Home is Where the Homer Is

Well old Buck Showalter didn’t go  to  sleep last night counting sheep, he went to bed counting HR’s, and reciting his favorite mantra, “It’s not about the money, it’s about the money”

You know how when  folks get old they  keep  telling you the same story over and over again, and to be polite you just  nod your head in agreement, but first  chance you get, you roll your eyes (smh)

That’s how I feel  when I hear  Buck  do  an interview with Ma Pinstripe or Baseball Boy Ed Randall, “it’s not about the money it’s about the money” put it to  bed Bucky, every team has money, your boss just  puts yours in his pocket..

The Baltimore Whiner will leave NY either 3 games worse then he was coming in, or after 2 grind em out games just 1 game lost in the standings

What he’s not doing is moving the needle, and hopefully what  the Yanks bring to the party today is a must win attitude,  this is a two game turn around, Baltimore either leaves NY 5 or 7 games out..

Either way it’s not the end of the world, it’s only the 94th  game of the season, plenty of time for injuries, streaks to  subside, players to level out, and  trades to be made.. Trades might be the toughest  thing to do, the players that look like they  can help will  cost your future, something the Yanks can’t afford

The Yanks used their first  half formula to  perfection last night, Table setters, HR’s, decent enough starting pitching, and a lights out bull pen

They  scored  in the 1st inning early, thanks to Ellsbury and Gardner setting the table with a lead off double and an RBI single as the appetizer, then polished off the main course with  a Teixeira 2 run HR, the end result 3 quick runs within the first  four batters

They once again could have blown the doors off the game when McCann singled, and Beltran walked, further complicating Kevin Gausman’s first  inning woes, but Headley and Gregorius both struck out swinging

The Yanks allowed Gausman to get into  a comfortable groove, after they  put Showalter in a position to  yank him in the first inning, and with Nova still  dancing around command issues this game got real  sticky quick…

Gausman found his rhythm,  he set 6 down in a row before Beltran led off the 5th  with  a double… The Yanks also  got a walk  from Drew in that inning, but they  couldn’t bring the RISP  around.. It was a big deal  at the time after Nova allowed a .247 hitting utility player to chop a 3 run lead down to  a 1 run lead with a 2 run HR in the 3rd.

Gausman  was rolling until ARod hit one to  the moon to give the Yanks that much needed 2 run cushion in the 6th

Shreve, Betances, and Miller made it stand up… It got dicy when Miller gave up  a Yankee Stadium HR to Davis in the 9th  but that’s as close as Baltimore got

The key to  this game was most definitely the Two HR’s by the old BOPsey Twins, ARod and Tex, but a master key was Nova pitching 6 full innings and only allowing 2 runs despite some leaky command and 3 BB’s..

Nova only gave up  3 hits but that wasn’t based on killer stuff

Called strikes-Swinging strikes-Foul balls In Play strikes: Nova 13-4-24-16;

Not many swinging strikes, a bunch of foul balls, and the O’s look like  plate coverage wasn’t in their favor with  13  called strikes.. To Nova’s credit all  3 hits off him  came in the 3rd inning, a single, a HR, and a 1 out double… He did get ground balls to escape the threat with the tying run 90 feet away

He also had command issues in the 5th  walking the first  2 batters he faced. A sac later and the O’s had 2nd and 3rd with one out… Only a great play  by Headley and Teixeira saved the lead

Nova was going batter to  batter in the 6th, but he looked like a different pitcher mowing down the heart of Baltimore’s line-up on 11 pitches

the Whole 9

the Lo Down

ESPN thinks the Yanks should go  after Aroldis Chapman

Ivan Nova looked to  be finished after 5 innings last night, his line in the box score looked a lot better then  his outing..

Just  when  you thought Joey should yank him, he tosses a 1-2-3 6th inning, which  was a major key in that  4-3 win..it allowed Shreve 7th, Betances 8th, and Miller the 9th  for a save despite Miller  giving up  a fly ball  to  right field that  dropped in the  short seats.

I was very surprised to  see Betances who  tossed 1.1 innings on Tuesday night (20 pitches).. I would have bet a portion of the farm  it was gonna be Shreve / Warren to Miller.. Betances was even better last night wiping out the O’s on 8 pitches.

