Bronx Town

Bomber GM Brian Cashman has morphed into MLB’s very own Father Flanagan

Father Eddy Flanagan an Irish priest who fled to Nebraska in the early 1900’s  was  the founder and visionary for what’s known today as Boys Town. He had a dream that every child could be a productive citizen if given love, a home, an education and a trade. He accepted boys of every race, color and creed.

“There are no bad boys. There is only bad environment, bad training, bad example, bad thinking.”

Late Tuesday afternoon / early evening Father Cashman who has been laying low  in Nashville, pounced on the newest  Bronx Town candidate, Cub’s 2nd base / SS Starling Castro who  will now most likely be the Bombers starting 2nd baseman

The NYY GM’s marching orders this winter were to not  spend Hal Steinbrenner’s money, in fact Cashman had the daunting task of figuring out a way to drop payroll while simultaneously making the team younger

With no farm system to  enhance his over priced aging squad, Cashman started a trend last year of picking up other team’s top  rated young players who had not lived up  to their prospect hype..

The hope was a change of scenery while donning the Pinstripes, with brand name Superstars as mentors, said exiled players would finally tap into  their touted upside

Gregorius, Eovaldi, and Ackley were the first wave of prospect busts to  land in Bronx Town, and I’ll be damned if all  3 didn’t start  to  show signs of their potential.

This off season Cashman flipped the talented but blocked catcher  JR Murphy for Aaron Hicks who  was a huge disappointment in Minnesota. At the moment Hicks who makes $500K is replacing Chris Young who Boston money whipped to  the tune of 2 yr’s $13M or $6.5M per yr

Yesterday Cashman who  turned down  the original Gardner for Castro trade, sent the extremely versatile  27 yr old Adam Warren  and perennial whipping boy Brendan Ryan to the Cubs for the 25 yr old Castro who the Cubs sold low, or at least we hope they  did..

There are three potential  downsides to this move

  1. Rob Refsynder the 24 yr old home grown red headed step  child will once again land on the bench, or get  traded

2. Castro actually adds payroll, and age (26 in March). He was originally signed  after three great  seasons with  the Cubs to  an  extension that bought out his arbitration and a few yr’s of free agency

7 years/$60M (2013-19), plus 2020 option

  • 13:$5M, 14:$5M, 15:$6M, 16:$7M, 17:$9M, 18:$10M, 19:$11M,20:$16M club option ($1M buyout)

The Yanks now have possession of Castro  for 4 yr’s $38M, which if he continues to put up numbers  like he did once Joe Maddon moved him to  2nd base is a bargain

Castro hit .353/.373/.588 (161 wRC+) with six home runs in 42 games after changing positions. Obviously the Yankees are hoping to get that guy going forward.

3. The third potential gaffe, if his last 42 games at 2nd base are the outlier, the Cubs unloaded the worst of their young middle infield trio

Addison Russell and Javier Baez are still in the Cub  mix with newly acquired Ben Zobrist who’s free agency signing was the reason Castro  was flipped to NY

Why was  Castro available in the first place?  He’s pretty much sucked the last 2 seasons

Castro’s  been one of the worst players in baseball two of the last three years by WAR. His good years have been good but not great (117 wRC+ and 2.8 fWAR in 2014) and his down years have been abysmal (74 wRC+ and 0.1 fWAR in 2013). Special assistant Jim Hendry was the Cubs GM when they signed, developed, and summoned Castro to MLB, so he surely had input into this move.

Again you don’t pick up on potential top  shelf talent unless there are some warts, and every player in Father Cashman’s recent Bronx Town assault have fallen out of favor with their parent club..

“He looked like a different player after the position change,” said Brian Cashman to reporters Tuesday evening, after the trade was announced. “I like that he’s athletic. I like his age. (I like that he) can play multiple positions and adds balance to lineup. He’s a contact-oriented player. He’s a free swinger, but a contact (freak) … (Castro) checks a lot of boxes — youth, flexibility.”

The Yanks will miss the versatile Adam Warren, who was a poor man’s Ramiro Mendoza, but let’s not get crazy..

