Back Up The Back Up Plan

with 17 comments

In 24 hours we went from a snooze-fest Monday to an all hands on deck forage in an  effort to  back up  the back  plan now that Greg Bird is out for the season.

Bird was being counted on to  replace a $23M AAV player (Teixeira) in 2017, but before any of that  transpired, he was perched in the shotgun seat as hot cargo on Hal Steinbrenner’s 25th man  shuttle  from SWB to the Bronx

Bird was also on call in case ARod went down, although you’d think moving Beltran  to DH and the fact there are a thousand Brett Gardner’s born every minute, and the Yanks have just about all of them in the minors, they  would bring one of Heathcott, Williams, Gamel, up and insert Hicks / Judge  into  the starting line-up

Sad but true, in this 2016 Free Agent spending chart we see how pathetic Steinbrenner has become in an  effort to  cold turkey his payroll

2015-16-FA-spending-by-team-2-1-16-table1

That’s right kids Hal  didn’t spend one thin dime on any MLB Free Agents, almost unprecedented in the annals of Free Agency… Now he did trade for Castro who is relatively cheap, ($7.5M) especially if he returns to his 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 seasons, and Chapman who  will no doubt make somewhere between $9M and $13.1M, but that’s it

Now the media has put on the brakes posting puff pieces and has feverishly started working to   find Bird’s replacement

Joel Sherman

Sherman  suggests Juan Uribe, not a new name to our Bombers want list  this winter..Maybe I’m delusional, but I remember the Met Mutts talking to Ed Coleman, and if Eddie wasn’t nursing a hang-over, and he meant what he said that morning, he mentioned Uribe cherished his back-up  role as a Met…

Contrary

For some reason all  we heard this off season was Uribe, the soon to be 37 yr old utility infielder wanted a starting gig and an MLB contract..?

The Yankees have not been negotiating at all with Uribe. And according to Buster Olney of ESPN, the Indians have been trying to finalize a deal to make Uribe their regular third baseman. That likely means a major league deal and guaranteed playing time.

Uribe in 15 career yr’s has only played 3 games at  1st base, so he’d be Headley and Castro’s back  up at 3rd and 2nd base.. Sherman like us, thinks moving Castro  to  3rd base isn’t a smart move.

He started to take off when the Genius Joe Maddon  switched him to  2nd base in Chicago, so he’s still in the experimental  stages at the keystone position, plus he’s new to  the AL and NY, now Cash-Brenner wants to hand him a new position to learn as well, Asinine

The portly infielder will take playing time away  from Refsynder, so  we don’t like that, but he will allow Headley who seems to have the Yips throwing a baseball  across the diamond to be the back-up  1st baseman.. Uribe would then play  3rd, he can also  spell Castro who  can  spell Gregorius..

The disclaimer, he’ll  cost some money as a MLB Free Agent..

Hal is acting like the millionaire who is renovating his summer home, but he wants you to  not only salvage the old lumber, he demands keeping  all  the old nails you pull out of the old lumber and re-use them in an effort to  save a few pennies

Chad Vanilla Jennings

Typically, Vanilla who has cuts on his hands from constantly towing the company line, is thinking inside the box here, Ackley, Davis, Alverez, Tyler Austin, ARod.. Most generic bloggers came up  with these names, and of course none of them  will  cost Hal  a MLB contract until  they prove they  can make the team

I’d like to  see Ike Davis come in, but he makes Nick Johnson look like Cal Ripken, and he’s like Bird, a 1st baseman / DH … Plus he might get hurt just  riding that  133 mile trek  from SWB to  the Bronx

Alverez will  also  cost money, and with ARod clogging up nothing but DH, there is no room on the 13 man position player roster for the LH slugger.. He’d have to  agree on a MILB contract and join the shuttle brigade

Ken Davidoff

ken-doll-davidoff

Davidoff, and other’s have opined, maybe the Yanks should offer Teixeira a QO, which potentially could inflate to $17M in 2017.

This move of course is contingent on Teixeira having a healthy and prosperous walk year… Teixeira would be crazy not taking the offer at  37 yr’s old, because who in their right mind would offer him a multi-yr contract for more then that AAV?

If Hal is hell bent on reducing payroll, I doubt the front office makes this move, they’re not only counting the days until  his contract expires, they’re counting the seconds

You figure Beltran $15M, Teixeira $23M and Chapman $13.1M will all  evaporate from Hal’s worst nightmare, his $240M payroll.

If anything the Yanks should try to  flip Tex at the deadline if he’s healthy and producing, and hope the perfect storm is in the vicinity, where said new team is willing to offer Teixeira a QO, plus the Yanks get back a semi  decent pitching prospect

“Let’s be Honest”

Hal  should drop  the fake playoff run baloney, he’s already  blown his cover by not spending a dime  in Free Agency, so who’s he kidding with it’s not in our DNA to  gut the team?

