The Yanks Knuckle Under

There were a ton of sarcastic quips coming from the Bomber peanut gallery ( Blind Boys of RAB) after the Yanks lost game one, 2-1 in 10  innings to  the Jays in this important 3 game series

Any time you can let the dude who’s been on the AAA shuttle all year face Donaldson and Bautista in extras, you have to do it.

Where else’s are you going after Betances 1.1 innings, Wilson  and Miller, (Toronto  eats LHP’s alive) Warren  and Mitchell  are spot starters

Glad we get to see one last Drew at-bat too.

Ref and Pirela had their chances, Zobrist cost you a lot to rent, and Cano lives 3000 miles away in a $240M kingdom, get over it and let’s move on

No second inning for Miller, huh. Not even just to face Donaldson and Bautista?

These guys murder LHP, and Miller has been a bit shaky since his DL stint, no  guarantees there in a tie game

The two best offenses in baseball played ten innings and they scored three runs total on cheap wall-scraping Yankee Stadium solo homers.

Wall  scraping HR’s?  81 of the 147 HR’s the Yanks have hit have been at  home, I guess that’s why they  continue to  swing for the fences even against knuckleballers who throw Butterflies, and we all know thanks to Mr Girardi’s Neighborhood Science Fair, unlike NFL football players wives, Butterflies are tough to  hit

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me but when you score 90  runs in 10 games, then you score a measly  4 runs in 3  consecutive games but the media waxes poetic how prodigious the offense is based on your total numbers but not how the numbers were accumulated, that’s called a skewed stat in my trailer hood

The Bombers are a HR hitting machine, they’ll bully mediocre pitching, they’ve taken advantage of pitchers having bad days and hang crooked numbers on those guys in bunches, (unfortunately it only counts as 1 win) they’ve also bested their fair share of Aces (everybody has an off day).

Unfortunately a terrific stat  you won’t find at Fangraphs, home of the baseball  geek squad, the Yanks have compiled an inordinate amount of Hat Tipping metrics or  (wHT+) toward plus 4 ERA hurlers and Rookies..

The hands down end all death grip on their offensive game is the dreaded Knuckle ball, it really does create the feeling of butterflies in the pit of your stomach to  watch  this phenomenon go down

The Yanks in the last 3 days have faced 2 knuckle ball pitchers with plus 4 ERA’s against  everybody else in baseball, but the totals vs NY are 15 innings, 2 runs, 10 hits, 12 K’s, 2 losses.. They  did have a total of 4 innings vs conventional relievers in those games, 4 innings, 3 hits, no  runs, so  there was a smallish  window to  climb out of their hole but they  fell  short.. Had to be the residual affect of the knuckleball, it takes a week to  10 days to get out of your system I guess

How About Scratching That Itch Once in a While

The Bronx Bombers never just manufacture or scratch out runs anymore, despite them having one exceptionally astute base stealer and one fast runner who can out run a throw but unfortunately  has zero clue on the art of reading a pitchers move at the top  of their line-up,  it’s been over a month  since they’ve actually stollen a base

For some reason their esteemed leader Joey Claps has instilled a philosophy that We Are A HR hitting Team God Damit and we don’t want to take the bat  out of Alex and Tex’s hands

How about  trying to grab the feel of a game Joey instead of dictating your next  move based on a computer read out.. The Yanks are playing .565 baseball  that’s 14 games over .500, they have hit 147 HR’s so  we get the you dance with who brung you concept, but shouldn’t great  teams be a tad more diverse?

You have the weapons to  be a well  rounded squad, unlike the Jays…. If your trying to sneak in the back door but you don’t want to  wake up  the enemy, isn’t it wiser to pick the lock and slither in then to pull out your Bazooka and blow the fucking door down?

Alex Rodriguez has had a phenomenal season but “let’s be honest” he runs the bases like he’s carrying Jorge Posada, Tony Bosch and Cousin Yuri, he’s 4 for his last 19, so  we’re not talking Mike Trout here.. And if they  walk him you have Teixeira with 30 HR’s and a .940 OPS, followed by McCann who has a .323 / .387 / .591 / .979 with RISP

With the game tied in the eighth, for example, Brett Gardner singled to lead off the inning. It seemed like a perfect time to steal a base to try to put a runner in scoring position and stay out of a double play.

