Based on Team ERA the Rays are the best pitching staff in the AL East and the 3rd best in the AL behind Houston  and KC. The Yanks are 4th out of 5 teams in the AL East  and 9th out of 15 in the AL, so this 3  game series is gonna be a lot tougher then  the 5-1 road trip / walk in the park the Bombers just encountered playing Atlanta and Boston

Despite sporting a losing record to  the Yanks, (0-3) and the worst  run support of any starter in the AL, Rays starter Jake Odorizzi is a handful. The dude sits 92 with his 4 seam, 91 with his 2 seam, he subtracts 20 MPH with his curve, 10 MPH with his slider, and he has a split.. Over all he gave up  4 hits, 18 swings and misses mostly from the 4 seamer and the split, and 8 strike outs…

Sounds like a long night in  the Bronx for our heroes, no?

There is a disclaimer on his 6.2 innings, 3 hits, 8 K’s 2 BB’s outing, he  gave up  3 HR’s and 5 Runs, and Yankee Rookie sensation Louie Severino  didn’t, as the Yanks finally picked up  a game on Team Canada with a 5-2 win over the pain in the neck Rays

Yes unfortunately for Ordorizzi one of the 7 cutters he threw at the Yanks never did cut, and instead of the 83 MPH cut fastball moving away  from, it stayed in, ARod’s Sweet spot and the Old Bomber poked it into  the left field seats for a 2 run Tater that gave the Yanks a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning..

The misfortune for Ordorizzi started when  he walked his personal nemesis Bubba McCann right before the ARod Tater and the Yanks jumped to the crooked number lead 5 batters into  the game..

It’s a good thing he helped to  speed ARod’s bat  up because the next  3 batters  were all punched out with  relative ease.

Five batters later in the 4th inning Bubba McCann who practically owns Odorizzi ( 11 for 17 with seven extra-base hits against Odorizzi, including three home runs.) Hit a Ballantine Blast into  the Right Field bleachers on a 3-2 fastball that  kissed the outer half.. It was only the 2nd HR by a LHB off Odorizzi all yr and it gave the Bombers a 3-0 lead.

Nine batters later  in the 7th inning with the Yanks up  3-1, Odorizzi walked McCann, struck out ARod, then on his 108th pitch he left an 84 MPH splitter up and Greg Bird put it in the 2nd deck in right field…

Bird as a 22 yr old kid who  was born in Memphis raised in Denver might have the smoothest  sweetest swing on the roster, and the ball just  jumped off his bat. The Tater left the bat  at 108 MPH, traveled 400 feet, gave the Yanks a 5-1 lead, and for the first  time all night you felt like this game was in the bag…

Three hits, 5 runs, 5 pitches later Odorizzi punched out Headley and after 113 pitches and a hell of a pitched game he left with a 4 run deficit….go  figure

Yankee Phenomenal

Louie Severino  continued to impress with yet another stellar Rookie performance, 6.1 innings, 7 hits, 1 run, 3 BB’s, 5 K’s, 1 HR,  2.04 ERA

Too many hits, too many walks, too many RISP?

Maybe, but what  you like about Severino, he was never out of an inning despite the Rays putting runners in scoring position in four of Severino’s  6.1 innings.. The kid reminds you of a boxer who gets hit, but keeps on coming, it’s almost like, ok you got a knock,  but my stuff is so  good I’m gonna get the next  guy and stop  the bleeding right now…

While the egg head dip  shits at ESPN and RAB keep  waiting for the “he’s more of a reliever then a starter” Rookie to prove them  right, he continues making them look like wanna be Bird Dogs, speaking of Dogs that  won’t hunt, Keith Law  and Mike Axisa lead that pack

Severino gave up  a double in the 1st inning but with a man on 3rd he got Jaso on a 5-3 ground-out.. In the 2nd he coughed up  2 singles and a walk, but a caught stealing and a Arencibia punch out kept the Rays off the board

A 1-2-3 third, a single and a walk kept Tampa knocking on the door, but a 6-3 ground out ended the 4th. A 1-2-3  Fifth inning preceded a lead off  Longoria HR in the 6th, his only blemish.. He also  walked a batter and gave up  an infield single before Kiermaier struck out swinging, 3 pitches, the punch out came on 96 high  heat to keep  the game at  3-1

After a 5-3 Ground out to  start  the 7th inning,  Sizemore reached on an infield knock and Joey Claps made a 2 clap  pitching change to  end the Kid’s night at 91 pitches… I guess Joey didn’t want the young man to falter while swimming in unchartered territory, it was his first 7th inning adventure so Wilson  came in to  close out the inning with an F/9  and an F/8

Warren pitched with a 5-1 lead in the 8th, getting a nice 1-2-3 inning, but a one out single and an RBI double ended his 1.1 inning relief appearance in the 9th

Miller came in to wipe out the next 2 batters for his 30th  save

Yanks face Lefty Matt Moore today, with Eovaldi looking to  rebound from a lethargic 5 inning,  8 hit, 5 run outing vs the lowly Braves, where the Yanks scored 20  runs to gift wrap his 14th  win

I’m wondering if Girardi  finally puts Refsynder in a game vs the Lefty, or will Joey big Fly  continue to  reinforce the fact his team  is a HR hitting squad, and maybe Drew gets the nod in hopes he puts # 18 into  the right field seats

Ellsbury once again needed to be yanked from a game, this time he had flu symptoms.. The Doughboy continues to  be a huge disappointment @ $21M per yr, and 5 more yr’s on the books.. At a time when the Bombers could use his services he’s nursing a sick  stomach and a banged up hip, plus he’s 0 for September and now questionable for today’s game

Yanks could use an LA Dodger / Boston  Red Sox type  Sting to  dump  this albatross on

the Whole 9

  1. Hell of a game by Severino, you always waiting for the next show to drop but it doesn’t… This whole team is an enigma, good luck trying to figure it out

The O’s finally got hot, Yanks could use some help, but we don’t want them to go on a run, they come in next, maybe they’ll punch themselves out in Toronto

  2. I had a great view of the kid last night, being 11 rows behind home plate. This kid is something else. Throws nice an easy gas. Effortless! He looks like he’s going to be special. That fighter you referred to earlier has to be Smokin Joe Frazier! He always kept comin on.

  3. yeah mB… glad you had a good time… Severino is the anti Eovaldi who looks like he’s in full chump mode already today… Yanks played that first inning like they have a 4 pm dinner date

  4. Yanks need our good luck charm Moscone there today, things not looking good. Ryan playing instead of Refsnyder or Pirela, our manager is just a stubborn jerkoff. You look at the Rays lineup and you wonder how they ever score-but when you walk a lot of batters, hit a batter then give up a single, you find yourself in the toilet. Yanks always have problems hitting the Rays pitchers,no batter how bad their numbers are.

  5. This will tell you what kind of knuckle for a head I am. Today, I listened to the game, unfortunately, on the radio driving down from Woodstock. A great win! So, what an I doing now ? Watching a reply of the game. Nuts, huh? Now, all I need is a couple of hookers and….