If Tex had a shot at  another ring, plus another contract, he could always commute to his business and charity commitments from whatever city he’s working in.. Most of that  stuff is done in the off season anyway

Axisa

Mikey 2 Chins no doubt stayed up all night chowing on his  Prosciutto di Parma, his Ben & Jerry’s Schweddy Balls Ice Cream Carola, and his vanilla milkshake scanning the internet for potential Bomber Bird replacement’s

Tonight we’ll keep  a close eye on his daily posts and report….

  2. Wow,now we have charts in color-this place is very high class!!! Nice work Sal!! I was upset about Bird being projected playing in the minors this season, now not!!! I just don’t understand why they waited until spring training was about to start for Bird to have surgery, they wasted the entire off season. Just another idiotic move. You all will be glad to know that former Yankee great Brendan Ryan signed with the Nats!! Good luck to them!!

  3. In reference to Sensei’s column in yesterday’s NY Post, I take umbredge. All this talk of how this will/could affect his career going forward is, in my opinion, to quote Art Rust Jr, a lot of poppycock & balderdash! Who’s to say that this injury didn’t impact his power & play this past season? With the surgery, he might be even better than he was last year. I just think they’re trying to stir it up, cuz, what the hell else is there to talk about the Yanks? Free agents? Ha!! Is Lyle Overbay still around???

    • hey mB I think Overbay retired, if he pays the Yanks they might give him a shot, seems the Yanks want players to pay them to play

We can only hope Bird will be OK, you know more about these surgeries then I do so from your finger tips to God’s eyes, let’s hope he’s better then ever…

    • Sally Boy, all I can tell you, is that I’ve had 3 rotator cuff surgeries. The right one 10 yrs ago, and since then, I throw harder without pain, than I did 30 yrs ago!!! Everybody’s different, but from this type of injury, I just don’t see how he doesn’t come back as strong, if not stronger than he was prior. I was kidding about Overbay. Now Mark Reynolds is a guy who can play 1st & 3rd and has some pop. But I believe his dance card is full.

We have nothing to report today fellas, the Post is wall to wall Mets who obviously now own the town.. To the NY media the Yanks have about as much juice as a card game at the local Nursing Home

The only Bomber blurb was this photo of Bird in his hospital bed lol

Mikey 2 Chins is doing retro week posting revisionist history, like watching YES’ Al Yankzeera, the Yanks never lose

  8. http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/mlb-s-qualifying-offer-system-is-stacked-against-low-revenue-clubs-020316

Low revenue teams whining again about the system… They can’t afford to sign lower entry free agents like Desmond and Fowler because thy can’t afford to lose a draft pick… As always the smaller markets want their cake and eat it to

tough shit boys, try paying out $26M in Lux Tax penalties, or having close to $80M in aging players with only 1 Title to show since 2009.. How about the recent FA class the bombers spent almost a half Billion on, where’s the value in Tanaka, McCann, Ellsbury and Beltran?

The Phillies and Cubs are low revenue??? you kidding, those places would be packed every night if they had a good team
this is about 1 per center’s whining to make more money, more profit….

  9. Rosenthal writes

Whether you call it tanking or just plain rebuilding, is it fair that high-revenue teams can add to their advantages by securing protected picks almost by design?

Likewise, is it fair that low-revenue teams must sacrifice a pick to sign a free agent who received a qualifying offer, when merely coming up with the money for such a player is challenging enough for those clubs?

His point, high revenue teams finish higher in the standings so the picks they lose to FA signings are less of a risk… unless your the Red Sox who not only have a huge operating expense, they tanked in 3 of the last 4 yr’s, but still drew enough to not lose their shirt

So they got to pick Benintendi @ # 12 who is like Conforto and should make the show sooner rather then later

The low revenue teams also get money from bigger market’s TV revenues, plus the TV package, and if they do lose a pick, the trade off is they’re making their team better… Any market will draw if their team is better

It’s also a fallacy that the Cardinals are considered a small market, they fill the house every night, so they print money, plus their payroll is a measly $132M at the end of 2015…. That’s $110M less then the Yanks

    $158M less then the Dodgers

how small of a market is Pittsburgh? When they’re good they fill the joint every night , they spend more on payroll, but they make more at the gate

Remember the Pirates were busted for cooking the books, this BS goes on with every small market team

  10. Sal—I have that RN’s Funhouse site bookmarked on my computer. He records every minute of Mikey’s Show and then posts stuff where Mikey contradicts himself or says something stupid. Mikey’s Producer, Brian Monzo got RN’s stuff thrown off You Tube for copyright infringement, so you know he was getting to Mikey. he found a way around it, but is not on You Tuba any longer. I check his site all the time and I am never disappointed. Makes for a shorter baseball offseason for me.
