Jones, ARod and Teixeira on 10 pitches in the 8th, setting up Fernando El Plantain Rodney for the kill in the 9th

Headley led off the 9th  with  a walk, but El Plantain got Beltran  and Gregorius and was 1 out away  from a  nice 2-1 Mariners win, that  had their starting catcher and their manager sitting in the clubhouse

McCan’t shocked the world with a pinch  hit single to  keep  the game alive. Drew matched the  surprise and raised  the shock treatment to  another level when with one pitch away  from  handing the M’s the win, he unexpectedly roped a double to  right field to  tie the game at  2-2

The Yanks got great relief pitching to  keep Seattle at 2 runs, Shreve pitched a scoreless 7th, he got some help  from bad base running by Seager, something so-so teams seem to  constantly do… Lindgren blew covering 1st base on a grounder that Teixeira nabbed, but the E-1 didn’t bite him, and the Rook pitched a scoreless 8th

Betances came in to hold the game at 2-2 in the 9th…After a lead off walk and a stolen base, he kicked into high gear  and mowed down Smith and Cano on punch outs  then got Cruz on a 6-3 ground out

The Yanks had the bases loaded in the 10th  but Beltran  hit into  a DP to kill that buzz… Wilson  made a tremendous diving catch to double up Weeks and Seager then got Morrrison on another 6-3 ground out to  set up  the 11th inning heroics

Gregorius led off the 11th  with  a single, McCan’t killed the buzz with a DP, but Drew singled and Gardner kept the line moving with a double. Out went Wilhelmsen in came Beimel to  face Jones, who  sent a 2-0 pitch into  the right field seats for a 3 run HR to put the Yanks miraculously up 5-2

Miller made the game a white knuckler in the bottom of the 11th..

A hard hit single, a HBP and a clutch Cano knock sandwiched around 2 outs made it 5-3,  with Cruz coming up  as the winning run. Miller got the best of that  heavyweight matchup by punching out Cruz on a nasty 2-2 slider to end the damn game

Watch the Paint Dry

Kudos to the Paint the Black  whipping boy fraternity Drew, Gregorius, and Black Hole Jones who  I kill on a daily basis, they  flat out saved the day, I guess you could say, it’s about time they  earned their Stripes

Th Yanks did something they’ve never done in the history of their franchise, they pitched 5 different LHP in a game,  Soup Bone, Lindgren, Shreve, Wilson and Miller . Yanks went from having 1 LHP to  having nothing but LHP sans Betances, and the two  useless mops Carpenter and Rogers

If I’m running this ship, I send Carpenter packing, keep Lindgren  up,  and go with 5 Lefties and Rogers.. We dropped Beano Capuano’s splits the other day, he gets RHB’s out easier then LHB’s..Shreve  and his split-change grip also has reverse splits, Wilson, Lindgren, and Miller can  get both L and RHB’s out.

Carpenter stinks, I don’t care what  hand he throws with, I DFA him by 10 AM this morning and send him on his way, I don’t care how unconventional the pen looks.. Once Tanaka gets back and Nova gets here, you can flip Capuano and get yourself another RHP in the pen, until  then, I go  with the best  available talent and that leaves Carpenter as the odd man out

Carpenter has the velocity, he has the work in progress Slider and  splitter, but his results are less then  desirable and you can’t be nursing this guy through his troubles, at least not in high leverage situations, not with the division up  for grabs

Gregorius, Drew, and Pirela, went 5 for 10, the good

The Bad and Ugly, Chris Young has become an automatic out he’s 7 for 59 since May 1st,

Young is batting a robust .118, he has 2 doubles, a HR, 2 RBI’s, 3 BB’s and 16 K’s.. I’m not sure what  you do  with him, but batting him 2nd like Joey did last night probably  doesn’t make any sense.. Although if he is gonna snap out of it the 2 hole is a soft landing

Black Hole Jones will no doubt have #Mikey 21 at least start  to  talk  some baseball, after all #Mikey was Jones’ biggest  supporter in the off season, and #Mikey never lets one of his takes go  via the wayside once they  start  to produce.. We can only hope  the Fat Man lays off jinxing Jones who  has started to  find a stroke

