The GM Meetings / Cashman Vacation

with 22 comments

The GM meetings are taking place in Nashville, but we have a better shot getting a record deal  then any big trade or free agent splash..

Might as well look at this little 4 day  trip  as a mini  vacation for Cash and his crew..

Doesn’t it feel like  Hal has his GM standing on a street corner banging on a tambourine while whoever he hired as his assistant holds the Salvation Army Cup looking for donations so  the Cashman posse can afford a bus trip back to  the Bronx

Red Sox Check All Their Boxes

Good job by Dombrowski and Hazen getting Carson Smith who we can only hope his dominant yr was the outlier and not shades of things to come

It’s completely obvious the Red Sox are aiming for the RHB heavy Toronto Blue Jays, and stifling other big RHB’s in the AL East with their predominately RHP heavy Bull Pen

Hazen and Dombrowski obviously don’t feel  the NYY LHB heavy team is much of a threat

As Sherman points out, he was hoping the NYY were targeting Smith in the Gardner deal, but Dipoto is a metric nerd’s nerd and wanted to  replace  the loss of Iwakuma with  an innings eater, the 70 inning BP guy be damned

Andrew Friedman  and Magic Johnson get an  asset for over paying Iwakuma at  3 yr’s $45M.. Dombrowski doesn’t care about Metrics and pretty much  traded a starter (potential 200 innings)  for a reliever potential 70 innings) with Aro  and Elias as throw ins

I guess Nova didn’t move the needle for the Mariners…I had to laugh when I read Cashman’s quotes that he wasn’t gonna just  sell low and give Nova away.. Don’t worry Cash, I doubt anybody would take him for a bag of donuts plus pay him $4.5M

Marchand Is Cut Off

I’m not sure what Andrew Marchand is drinking at the  Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center bar, but maybe they better cut him off.

Marchand thinks it’s a good idea for the Yanks to  “go  get Jose Fernandez” the malcontent stud 23 yr old Miami  Ace from Cuba who is rumored to be on the block..

That request is a no brainer, but Marchand actually thinks  Aaron Judge Andrew Miller and a lower end prospect gets Fernandez to  NY

First off Judge hasn’t proven anything at Triple A no less be ready to play  a role as Miami’s starting Right Fielder, and why would any GM trade their 23 yr old Ace for a closer and a suspect?

Miami  wants 5 of any team’s top  prospects in a haul  for the Boras client, which probably won’t happen but I bet they get 2 or 3 elite cost controlled players and two  top  20 prospects

The Yanks would have to  start  with Severino, Bird and Judge or Sanchez toss in  Gardner or Miller plus maybe eat some Gardner / Miller money before they  can start to  compete with any team’s offer

Yes prospects are  just suspects until proven otherwise but losing Severino defeats the purpose of getting Fernandez, plus Judge and Bird are gonna take over for Teixeira and Beltran, $38M worth of contracts after next season

So  the now budget conscious NYY would need to  actually spend money at 1st base and a corner OF position

Do  the Yanks need Fernandez, hell yes, but it’s best they  stay  out of that prospect player haul

Yes George would drive the Bomber kids to Fla. for Fernandez, then sign Chris Davis to play  right field for one yr and Justin Upton to play left field

Ah the good old days

Molitor: Hicks might Be Good or Might Be Bad

Not really a ringing endorsement from a  Brewer Hall of Fame player who now manages the Twins, especially in this politically correct era of baseball player criticism

Molitor said, Hicks — a switch hitter — needs to get more consistent from the left side of the plate. And he’s got to realized his “identity,” the manager said.

“I don’t think — if there’s one thing he’s still trying to identify himself as a player,” Molitor said, “it’s what is his good year going to look like? Is it going to be more power or more on base or more stolen bases.”

The Yanks are hoping that Mr Baseball Alex Rodriguez can  get to Hicks and straighten him out.. He was a top prospect who has lost his way, the type of buy low player Cashman is definitely looking for

Gregorius was the same breed of cat until ARod helped him, Cashman can’t seem to  draft good players so he’s doing the next best thing, trading for other team’s high profile busts, and hoping his  older iconic players can help  these guys find their game

At least we’re getting something out of all  these albatross contracts, they’re holding a fantasy baseball  camp in the Bronx.

