The Clown Prince

$400M Is Clown Money Bro

In 2018 Bryce Harper will be a very rich 26 yr old baseball player, either the Washington Nationals will  step  up  and extend him beyond the realms of sanity in the next 2 yr’s,

or he hits the free agent market with Scott Boras asking for a potential  15 yr $600M deal..

And “Let’s Be Honest”  the Yankees will be expected to  hand it over, or all hell will break loose.. Hal  Srteinbrenner wants to  cut payroll, get under the Lux Tax, lose the 50% penalty, so the Bombers were the only team in baseball to not dive into  the 2016 Free Agent bonanza.

That’s all  well  and good, I don’t care if they abstain next yr either, but when Harper hits the MLB Shelves in 2 yr’s, Hal better haul the big Piggy Bank to  the negotiating table for the 26 yr old slugger

Mikey 2 Chins tried to play  the Harper free agency down  earlier in the off season, but yesterday he caved in and admitted it was hard to ignore..

Funny because a day  earlier he wrote a variation of his CBS article at the RAB

As for the 3  youngest and biggest sluggers in baseball  and what  they get paid,

Trout, Stanton,  and soon Harper, Trout has the most team  friendly extension,

Trout has 5 yr’s and $140M left on his extension, he’ll be 29 yr’s old when his contract is up in 2020

Harper has 2 more yr’s before he’s a FA and will cost 4 times as much as Trout, he’ll be 26 when he hits the open market, so If Washington doesn’t want to pay him as a FA they might flip him, but they won’t get the return Trout will, based on he’s a rental and Boras is pulling the strings… they will get more then a draft pick though

Stanton’s real money starts in 2018, he’ll have 10 yr’s $295M with a $10M buyout so 10 yr’s $305M left on his 13 yr deal.. My guess Loria tries to flip him soon, he’s now 26 yr’s old

Trading Trout sounds crazy, but Keith I fought the Law ranked the Angels as the worst Farm System he’s ever seen and opined,  how long before they  trade Trout to  replenish it?

Based on what  Trout is owed for the next 5 yr’s, you’d have to bus your entire top 5 prospects, and 2 of the 3 best young team controlled players to LA for the arguably the best player in baseball

Harper being traded in the next 2 yr’s would be a rental, so his haul would be less, but still pretty good, better then  a draft pick if your DC

Stanton I wouldn’t touch unless Miami eats some of that 10 yr $305M left on his 13 yr deal…

Hey Baseball, Save Dis

While the Daily New’ Marbles Fiensand has spent the winter looking for all  the best eatery’s on the upper West Side, Sensei Joel Sherman has come out guns blazing just  about every day

Last night he kicked the Save Stat straight in the teeth with his ahead of the curve article

Death to the save? New thinking guides MLB bullpen revolution

We used to  discuss paying the bull pen back in the days of the old BBT, but never got to round first base, 6 / 7 years ago teams had their closer, and then a bunch of failed starters filling in the blanks

Remember the Joba discussions, reliever or starter? When he came out of the pen early in  his career it was game over… Phil Hughes took to  relieving like a duck  to  water, he was the ultimate weapon in 09

He pitched in 51 games but they  put him in the pen for 44 of those games he was great, his slash line against was brilliant .172 .228 .228 .456

Once the Yanks got greedy  and returned him to  the rotation he was your basic 4 ERA back of the rotation  starter, who yes won 18 games in 2010, but his 4.19 ERA and his 4.25 FIP proved he was a product of run support and his 171 innings a product of the bull pen

Wins for a pitcher in baseball is as bad a stat as The Save!!

Sherman has finally exposed the stupidity of a save stat, Andrew Miller one smart MLBPA union dude has already  come out and said pitch  me where the team needs my talents, he could care less about the Save

I do understand some closers wanting to  compile that stat, relievers are red headed step  children  when it comes to getting paid, but the worm is starting to  turn in their favor

For example, the Yankees gave a four-year, $36 million deal last offseason to Andrew Miller, not knowing whether he would be the setup man or closer. This offseason, three relievers received contracts of more than $20 million – Darren O’Day (Baltimore), Joakim Soria (Royals) and Ryan Madson (A’s) – and none is projected to close.