He’s 10  for his last 31 in May  and June, with 2 HR’s, 7 RBI’s, he’s walked twice and struck out 8  times in those 31 AB’s, last night was his coming out party… He did hit a pinch hit 3 run Tater on May  22nd in that  10-9 loss to  the Rangers, but while that HR brought the Yanks a bit closer (10-8) it didn’t compare to  what BH Jones pulled off last night

Not sure if you run  him out there everyday what happens, he is a role player, but might as well give him the start  today vs the RHP Walker

Sabathia gave the Yanks a solid 5 innings, Girardi yanked him maybe at  the right time, Jackson was chewing on that Soup Bone all night, but  you can’t bring in Carpenter to  replace your one time Ace, that’s just  a slap in the face to Sabathia, the team, and the fan base, wake up Joey, and Cashman get busy replacing Carpenter, the experiment is starting to smell like dumpster funk

  1. most unexpected win of the season, the Black Hole Knights all came through

I can live with 5 innings from Soup Bone, do were have a choice? Maybe he ventures into the 6th every once in a while

I know the 6 LHP’s in the pen is equally crazy but what do you do with 3 Mops / human white flags, Carpenter Capuano and Rogers?

Maybe get a RHP in here to replace Carpenter, but not Martin, DFA Rogers and move Capuano to the long man mop

  3. I turned the game off after Beltran hit into the dp,I had enough! Jones can hit,he has been on my fantasy teams for 3 years,he got off to a bad start and not playing hurt him. They should give him the at bats they are wasting on Young. CC actually pitched well enough to win,the Yanks never score for him and play lousy defense behind him as a bonus. GeniusJoe was playing with fire bringing him out for the 6th,then compounding the error by bringing in Carpenter, the same mistake he made vs the A’s on Thursday-some people never learn. Carpenter is just useless,he simply cannot get batters out. They desperately need to find a righty reliever, just cannot keep throwing Carpenter out there.Could not believe Didi got a hit, then fell down!! WTF!!! Almost as incredible as Drew getting the game tying hit! Even a blind squirrel can find an acorn-lol Tanaka time today-time to start the clock on how long until his next dl stint-lol

  4. Sal I did check it out,he was one of the Killer B’s,I remember he pitched vs the sux in spring training on tv,he did well, then got injured.I did not like trading him, lefties are hard to find.Shreve has really been a good surprise,
unfortunately Carpenter has just been horrid. They REALLY need to get a righty-too bad they didn’t resign Joba!!!!-lol Old Gas Can is a million times better than any righty they have, not including Betances.

    June 3, 2015 at 12:19 pm

  5. can’t believe we can’t find who they’re sending down WTF….where are the twitter guys, sleeping..???

      June 3, 2015 at 3:38 pm

  8. Stupid bitch Waldman was having a wet dream over Tanaka’s first 2 innings
Sterling reminded the dope that Felix had 21 pitches in 3 innings so you never know
She snaps back oh no it’s not raining and there is no mud on the mound to mess tanaka up
Within 10 minutes 3 hits the score is tied and only a great play by Flores saved the lead
They should ship her and Brickhouse on the same bus as Carpenter
    What happened to mccant

    June 3, 2015 at 4:31 pm

    June 3, 2015 at 4:40 pm

  10. Capuano in the pen ?

Girardi messing with a good thing

Mariners being paid by Hal to fold like a pair of pants ?

This game is far from over the radio side is a bit to giddy

    Need some insurance runs
Per the radio mcCant has foot soreness hate to lose the depth

    June 3, 2015 at 5:24 pm

  11. If Beano blows this he should never get on the plane home
    Neither should Girardi

    June 3, 2015 at 5:30 pm

  12. Playing with fire bringing in Rogers

    June 3, 2015 at 5:34 pm

    June 3, 2015 at 5:37 pm

    • Wow HBP with 2 strikes that’s rough
Ma and Pa ain’t so giddy