The 3 Day Tour

Axisa

The Blind Boy of RAB, Mikey 2 Chins Axisa did a report card on Joey Claps AKA Joey Day Care, the one thing that  struck me was Joey’s take on using relievers

The Yankees were the only team in baseball to not use a reliever three days in a row this past season. Two days in a row happened all the time, it has to in this day and age, but not a single Yankees reliever pitched three consecutive days at any point in 2015. Not even down the stretch when the team was fighting for a postseason spot..

“It’s the thought process from the beginning (of the year),” said Girardi to reporters in early September. “I don’t throw guys three days in a row. If they’ve thrown three out of four, I don’t throw them another. That’s thought, I think, really hard about that, how we use our relievers and how you keep them healthy during the course of the year.”

Unfortunately Joey may not have inserted guys 3 days in a row, but he beat the dog shit out of Betances who  was throwing water balloons down the stretch

he’s thrown 18.2 innings more than any reliever the last two seasons

This is all  well  and good, but if that’s the team’s philosophy why  doesn’t Cashman  bring in another weapon out of the pen..? He’s got a rotation  full of glass jaws, in fact Canadian Club Sabathia, a friggin drunk, ate the most innings of any NYY pitcher (167.1)

Flush  that money ball bull shit down the toilet and bring in another reliever  like Carson Smith… Oh wait a minute Boston already  stole him…

Actually the Smith  deal  was the perfect storm  for Boston, Dipoto scouted Wade Miley and he knew him well, and only a non metric guy like Dombrowski  would trade a starter 200 innings, for a reliever, 70 innings

And what  starter does Cashman have that  anybody wants besides Eovaldi? Right answer, None… Nova is a dog that  won’t hunt but I would have dangled Warren, but then  again Warren is a cheap  starter

OK how about Darren O’Day a free agent, Soria a free agent, Tony Sipp  a free agent?? They  cost money not happening

Hopefully one of the 15 kids Cashman force fed us last yr can become that illusive cost controlled weapon… After all  they  did waste a first  round pick on the injured Jacob Lindgren, let’s see how that  brilliant move works out..

Hopefully better then the 1st round 30th pick  they  got for Robertson, Kyle Holder who  couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a row boat..

    • that was expected Donny, they don’t want Sanchez sitting the bench, and he’s not ready to be a catcher at the varsity level

It’s clear now they were auditioning Murphy for trade in the off season.. Tyler Flowers is the guy they were trying to get.. Yeah it’s complete money ball bull shit, and it’s all part of Hal dropping payroll

if you notice Young is getting $6.5M from Boston Hicks $500K from the Yanks… Yanks operating like the fucking Tampa Bay Rays.. My suggestion boycott the stadium, when they have Jeter day don’t show up, send Hal a message

Joel Sherman ‏@Joelsherman1 3h3 hours ago
#Yankees No. 1 goal is to add SPs just like Severino — between 0-3 yrs service with low pay/high ceilings. Why would they trade him?

who the hell doesn’t want a pitcher with Severino talent or a young pitcher with 0-3 yr’s service time making no money with a high ceiling ??? What makes Cashman think he can get that for a 32 yr old out fielder who already cashed in on his base running skills and is vulnerable to injury

And who are they replacing Betances with if they trade Miller? Wilson and Shreve

The Yanks are really sad, maybe Cashman should just avoid the media

  5. probably a main reason why Cashman didn’t want Chapman in the first place.. And to think Boston would have traded for him..

Dombrowski is going for it at all costs, he’s our worst nightmare, a reckless GM with a lot of money to spend and an owner who gave him autonomy to do so…That’s what landing in the basement 3 out of 4 yr’s will do..

    • Thanks Big D… Too bad Price didn’t go to Chicago, Maddon is putting the old band back together, that same crew that didn’t win in Tampa could win in Chicago

Mets should go back to Murphy, with a pick attached who the hell is gonna sign him?

I hope they don’t get Castro, but if it means losing Ryan then I’m in.. I wanna see Refsynder sink or swim

Like to see Cashman try to hold out whoever he gives up for Castro try to get pitching

  12. at least we got rid of Ryan, means Refsynder stays or Castro goes in a trade for pitching, or Refsynder goes for pitching.. who’s the back up 3rd baseman?

    No more Ryan, thank god
