Messy-Hiro Tanaka

with 43 comments

Ok we spent so much  time checking the trade deadline stuff this morning we neglected to  concentrate on the lethargic 5-2 Bomber loss

Aces or Jokers?

In a nut shell Tanaka threw a very disappointing game, not uncommon anymore since the injury, so your never shocked when you see his command go South, or his pitches have zero depth.

Of course we pretend to have an Ace not to disillusion or alarm anyone in the fan base, but nothing has changed RE: Tanaka San, he can beat anybody in the World when he’s on, unfortunately he’s turned into  a  very expensive box of ROYCE’ Chocolates, you never know which Tanaka your getting

I read where the Bats were the culprits, they  didn’t just mug the generic Colby Lewis for 15 runs so it’s on them..

Lewis is a Yankee  killer he defeated the Yankees for the third consecutive time, that’s just insane based on what  you see coming out of his hand…

This is your typical  whistling past the grave yard pundit take RE: Tanaka, unfortunately both pitchers at the top of the Bomber rotation  are vulnerable and the need to  bring in a bonafide Horse was never more prevalent after Pineda and Tanaka’s last starts.. I mean  what  2 Aces in baseball  are kissing a 4 ERA???? Tanaka 3.80 Pineda 3.97

I’d  hold off on all  that  World Series Ticket talk  for the moment, might even  want to  slow down the we need to have a better record then the Royals chatter, let’s get our feet back on the ground and try to  grind out the Division first

Four earned runs are the most allowed by Tanaka in more than a month, since Houston reached him for six on June 27. His three strikeouts are a season low and his three walks equal his season high.

Joe Girardi said the root of the problem was Tanaka’s inability to control his splitter.

Through an interpreter, Tanaka related, “It wasn’t just the splitter, but all my pitches. I didn’t have command.”

The root of the problem should be why he wasn’t able to  control his out pitch? I guess the cliche answer is, “he’s human”

When you’ve spent $175M to  acquire a pitcher you want more then  a 3.80 ERA, and you sort of want him to  shut down a team  who is basically out of it, I mean they  just  traded for Cole Hamels and the vibe is they  got him  for next year not 2015..

Silver Linings

The Silver lining was Tanaka didn’t give up  any HR’s and the Yanks found another potential young long man in Caleb Cotham!

Hey if you can’t get David Price might as well  do the next best thing, get one of his Vanderbilt Teammates..

Cotham was a 5th rounder from Vanderbilt back in 2009 and finally made it to the bigs at age 27. He’s gone through series of injuries that set him back and recently saw sustained success as a reliever

Good minor league pitcher like Diego Moreno, but let’s see both older kids  enlarge their sample size before we get too  carried away

Cothem faced 8  batters in 1.2 innings, struck out 4, his stuff looked good with  late life, and a decent slider, he would have kept the game at  4-2 but Gregorius blew a routine ground ball  that  eventually scored Texas’ 5th  run

Hit(s) and Run(s)

The Yanks gave Tanaka a 2 run lead after a Beltran  2nd inning HR, followed by 2 singles (Gregorius and Drew) and an Ellsbury RBI knock.. There you go Ace,  shut em  down

Tanaka wasted no time, he gave the lead up immediately a half inning later to take the air out of the Bomber balloon…

Beltré singled to left. 2- 0
Moreland walked, Beltré to second. 2- 0
Hamilton singled to right, Beltré scored, Moreland to third. 2- 1
Andrus struck out swinging. 2 1
Choo singled to left center, Moreland scored, Hamilton to second. 2- 2
Chirinos flied out to left. 2 2
DeShields singled to right, Hamilton scored, Choo to second. 3-2

The Yanks only picked up  4 hits from the 3rd inning on,  they only had 4 men in scoring position all night and went 1 for 4 in those situations

Lewis and 3 relievers struck out 8, walked none… So  of course the offense getting somewhat  shutdown is a built in excuse for Tanaka’s mediocre outing, per Joey Day Care he did his job

“But we ask him to keep us in the game and I thought he did that,” the manager said.

Where were guys like Girardi  when I was growing up????

