CC and Ells Bury the Sox

with 11 comments

The Yanks got big games from two struggling veterans last night who combined, take down $44M of that $218M payroll the Stein-Bros dole out…

Over Paid / Overrated?

There won’t be any whining about being overpaid this morning as Sabathia and Ellsbury  returned to form helping the Bombers escape what would have been not only an embarrassing, but a costly loss in the standings.

Sabathia pitched 6 solid innigs, 3 hits, 1 run, 3 BB’s, 8 K’s, NO HR’s, and Ellsbury went 2 for 4, his 7th inning HR (#5) to  the 2nd deck in right field snapped a 1-1 tie in the Yanks 2-1 win over Boston..

Joey Claps used his 3 best short  relievers to put a bow on the series win.. Willie Wilson held serve in the 7th after Sabathia departed, and Betances and Miller made the slim 2-1 lead hold up as the Bombers remained 4.5 games up (6 in the loss column) on the surging Canadian All Stars who  come to  town  this weekend

Heading into Thursday night’s series finale with the Red Sox, the center fielder was 3-for-his-last-23 — struggling to generate the type of production he’s usually known for while hitting .196 over his previous 30 games.

As for Soup Bone

21 starts, 123 innings pitched, 146 hits, 24HR’s, ( four shy of the career-worst 28 he allowed in 2013) 1.45 WHIP, 5.34 ERA, a trip  to  the hospital  to run an IV for dehydration

Last night he kicked his attitude up  a notch, resulting in more velocity on his pitches he averaged 93 on his fast ball, but he did touch  94.7 with a 2 seamer, he dropped to  81 on his slider, and he served a steady diet of curve balls and change up’s over his 99-63 pitch  outing..

The Hi-light for Sabathia was punching out Grand Papi Ortiz with the bases loaded in the 5th inning, after Boston had tied the score 1-1 on two singles and two  walks

“After the two sliders, there’s really nowhere else to go,” Sabathia said. “I’m sure he was expecting the two-seamer too, it just kind of ran a little more than he thought. … It ran just enough to get him off of it.”

Sabathia handed the ball  to Wilson after 6 good innings, and the pen brought it home after the Doughboy lit into  a mistake slider from Rodriguez

Eddie the Cruiser

The Yanks had scouting report A on rookie Eddie Rodriguez, but credit to  Willis, Farrell,  and Rodriguez, the kid pitched backwards from his scouting report and instead of throwing 75% fast balls to  different locations, he used a lot more breaking pitches ( Sliders and Change Ups) to keep  the already baffled thanks to Stephen Wright’s knuckleball NY offense off balance

The end result was 7 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 2 BB, 5 K’s, 1 big HR, dropping his ERA to  4.17.. Rodriguez went from 75% fastball  execution to  50% resulting in a lot of weak  contact until  finally   one of his sliders found the barrel of Ellsbury’s bat in the 7th

The home run came on a slider. While Brett Gardner said he saw a lot of fastballs from Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez, Ellsbury said he got a lot of breaking pitches. “I told myself to sit fastball, just be ready for the fastball and react offspeed,” Ellsbury said. “I got an offspeed pitch and fortunately hit it well.”

Hopefully this AB jump starts Ellsbury, the Yanks really do need Gardner and Ellsbury to pick it back up to  what  they  were doing before Ellsbury’s injury.. While the two  top of the order guys have struggled recently the Bottom Third has picked up  the slack but that  shelf life is bound to  expire

Bullies Again

Wilson 1 inning, 1 hit, 3 K’s, Betances 1 inning, 1 hit, 1 K, Miller 1 inning, 1 hit, 1 BB, 1 K

  1. Yanks hurlers held Boston to 6 runs in the 3 games.. the Nation will tell you that’s more to do with Boston’s offense continuing their putrid results

they were without Pedroia and Betts, not exactly Mantle and Maris, but both top of order players would have no doubt contributed to lengthening the line-up

Hanigan, Rutledge, and Bradley plus pinch hitter Shaw picked up 4 of the 6 hits, actually Rutledge picked up nothing.. All three players were the bottom third
Castillo and the Cafeteria Lady picked up the other 2 singles

That’s not your father’s Red Sox, 6 seeing eye knocks

the Jays have an Achilles Heel their pen, but they have been mashing, that mashing can’t sustain and they’re finally on the road

they went 8-2 on their recent 10 game home stand where they scored 59 runs and gave up 33

they’re 8-1 with Tulowitski in the line up

  2. After winning, what? 5 in a row & mashing, this would be a good time for the Jays to come back to Earth. Yanks need to get the pitch counts up this weekend & get into the Jays pen early & often. This promises to be a very interesting weekend.

    • Dickey scares the hell out of me mB.. another circus side show and Joey Claps still thinks he’s Earl Weaver

Gardner sacrificing took the bat out of Arod’s hands last night but Tex missed a fastball down the middle or he wrecks the game with the bases loaded

We needed to belt that kid around, now Boston thinks they have a stud in Rodriguez… If our guys pitch good it’s because their offense sucks, if their kid pitches good it’s because he’s a stud, not that our Offense was off

you see how they are those some bitches lol…

  3. http://riveraveblues.com/2015/08/thoughts-following-luis-severinos-debut-125636/

Blind Boy Axisa puts his knee pads on when Keith Law walks in the room and Law touted Severino nothing but a relief pitcher, starting he’s all arm and no bottom half.. Me i keep the kid I’m sick and tired of watching Ace types pitch like #4’s the last few yr’s of their contracts… If Hal was more like the dodgers and money isn’t the issue OK then never get younger and just buy everybody, but I’m shocked Axisa doesn’t get the need to get younger

    Axisa:

    5. I still wish the Yankees would have traded for a starter at the deadline and yes, I still would have traded Severino for David Price or Cole Hamels. Give me the no-doubt ace. The last two months of a postseason race are not exactly the ideal time to break in a rookie starter, at least not to me. Don’t get me wrong, Severino looked very good and I’m excited to see him again on Tuesday. But, for the purposes of winning the division and making a deep run in October, another starter sure would have helped. This rotation is basically the bare minimum for contention.

  4. I wish the Yankees sign Harper fuck trading for a starter, they can buy a starter in free agency, without giving up prospects and why would you trade Severino for a Price rental

and did anybody see Hamels last start in the AL

In a 9-7 loss against the Giants, Hamels delivered a workman-like 7 2/3 innings, allowing five earned runs and striking out six. He was efficient, and he was good. He left the game in line for the win before the Rangers’ bullpen blew the lead.

And that’s still pitching vs an NL team… Hamels is good, but not $23M a yr good plus 4 top prospects sorry

    • Ma-use-less should stick to horse racing and rooting for his Redskins because like his idol Francesa he’s lost
      When it comes to baseball
It’s not his fault to be a traffic cop on a diverse sports talk show you have to spend a lot of time being a jack of all trades
Again I understand they need to include callers, it’s like karaoke for singers, its the callers 15 minutes and for that reason they draw a crowd, but I wish they would just be talk show hosts and get guys who do specific sports for a living to give their takes

That SNY show these guys do must be unwatchable

  6. Beltran is an Albatross hanging around this Team’s neck.
I could care less about his occasional Dinger,, he is a waste.
Led foot lackadaisical fielder, plays like he could care less,, not invested at all.
