Royalty Prevails

with 8 comments

Well it looked good on paper yesterday  afternoon, no  debilitating  rain in the forecast, fresh, or sort of fresh off a definite World Series Classic just 17 hours previous, Nerdy Fox TV Executives armed with  briefcases full of cash ready to yell “Play Ball”

OK so Erin Andrews looked like she copped Pete Rose’s meth amphetamine stash and hadn’t gotten to  sleep  yet, but Heidi Watney was resplendent in her I’ll leave the Red Light on attire

On the mound we had MLB’s epic battle of The Cafeteria Ladies, deGrom  and Cueto

“Let’s Be honest”

Advanced analytics have been so consistently wrong about the Royals over the last two seasons — PECOTA, Baseball Prospectus’ invaluable projection system, picked them third before their 2014 World Series season and fourth this year

There is an entire industry based off young earnest Ivy graduates in suits that are too big for them foisting graduate thesis papers at bewildered former baseball players that directly refute the possibility of a team like the Royals having any sort of meaningful success.

The Royals make no sense! They are an anomaly. An anomaly that keeps kicking your ass. An anomaly that is now two wins away from winning the World Series.

Another words you can  stick that Metrics slide rule where the sun don’t shine when it comes to  this 2015 KC Royals squad …. Yes analytics has taken over baseball, Fangraphs, Baseball Prospectus, Bill James, Keith Law, Mike Axisa, the whole fraternity of analytic baseball Nerds are baffled and perplexed at what  the KC Royals have been able to  accomplish, without a huge Superstar on the squad, with a Hick Hillbilly as a baseball manager, a former NYY pitching coach guiding their less then  dynamic starting rotation

The epic battle last night was a far cry from the night before as the Royals behind Fat Johnny Cueto’s amazing 2 hitter have the Amazing’s down 0-2 in the World Series after a dominate 7-1 beat down

Oh  boy,  here come the fun, On the Red and Butt Head 10 o’clock show, Beningo ( the butt head)  will  be screaming woe is me  bro, not again, Roberts (the red head ) will be wondering out loud when he’ll ever  march in one of his teams parade down  the Canyon of Heroes

Not a bad opening act for the One O’clock Big Man, The Pope Franny Show!!!

The Pope will be in full  attack mode today, shouting down line-up changes, defending poor Terry Collins, he’ll have to  temper his Matt Harvey beat  down now that his new heart throb Jake deGrom couldn’t make it past the 5th inning either, Goldie Locks got knocked out after 5 innings, giving up  6 hits, 4 runs, 3 BB’s, 2 K’s.

Jon Niese who  along with Bartolo Colon have been nothing short of great, until last night when Niese who pitched a scoreless 7th (1 BB)  was charged with 1 inning, 3 hits, 3 runs,1 BB, 1 K, after the Royals Hit Parade flat out mugged him and Addison Reed in the 8th, turning a 4-1 lead into  a coffin closing 7-1 defeat

There wasn’t much of a story for the Mets, they looked hung over from the 5 hour marathon on Tuesday..

Cueto’s stuff looked  good last night, his Louie Tiant karaoke  schtick  was working, he kept the ball  down, he had a little wrinkle to his pitches, Cueto was for the most part pitching to  contact, he only had 4 K’s, quite a transition from the night before when 15 Mets struck out

He got into a minor jamb in the 4th, the only inning where the Mets were able to score off him.. I thought Cueto was gonna finally implode after 3 scoreless innings, his only blemish was  an infield single in the 2nd..He walked Granderson, got Wright on a pop up, then walked  Babe Murphy to  set up  Cespedes… The Cuban 4 Iron hit a rocket to  third base that Moustakis turned into a force out at third, then Duda who  got the only 2 Met hits, blooped an RBI single to left center to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.

Granderson walked. 0 0
Wright fouled out to first. 0 0
Murphy walked, Granderson to second. 0 0
Céspedes grounded into fielder’s choice to third, Granderson out at third, Murphy to second. 0 0
Duda singled to shallow left center, Murphy scored, Céspedes to third. 1 0
d’Arnaud flied out to right. 1 0

That  was it, Fat Johnny shut down the next  14 Mets, until  a 2 out walk to Murphy in the 9th that  went for naught after Cespedes ended the torture session with a F/9

The Mets got nothing but weak contact off Cueto, there was a 10-8 ground ball  to  fly ball  ratio, but it seemed like every batter just  rolled over his  6 different pitch grips.. Cueto had one long inning, the 4th,  when he threw 26 pitches, but for the most part he was anywhere from 10  to  13 pitches per inning sans a 16 pitch 7th  and a 15 pitch 9th…