However, Girardi pointed out that Gardner did not go because LaTroy Hawkins is very quick to the plate and Russell Martin is throwing out four of every 10 runners who try to steal. Alex Rodriguez proceeded to hit into a double play.

LaTroy Hawkins, 42 yr old LaTroy  friggin Hawkins, so instead of feeling the game’s pulse Girardi  looks East toward his Binder to make his decision.. OK so  we’ll  give Joey the benefit of the doubt on Old LaTroy’s epic move, and Martin’s 40% caught stealing stat

But what  about

The Yanks have faced  15 innings of knuckleballers and not once in the 8 conventional hits did they  try to swipe a base in an effort to get a runner into scoring position.. Sans Gregorius they  all look like they’re trying to  hit the ball into next week off the gimmick pitch

“It’s like hitting a butterfly,’’ manager Joe Girardi said after R.A. Dickey dominated the Yankees with a floating knuckler to help extend the sizzling Blue Jays’ winning streak to six games and pull them within 3 ½ lengths of the first-place Yankees in the AL East. “I thought we had better swings [on Friday] than [Wednesday]. We just weren’t able to score any runs.’’

Butterflys are getting extinct and hopefully so  are knuckleballers, if you want to  catch  a butterfly maybe try being a bit more stealth in your approach, abandon the caveman  routine in certain situations.. I know Joey, I know, there iisn’t stat in your Binder that  tells you when to  and when not to  make that  decision

It’s too  early to panic, I guess, the Yanks have a 5 game lead in the loss column, although the countdown started at  8 games, it’s now 3.5 since the Jays went all  Rogue Nation and brought in Tulowitski, Price, Revere and Lowe.. The Canadian All Stars  weren’t at home last night so lets shelve that disclaimer for the moment.. The Yanks are 2-2 at home since the  6-4 road trip so that  big time home court advantage hasn’t quite been paying attention to Joey Spins when he tries to  pull the sweater over the head of  Brickhouse and the Girls of Summer

“We know what our offense can do,” said Jose Bautista, whose solo homer off the Yankees’ Branden Pinder in the 10th made the difference. “We’ve got David Price going [Saturday]. I don’t think they’re feeling good right now.”

Take it easy hot shot, last time  David Suitcase Price faced the Yanks he  was wearing Detroit laundry and went 2.1 innings, gave up  10 hits, 8  runs, 3 BB’s

It’s facing the circus freaks that keep NY not feeling good right now

PINder the Tale on the Donkey

As for Girardi  sticking with Pinder, I had zero problem with that move, I like the Baby Bombers, I want to  see them in certain high leverage situations.. All of a sudden now Adam Warren is Aroldis Chapman?? Warren wasn’t even available, Betances pitched 1.1, Miller slipped in and out of 1 inning giving up  a hit while pitching to  contact for 4 batters

If there was a strange move it was yanking Wilson (0.1 inning) after he blew away Revere, but I guess with Tulo  and Donaldson coming up, a man in scoring position with  1 out you need to  go  to Betances, so  the  bull pen sequence is what it is

Score some runs boys  that’s LaTroy Hawkins, Brett Cecil and a 20 yr old closer Osuna getting 9 outs not Smoltz, Maddux and Glavine

Silver Lining Playbook

The Bombers got a brilliant outing from Eovaldi who  peeled himself off the mat after a rough 1st inning and held the Jays in check for 6.1 innings… That’s actually a tad over league average, but he did leave a mess to  clean  up, though no  fault of his own, The Canadian All Stars  put 2 men on base on balls that never left the infield

Teixeira hit a tape reviewed HR, his 30th in the 2nd inning for the Yanks only run

You hate to  see them lose a game that involves the bull pens, but the Jays have righted the ship in their pen since the All Star  break

In the first half their relievers had a 3.62 ERA, in the 2nd half they’re at 1.83, with a sick 0.695 WHIP

This ain’t your Fathers Blue Jays boys, Rogers Communications’ deep pockets have built themselves a pretty good team

  1. bad loss, Girardi has turned this team into cave men, despite speed at the top, way to predictable

Still a chance to break Toronto’s balls just take the next two, unless the offense is circling the drain here for a spell

When do we start to get sick of hearing what a big lead we have?