The dart hitting the  bulls eye in Sherman’s article is

No organization is more analytical than Houston. Yet, last offseason, the Astros spent a combined $31 million on multi-year deals with Luke Gregerson and Pat Neshek. Then, this offseason, they gave a three-year, $18 million pact to a lefty specialist, Tony Sipp, and parted with five players – notably Vincent Velasquez and former No. 1 overall pick Mark Appel – for Phillies closer Ken Giles. That will turn Gregerson into a well-paid setup man.

So much for volatile and fungible.

A team  still needs  1 or 2 innings eaters who can get you a consistent 21 to 23 outs or you end up killing a few guys in the pen.. Having Chapman this yr will help, the Yanks have Miller and Betances to  free lance, and Chapman will be the mercenary looking for a big payday after his 1 yr stint with the Bombers

Yanks can get a pick if the QO is still in baseball, so  the Chapman deal will be a real  fun  1 yr extravaganza if all  3 can  stay healthy

We’ll be out of the office until Monday, stay  warm in the NorthEast and we’ll  check in from the road..

    • Hey Big D! How are ya! Sad to say, ya ain’t getting both of those jewels. If I had a choice, I’d take Trout. For his ability & his heart! But, we have a better chance for Harper. Again, not too shabby. By that time, I don’t want to have to get Jimmy & Carmine to go see Hal to help him find his wallet!!

    • hey fellas, heard about Ike in the wee hours back this morning, too bad was a hoping he’d come to NY… Texas has a bunch of 1st baseman well Fielder sand Moreland, wonder what he’s thinking, with Tex fragile and Bird out he might have gotten to the varsity sooner rather then later…

Probably didn’t want to pay him, Cashman ever hear of incentives.. We’ll find out why maybe I’m picking on Cashman

  6. nothing crazy said he would rejoin his Pittsburgh bench coach Jeff Banister.. how about offering his old friend Benny Franklin and a few of his friends if he makes the varsity that’s more appealing them hanging with an old bench coach

He’ll provide the Rangers with another left-handed option at first alongside Prince Fielder and Mitch Moreland. Citing a team source, Grant noted that “Davis will simply give the Rangers more insurance in the event of an injury to Fielder or Moreland.”

  7. good news from the metric gurus, Yanks could be the surprise team in baseball

    http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-yankees-the-most-underrated-team-in-baseball/

I love this stat, based on the NYY pitchers coughed up

A year ago, 13.6% of the fly balls the Yankees allowed ended up going over the fence, the highest ratio of any team in baseball. Sure, some of that is just the nature of the ballpark they play in, but HR/FB ratio is also one of the least consistent year-to-year variables for a pitcher, even ones who throw half their games in a park that inflates home run rates.

Then Cameron adjusted the analytics, and came up with this

By xFIP-, which normalizes their home run rate, the Yankees pitching staff actually ranked 4th in baseball in 2015 with a mark of 91, suggesting that based on their walks, strikeouts, and ground ball rates, they should have had an above average run prevention unit. If that had been the case, combined with the team’s strong offense, they’d have won 90+ games pretty easily, and we probably wouldn’t be questioning whether or not the 2016 Yankees could contend with mostly the same roster.

Only problem Dave, the NYY are still playing half their games in the Band Box in the Bronx… The only positive is, if Cashman wanted to trade any of these guys another team’s analytics department might like the fact that outside of Yankee Stadium, they ain’t too bad

Anyway always nice to have somebody say something nice for a change

  9. Looks like while I was out of town the Yanks settled with Chapman.. Probably drove home the fact, hey dude if yoiu get suspended where does that leave us? still a $3M raise from last yr in Cincinnati…Good job boys

Chapman and #Yankees settle at $11.325M – $275K over midpoint – avoiding arbitration.

  13. hahaha.. Don’t worry Donny,. French Trost, Levine and Hal won’t let a famous player’s day go by without some sort of Day / celebration, this way they can charge you triple scale for the tickets.. I think goose has a plaque already

Chappy wore #54 so for 1 yr while they rent him, might as well make him happy… He’s from Cuba he has no idea who Goose is, probably thinks he’s an old wrestler
