Monday Morning Quarter Back

with 13 comments

There’s not much  going on with the Yanks  that  we already haven’t covered since the Chapman  extravaganza

Gardner and Murphy are still on the block, but  as expected Cashman wants the type of return on Miller that team’s will  think is much too  steep

That  works for me I’m looking forward to watching Betances, Miller, and Chapman

Gardner on the other hand maybe partnered with a prospect could get a young cost controlled pitcher..

Harper’s Bizarre

John Harper went off the rails yesterday making a trade proposal  that  sends Miller and Gardner to  the Mets for Wheeler, Montero,  and De Aza

Wheeler needs to  prove he’s back from Tommy John, Montero  was also  injured in  2015, and De Aza doesn’t move the needle

If  the Mets want to  ship Wheeler to  the Yanks they  can have Gardner and Mateo…

Nice try Harp, who had to be looking for Brownie points from SNY, although with pitching now the new trend, as opposed to  hitting and Bull Pens last off season, the Mets would no  doubt hang up  first  at our deal..

Bryan Hoch is a bit behind but  he does cover the final  days of 2015 in this mailbag article

He mused the Yanks could possibly give Sabathia another yr based on the price of pitching, but the 37 yr old Sabathia in 2018 would have to work  dirt cheap  and maybe get an incentive ladened deal

I thought the Dodgers made out well  grabbing Kenta Maeda, the Japanese star pitcher

They had to  front $20M to negotiate, then gave him an 8 yr $25M deal with incentives, so  the dude will have to  earn his money

More deals like this please, if you pitch  well  your money comes in droves, kudos to Andrew Friedman for this one..

Imagine if the Yanks had worked out a deal like this for Sabathia???

BYE BYE Jets

Jeez what  a bummer, the Jets lost to Rex Ryan  and the Bills ending their season.. Now we don’t have to listen  to  the Giddy Twins, Beningo  and the Red Headed Nerd yuking it up

I don’t follow football but I’m guessing a team  with me as QB and the Don B as wide receiver had as much  chance moving the needle in the playoffs as the Jets

Oh the Pain Beningo should be in rare form today…

  2. I’m not so sure how well the Dodgers made out in the Maeda deal. The structure of the contract sounds kosher, incentive laden. But, giving an 8 yr deal to a guy who’s never pitched in The Show, at 28 yrs old, no matter what his rep is in the Homeland, seems somewhat foolish. Where Freidman really screwed up, was letting Greinke slip thru his fingers. That, was inexcusable.

    • hey mB, We’ll see what kind of pitcher this guy is but the way pitching is valued a $3M AAV is cheaper then Beano… we’ll have to see what the incentives are, I like the fact he has to earn them, unlike Tanaka who cost $175M, this kid cost LA $45M over the 8 yr span, plus the incentives of course

Nova makes more money then Maeda… He has logged over 1500 innings, seems like a small guy, kind of like Guidry.. What’s strange about the LA rotation they’re all LH

Should be a fun watch… I happen to be a Friedman fan despite hating the Rays, that kid did a lot of damage with no money to spend, and he had to unload a bunch of bad paper that McCourt, Kasten and Wolfe rang up previous

Farhan Zaidi the GM used to work for Billy Beane, so these guys are money ballers, and they’ve made a few missteps along the way, but they did have to unload a lot of dead weight

    • I agree. Freidman has gotten a lot of mileage out of that $1000 car budget he had in Tampa. But I really think he screwed up big time not securing Greinke. They were after him all post season, & then at the last moment, the Diamond Backs make an offer & he signs. They shoulda over paid like everyone else to have 2 of the best pitchers in the game in the same rotation. Kershaw won’t be this good forever……that window won’t be open for long…..now was the time to strike.

  3. Another down year for New York Football. Beningo and Mikey (if he’s back from 2 weeks of gorging) will be giving us expert analysis and tell us what they saw and we didn’t.
Mikey ruled out the Steelers and Seahawks 6 weeks ago as dead in the water. Of course, they’re in the playoffs.
The Giants need to clean house and Coughlin, who is close to the max with Social Security, should go someplace warm and let someone else put up with these gangsters.

    • Hey noogsie… I noticed that Mikey who makes it sound like he hand picked Bowles, is a bit soft on the Jets, if it was Rex he’d be tearing them a new asshole…. Funny that he ruled out the Seahawks and Steelers lol…. I had no idea thanks for the intel

Looks like they bought Tom out, probably right let some younger Coach deal with this new breed

Beningo was depressed today, I wish WFAN wouldn’t have these homers on their shows, I guess it’s kool if your a Jet Met Knick Ranger fan, but they drive me crazy… Today was a fun listen Oh the pain lol…..

  4. I did read this while on the road from Heyman, at least Cashman is trying to steal a top cost controlled pitcher…I guess Houston didn’t want to pay Miller and hand over Velasquez and former No. 1 overall pick Mark Appel… Appel from what I read has had a rough go, not sure I know Velasquez

Kind of glad Miller didn’t get traded for anything less then Lance McCullers, actually I wonder if Cashman could have gotten better then Cessa and Green had he shopped a bit more?

    • That’s what I’ve been saying, Sal. Cessa & Green don’t float my boat. He shoulda waited & shopped some more.

  5. Our rotation is full unless somebody wants to overpay for Gardner or Miller

    • Yeah, it appears to be full……with a lot of question marks. I adhere to the David Cone school of thought on starting pitching. You need 7 starters to start with on your staff for the season. Stash a couple for the shuttle. You KNOW somebody’s going to get hurt.

  6. I hear mB, the NYY staff is like my Uncle’s cars, he has about 6 of them, but none of them can get him to NYC so he takes a bus lol

I think Friedman gave Greinke an offer he knew would be beaten, like Hal gave Cano ($175M), 5 for $150M is a hell of an offer, 6 for over $205M is potential lunacy…

that said, your right for the next 3 yr’s before Kershaw goes to FA, they would have the best 1-2 punch and have a better shot at winning a ring

Your not on an island saying Friedman messed up, I’m on one saying he was calculated, he just got snookered at the last minute… wonder if Casey Close called the Dodgers back to top the D-Backs?

  7. We’ll try to get a new post up tomorrow but we’re busier then an ant hill next to a family picnic this week

Sherman has an article based on winning the winter means nothing… Personally I like the opt outs, Greinke for instance outperformed his 3 yr’s in LA, now the D-Backs who have him for 6 yr’s get to pay $32M per when he’s 36/ 37/ 38 yr’s old… Greinke is a gym rat so good chance he won’t end up like Sabathia, but the league is littered with long term contracts given to pitchers that can’t live up to the back end

Verlander, Santana, Sabathia, Lee, Halliday, Zito, off the top of my head… Price will opt out after 3 yr’s in Boston, and I bet they’ll drive him to the airport, but unfortunately they’ll get his last 3 great seasons