Pineda gets a chance to  win the series tonight, and a series win puts this torpid performance by Tanaka and the offense in the rear view mirror

The Yanks are now a respectable 4-2 on the road trip, a 6-4 record through the South and Mid -West would be something I would have signed up  for… Of course 7-3 would be the goal, that  means they’ve won  all  3 series which  at the beginning of the week  seemed unlikely

  1. Looks like the dodgers aren’t done, that Wood trade was just the beginning per Sensie Sherman

    good article

Hamels to the Rangers for what basically amounted to what the Yanks would have to give up Sanchez and Severino.. Yanks would have needed to throw in Warren or Nova plus Williams or Flores so you can understand why Hamels wasn’t coming to the Bronx

Plus the 50% lux tax penalty would make him a $110M pitcher

The Price rental is another pipe dream, kimbrel for Mateo was also shot down by Cashman

Yanks are gonna sink or swim with Tanaka and Pineda, and they’ll hope Eovaldi and Nova can keep them in games

The pen looks stout, Severino just pitched 6 innings, struck out 10 of the 18 batters he got out, so Cashman is gonna go with the kids that works for me

I know we probably won’t see ARod or Teixeira ever this good again so I understand the want to go for it empty the system for Zobrist or Prado Price or Hamels or Kimbrel

but a combination of needing to build a core, Hal wanting to cut payroll. leaves us with what we have.. that’s fine by me I didn’t think this team would get out of 4th place so I’m playing with house money

I’d be happy with a division win and an LDS appearance…

  3. Severino’s night

maybe somebody will tell Francesa that Mateo is the other untouchable not Sanchez… Jesus even Steve Sommers knew that….

Baby steps Mikey, first we learn Severino’s name, then you call Omar and he can tell you Mateo is a stud SS, and the 4th untouchable… No need to listen to average callers… Mikey is geared up for football and Saratoga, the Yanks are way down on the bottom of his list….

    July 30, 2015 at 8:34 am

      July 30, 2015 at 11:29 am

  9. When you score 21 runs 1 night, you are not going to score a lot the next. Regardless, the fact they can’t beat Lewis is sad, everyone seems to batter him. I don’t know why the Yanks keep saying they have 2 aces-Tanaka and Pineda-when they are really just crapshoots. One game they will be unhittable, next game not. Tanaka gets by with smoke and mirrors and last night had nothing. At least he is not complaining about pain in his arm. Yanks can win the series tonight if we get the good Pineda, not the one we saw last time out. Sale is pitching for the WSox tonight,so the Yanks will not be facing him, which is real good. Incredible night on the trade front, I was watching mlb network and the Yanks at the same time. They were going nuts over the Gomez/Wheeler trade/no trade. The Mets look like fools for a change, embarrassing their manager and Flores. Just imagine the
reaction if something like that happened to the Yanks!! But of course they are run by pros so it won’t happen.
Rangers literally gave up the farm for Hamels,so you know the Yanks were never going to get him. The reaction here is mixed, the trade is basically for next year, lots of comments about the general manager being desperate to save his job, calling this trade the anti-Teixera trade. This trade period has been nuts, and will probably even get worse.

    July 30, 2015 at 10:46 am

  10. Were those tears of joy on Flores cause he thought he was getting out of Flushing Bay ?
    Poor bastard either way,,
    damn hurtful scene,,

    July 30, 2015 at 11:05 am

  11. I can’t believe Axisa is this gullible, or maybe he’s just trying to excite the Jr Gm’s that read his stuff

we have more of a chance to pitch for the Yanks then Price or Samardijia…. that dynamic is only for teams that haven’t won in a while, or never, or the Hollywood Dodgers who are playing in Ga Ga land out there with fake money

the fucking dodgers have a $100M in payroll for players that are playing with other teams… another Fruit Loops organization that never gets bashed like the Yanks used to.. Friedman coming from Tampa Bay must think he died and went to heaven with all that money to work with…

