The Price Of A Champion

The Price of A Champion

The Yanks are now 3.5 games behind Team Canada with  13 left to play so  the AL Division is circling the drain after David Price dominated the Bombers with a 7 innings, 2 hits, no  runs, 1 BB, 7 K’s.. in a 4-2 win

Desperate for a play off run, in the off season Team Canada emptied their farm  system in pursuit of Josh Donaldson the probable league MVP,  at the deadline they  traded for probable AL Cy Young winner David Price, they flipped the enigmatic Jose Reyes and took on Troy Tulowitzki’s injury prone contract, traded for lead off expert Punch And Judy hitter Ben Revere, reliever Mark Lowe, added throw in LaTroy Hawkins, and beefed up  their role players by grabbing Cliff Pennington and  Darwin Barney

The first piece to  their Play off / Championship  Dreams, prior  to  trading for Donaldson was inking former Bomber catcher Russell Martin to  a McCann-ish  type 5 yr $82M contract… The debilitating Martin money won’t start  to  cripple Team Canada until 2017, 2018 and 2019, that’s  when Rogers Communications will owe Martin who  will be 34, $60M until he’s a 36 yr old backstop

That  contract won’t look pretty, and  neither will  the opening Price leaves when he bolts Canada for a $200M free agency deal somewhere in the USA, like Chicago or LA…My guess Tulowitzki will  spend almost as much time on the DL as dressed in Blue Jay laundry

But

35 yr old GM Alex Anthopoulos failed to make any noise after trying to  buy a pennant in 2013 by taking back Florida Marlins mercenaries, so with his job on the line, Trader Greek pulled the trigger once again, further depleting the Toronto  farm  system, but this time it’s paying off big time

Basically what Anthopoulos did was channel George Steinbrenner, to hell  with prospects lets get the tried and true veterans and win this thing… Forty six thousand strong all  dressed in Blue acting like it’s an Olympic Hockey final makes Trader Greek front runner for GM of the year, and the cash registers making loud Ka-Ching sounds as a reminder it takes money to make money

No doubt this euphoria Canada is presently experiencing  could very well be  be short lived despite Donaldson, Encarnacion, Bautista, Martin, Tulowitzki , and Revere sticking around, because the straw stirring this Canadian Club is David Price.. Donaldson is a huge component but Price is 2015’s Mad Bum, he’s the difference maker

Since crossing the border as a gun for hire Price is  now 8-1 in 10 starts  with a 1.95 ERA, 81 strikeouts, 17 walks in 69.3 innings. He’s faced the Bombers 4 times in the last 54 days. He is 3-0 with a 1.71 ERA after seven shutout innings Monday.

He’s cut his ERA from 2.53 with Detroit to that 1.95 mark with Toronto. His batting average allowed his dropped from .241 to .200, his strikeout rate has increased from 23.3 percent to 29.6 percent, while his home run rate has also dropped, with just three in his 69 1/3 innings with the Jays. That’s what I mean when saying he’s throwing the best baseball of his life.

The Don of Oakland

Anyway Cashman like Cherington in Boston gave  Billy Beane a call on Josh Donaldson when word hit the bricks the All Star  3rd baseman  and the Money Ball GM weren’t seeing eye to  eye.. A simple no was enough to chase Cashman  and Cherington away…Unfortunately Anthopoulos wouldn’t go so  quietly in the night and he finally cut a deal that might be the worst trade Beane has ever made, and he’s made some clunkers, and a deal  that  saved Alex the Greek his gig

Boston is now stuck with Fenway Fats and his $95M 5 yr deal, and Cashman is stuck  with  3 more yr’s @13M per with Chase Headley who makes Chuck Knoblauch look like Mo Rivera when it comes to  throwing a baseball

Donaldson is inked under team  control for 3 more yr’s and is presently making $4.3M… If your Cashman  you do what it takes to get Donaldson, you trade Judge you trade Mateo  you trade Sanchez you trade anybody but Severino  and Bird.. On paper it looks like Beane needed to  acquire a 3rd baseman to  replace Donaldson, but my guess he could have found something as good a Brett Lawrie and his .268 BA and .304 OBP,  if he got a decent prospect package back

Once Aaron Judge jumped up in competition ( AAA) in 61 games his slash line doesn’t jump off the page at  you

.224  .308 .373 .680, 8 HR’s, 70 Strike outs in 250 AB’s that’s a 28% strike out rate

Judge is still  young, hasn’t played pro ball  that long and might be a good maybe  great player some day, or he could be another Jesus Montero… At the time of the Donaldson trade Judge was an untouchable based on his decent single and double A stats, a sell high scenario  was definitely up  for discussion

Adam and Leave

As for the lopsided mismatch in game one, Adam Warren  a nice young man  with a good education from North Carolina was no match  for the soon to be AL Cy Young winner

Warren at best  a back of the rotation starter threw 81 pitches and was gone after 3.1 innings, like his North Carolina teammate Matt Harvey, Warren is on an innings limit, but unlike his former college buddy, Warren is no Dark Knight

The Jays did all their damage in the first inning, when they scored three runs on three hits along with a hit batter and a walk. Warren put up zeroes from that point on, but unfortunately he was a deer in the headlights once the bell  rang giving Price a 3 run handicap ..

“I was trying to make the best pitch in the world instead of trusting my stuff,” he said.

