Yanks Running Away With 2015 Hat Tip Honors

with 6 comments

“You’re going to have hot streaks and cold streaks. Right now we feel like we are battling. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to put good innings together,” Carlos Beltran said. “Today was a day where we faced a guy who was pitching well.”

Really, pitching well? Runners on base in every inning but one off a 22 yr old rookie on an innings limit, the worst bull pen  ever assembled in MLB history pitches a scoreless 3 innings while giving up  only 2 hits,  another Hat Tipper game by the Bronx Oldies

What  a Piece Of Work

Joey Claps, Hal Steinbrenner’s Press Secretary sure knows how to  skew results

“I thought we swung the bats pretty good,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “We just didn’t get hits with runners in scoring position. Their outfielders made some pretty good plays tonight behind their starting pitcher. I thought we hit the ball pretty hard tonight; we just didn’t get the hits when runners were on.”

Yes Joey hitting the ball hard for hits with RISP, that’s called clutch hitting, and you don’t have that…

What Girardi  does have right, his squad wins games when they hit HR’s, last night they showcased plenty of warning track power, but no Taters… The “some pretty good plays” on display ended with a close but no  cigar outcome  as  defensive whiz Bradley Jr  ran down line drives by Headley in the 3rd, (in front of the State Farm Ad in Left Center), and Murphy’s liner to left field in front of the Bud Sign leading off the 6th…

What Joey Spins didn’t mention, Headley’s F/7 came with  1 out and nobody on base, Murphy’s F/7 was the first  batter in the inning.. With  the way  this team hits with RISP, what  are the odds either or both Bombers plate a run??

ScoreLess?

I’m sorry but Boston’s pitching running a 29 consecutive scoreless innings tab vs the O’s is a bit skewed.. Baltimore had more Beltway  Blues with Buck and GM  Dan Duquette feuding, then the Nationals WWE Papelbon / Harper September Slam incident, makes Boston’s scoreless streak  a bit of an anomaly…

While Eduardo Rodriguez is a nice looking young rookie, he’s no Dallas Keuchel, Carlos Carrasco, or even Luis Severino, But, after E-Rod escaped early game jams, that have more to  do  with NY’s offensive woes then’s Rodriguez’s prowess,  the Nation will put him on Baseball’s 2015 Mt Rushmore after his 6 innings, 7 hits, 1 run, 1 BB, 5 K’s, NO HR’s outing

Rodriguez had runners on base in every inning but his last (the 6th) He was on the ropes in the 1st and 2nd innings, but the Yanks couldn’t get the big hit.. The clutch-less Bombers??? it’s all way too familiar at this point in the season

Ellsbury leading off with a double and Gardner giving Rodriguez a free out by sacrificing him to  3rd was asinine… Your playing for one run with Nova on the mound in the 1st inning ? Who’s pitching Kershaw, Koufax, or Spahn? If Gardner can’t hit a Lefty sit his ass on the bench, but don’t give Boston a free out unless you think your pitcher is un-hittable and 1 run will  sew it up

ARod hit a sac fly, but you got knocks from Beltran  and Headley, before Bird was punched out.. The Yanks gave Babe Gardner high  5’s after the sac bunt, they  should have gone all Papelbon, and choked the living shit out of him

Ellsbury hit a ground rule double to deep left. 0 0
Gardner sacrificed to first, Ellsbury to third. 0 0
Rodriguez hit sacrifice fly to right, Ellsbury scored. 0 1
Beltrán singled to right. 0 1
Headley singled to left, Beltrán to second. 0 1
Bird struck out swinging. 0 1

Gregorius pulled the same nonsense in the 2nd inning after Murphy led off with  a single.. Gregorius can’t bunt a lick so it made the play even dumber then the Gardner play… WTF is Pentland???????

Murphy singled to center. 0 1
Gregorius bunt popped out to third. 0 1
Refsnyder grounded into fielder’s choice to second, Murphy out at second. 0 1
Ellsbury walked, Refsnyder to second. 0 1
Gardner safe at first on error by second baseman Pedroia, Refsnyder to third, Ellsbury to second. 0 1
Rodriguez struck out swinging. 0 1

Bases loaded and Arod struck out, sorry Joe but Teixeira hitting behind ARod isn’t saving him in that  spot, the kid went right after him and the old guy couldn’t catch  up to  a fast ball… The rare Pedroia error should have been cashed in with interest

That  was it for threats until the 9th when  it was much too late, the Yanks couldn’t move the needle against  the worst bull pen ever assembled in MLB history.. Hembree, Ramirez, Barns and Ross Jr, only 1 remaining reliever from the beginning of Boston’s season and that’s Ross who was a middle reliever at  best, and is now their default closer …

Anybody know where Pentland is????? We know where Kevin Long went!

The futile 9th

Murphy doubled to deep right. 5 1
Gregorius walked. 5 1
Refsnyder grounded into fielder’s choice to third, Gregorius out at second, Murphy to third. 5 1
Ellsbury flied out to left. 5 1
Refsnyder to second on fielder’s indifference. 5 1
Gardner struck out swinging. 5 1

The Yanks offensive line

GIDP: Rodriguez
Yankees RISP: 0-7 (Gardner 0-3, Bird 0-1, Rodriguez 0-1, Refsnyder 0-1, Ellsbury 0-1)
Team LOB: 10

The key here is Babe Gardner 0-3, Cashman  should be looking for suitors in the off season

You Reap What you Sow

You pitch Ivan Nova, you get an Ivan Nova  outcome, expect 3 to 4 runs over 5 to 7 innings, expect  glimpses of brilliance mixed in with  total lack of focus and if your not gonna score 5 or 6 runs then your hanging another L in the box score

Last night 7 innings, 7 hits, 4 runs, 2 BB’s, 7 K’s, 2 HR’s 92-62 pitches, 4.89 ERA..