As for deGrom, he was getting the job done, through the first  3 innings he allowed only a walk to Gordon.. A Duda error put him in trouble in the 4th  but he escaped clean with his 1-0 lead intact

Zobrist safe at first on error by first baseman Duda. 1 0
Cain lined out to first. 1 0
Hosmer singled to center, Zobrist to second. 1 0
K. Morales grounded out to first, Zobrist to third, Hosmer to second. 1 0
Moustakas walked. 1 0
Pérez grounded out to shortstop. 1 0

The Royals pecked away in the 5th, almost like they  had a GPS inserted in every game ball…Their strength is putting the ball in  play, an  anomaly in this age of the Strike Out, and it seemed every BABIP found a hole or moved the needle in a positive direction

Gordon walked. 1 0
Rios singled to shallow left, Gordon to second. 1 0
Escobar singled to center, Gordon scored, Rios to second. 1 1
Zobrist grounded out to first, Rios to third, Escobar to second. 1 1
Cain lined out to center. 1 1
Hosmer singled to center, Rios and Escobar scored. 1 3
K. Morales singled to right, Hosmer to third. 1 3
Moustakas singled to right, Hosmer scored, K. Morales to third. 1 4
Pérez grounded out to third. 1 4

The game remained status quo  for 2 more innings until  the Royals broke it open win the 8th

JONATHON NIESE PITCHING FOR NEW YORK NYM KC
Moustakas singled to right. 1 4
Pérez doubled to left, Moustakas to third. 1 4
Gordon doubled to left, Moustakas scored, Pérez to third. 1 5
Reed relieved Niese. 1 5
Orlando hit sacrifice fly to left, Pérez scored, Gordon to third. 1 6
Escobar tripled to deep center, Gordon scored. 1 7
Gilmartin relieved Reed. 1 7
Zobrist grounded out to shortstop. 1 7
Cain popped out to second. 1 7

The Royals had 10 hits, 2 doubles, a triple and 7 singles, they also coaxed 4 BB’s.. They  were a clutch 5 for 12 with RISP, and they only struck out 3 times on the night

The Mets will no doubt come back to NY with renewed confidence despite the tough loss on Tuesday, and the mail in job last night.. The Amazings for the first  time in over two months looked like their old sleepy cousins from the Bronx, in-fact I thought I had slipped into  a dream  and was watching any NYY game from August 1st until  their embarrassing  sleepwalk vs the Astros in the WC game..

“I still think we’re going to win this thing,” pitching coach Dan Warthen said, answering a question about his rotation. “I don’t think they have hit the wall at all.

“If anything, [Matt] Harvey had 10 days off, three times over the last five weeks, I think he is too strong. Jacob, the ball was coming out of his hand great today, he just got a little anxious and didn’t let the arm catch up on some of those breaking balls. It’s the World Series, guys’ excitement, adrenaline, I think they feel pretty good, actually.”

OK sounds like a plan, let’s keep  this baseball  train rolling boys,

the Don B’s favorite Met, Big Thor will get his chance on Friday night vs the Excitable boy  Yordano Ventura

Let’s hope the Mets take the game on Friday, and don’t dress up as Losers on Halloween Night, Saturday

the Whole 9

  1. congrats to Miller for winning his Mo Rivera award, and former bomber Mark Melancon took the NL honors.. That’s one thing the Yanks have done well over the yr’s, either develop or buy a decent closer.. even guys they flipped seem to rise to the top

just fish around Cashman, you don’t have to trade him, but don’t put your head in the sand either

Yanks need to build on their pitching, all of their positions are blocked sans 2nd base and that looks like Ackley and Refsynder, with Pirela mashing in the winter legue as we speak as another alternative

We know Hal won’t spend the money, so Cashman needs to get creative finding that Sonny Gray, Carlos Carrasco, Chris Sale diamond

KC TV reporter interviewing Cueto’s brother, thinking it was Cueto…

Funny i was recently in an Airport when some knucklehead came up to my guitar player buddy and talked to him for 10 minutes… finally when the conversation got totally bizarre I jumped in…

come to find out he thought my buddy was the guitar player Kim Simmonds from Savoy Brown, who looks like a little old English grandmother now

bummed my buddy out lol…. I told him not to worry Simmonds is 5 yr’s older then him