  2. I heard a comment on a recent broadcast that Gardner hasn’t attempted to steal a base in approximately 2 months. Wondering if there is a concerted attempt to keep this speed burner full of gas in the tank. He wears down every year and his August and September numbers are usually brutal as compared to the first 4 months.
I also don’t like the wall scrapper home run comments. Kay was on that point, too. Christ, it’s your park, it was built and designed to have the advantage. Good hitting righties who can go the other way, like Donaldson, are always going to be scary at bats.
They don’t win often when the top of the order doesn’t produce.

    • Hey Noogsie good point on conserving energy you’re right Babe does run down
I also heard Joey Claps continue to say they are a hr hitting team and he doesn’t want to take the bat out of the two big Gumbies hands

Ellsbury doesn’t run either anymore maybe the knee is banged up
I also hear the weather is warmer so it’s easier to throw guys out I shoul check to see how many bases Ricky or Maury stole in July and August
I’m not saying they hit too many hrs but once in a while especially when butterflies are in abundance lets change the game plan
Even O’NEILL took a break from his Oliver North war stories to express concern about running more in the Boston series
Just split the the 6 game series between here and Canada
I wish Francesa didn’t put a fork in Toronto
      Good stuff bud

  3. Mauseless ran callers off the air yesterday who dared to say the Zyxnkd were in trouble
1 loss to Toronto and he changes his tune now it’s the Jays out pitched the Yankees omg now we have concern

    • Yankees not what ever the phone wrote lol

  4. No sooner did Mkay say Nova looking for a 1,2,3 inning,he gives up a hit!! JUST STFU AND CALL THE GAME!!! He always does this,is fucking annoying. Pinder should not have been in there to lose the game,
it just shows the Yanks need an experienced righty reliever besides Betances. The parade of righty stiff relievers that they continually bring up and send down are not major league ready, especially in a pennant race. There is no excuse for it. There also is no excuse for the pathetic Yankee offense. Why they have stopped running is a mystery-they were leading the league in stolen bases early in the season with Ellsbury and Gardner. Now,not. I think everyone, especially the media, needs to chill out,its a series in early August, not the playoffs!!! They lead by 5 games in the loss column!! At some point in time, the O’s,Rays,
Jays all were in first place. There is a long way to go,we should just enjoy being in a pennant race after the last 2 seasons.

    • Hey big D yes it is fun being in a race after all I was thinking 4th place this winter
Maybe Cashman can pick up a RHP
Somebody owed a lot of money might fall in their laps its a matter of Hal wanting to pay them

Good time to see if these kids can do the job like you said its August

      August 8, 2015 at 2:08 pm

  5. On the radio side
too bad the offense has gone in the shitter because Nova is dealing the 2nd time around the lineup

That dinky single in the 2nd cost him pitches

Same as last night lotta pitches in the first inning but second time around much better

    August 8, 2015 at 2:02 pm

    • Wow Price is pitching great somebody is gonna make the mistake and give him $200m

Nice to hear Beltran and Arod just going with pitches for hits
      Up to Headley

      August 8, 2015 at 2:26 pm

  6. Well that didn’t pan out lol

    Good thing it’s only August

Now we know why Price will get $200m and Nova won’t

Warren hopefully was only in for 2 batters no sense wasting him Yanks will be lucky to get 4 hits no less 4 runs

The score when Warren has entered his last five games.

    NYY down 4
    up 14
    up 10
    down 2
    down 4

    What a waste.

  8. There was controversy over whether or not GeniusJoe left Nova in too long-he did-but if you can’t score any runs it doesn’t matter. Yanks could do nothing vs Price,I guess some thought he would get bombed again, but it wasn’t snowing today. Then when the Yanks had 2 on,Ryan was the batter!! Naturally he popped out in the infield. The media asked GJ about using JR Murphy as the only other righty on the bench, but the real problem is the weak bench.Ryan would never be in a platoon on any other team, especially with Drew!! The Yanks had scored 90 runs in 10 games,YES showed the difference since then=batted .398 with risp, now 0-12 before today. Yanks just need to break out of their funk at the plate, hopefully will do it Sunday behind Tanaka.
