Baseball and Beyond

Simply Indispensable

with 10 comments

Raise your hand if you thought Alex Rodriguez would return back to baseball and become the “Straw that Stirs the Drink”

There were a few folks who  thought he would be pretty good, none of them  worked in the media, I thought he should go  away, man I’m glad he didn’t

The Yanks had to slip  into  grinding mode last night, we expected as much  after a 4 day lay off, but thanks to Crush Young who  eats LHP alive, and the indispensable Alex Rodriguez  the Yanks beat Seattle 4-3..

ARod  hit the go  ahead Tater in the 7th inning, his 3rd in the last 4 games, he’s sporting a sick 38% on base, and a giddy .909 OPS, with 19 HR’s, 52 RBI’s, not to mention he’s the Yankees  Dalai Lama on the bench  and in the clubhouse,

Jeter laid the torch on second base in 2014 as he thanked the world for showering him with  gifts as he played out his illustrious career, lucky for the NY Yankees ARod picked it up and is guiding a 25 man roster to hopefully their first playoff appearance in 2 yr’s

Yanks Win 4-3

The Yanks are now 49-40 on the season, that’s good enough to be 4.5 games in front of Toronto and Tampa, the struggling O’s dropped to 5.5 back and Mike the Mick Trout blasted the Red Sox  7.5 behind the Bombers

The Yanks have 73 games left, there is a decent chance 90  wins could give them  the AL East  Title, so  they  would need to  go 41-32 the rest of the way, that’s a .561 Winning Percentage. Presently they have a .551 WP, so  there is a lot of work to do despite the euphoric vote of confidence bestowed on them by  the Media, the YESmen, and Ma  and Pa Pinstripe

I don’t want to  appear flippant, but if we’re all  whimsical over the 49-40 record, in order to  carry Rudy off the field and win this Division our heroes need to  kick it up  a notch in the second half, or at least pro rate their first  half result

Messy-Hiro Tanaka

I have to  stop  thinking Masahiro Tanaka is Max Scherzer, in fact I shouldn’t mention him in the same breath as Keuchel, Greinke, deGrom, Sale, Price, Gray or Cole either..

Tanaka doesn’t qualify in the MLB leaders race with  only 74 innings pitched, but if we qualify pitchers from  60 innings we get a tale of the tape on the Bomber co-Ace..

He’s 33rd in ERA (3.65) he’s worth  1.1 wins above replacement, the leader is Keuchel with a  4.6 WAR…

Tanaka gets 5.50  run support a game that’s good for 6th, only two Blue Jays, a Ranger, an Oriole, and Eovaldi get more run support then Tanaka san.. He’s also  6th in HR/9 (1.46) Sabathia, Hughes,Shoemaker, Gonzalez, Weaver have a higher rate

That’s the Bad and Ugly,

The Good: Tanaka ranks 5th in WHIP (1.03) he’s 7th in K/9 (9) , He’s 36th in FIP where he ranks in between Wade Miley  and CJ Wilson

There are only 7 pitchers with  a lower xFIP then Tanaka’s 2.99 number..

Last night Tanaka pitched a Quality Start 7 innings, 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 BB, 7 K’s,

Tanaka struck out seven in his seven innings and got eight of his other 14 outs on the ground. He generated 13 swings and misses total — including five on seven swings against his slider, which is bonkers — so four of his five highest swing-and-miss totals this season have come in his last five starts. The Seager homers obviously count, but Tanaka was pretty good aside from that.

That’s Blind Boy’s math, close enough.  Here’s the Brooks Pitch FX chart

6 of the 7 K’s came on his slider, 1 on a 4 seam fastball, none on his touted Splitter.. Tanaka threw 103-63 pitches, 40 balls out of the strike zone, that’s either by design or lack of command.. His worst inning command wise was the 2nd when he walked 2 batters and had to  slither out of a bases loaded jam, he threw 28 pitches, 14 of the 28 pitches were balls.. Luckily with no room for error, and two outs, Tanaka faced Mike Zunino who makes Brendan Ryan look like  Edgar Martinez, and he punched him out on a pitch 10 feet off the plate

Tanaka quickly  gave up  a 1-0 lead in the 3rd, when Kyler Seager smacked a 77 MPH curve ball  with  no  bite into  the right field seats. He coughed up  a 2-1 lead in the 5th after Zunino of all people singled,  and Seager blasted his 2nd HR  to  right field, 411 ft,  on a sinker that got too much plate

Tanaka retired the last 7 of 8 batters and left after 7innings with the game knotted 3-3

Hit and Runs

The Yanks despite having 9 men reach base and cashing in on a Crush Young Tater seemed to have trouble with  the Rook Montgomery.. It had to be the  9K’s, because Monty only had one 1-2-3 inning, the 6th his last.. Over all Montgomery 6 innings, 7 hits, 3 runs, 3 BB’s 9 K’s 1 HR

Young crushed a HR in the 2nd giving Tanaka a 1-0 lead.. He led off the 4th with a double and scored on a Headley single to  give Tanaka his 2nd lead of the night 2-1.. The Yanks got the first  3 batters on base ( 2 singles and a walk)  in the 5th, tying the game at 3-3 when McCann got a clutch RBI knock to  score ARod..

