Yanks Start the Atlanta Campaign

with 8 comments

There hasn’t been this large a contingency of Yankees storming through Georgia since General  Billy  Sherman ravished Atlanta back in 1864 ( yes when the talented and tasty Miss Ricardi talked in history class I paid attention)

The Yankee offense finally ran into  4 pitchers they  could abuse, Atlanta had 6 of them  take the mound, 2  middle relievers escaped with a combined 3 scoreless innings, but the 4 bookends coughed up  15 runs and the Yanks finally won a game, finally scored more then 1 or 2 runs in 9 innings and kept pace with  the Division leaders (Team Canada) and at the moment  the Wild Card chasers ( Texas / Minnesota)

All  3 teams won their games so Canada stayed 1.5 up on the Yanks and Texas 4 back in the WC, the Twins remained 4.5 behind the Bombers.. The Yanks are 5 up in the loss column on Texes and 6 on Minnesota

With ARod on the pines and Tex walking around like Walter Brennan, the Yanks need to  find some other players to pick up  the offense.. Last night with the help of Williams Perez, ( never trust  a guy  with  2 last names) Detwiler, McKirahan, and Gomes the Boys broke out of their doldrums, shoulda just  put Washington Generals on the front of Atlanta’s laundry

It was a bookend kind of night, they  scored 9  runs in the first  2 innings, and 6 runs in the last 2, a nice 15 to 4 Win…

Now lets see if they  can  sweep  the woeful Braves and head to Boston  on a 3 game winning streak.. The Red Sox mugged Met relief pitching after Matt Harvey put them in a coma for 6 innings… Lets hope the Mets clinch before September 18 /19 and 20, we don’t want to see Harvey, or deGrom in that  series and Alderson has given Collins strict orders to limit their usage

The NY media had just penciled in 3 Wins for the Mets vs Boston, I don’t think  they  have the pulse of that Boston  team.. Those guys are all  auditioning for Dave Dombrowski, it’s been a different Boston  team  since the shake up, and they’ll be chomping at  the bit to  spoil NY’s season

Hit(s) and Run(s)

Both  1st  and 2nd inning  rallies started with 2 outs

First Inning

Ellsbury flied out to center. 0 0
Gardner lined out to shortstop. 0 0
Beltrán singled to center. 0 0
McCann walked, Beltrán to second. 0 0
Bird walked, Beltrán to third, McCann to second. 0 0
Headley hit a ground rule double to deep left center, Beltrán and McCann scored, Bird to third. 2 0
Gregorius homered to right (405 feet), Bird and Headley scored. 5 0
Drew struck out looking.

Key AB here was Headley’s humongous clutch  hit

2nd Inning

Tanaka grounded out to second. 5 2
Ellsbury struck out swinging. 5 2
Gardner singled to center. 5 2
Beltrán singled to right, Gardner to second. 5 2
McCann walked, Gardner to third, Beltrán to second. 5 2
Detwiler relieved Pérez. 5 2
Bird walked, Gardner scored, Beltrán to third, McCann to second. 6 2
Headley walked, Beltrán scored, McCann to third, Bird to second. 7 2
Gregorius singled to left, McCann and Bird scored, Headley to third, Gregorius to second advancing on throw. 9 2
Drew intentionally walked. 9 2
Tanaka struck out swinging.

Key AB pretty much a team  effort, but the Gregorius knock plated 2 runs with  1 swing

8th Inning Garbage Time

McKirahan relieved Marimon. 9 3
Ellsbury singled to left. 9 3
Gardner grounded into fielder’s choice to shortstop, Ellsbury out at second. 9 3
Beltrán doubled to deep right, Gardner to third. 9 3
McCann homered to right (372 feet), Gardner and Beltrán scored. 12 3
Bird grounded out to shortstop. 12 3
Headley hit a ground rule double to deep right. 12 3
Gregorius singled to center, Headley scored. 13 3
Drew struck out looking.

Key AB : Beltran  stood McKirahan up,  and Bubba McCann  dropped him

9th Inning More Garbage Time Time

Gomes relieved McKirahan. 13 3
Young homered to left (401 feet). 14 3
Murphy doubled to left. 14 3
Gardner doubled to deep center, Murphy to third. 14 3
Ryan hit for Beltrán. 14 3
Ryan flied out to center. 14 3
McCann hit sacrifice fly to left, Murphy scored. 15 3
Mitchell struck out looking.

Key AB: good to  see Young get off the snide, always fun to  see Murphy get a hit, and, Babe Gardner needs whatever he can get to spark him for the last 5 weeks

Tanaka bounce Back

Tanaka looked more like Dice K in the first inning, he was terrible working with  a 5 run lead..

Markakis singled to right. 5 0
Maybin walked, Markakis to second. 5 0
Freeman singled to right, Markakis scored, Maybin to third. 5 1
Swisher hit sacrifice fly to center, Maybin scored. 5 2
García singled to left, Freeman to second. 5 2
Peterson flied out to center, Freeman to third. 5 2
Bethancourt flied out to center.

Ellsbury saved his bacon with a great  catch or he gives back 4 of the 5 runs his offense got him

He fell behind Simmons in the 2nd inning then  something clicked and he punched out the side.. Outside of a Freeman HR in the 3rd, Tanaka did what he’s getting paid to  do, shut down the opposition… You might hear the word Ace thrown around this morning, but let’s see Tanaka shut down Boston on Wednesday and Baltimore the following Tuesday  before we anoint him the Ace again

TJ Tanaka is the quintessential  Blind Date, you never know what  your gonna see until  they  show up

Anyway, a  workman like performance, and a  good job, 7 innings, 5 hits, 3 runs, 1 BB, 7 K’s, 1 HR 3.62 ERA

He could have  imploded in the 1st inning and added 10 yr’s to Joey Claps and Larry the Stable Guys life clock, but Ellsbury made a $21M catch in CF

Tonight  Severino (1-2) vs Wisler (5-4)

No excuses boys gotta put a W on the board, they need Gregorius and Headley to lengthen the line-up behind Beltran  and McCann, and Bird to have good AB’s, the kid did a nice job passing the baton last night.. Ellsbury and Gardner have No margin for error it’s imperative they  start  their 5 week  run  after taking a month off

  2. I don’t care who was pitching last night, Greg Maddox, Johnny Gomes, or Lew Burdette, the Yanks needed to win & score some runs in the worst way! This offense needs to get confidence from somewhere, and I’ll take it from anywhere. Even from Gomes. Now we need to put the pedal to the metal. Looking for the kid to continue & pitch a good game tonight, & the Yankee bats to (as Singleton says) keep the line moving. The only disappointing thing last night was seeing Brickhouse in that form hugging bright red dress on, wearing a freakin sweater in that Hot ‘Lanta heat covering up the girls, who were dying to get out! An Infamita!

  7. Big win to keep pace with Team Canada who just can’t lose. They didn’t exactly mash the ball tonight……but I’ll take it! Jays won 15-1 over the fading Tigers. I still think their urine should be checked. It’s getting ridiculous!!
