Tanaka Get’s Straight A’s

with 10 comments

2B Rob Refsnyder: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB — 20-for-49 (.408) with 16 walks and five strikeouts in his last 15 games –

Not sure what Cashman is waiting for, except Private Ryan is now playing 3rd base  in is rehab starts, good chance Headley’s calf is worse then  expected, and Figgy Figueroa despite 2 doubles on Thursday  shouldn’t unpack  all of his bags

This infatuation  with Ryan  and Drew has gone beyond Twilight Zone status… With two LHP’s starting for Boston this weekend, if Headley isn’t ready to  go, Figgy could be on a shuttle back to SWB…

 Tanaka Get’s Straight A’s

Go  ahead and get excited  about Masahiro Tanaka’s 7.2 innings, 2 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K’s, 114-76 pitches, and 19 retired in a row outing yesterday, me I’m excited but not convinced the Yanks have their Ace back..

I wouldn’t be shocked if we got news he’s been shut down, or in his next outing he has more of a stinker 2nd inning like yesterday’s Oakland experience,  then the brilliance  that transpired from the Semien  ground out to  end the 2nd inning to  the Semien punch out that  finished off his 7.2 innings, 114 pitch gem…

Tanaka has been the Mother of All Enigma’s that’s for sure, is he hurt, is Pedro Martinez right about his physical condition ?

“I don’t see him healthy all year,” Martinez said. “And I don’t see him healthy right now. I’ll be brave enough to say he’s not completely healthy right now.”

Or will Tanaka make El Pollo Martinez his Daddy and become the $175M Ace the Yanks paid for despite his famous elbow tear?

In yesterday’s matinee Masahiro  Tanaka started out like the Tanaka of old for 3 batters with a dominating a 1-2-3 first inning… He then morphed into Hideki Irabu in the 2nd inning when he quickly lost  the 1-0 lead Babe Gardner had given him thanks to Babe’s 10th HR of the season

The 2nd  inning went south quickly starting with a catchers interference, followed by 2 doubles, and a walk, when the smoke cleared after a 7 pitch  1st inning, Tanaka had thrown 24 pitches, gave up 2 runs, 1 earned, and the lead had vanished…

From that point on a switch flipped on, and the only blip on the Tanaka radar screen was a strike out / wild pitch allowing Billy Butler to  reach  base  in the 4th inning… Tanaka mowed down the next 13 A’s in a row then  handed the ball  to Chasen Shreve with  2 out in the 8th inning and the Yanks hanging on to  a paltry 4-2 lead

The Bombers tacked on two  big runs in the bottom of the 8th  to give Shreve  who got 3 batters out giving up  1 hit in the 9th and Warren  who  struck out Butler to  end the game a comfortable cushion

Tanaka had thrown 114 pitches, easily the most he’d thrown all season but also the most by any Yankees starter since Brandon McCarthy threw 116 last August.

The rotation remains the biggest question mark for a team that has held first place in the American League East for the past week. Thursday was just the fourth time since May 12 that a Yankees starter got an out in the eighth inning. By contrast, the Yankees have had 24 games since then in which the starter has failed to finish the sixth.

If the Yanks are gonna continue to be a playoff bound team, and Cashman isn’t gonna  cash out on some of his top  prospects in an effort to  snag Cueto, Samardijia, or Hamels at the dead line, then Pineda and Tanaka are gonna need more outings like yesterday

The touted bull pen could easily  become over worked  if all  5 starters are yanked after 15 to 18 outs on a consistent basis, so  elbow be damned, Joey Daycare will need to  ride Tanaka and Pineda a bit harder in the 2nd half…

The Bomber line up  looked especially anemic on paper in the rubber game vs Oakland but with  a huge 3 game series in Boston lurking A-Rod who is mired sat, and Teixeira who  was all world on Wednesday  was DHing..

Pirela was shipped back  to AAA, perennial 4A infielder Cole Figueroa was brought up  to play  for the injured Headley, Chris Young was in the line-up  despite a paltry split vs RHP, and it looked like the last 4 batters in the line-up could have been  potential  automatic outs

Not the case, Figueroa batting 9th came up  big smacking two  clutch doubles, while playing a flawless third base, Drew had a single, a walk, and scored a run after Figgy doubled and Ellsbury knocked them both in with  a clutch knock in the 4th  to  give the Yanks a 4-2 lead

Figgy came through  again in the 8th smacking a 2 out ground rule double…Young who had walked and Figueroa scored on a Semien throwing error to  blow the game open 6-2

the Bombers scored their first  two  runs on a Gardner Tater in the first  and an Ellsbury walk, a Gardner single and a Teixeira RBI knock  to  tie the game 2-2 in the 3rd inning

It was all  Tanaka Time from that point on

Pineda vs Buchholz tonight

Nova vs Rodriguez Saturday Night

Eovaldi  vs Miley on Sunday

  1. with two LHP’s going for Boston sending Pirela down was a drag…Although Figgy was instrumental in that win yesterday so a good call by Cashman

If Headley isn’t ready I can’t see the Binder using Figueroa in games 2 and 3… Wondering if Ryan comes back Saturday?

  2. Boston has the pitching match ups in their favor, the younger legs the better talent, why on God’s Green Earth would the Yanks take them lightly??????

We’re lucky to win 1 game this weekend

  3. Sal–I love your “Joey Claps” tag in the previous article. He does it every time he comes to the mound to pull a pitcher. It’s usually 3, but sometimes 2 claps. Permission to use it, please?
Over time I’ve noticed a CC move also. When he surrenders a hit and the ball is returned to him, he will catch it with his glove. Not so, if he records an out, at which point, he will catch it bare handed when it is soft tossed back to him by the infielder, whomever that happens to be. These are critical “predictions” you can make with someone to get a free drink at a bar.

    • hey Noogsie I’m not sure Joey Claps is mine, I think you mentioned it and I just wrote it into the script, we all get publishing lol…. I can’t remember if we’ve used it in the past or not, but regardless, you brought it back to life the other day…

  4. I thought they would send Petit out instead of Pirela but they are worried about 3b. Figueroa is a dumpster dive pick up from the Rays,Yanks could have a dumpster platoon of Petit(Astros) & Figueroa if Headley can’t play. Nice to finally beat Chavez,A’s defense is the worst in the majors. BABE Gardner made the All Star team,I am glad for him,he has come a long way,is much better than when he first came up,he is one of the rare Yankees that were drafted that made the All Star team. Now off to femway,at least the Sunday game is not at night, although the Saturday fox game is. Time for the Yanks to lay the smack down on the fkn sux!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Hey Big D, yeah that’s probably how it goes Petit not Ryan on Saturday and Sunday.. pick your poison

Listening to Sandy Ah Alderson today was a hoot….

      Maybe Headley comes back tomorrow

Jones in that right field yikes, don’t know what’s wore Young hitting vs RHP or Young playing the tougher RF in baseball…

  5. I’m hearing Private Ryan played 3rd in his re-hab and probably will be in Beantown sometime this weekend. Hope Al brakes out of his funk up there.

    • hey mB, yeah he did but if I’m not mistaken Girardi did say they would evaluate him during the break… I think D has it right Petit goes vs the LHP, or Headley gets a shot and gets back in there for two games

Me I take the shot and lets go, then again i’m used to taking shots to get through long grinds lol…