The Yanks were primed to  blow the game open but Young didn’t quite get good wood on a pitch and popped it up  to CF, and Headley bounced into  a DP

ARod won the game 4-3 in the 7th hitting a bomb into  the Bomber bull pen off reliever Joe Beimel,  thanks Joe…

Rob Refsynder  had a rough night at  the plate, the kid went 0-3 with a strike out.. He had a man in scoring position in the 4th  but was punched out..He grounded out to  2nd in the 2nd inning, and grounded out to SS in the 6th.. Girardi pinch hit for him in the 8th

He made a few plays on defense, one of them  got criticized but Blind Boy of RAB  doesn’t like the kid so he’s gonna find fault with him every step of the way

With two RHP’s on the bump today  and tomorrow we might not see the kid the rest of the weekend, although why not play him… Beltran is coming back soon somebody has to go might as well  continue the non  audition

Rodriguez handed the bull pen a 4-3 lead with  6 outs to  go  so Girardi’s night was over.. Betances had a 1-2-3 8th inning punching out 2 batters, Seager who gave Tanaka fits all night, and Cruz, pretty stout inning

Miller gave up  a pinch hit single but ended the night punching out Montero  to  end the damn game… Monty had a real  chance to  stick it to  his old team but Miller’s slider was much to  much  to handle, I doubt he saw any pitches like that  bat Tacoma

  1. nice win, keep loading the wagon, Yanks continue to throw down a complete team effort, Tanaka gives them 21 outs 3 runs, two clutch HR’s one clutch single, one inning where they could have blown it open but Montgomery can be tough

Pineda today, not sure where Iwakuma is at health wise but hopefully they mug him and Pineda get through 7.. I hope they play Refsynder let’s see his approach vs RHP

How is Cashman and Girardi gonna know who to ship out.. We already know what to do but they love Ryan, and Drew needs to stick based on his HR capabilities at Yankee stadium

Ref needs a few hits and clean defense here in the next few games…. RAB wants him to fail so the Yanks get a 2nd barman at the deadline… I want to see Refsynder play, if they can’t win this division carrying the kid then fuck it, let’s get younger

  2. What you like about Tanaka, he got 7 K’s 6 with the slider 1 with the 4 seam fast ball, means he has weapons incase his best pitch isn’t working… if the worst he gives you is 7 innings 3 runs, that’s pretty good right there

  3. We spoke about this last week. When Beltran & Son gets back, somebody’s got to go. Who? We know who should go. They gotta pull the trigger when that happens. I’m with you Sal, play Ruff ‘n Ready every day. Let’s see what he’s got given a legit chance. Hell, he faced RHP plenty in the minors, don’t retard his development by not playing him against them now. If you’re gonna give the kid a shot, then give him a LEGIT shot & find out if he’s ready for this gig.

  7. Robbie Cano Don’t you know lol…. I haven’t seen the game heard some of it on the radio my fear was Cano breaking out, he’s been much better since Edgar has been in the mix, today he beat the Yanks single handily

Tomorrow the King, so 50/50 they lose a series to a team 7 games under .500.. All this BS about not traveling further then Texas and 6 more home games then away games, I have this one kool aid drinking on the disqus site giving me shit about how many below .500 teams they play the 2nd half

Yanks usually play to the level of the competition…they couldn’t catch up to this bull pen Vidal Nuno really…..makes Sunday’s game fun

  8. Blind Boy had a bad day, no chest pumping for Mikey Axisa today::

The “too much rest” monster came to get Michael Pineda again. Or at least that will be the excuse. Pineda allowed four runs on six hits and two walks in six laborious innings, serving up two two-run home runs to Cano. They were both bombs – See more at:

Pineda struck out two and walked two, and only 63 of 105 pitches were strikes (60%). His season average is 69%. Big Mike faced 25 hitters, threw only 13 first pitch strikes (52%, season average is 64.3%), and also went to five three-ball counts (20%, season average is 12.3%). All five were among the final eleven batters he faced. It was a grind for Pineda, and while I’m sure pitching on extra rest is tough for a pitcher who is such a creature of habit, it’s something he has to figure out. It’s part of being a pitcher. Pineda’s lucky only Cano made him pay for his mistakes on Saturday. –

  9. Blind Boy is pining for Zobrist big time and he sounds like he might be down on Punch and Judy Ellsbury

Ellsbury has a .364 SLG. Does he finish the season at .390+?

    that’s a low blow dude
