Gardner To Mariners Window Shuts

with 8 comments

Well last week  we read the Mariners were looking for an athletic center fielder, and the rumor mills created a Brett Gardner for James Paxton trade.

The tea leaves just  didn’t read clear enough for us to  swallow the whole bait, it was almost too  good to be true that Gardner’s Bomber shelf life was  finally coming to  an expiration date

After all, he was by default more then  talent, the unfortunate face of the Bombers, the oldest remaining home grown player.. Cashman  and Girardi  adored the guy, and based on the current market, his contract or what’s left of it was relatively cheap.

Take a deep  breath  Gardner fans, we can take  the Mariners off the Gardner bucket list this morning, they’ve moved on acquiring Leonys Martin and pitcher Anthony Bass from the Texas Rangers for Tom Wilhelmsen, outfielder James Jones and a player to be named later

Martin at 27 yr’s old  is 5 yr’s younger then Gardner, his slash line isn’t very good, but like Gardner a wrist injury seems to be the spin

.219/.264/.313 slash line last year while dealing with a wrist injury, and he rarely displayed much power, hitting 20 home runs in 429 games with the Rangers.

Seattle GM Jerry Dipoto gave up  a lot less then the young lefty Paxton for his  newest addition, plus Martin who signed a Major League contract with Texas as amateur free agent from Cuba 5/4/11 is a hell of a lot cheaper.

5 years/$15.5M (2011-15)

Martin has 2 more yr’s left of team control so he’s arbitration eligible after making a paltry $3.5M in 2015

The way Gardner performed in the 2nd half after making the All Star team as an injury replacement, Martin’s complete 2015 slash looks about as anemic as Gardner’s 2nd half production, so Dipoto makes the right move here, much  to my chagrin

You could argue the injury bug hurt Martin’s season the way the Yanks will     state the same was true for Gardner’s 2nd half, but Dipoto won’t be stuck paying Gardner $13M per season  until he’s 35 yr’s old, so  there is minimal  risk acquiring Martin and throw in Jones plus the PTBNL

Bummer..

YUanks fired Pantload but kept the rest of the coaches.. I also read Harkey is back in the pen

Another yr of Espada coaching 3rd… i guess Hal needs somebody to fire after they miss the playoffs

Biggest news would be if Bryce Harper takes a loan from Boras like Harvey did, avoids a Stanton like $325M extension and he comes out as a Free Agent in 2018… Yanks will pay him $400M

By 2018 they’ll have missed the playoffs 5 of 6 yr’s, plus ARod and Sabathia $50.5M will come off the books, perfect timing

    • The handwriting was on the wall about Harkeyconing back as soon as they fired Gary Tuck. He’s ass hole buddies with Joey Claps. Tuck did a great job, especially helping Bubba find his inner Pudge Rodriguez with his throwing. Can’t believe Estrada escaped the Hangman! He was horrible throughout the year! Bring back Willow!!!

  2. That Murphy deal has disaster written all over it… In fact I’m wondering if Cashman pitched Sanchez but they said nah, we want the Murphy kid, he has an all around game and character… I’m starting to hate the Hicks deal before it even has a chance to come to fruition

this Fowler kid looks like an interesting prospect, probably get flipped hes only 20 but Gardner is here 3 more yr’s and Ellsbury has 5 more yr.’s.. damn shame

  3. Again Harper talks what cash the Yanks have to pay Sabathia and Arod but it’s about the AAV and that exceeds $50M not $46M.. Yanks are a cash cow that means nothing it’s fucking tax that’s killing Steinbrenner

Yes it’ll be prudent to bring in Price, based on the FA list is barron next season when money finally comes off the books but add $30M AAV to the already $224M payroll and Hal will be paying tax on a $254M payroll which means 50% tax on $66M… let’s not get crazy here thinking Price is coming to NY

  4. Sal–Gardner is a “religion” on many of the Yankee blogs. sometimes when I get a little too much Jack Daniels in me, I will venture to one of the sites and express my views on him. The response comes at me from all angles.I am insulted to the point where, if compared to Sarah Palin or Obama, Sarah would be in the Mensa Society and Obama would be General Patton.
One guy told me that his OPS+ of 101 was great. And silly me, thinking that an OPS+ of 100 was average.
Same way with his number of strikeouts, which I was told was a trade-off for more walks and a high on base percentage. My computer apparently has different numbers showing up on the screen. The main guy coming after me has a name of Charleston Chew. Probably just a coincidence that Gardzilla is from South Carolina and went to college at the University of Charleston. Or maybe not—can we assume that they are mostly all blood relatives down there?
Gardner is like the injury to my baseball catching left knee—it will never go away and neither will he.

  6. hey bondsie, in retrospect your right on Hark, I never put the 2 and 2 together but as you allude to it was hidden in plain sight… Espada is a Girardi guy from what I’ve read, and they’ll need another scape goat after this season so Cockrell and Espy hopefully are just renting…. I didn’t know much about Tuck outside of reading he was pretty good, so i have no idea what that was about….but your take sounds good enough

  7. We have become the laughingstock of the Hot Stove season.
Embarrassing that the Mutts are in the chase for Zobrist and we aren’t.
    Grrrrr,
Tell C.C. he can coach if he retires or something, plus yesterday’s comments about Tex coming back strongly and A-Rod being as good as last year are laughable too.
We have sunk so low it is sad.