    July 30, 2015 at 11:44 am

  12. All good stuff boys. Tough game last night. After scoring 21 runs the previous night, I had a feeling the Yanks would be scratching for runs last night. That’s just the way these things work out. A team scores 10 or 11 runs one night, then the next night score 1 or 2 runs. Been watching this all my life, so I wouldn’t be too hard on the offense. On top of that, Lewis has developed into a Yankee Killer, for some reason. So it was a perfect storm. Tanaka San, will the REAL Masahiro Tanaka please stand up. Forget about all the Joey Day Care spin. The fact of the matter, is that Tanaka has not been the same pitcher we saw last year, before the injury. Case closed. I don’t want to hear that everything is ok with his elbow, he’s not hurt, he’s keeping us in games, & tonight he had no command. This is all complete bullshit! As John Vernon said in “The Outlaw Josey Wales”, “Don’t piss down my back and tell me it’s raining!” There is DEFINITELY something going on there. Whether he’s hurt, or holding back, afraid he’s going to tear it, this ain’t the guy the Yanks signed up for. They signed up for the guy who was DOMINATING until he got hurt. And Pinetop has been the little girl with a curl. You never know which guy will show up. So what do we do? I dunno. As much as I’d love to have Price, I don’t want to give up the Farm (excuse the pun) for a 2 month rental. No matter how good he is. After the 4 Untouchables, I’m willing to discuss, but that won’t be enough to get ‘re done. I’m of a mind to bring up the kid Severino, throw him out into the deep water, & let’s take our chances. This team has played better than I thought they ever would. So let’s not get held up on the stage going outta town. Maybe some lower level deals to improve, but don’t give up the farm to these bastards for a rental.

    July 30, 2015 at 12:28 pm

  13. Price going to Toronto

As Canada tries to buy a ring

    July 30, 2015 at 12:41 pm

  14. Toronto, huh? For who & how much? I still think they come up short.

    July 30, 2015 at 1:00 pm

  15. I remember every season Richard Bell telling us Toronto was a Winning Team and how you and I rediculed him,, what would he say today Sal?
    Sucks how they upgraded,
see Tulowitsky raking last night ?
Hope DoDo is watching how a real SS plays,,

    July 30, 2015 at 1:07 pm

  16. Pineda to the DL Nova banged up

Better call the parade float builders and call off the dogs

Warren to the pen, grab Leake, bring up Mitchell and in a few weeks Severino

    July 30, 2015 at 1:16 pm

    • Sorry Warren to the rotation
      Jays gave up Norris
      Their Severino

      July 30, 2015 at 1:17 pm

  17. WTF is going on here? Wasn’t Pinetop supposed to pitch tonight? What’s wrong with him??? Besides Nova’s tired arm, how is he banged up? All of a sudden we’re dropping like flys? Please advise!

    July 30, 2015 at 1:35 pm

  18. OK boys the rain hit the mountain so we’re gonna take a few minutes off and get everything cleared up

Pineda elbow, possibly most likely DL

Nova’s arm hurts so he might not be around long

Soup Bone will start tonight so there goes the series win….Plus Yanks walking into a buzz saw in chicago over the weekend, no Sale but they still have a decent staff, plus they’re hitting now and Melky will want to destroy the Yanks

here’s the intel on the Price deal… Norris is a big time prospect, Yanks weren’t gonna match that

Hamels went for what we would consider Severino Sanchez then take your pick, Warren Flores Williams
    that was never gonna happen

Now that the Yanks are desperate even middle of the rotation guys like Leake will be expensive… Cashman should have moved before this announcement…. Which Francesa leaked on WFAN… That can’t make the Yanks happy

Too bad the Met mutts have hijacked the airwaves with the Gomez debacle, because losing Pineda and Nova is a much bigger story

Heyman will be on WFAN maybe he can get a word in edge wise but the Met Mutts will dominate the discussion about Gomez… Speculation is Alderson and Wilpon wanted out on the contract, which really isn’t a lot of money Gomez is owed $9M for 2016 then he’s a free agent

Wheeler is on the DL with Tommy John, Mets hoodwinking their fan base again

Yanks in deep shit… Mitchell needs to get up here he’s got about another 75 innings in him before they shut him down

Severino already has 99 innings so he doesn’t have many innings before they shut him down

he might be better off in the pen to replace Warren, but maybe give him 3 spot starts or hopefully 18 more starter innings…

Yanks could go to San diego and try to get Ian Kennedy or pay a hefty price for Tyson Ross, I bet Sanchez is history, teams will want him for a middle of the rotation pitcher now that they know NUY is desperate

    July 30, 2015 at 2:03 pm

  19. Yovani Gallardo is another option he’s pitching tonight against the Yanks Simon, Iwakuma, also

    July 30, 2015 at 2:25 pm

  20. Pineda grade 1 strain same as Miller probably 4 to 6 weeks.. that works mid September?

    July 30, 2015 at 2:30 pm

  21. Rosenthal on the Price deal and how

    July 30, 2015 at 2:41 pm

  22. With Pinetop, this might be a blessing in disguise. What with his innings limit and all. Maybe this will put him right on track for the year. As far as the other stuff……we’s in trouble!