That’s ok kid, they’ve jacked you around all  season with this dysfunctional front office trying to balance a number of obstacles, while still  trying to  fake a play off run, maybe you’ll get em  next time

The Yanks had a few chances to  get back in the game, once against Price and once against the Jays bull pen after Price left with  6 outs to  secure and a 4-0 lead

The night set a tone when Ellsbury the first batter in the game drilled a bullet back up  the middle that Price accidentally snared…

In the 3rd inning the Yanks had the basses loaded with their two big guns coming up and only one out

Gregorius grounded out to second. 0 3
Ackley safe at first on throwing error by second baseman Pennington. 0 3
Ellsbury singled to center, Ackley to second. 0 3
Gardner walked, Ackley to third, Ellsbury to second. 0 3
Rodriguez struck out swinging. 0 3
McCann lined out to center.

ARod missed cutting the 3-0 lead  to  3-2 or possibly emptying the bases when a bloop  down the right field line landed 6 inches foul… Price came back to punch Rodriguez out.. McCann made some noise off the bat but it was really just  an innocuous F/8 and the one chance to  mug Price went by the boards

In the 8th once Price bailed, Gregorius, Ackley and Ellsbury got the Yanks on the board but Cy Cecil iced the rally by punching out Gardner on a bad call, and ARod and McCann by overmatching both Bomber sluggers

Sanchez relieved Price. 0 4
Gregorius walked. 0 4
Ackley singled to left center, Gregorius to third. 0 4
Cecil relieved Sanchez. 0 4
Ellsbury singled to center, Gregorius scored, Ackley to second. 1 4
Gardner struck out looking. 1 4
Rodriguez struck out swinging. 1 4
McCann struck out swinging. 1 4

Bird hit his 9th HR in the 9th to make it 4-2 but Beltran, Headley, and Gregorius were no match for 20 yr old Osuna

Yanks can  still make some noise if they  can take the next 2… That’s not happening with Nova on the bump  tomorrow, they have a slight chance to  steal one game tonight with Severino on the bump and a rested Wilson, Betances, and Miller

Forget winning the series, forget catching Team Canada, the focus should be on staying ahead of the Astros who have now righted the ship  and are only 3 games behind the Yanks for home field in the WC game

Yanks need to  win one of the next 2

Severino vs Estrada tonight

  1. Part of the reason NYY can’t beat Canada and Boston can are the pitching match ups.. plus Boston has a group of young legs that are still grinding in September

Buehrle, Dickey and Huchison who Boston faces aren’t exactly Price, Stroman and Estrada

that said those 6 are better then Warren or Nova and Warren and Nova are starting 2 of these 3 games

“let’s be honest” Revere Donaldson, Joey Bats, the Parrot, Goins, Martin, and Pillar are better then Ellsbury Gardner, ARod, McCann, Ackley, and Beltran……

12 and 5 proves that point

let’s win tonight a stay ahead of Houston… Boston is on a spoiler alert, they’ll play like it’s their playoffs in NY

  2. I guess what we do best here is Monday Morning Quarterbacking. So here I go. Isolating on three guys signed for this year–Drew–5 Million, Headley 13 Million (and 52 Million for 4) and Capuano 5 Million. Combined, that’s one helluva return for 23 Million. Looking at Solarte, who was traded away for Headley–Solarte is making a little over a half million this year (or about 1/26th of what Headley is making this year.
Solarte is significantly ahead of Headley in virtually every offensive category–old time stats and sabermetrics both. All three—Drew, Capuano and Headley have each had one noteworthy season in their respective careers. And those numbers were a while ago. The rest of the time they have either been marginal producers or liabilities.
When I hear how great of a GM Cashman is, depending on my mood, I either laugh or puke.

  3. Can we still get Prado??? I agree with you Sal, about pulling out all the stops to get Donaldson. Just take Judge out of the mix. Aside from the stats since his elevation, this kid is still learning, & I got a feeling he’s got a chance to be special. Hopefully, the kid can right the ship tonight. But, I have no confidence in Novacaine for mañana. And, even if we get to the promised land, with this starting staff in shambles, it’ll probably be short lived. Maybe we can get Bernie, Tino, Wells, & El Duque for the stretch run??? Gotta be better than what we have at their respective positions!

    • Heh boys nice take on Solarte /Headley compare Noogsie Zi wasn’t aware Solarte was doing so well
Headley is killing the yanks he should sit or bat 9th we’re stuck

MB with Beane insisting on a 3rd baseman I think Cashman would have to sweeten the pot it’s gotta hurt to get a player like Donaldson
Judge is the furthest away from helping
Luckily we won’t have to worry about it

    • He’s been ascending for the past few games. Now we gotta get the Babe going. Spoke about Headley before. His overall numbers are soft, but no doubt, he’s killing us. So far, the kid looks really good.

    • Maybe they’ll drive him to games in a limo next year at SWB
Bird will be in the minors but Ryan will be on the 25 man roster

    • 10 HR’s in 121 AB’s! No Way he spends another year at SWB! The way he hits & the way the others don’t……somehow they’ll find a place for him. Take it to the bank!

Mike if there’s nobody warming up in the bullpen who do you think is coming out to pitch

this game is far from over Miller can implode in a heartbeat

  10. Pretty funny camera shot there with the two kids sitting nice and calm while Miller’s freaking out
    save me kids save me

    September 22, 2015 at 10:39 pm

    • In an effort to save time Betances should just start the inning with three guys on base

I wouldn’t worry about Miller tomorrow not with Nova on the mound