As for the Yanks  at the deadline,  they’re not gonna pay the prospect price for an  elite starter, can  they  do  the next best  thing and find a 2nd baseman / RHB?

How about the 3rd best  thing, bring in another weapon like Kimbrel or Chapman?

Yeah  sure but not if ESPN is doing the deal

If I’m Cashman, I’m not trading Judge, but I’d do Severino and a lower-level prospect for Chapman. You’re the New York Freakin’ Yankees. You don’t stand pat at the trade deadline.

Guys like Severino  and Mitchell  could save the Yanks the 8 or 9 figure starting pitcher value if they pan out, which is what Cueto, Samardijia and Hamels will  cost, plus a few top  prospects.. If ESPN is saying that’s what Chapman will cost  ( Severino) then  we’ll have to  try and survive with Betances and Miller

Or maybe it depends on how Warren looks in his next few outings, in his last  1.1 innings (3 games) Warren has given up  5  hits and 2 runs, last night he wasn’t in the mix, Girardi  went full  throttle with Betances despite his 1.1 innings 20 pitch Tuesday outing

There will be no Betances tonight is my guess, will  there be a Miller? Hence lies your dilemma if you insist on running 5 to  6 inning pitchers out there night after night.. As good as this pen looks this 13 man pitching corp is far from a day  at  the beach.. The Yanks might need two  sets of weapons and that  starts with acquiring a Kimbrel or a Chapman if your gonna remain  status quo  in the rotation

Losing Records

One of the positives being thrown  around alongside how many home games and no  further travel  then Texas the Yanks have in their favor, is the amount of teams with losing records they play in the 2nd half..

Manager Joe Maddon believes folks shouldn’t be fooled by teams with losing records.

“I see these teams, and I know their record isn’t what they’re supposed to [be], but they’re good teams,” Maddon said. “[The Reds have] got a very good offensive ballclub. The White Sox, they pitch really, really well, so I know what the records look like, and I know what you’re supposed to do, but it’s not like you just throw your glove or your hat out there and you win because you have a better record than the other team does.”

I’d throw the Indians in the, they can shut you out with  elite pitching, and solid hitting  mix, the Yanks meet both  the White Sox and Indians plus Minnesota when they  go on their 10 game road trip

  1. Cashman on the radio with Evan Roberts… Sounding as stealth as ever, gonna be tough for him to pull off his deadline magic, teams are dangling big parts, but they all want a haul back for players that could make a difference..

Yanks could use a top starter but the cost is prohibitive, they don’t need but can really put a lock on games acquiring one of the elite closer types

And despite the man crush on Ryan and Drew they could use an infield/ RHB up grade, again it’s gonna cost prospects to acquire the right piece.. Good luck Cashman you might have to change up your philosophy and get all your work done in the off season, buying at the deadline has become a retail price you really don’t want to pay

  2. Cashman has been making the rounds, was on with MKay the other day, saying the same things. He is not trading the top prospects,he will do what he usually does, pick up a 2nd tier player and/or pitcher to bolster the team giving up minor prospects or picking up $$$.Forget the big names. Yanks won another close one, could have been a lot easier if they ever got a hit with risp but a win is a win.Last night was Brickhouse’s birthday- this morning Boomer/Carton played a radio clip of John saying it was her birthday,Susan saying there were some big balloons in the YES booth, then John said yes indeed!! It was funny if you have a deranged mind, which I do!! It would be great to sweep with Tanaka, but who knows what kind of lineup will be out there today for the get away day game.

    • hahaha hey Noogsie, hide the trampolines too..

Read they’re putting Aaron Sanchez in the pen, kid throws 100 MPH, maybe they’re not gonna get fleeced for Kimbrel or Chapman, that’ll help, that team with a closer and a front end starter will be dangerous

Loved the Bautista to the Mets segment yesterday with Mikey….. Poor Mikey, has what a week maybe before he takes part two of his vacation, then gets to talk football, it has to be killing him to talk baseball

He had the Met problem all figured out yesterday, once Parnell was getting whacked around Mikey was calling for Familia, as a first guess lol…..

Mikey can resurrect his career if he goes back with Mad Dog, who has gotten even crazier since he left WFAN
