Monday Morning Quarter Back

with 8 comments

We’ll be tied for 2 more days in the studio  so the content will be minimal.

I did see that Nova let Sabathia off the hook with a sub-par performance yesterday, too bad the media didn’t let us know how Mitchell looked in his 2.2 innings of no hit, 2 strike out performance

Mitchell has a 0.84 ERA, but not much  talk  about him replacing both Sabathia and Nova as the  5th  starter.. In fact there is a good chance Mitchell  doesn’t even make the 25 man  roster

MLB logistics are very weird,  the MLBPA makes the players with guaranteed contracts entitled men.. The next two  weeks are supposed too be the real  start  of the season RE: amping  up  the  effort, but with  all  that  guaranteed money coming to  certain guys like Fenway Fats in Boston  and NY Fats in the Bronx, my guess, benching them is a long shot

In Boston  they’re pining for Travis Shaw to  start  ahead of Fenway Fats who came to  camp looking like he ate all the food in Venezuela this winter.

Doesn’t seem to have affected Yogi  “I don’t have a problem competing for nothing” Sandoval who fought back in a Boston Globe interview.. Fats probably doesn’t care if he gets time off his feet, he figures if he competes for nothing and gets nothing, he’s done what he set out to do

As a point of reference to  all  those Red Sox fans who  think Travis Shaw is the next Ted Williams, former Boston  sex slaves Danial Nava (D-Backs), and Pedro Ciriaca (Rangers) are 2nd and 3rd in batting this Spring… Nava is hitting .517, Ciriaca .500

Sherman Keeps Marching

Joel Sherman finally got around to writing about how having to put two DH’s in a line-up  can impact a 25 man  roster.. ARod despite his new and improved persona has the potential  to  clog up  a roster…

Not sure the problem is ARod though, it’s the way  this front office does  it’s business

The fact Cashman can’t count on 4 of the 5 starters based on health, or the fact he can’t find relievers on the farm to bridge to Shreve,  Betances, Miller for the first  30  games means he needs to make the 25th roster spot a revolving door…

Sherman opines the reason  Cashman didn’t sign Uribe was he needed the flexibility a player with options like Refsynder gives him, there might be days where the Yanks need to  carry 13 pitchers…

Sherman also points out how ARod will keep Teixeira,  McCann, and Beltran away from the DH on half days off, and this just  occurred to the Sensie?

Refsynder and Ackley aren’t exactly Saber Metric darlings, they  can both hit, but the Nerds Goose Gossage hates would find their defensive prowess insufficient and far below MLB average

Yes the Bombers are flawed, and yes Hal didn’t want to  spend the money to  fix the problem…That said, while he could have signed a Free agent Starter like Price, and maybe traded for a Swiss Army knife like Prado who is an upgrade defensively over both Refsynder and Ackley, the Yanks still have Sabathia, ARod, Teixeira, McCann, Ellsbury  and Beltran under contract

So lets just  file this under it is what it is, really bad insight into  the future by Cashman and Steinbrenner..

The quick  fix problems they remedied in 08 handing ARod 10 yr’s $275M, in 09  by signing Sabathia,  Burnett, and Teixeira, and in 2014 further impacting the salary flexibility by giving Ellsbury, McCann, and Beltran longish  deals for older players is the real  folly  this 2016 team is burdened with

If your gonna try to rebuild on the fly, but still excite your paying customers by bringing in big ticket items past their primes, then you can’t put a ceiling on your payroll….

Bryce Harper who  will be 26/27 yr’s old when he becomes a free agent might be the biggest Free Agent signing the Yanks make in a long time

But

It’ll only make sense if Bird, Judge, Mateo, Sanchez, Castro, Mitchell, Severino, Kaprelian, and a few of those IFA kids the Yanks  paid for in 2014 pan out

Building your core from within is Hal’s only chance of winning without a plus $200M payroll.. So he better start  to  re-think his no  surrender outlook at the trade deadline, he also needs to get more creative with his contracts, and for Pete Sake if a pitcher entering his early to mid thirties has over 2000 innings on his arm please don’t extend his option no matter how good his walk  yr was

  1. As bad as those extensions were to A-Rod & Sabathia, I think the worst was the signings of the Doughboy, Bubba, & Beltran & Son. In doing so, there was a total lack of foresight of what that would wrought down the road. As we continue to pay for it today. If they had signed Martin, & didn’t allow him to leave, then the Bubba problem wouldn’t have happened. That & the signing of the Doughboy appear to be the most egregious mistakes made. And unfortunately, they are not going away anytime soon.

    • totally agree mB, those 2014 contracts show a total lack of knowledge Re: where the industry was headed

Dombrowski must have spent a restless night.. When you watch this guy he looks like an injury waiting to happen the way he delivers the ball…Smith is their Betances / Miller, if they lose him for any period of time it hurts their pen

they already have Eduardo Rodriguez on the DL

    boy what a bummer lol

  4. how the fuck can there be no broadcast for the Yanks and Mets?????

The Yankees had Rob Refsnyder head to the minor league complex for more work at third base today. He went through infield drills with various coaches and instructors as the team tries to help him become more comfortable at the hot corner. [Brendan Kuty]

Luis Cessa threw his entire 30-pitch bullpen session from the stretch Sunday. Are the Yankees preparing him for a relief role? “No, I didn’t think he threw the ball well from the stretch the other day,” said pitching coach Larry Rothschild. [Fred Kerber, George King]

If you’re interested, here are the day’s minor league lineups (via Kuty). Jorge Mateo almost took a fastball to the face (video via Kuty), and James Kaprielian was 94-97 mph with an 87 mph slider during his start, a scout told Erik Boland.

The Yankees are playing the Mets at home tomorrow night. Luis Severino is the scheduled starter. Right now there is no broadcast for that game. Hopefully YES or SNY pick it up.

  5. http://riveraveblues.com/2016/03/sorting-through-the-45-players-the-yankees-still-have-on-their-spring-training-roster-134905/

pretty spot on for opening day

    20 locks for opening day?

Position Players (11): Dustin Ackley, Carlos Beltran, Starlin Castro, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner, Didi Gregorius, Chase Headley, Aaron Hicks, Brian McCann, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira

Pitchers (9): Dellin Betances, Nathan Eovaldi, Andrew Miller, Ivan Nova, Michael Pineda, CC Sabathia, Luis Severino, Chasen Shreve, Masahiro Tanaka

My guess they’ll be 2 spots open for the pen, but if the trend continues we get Miller, Betances, Shreve, Mitchell, Nova.. None of the 2015 Shuttle relievers have stepped up, so possibly Olsen a Loogy, Yates a Vet?

both Mikey two chins picks, they make sense based on production so far…

The two bench players who join Acklley and Hicks, my guess, Romine and either Refsynder who should get the job or Kozma until he drives Girardi crazy with his anemic bat