At best he was depth in the Bomber rotation, and at  27 yr’s old he was never gonna be more then a back of the rotation  starter.. You  could plug him into  dual roles, so  that  was his best  attribute…

The Yanks will now have to hand that  gig to Ivan Nova or Brian Mitchell, that’s if those guys aren’t  traded to Miami  for Martin Prado who  the Yanks could really use

Thankfully we’ll never have to  watch Brendan Ryan in pinstripes  ever again, so  as Big D said, no  matter what happens with Castro,  this trade is an overwhelming Success!!!!

With Ryan gone, the Bombers no longer have a backup on their depth  chart for Chase Headley

In an  extensive board meeting late last night with  one of the trusted Paint the Black  consigliere’ mosconebailbonds, we decided Prado is the man  we need back in the Bronx

Prado would be able to play 3rd, 2nd, fake the corner OF spots and despite his $11M paycheck for which  the Yanks are already  shelling out $3M, his contract expires after the season

If Father Cashman flips Gardner for pitching, the Prado money wouldn’t impact Cashman’s marching orders to  drop payroll.. After 2016 Teixeira $23M, Beltran $15M and Prado $11M all  come off the books

Cashman  should make this move, unfortunately it will  cost a player / prospect that maybe stings like Mitchell, or one that causes celebration like Nova.. ! The Marlins have Dee Gordon so Refsynder would be safe in a deal with  Miami

We’ll  drop  the timeline for this deal in our comment section along with  media links on the insiders takes

The vote here is a thumbs up,  but if Refsynder gets traded I won’t be as happy.

If Cashman  can get Prado back in the fold I’ll be ecstatic, the Bombers would then have versatile depth with Swiss army knives Prado  and Ackley, a potential RHB platoon with Refsynder 2nd base, and Castro SS who could  spell Gregorius vs tough LHP

The Tyler Flowers to  NY rumor died after the Braves signed Flowers, so  Sanchez is still in the mix as McCann’s back-up, and the Don B can  call of the hit on Father Cashman

The Yanks have now joined the Hot Stove party, and we can  expect more movement, they  still need pitching and a utility player who  can  back up Headley

  1. For the Yankees, this move is the latest in a string of deals aimed at getting younger over the last 13 months or so. Here’s a quick timeline:

December 2014: Acquired Didi Gregorius for Shane Greene.
December 2014: Acquired Nathan Eovaldi (and others) for Martin Prado and David Phelps.
July 2015: Acquired Dustin Ackley for Ramon Flores and Jose Ramirez.
November 2015: Acquired Aaron Hicks for John Ryan Murphy.
December 2015: Acquired Castro for Warren and a player to be named.

Ackley is the oldest of the five players the Yankees acquired in those trades at 27. Hicks is 26, Castro is 25, and both Eovaldi and Gregorius were 24 at the time of their deals.

All five of those players have some things in common: They’re all very talented — all five appeared on at least one Baseball America top-100 prospects list — they’ve all had some struggles at the MLB level, and they were all deemed expendable by their former clubs. New York swooped in to acquire change-of-scenery guys.

#Cubs asked at beginning and end of process about Gardner for Castro. #Yankees said no.

From what could tell Castro to #Yankees was contingent on #Cubs getting Zobrist. Once A happened, B is following close behind. Not final yet

One of Cashman’s most trusted lieutenants is Jim Hendry, was #Cubs GM when Castro was signed in 2006 as an amateur and made MLB debut in ‘10

Because Epstein/Hoyer drafted him for #Redsox I figured I would ask on Ellsbury, but #Cubs not interested in him either.

#Yankees No. 1 goal is to add SPs just like Severino — between 0-3 yrs service with low pay/high ceilings. Why would they trade him?

this is a strange one… Miller for Astros right-hander Vincent Velasquez, who fits into general manager Brian Cashman’s plan to add a starting pitcher with less than three years of big league time. then flip him to miami for Ozuna who replaces Gardner who brings back pitching???

Starlin Castro had +2 def. runs saved in 258 innings at 2B with Cubs.

Refsnyder/Ackley had -5 def. runs saved in 178 innings with Yankees.

