Yo Got To Be Kidding

The last player on earth I ever expected to give a NY team a home town discout was Yoenis Cespedes

Cespedes obviously wasn’t lying when he leaked to  a person close to his thinking  that he loved playing in NYC, as he left $25M on the table to  play in Flushing and not DC

Actually he was so  desperate to  play in the Big Apple, his agents contacted the Bombers, unfortunately Cash-Brenner slammed the phone down quicker and harder then an  ex-wife after telling her your alimony payment will be a month late

The Mets ended up giving Cespedes and his agents, Brodie Van Wagenen of CAA and Kyle Thousand of Roc Nation Sports, plenty of other goodies — a $27.5 million salary if he exercises his right to opt out after one year, a full no-trade clause, no deferred money. But who imagined the Mets getting this kind of deal on Cespedes at the start of the offseason?

The deal on paper is 3 yr’s $75M, a $25M AAV highest  of any position player this off season, if he does opt out he’ll match ARod’s $27.5M AAV

That  said if he loves NY so  bad, why would he leave?

Unless the new CBA changes it’s policy, Cespedes will have a QO attached to his free agency, with  the added $2.5M incentive the Mets gave him to leave all he’ll have to  do  is beat  2 yr’s $47.5M

He’ll be 31 yr’s old and I can see him getting a 4 for $80M deal, especially if he has a great  season, although he won’t have the I Love NY spin to turn  to

To that end, another source said that Cespedes’ agents, the Roc Nation group, reached out to the Yankees on Thursday to tell them of the slugger’s desire to stay in New York, and ask if they’d be willing to jump in with a three-year offer. All indications are that the Yankees have no such intentions, but the scenario itself is revealing and perhaps encouraging to the Mets.

Anyway  the Cuban missile will have to play out of position in CF, but they  got him for his offense, to  think  if the Yanks weren’t closed for business they could have flipped Gardner and got Cespedes for the same type deal, except Cespedes would have upped Hal’s tax penalty to $27.5M minus the Gardner $13M or $14.5M

Yanks would have had a $255M payroll with Cespedes in LF instead of Gardner.. That’s $66M over the $189M and a tax penalty of $33M…

  2. I was thinking Cashman might play around with Gary Sanchez’s clock, here is a take on the issue… Man it’s gonna suck having Romine as the back up to McCan’t for a few months… the accountants are running wild in the Bomber front office

Gene asks: Should the Yankees manipulate service time for Sanchez? How many days would he have to stay down to gain an extra year of control?

I think there’s a good argument to be made they should. They could certainly justify sending Gary Sanchez down to Triple-A for a few weeks to work on his defense. Sanchez picked up 23 days of service time last year — he wasn’t called up right away in September because of a minor hamstring injury — so add 12 days to that, and the Yankees would need to keep him down for 35 days to delay free agency. They’d have to send him down for about four months to avoid Super Two.

Sending Sanchez down for five or six weeks might not be a bad idea. He’d get a little more time to work on his defense and the Yankees would pick up an extra year of control. Realistically, how much big league playing time would Sanchez get in those six weeks? Six, seven starts? All the early-season off-days would make it easy to keep Brian McCann in the lineup.

  3. Bird played in 46 games, I counted about 53 days of service time give or take… So this starting him a AAA has a few perks for Cashman, it’s not all about he has no utility value, they’re stalling his clock

    172 service days = 1 service year
Players max out at 172 service days/year; seasons usually have 183 service days
Players needs six full years of service to reach free agency
Players need about 2.130 years of service to reach arbitration

  4. Thing that is now true that would have sounded insane two months ago: Cespedes got only $5M more in guaranteed money than Ian Kennedy.

  5. Cespedes is a metric geek’s nightmare… Alderson must be pulling his hair out

  6. One thing for sure about the Cespedes contract. He should be motivated. If he has a big year, he’ll opt out and make a very handsome sum for about 5 years

    • hey Noogsie he can get 4 or 5 yr’s for sure, Mets did very well here, and so did Cespedes

    • I hope you’re right Sally Boy! The next few weeks should tell the tale, but thanks for the sentiment. Hopefully, they do the right thing. I don’t want to have to employ the talents of the great Don B to “help” them make the right decision….