To be fair, i thought Nova looked better then Rodriguez, but two Boston hitters, a 4 A first baseman who is having a very good 2nd half of the season,  and a #9 hitter went Big Fly on mistakes and the Yanks didn’t

The Good:

Best sinker Nova’s had all year. 94-96 and running all over the place.

The Bad:

Each home run came with two outs and Nova said each one was just a missed location. “He was really good and he made a couple mistakes,” Girardi said. “A fastball to Shaw was right down the middle, and the one to Jackie Bradley wasn’t where he wanted it, either. I thought he threw a pretty good game. His stuff was pretty good, he just made a couple mistakes.”

You can blame Nova but this loss is once again on the offense, it was lifeless in big spots, and yes if you lose a hitter like Teixeira down the stretch it’s gonna hurt.. That  said, the St Louis Cardinals seem to lose a starting player a week and they  haven’t missed a beat…

Tex Protex?

ARod’s August and September have morphed into  what most pundits thought he’d be from April to September, that’s if he made it that far. ARod was brilliant for the first 4 months of the season, but starting August 1st until August 18th while Teixeira was still  in the line-up “for protection” ARod was 8 for 58,  (.138 BA) with 1 double, 1 HR, and 6 RBI’s

So his swoon started 18 games before Tex’s departure

He was 5 for 27  (.185) with no  extra base hits and 4 RBI’s for the remainder of August games after Tex departed.. 4 of the 6 RBI’s while Tex was still here came on a Salami, so in 57 AB’s he only drove in 2 runs, with Tex in the line-up

ARod is 18 for 75 in September with 6 HR’s, 4 doubles, 14 RBI’s..

Of course losing Teixeira is a huge loss, but was Teixeira and ARod really going to  pro rate their first  4 months of offensive prowess over the last 2 months?

Do Cashman  and Steinbrenner really think  both oldies, especially the extremely fragile Teixeira can last a whole 6 months? And is counting on both players to be  middle of the order Air Craft Carriers for 162 make any sense at  all moving forward???

The tea leaves from my vantage point read ARod was gonna run out of gas anyway, he hit a wall  with Tex in the line-up, in August, and he’s actually a tick  better in September without Tex protecting him, per the numbers..

Regardless, both players are on the flip side of being guys you should  or can count on over the long haul,  but the fact they  have $44M coming to  them in 2016 means neither player is going anywhere but  to  the middle of the order again…

So  expect more of the same in 2016, that’s if both players can rev up what  they  accomplished from April  to July in 2015, which was far beyond anybody’s comprehension

What  we don’t want is the Hal, Cashman, Girardi 3 headed monster to give us a company line of crap  about how great  things were until Tex got hurt..

That  said, I don’t see a remedy unless McCann, Beltran, Ellsbury, or Gardner can be what Donaldson has been for Team Canada this season.. The Yanks don’t have that guy,  they also  don’t have what Bumgarner did for the Giants in 2014, and without that one big stud performer carrying a team when everything else fails, the Bombers could be more of the same, a team  that just  runs out of gas down the stretch, or worse

That’s if we think Tex and Arod even have anything left in 2016…

  1. bad display of playoff run baseball by a team crawling to the finish line..The Gardner bunt sent me over the edge, the Gregorius bunt even worse

i’m not expecting much from Arod so that doesn’t bug me, the middle of the line-up worries are on Hal and the fact he doesn’t want to add a big piece that can carry a team when all else fails

Nova looked good, for him, but if you don’t score runs you know he’s gonna lose focus at some point and before you know it, you’re in a ditch on the side of the road with no cell signal to call for help….

I’ll be out of town for a few days again, back on Thursday, I’ll set up a post for tonight enjoy

  2. Last night is why i have NO faith in our playoffs’ chances.
Alex’s K with loaded bases is #1 piece of evidence.
    Nova is # 2
    Shall i continue? ??
Terrible watching Girardi’s walk to the mound, can’t hate him enough.
    Safe Travels Sally-boy,,

    • Donny the playoffs are just window dressing, an over achievement by a team most folks thought wouldn’t even win 80 games… If they can’t hit Rodriguez, Keuchel will slice them up

what’s worse was 3 innings against that bull pen my God what has Hal done to our team

  3. need a big game from Pineda tonight and it’s the only RHP they’re facing this series, so it would behoove them to wake up

  4. I’d be talking to Preller in San Diego and Jockety in Cincy for Kimbrel and or Chapman get them here

Gardner would be the guy I try to shop in the off season, package him with Sanchez and a prospect pitcher for something usable.. Boston will try to move Bradley and pieces for Kimbrel.. Bradley is better then Gardner, but maybe Gardner still has value, it’s diminishing with the contract and the fact he’s a half yr player at 32 yr’s old it’s move him now or be stuck with him

Can’t move Ellsbury’s contract but you sure as hell can move Gardner’s 3 yr’s $13M and Sanchez is blocked by McCann and Murphy

  5. Sal, I was already depressed. You just finished the job exposing the realities of this team. I was ready to jump off the terrace after Didi’s bunt attempt! Just excruciating watching this team TRYING to hit!. At this rate, we’re not long for this Post Season.