  2. Met fans are going nuts losing Zobrist. That made Castro and his salary expendable(Russell & Baez are very low salaried) so the Yanks got a new 2bman. Theo did Cashman a favor taking super stiff Ryan back along with his $million salary-I predict Ryan will be cut by the end of the year-lol Yanks are getting younger and more athletic, have their ss/2b combo for the next few years.Castro is certainly better than the supposed platoon of Refsnyder/Ackley,not to mention Stephen Drew!! The trade is probably not good news for Refsnyder who may be back at the Scranton Holiday Inn. In the past 2 years Cashman has traded Greene,Phelps(our $1000 car) and Warren(our $999 special)-don’t get too attached to their youngsters,
they don’t seem to last long. At least the Yanks did something, maybe there are more deals to come.
They may even sign some free agents down the road when the prices come down, they will not be signing any of the big names.

    • hey Big D lol

the Mets went after a guy they knew they couldn’t get is my guess, Maddon Midwest close to home, if you win in Chicago thy’ll build you a statue , Mets are cheap so your not gonna get a front office that wants to win, they have the pitching but will they balance out the team?… then they dissed Murphy so they wouldn’t have to pay him either

Can’t wait to hear Beningo and Roberts.. Beningo didn’t want Zobrist, but if your Murphy do you want the Mets?

  3. So, after our late night smoke filled back room discussion on the day’s events, it was decided that getting Prado as the all-purpose super utility guy, was the way to go. On the face of it, his 11mm salary this year, which the Yanks are paying 3mm, seems like too much for the cost conscious Yanks. But with the recent signings of over payments for players, it has dragged the salary structure upwards. Now, 11mm, while somewhat high, isn’t as egregious as it was a year ago. This would be a tremendous move if Cashman can get the blessing from Hal & pull it off with it not hurting too much.

  4. 10:30am: Following the trade yesterday, Cashman confirmed the Cubs asked about Brett Gardner early in the Starlin Castro trade talks, but that wasn’t happening. He also said Luis Severino, Greg Bird, and Aaron Judge have not been offered in any deals this offseason. [Joel Sherman, Tyler Kepner]

10:30am: “Hopefully I can do some things to add to our depth,” said Cashman, specifically about the pitching staff. He did not rule out free agents but did acknowledge trades are more likely. “I’ve been busiest on the trade front … If it’s old and expensive, we did not check on that.” [Erik Boland, Marly Rivera, Mark Feinsand]

10:30am: Tyler Flowers, who was connected to the Yankees earlier this week, signed a two-year deal with the Braves yesterday. Cashman also confirmed they did check in with Ben Zobrist earlier this week, though his first choice was the Cubs. [Bob Nightengale, Ken Davidoff]

10:30am: The Yankees have shown an interest in Astros righty Vincent Velasquez. Houston has interest in Andrew Miller and Velasquez could be part of the package. However, there’s some thought the Yankees would flip Velasquez to the Marlins for Marcell Ozuna. [George King]

10:30am: Several teams have called about Justin Wilson, including the Tigers. Hey, if Miller is available, there’s no reason Wilson shouldn’t be as well. Whether the Yankees are comfortable trading both end game lefties is another matter. [George King]

10:42am: Brett Gardner remains available but nothing is close at the moment. Nothing’s changed after the Castro pickup. [Jon Heyman]

12:47pm: The Yankees are talking to the Dodgers and Astros about Andrew Miller. Houston’s been on Miller for a while now, and the Dodgers lost out on Aroldis Chapman earlier this week. In terms of performance plus contract, Miller is by frickin’ far the best available reliever right now. [Bob Nightengale]

  5. Wonder if Pitt goes after Murphy now? lol Although sounds like a Salary dump… Good move for Mets for a yr

    December 9, 2015 at 3:42 pm

  6. They traded Wilson to the Tigers for 2 minor league pitchers

    December 9, 2015 at 7:04 pm

    • Hey Big D! Are you kidding me!!! After Warren they trade Wilson for what? A bag of balls? Prospects??? Who the hell did they get? Cashman made a good trade getting Castro, but why trade Wilson?? He’s now decimated the bullpen! Gotta find out more on this deal. OY!!
