The Philly Connection

In 2015 the Yankees for tax purposes, had a $241M payroll, after the Luxury Tax and the extra $12/$13M  for items such as pension, insurance, etc.

That figure or close to it isn’t going away  anytime soon, unless Miller and or Gardner get traded, no-one else on the roster with any considerable heft to  their paycheck is trade-able without the Yanks eating a sizable chuck  of their salary

2016 will once again carry the same burden only Sensie Joel Sherman in his late afternoon 12/26/15 sobering article has the number at  about $235M

Sherman points out how the Yanks are  performing a juggling act between trying to  contend, getting younger, and being the Philadelphia Phillies

We know this fact, but we’re always glad when an MLB media insider states the obvious… It puts an approval stamp on the confirmation, and only the whistlers who  walk past the Pinstriped graveyard will  dispute the matter at hand…

I remember me whining a few years back   about how the Phillies were taking on payroll but no media depicted them  as the Evil Empire South, the way they had touted the 2009 Bombers

The Yanks ended up  winning a Ring in 09  by beating the Phillies who  from 2007 to  2011 made it to  the Playoffs 5 times. They lost 2 NLDS, 1 NLCS, played in 2 World Series, winning one (2008) and losing the other (2009)

As for the 2016 Yanks

They currently project at around $235 million. The Yankees have 11 signed players at about $195 million, five arbitration-eligible players at approximately $20 million, and every team is assessed a charge of roughly $13 million for items such as pension, insurance, etc. That is $228 million for 16 signed players. To round out a 25-man roster even with minimum-wage earners, the Yankees would climb, to say, $233 million.

The 11 players signed have $187M tethered to Hal’s checkbook, but for tax purposes Sherman is in the $195M neighborhood which is about right… ARod’s AAV is $27.5M but he makes ($20M) which is  less then Ellsbury (21.1M) in 2016

Sabathia makes $25M but his AAV is $24M, Castro’s AAV is $1M more then his $7.85M 2016 salary, and of course the Tax is based on a 40 man  roster payroll not a 25 man, plus the Yanks are paying Prado $3M to play in Miami

Anyway hence the lack of interest in any FA players, but while teams like Boston who  finished in the basement 3 of the last 4 yr’s plus paid out $1.8M in penalties in 2015, (that  percentage will increase in 2016 as they no doubt go over the $1898M again unless they  can  dump Ramirez or Sandoval) the Yanks have contended 23 yr’s in a row

I guess we should give Cashman a tattered  feather to put in his cap for contending from 1993 to 2015..

The Yanks have made it to  the playoffs 18 times

They’ve been in 7 World Series games with a 5 and 2 record

They’ve lost 7 ALDS, lost 3 ALCS and lost  1 WC and in 5 of the last 23 yr’s they’ve missed the playoffs completely… Of course in 1994 they were in first place when  the strike hit…

The Yanks have no-one but themselves to blame for being in a precarious spot in 2016… While they  weren’t shy about spending money, the purchases they  made in both 09  and 2014, plus the ARod extension in 08 weren’t the most prudent

I don’t remember too many  people being up -set with the Sabathia extension, I don’t think  any of us expected him to  drop off this bad.. Most of us wanted Tanaka, and at 25 despite warnings from  across the league, it was a minor shock to hear his elbow had turned into  a bowl of rigatoni

The 2014 signings were bad, McCann getting $85M when the strength of your system was catching, Ellsbury getting slugger money, and Beltran despite having a week or two  where he carries the Yanks has been an unmitigated disaster

Like it or not we’re stuck  with  this squad, and this notion  that  anybody is handing over a decent cost controlled pitcher for Nova who  also has $4.5M coming is absurd

Don’t be surprised if Nova is dumped for a few minor league pitchers in an effort to  lose his $4.5M off the payroll

From Nicky 2 fingers Cafardo

Over the last three seasons, among batters with at least 1,800 PA, no one walked fewer times than Alcides Escobar and Adam Jones with just 68 each.” Also, “Through his age-25 season, Starlin Castro has 991 hits and 62 homers. Through his age-25 season, Carl Crawford had 990 hits and 62 homers.

That’s kool Crawford was a good player, it was the Boston landscape and the media that  wigged him out… In Ny, the front office has already put a bulls eye on the big contracts, so Castro  who is low man on the totem pole at $7.8M will  roam  scott free, unless he really sucks

    • Hey Sal, listen, I woulda been right in front of the TV with ya! Nothing wrong with that from where I’m standing. Gotta keep your phone on ALWAYS! Never know what might happen. Got to stay connected. If the situation continues, I could always send Jimmy & Carmine over to pay a visit and “explain” how things are. Say the word bro!

  4. Opt outs, ARod almost went to Boston, OK so one that didn’t pan out, or did it?… 1 ring a lot of BS and he crippled the payroll.. He is Mr Baseball now, but I think the Yanks may have taken the Arod signing on the chin… Although that first deal with Texas paying a lot of the freight was a genius move, it’s the extension Hank Fredo drummed up that fucked it all up
