Baseball and Beyond

Alive at 5?

The big news yesterday  as the NY Yankees position players officially punched the clock on the 2016 season, wasn’t the new Ambassador to MLB ARod, even Itchy Chapman had it easy as the media laid off Chapman target practice for a change.

Mark Teixeira was the  main buzz as Mr Gluten Free for the first  time since last August, strolled, not limped into  town….

Jacoby Ellsbury who is making every MLB pundit’s list as a top  10 albatross contract also  drew some light fireworks as the Doughboy starts his 3rd of potential  7 campaigns in Stripes

On the undercard was Chase Headley who  was as big a disappointment as any underachieving Bomber in 2015.. Joel Sherman thankfully shed some light on the fact that Cashman has gone AWOL on getting a Championship Caliber back-up plan for the extremely inefficient Headley and the hot corner in general.

In no surprise Teixeira claims he wants to play  5 more years, or until he’s 40 yr’s old.. That  was expected, almost every player dons Superman under garment this time of the year, and of course he’d love to  do it for the Bombers..

What was a shock, not one scribe mentioned Hal’s self imposed salary cap, or the fact Greg Bird, Steinbrenner’s version of cheap landscape help should be back and ready to help Cash-Brenner save $23M of that 50% Lux Tax that has Hal out of sorts

Teixeira can  talk all he wants about becoming a lifetime Bomber, but if Steinbrenner was interested in really fielding a Championship Caliber team, David Price and Justin Upton would be in Tampa, Justin Wilson would be in the bull pen, and Pedro Alvarez or  Juan Uribe  would be on the bench

The biggest  question Re: Teixeira, will he earn a projected $17M Qualifying Offer for 2017? If he stays relatively injury free and continues to put up 2015 offensive numbers, a potential  2 to  3 yr deal might be a reality for Tex, just not in the Bronx

With another year of ARod, and McCann’s last 2 seasons 2017 and 18 looking more like a DH then a full time backstop, Teixeira would be blocking Greg Bird, not to mention add crooked numbers to  Hal’s payroll

At the moment it’s a moot point, Teixeira will have to play more then the 111 games like he did  in 2015, yes he was productive, but when NY needed him down the stretch he was limping around on crutches

the past four years have been injury-plagued for the first baseman. He’s played in only 372 of the Yankees’ 648 games, missing 51 games last year, the final 36 due to a fractured right leg after hefouled a ball off his shin.

In the last 4 seasons Tex compiled 123 games twice, 15 games once, and last yr 111… He barely put up a .700 (.711) OPS in 2014, and we know BA isn’t a barometer for sluggers, but hitting .216 / .316 / .398 is really bottom feeding, I don’t care how many HR’s a player hits

The Doughboy wanted no part of answering questions about getting benched, and I don’t blame him.. What’s the big deal, he was stinking up  the joint down the stretch and Girardi glued him to  the pines

I had a better chance hitting Kuechel  then either Ellsbury or Gardner..It’s uncomfortably obvious Gardner is the teacher’s pet so  it’s understandable he would get the nod over the disappointing Doughboy..

Ellsbury at least came to  camp in great shape, his conditioning and effort were never in doubt, this guy just  can’t stay healthy..

As for Headley, we’re not splitting the Atom when  we screamed about a professional utility player that  was a huge drop off  this winter.. I do like the idea of trying Refsynder at the hot corner, although that might be like trying to squeeze Rosie O’Donnell into one of Trump’s beauty pageants

Sherman  does have a good point, Cashman is waiting on what players are out of options as Spring Training kicks into  action

That  said the list of potential acquisitions wasn’t awe inspiring

players such as Philadelphia’s Cody Asche, Milwaukee’s Hernan Perez, Cleveland’s Giovanny Urshela, Miami’s Derek Dietrich, Oakland’s Danny Valencia and Philadelphia’s Andrew Blanco. Former Yankee, Eduardo Nunez of the Twins, might even be a step up, as would Wilmer Flores if the Mets and Yankees could ever make a deal. David Freese also remains a free agent.

I’m a big Refsynder fan  so in a way I’m hoping he somehow finds a spot on the roster or Shuttle.. This notion  that Castro  can be a super utility player is very questionable, he’s learning a new position  as it is, and admits it’s a tough move transitioning from SS to  2nd base

 Today’s  Papel Rant

Mike has done everything this week short of asking Lonn Trost to marry him. Embarrassing Yankee shill. I hope he got paid handsomely.

Well Mikey makes sure he kisses Dolan and Trost’s ass, he needs those suck up favors done when he sits in his 1 per center seats

Joel Sherman of the New York Post feels that the Yankees are making a mistake by relying on Starlin Castro and Rob Refsnyder as backup options to Chase Headley at third base. Neither player has much in the way of experience at the position, he notes, and while Chase Headley played in 156 games last season, he’s played through a herniated disk in his back and would probably be better-suited to play something closer to 130 games per year, in Sherman’s opinion. Sherman lists some options that the Yankees could keep an eye on in Spring Training as teams evaluate players on the fringe of their 25-man rosters. Interestingly, he notes that New York made a minor league offer to Juan Uribe as well before Uribe took a big league offer to serve as Cleveland’s primary third baseman.

  3. David Freese is a free agent 3bman, they could sign him and solve the problem immediately. Its frustrating watching stupid people ruin the franchise.

    • Big D as of the 24th

The Angels never presented David Freese with a formal offer when the two sides were discussing a potential reunion earlier this winter, reports MLB.com’s Alden Gonzalez. Rather, the Angels shifted focus on picked up Yunel Escobar, whose fairly modest $7MM salary was a key to his acquisition, writes Gonzalez. Angels right fielder Kole Calhoun expressed some bewilderment that his former teammate hasn’t hooked on with a club yet, praising Freese as a positive not only on the field but in the clubhouse as well. “I don’t really know what’s going on,” Calhoun told Gonzalez. “It’s kind of crazy. … Good player, great in the clubhouse. It’s as surprising to me as it is to anyone around baseball.”

Wonder what he wants for a contract?.. He most likely wants a starting gig, in Ny he’d be a platoon with Headley… Headley for 3 more yr’s is really a thorn…. Yanks need a Brock Holt type, somebody who can play 3 or 4 positions, this way said player can fill in 5 days a week in an assortment of spots

  4. I say we put the great Don B over at the hot corner to serve as Headley’s caddie. He’s not as fast as he used to be (who is?) but great hands. He could take a leadership role in the clubhouse, & it won’t cost Hal a ton of money. As long as he can fulfill the promiso’s in Donny’s contract. Brownies, food delivery from Arthur Ave after all home games, from Patsy’s one night per home stand, etc. Everybody wins!!!

  5. Hahah. Love the Mikey 21 stuff. If I am not mistaken, his t-shirt “forgive” relates to Arod. Of course, Mikey’s biggest ” give them a pass” has always been Jimmy Dolan and the Knicks who last won when Nixon was president. Probably just coincidental. Yea, right.