    July 30, 2015 at 2:41 pm

    • Yes I agree he’ll be as fresh as a daisy, like the boys when they came out of rehab, they’re good for 6 weeks to 2 months before they fall off the wagon, same with PineTop

Pine and Tanaka San are like special guest stars, they’re good for 100 to 120 innings a year, you have to build stout around them to be successful, you can’t have guys like Capuano taking up a roster spot…

Young kids can only get better, if they get worse, you jettison them back to the bushes, and try another #75, one might stick….I hope the farm system pitching staff gets a chance to get them to the playoffs….

      July 30, 2015 at 2:50 pm

So here’s are big trade Dustin Ackley
He’s s Drew that can play the out field

I hope it didn’t cost Flores
Maybe the Stripes will wake him up

    July 30, 2015 at 4:37 pm

  24. Is Cashman on the same meds that I’m taking??? WTF??? This is what they used Flores for?? Will he play 2nd? And if so, who goes? Is this supposed to be an upgrade? This was not our most salient need! We need front line pitching if they’re not gonna bring up Severino & Mitchell. I hope this is part of a spin, if not, I don’t get it!

    July 30, 2015 at 4:58 pm

    • Ackley will be NY’s Brock Holt

Kid had prospect talent might wake up hitting in a band box

You can feel it this is gonna be a tough loss
      Come on Goody 2 Shoes

      July 30, 2015 at 11:27 pm

  25. ,,, and with one swing of the bat, the score is tied,”
    K. Singleton

    July 30, 2015 at 8:34 pm

  26. That was disgusting!! We need pitching Cashman! Wake up!!!!!!

    July 30, 2015 at 8:37 pm

  27. Another very mediocre performance by Soup Bone. This from the #3 starter in the rotation. Now with Pinetop out (a month at least?), we’s in trouble. This can’t go on. Changes have to be made, in spite of the standings. That can disappear in a heartbeat. C’mon Cashman! Ya better get busy! How about we see what Severino can do???

    July 30, 2015 at 10:36 pm

    • Alright Goody Two Shoes

Every kid they bring up does ok

Took Betances too many pitches to get in rhythm

That was a typical Joey Daycare move yanking Betances
Sabathia will frustrate every outing we have to get used to it
Soon as they get a lead yank him
Should have never pitched tonight lol

      July 30, 2015 at 11:15 pm

    • Severino has maybe 50 innings before they shut him down probably wait as long as they can
Ackley will probably replace Jones is my guess not sure how good of a first baseman he is though

      Damn Bubba almost got it

      July 30, 2015 at 11:21 pm

  28. Man, I wish we had a Jimmy Key, a Pettitte, a Wells, an El Dugke, even a Rudy May….

    July 30, 2015 at 11:23 pm

  29. That means no true back-up 1st Baseman. Not good. See film of last year. Maybe Lyle Overbay wants to come back! Lol!

    July 30, 2015 at 11:26 pm

    • no room for him but he’s having a good season

      July 31, 2015 at 5:32 am

  30. Ackley had 12 career games at 1st base, none this yr

Gotta say DeShields isn’t a Mensa candidate

Hope the Dough boy is ok
Joey DC wants this game he used all his pen bullets nothing for tomorrow
    Miller can’t get loose either

    July 30, 2015 at 11:39 pm

    • You could have set your watch to that loss
Betances and Miller couldn’t bring it home mostly Miller but Betances allowed that inherited run

Why not start the inning with Miller
      Come on Joey

      July 30, 2015 at 11:43 pm

  31. Where was Beltran on that inside the park Hr

    July 30, 2015 at 11:54 pm

    • Joey laughed in the post game pressed when asked that same question. He said it didn’t matter, cuz the Doughboy was gonna get there before Beltran & Son ever would.
