Tune Up Week

with 19 comments

We’re finally just  1 week away  from the real  season starting, but for some reason Spring Training feels like it should have ended yesterday and today should be the kick off..

If MLB wants to  avoid  November, and the owners don’t want to  give up games so  the schedule resorts back to  154, then how about we cut out the last week of exhibition games?

That  said, this week should end the mail in performances  we’ve seen for the last two  weeks, the vets should be into  their final  tune up (something they  should have done last week) and players still looking for work get a handful of games to impress their coaches, GM, and manager

I guess in a way  we’re lucky the real games didn’t kick off this week, Ellsbury is still nursing that  bruised hand, but is just  1 week gonna matter with this guy? Last year he twisted his knee swinging a bat and was useless the rest of the season..

There were two negatives to  yesterday’s scrimmage and one off the field bummer in Yankeeville.

1.The Yanks with their A line-up had a chance to spank Phil Hughes who was pumped up  to face his old team, thinking this was a great  tune up based on who  was playing.. The Bombers made Hughes look like Don Drysdale in the 5-2 loss

6 innngs, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 K, 1 BB, 1 HR…The lone run came on a Gardner HR, the offense looked like they’d rather be searching for Easter eggs then looking for a good pitch to hit, can’t blame them, the game meant next to nothing for every starter

2. Eovaldi looked really good for 5 innings, then his house of cards crumbled in the 6th..  Some of the Twins 4 run 6th inning  was blamed on Betances not covering first  base in time, and Eddie Nunez out hustling his old teammate to  the bag to  keep  the barn door open

That’s fine, but before that play, Eovaldi  all of a sudden lost his focus and his stuff went with it

Through five innings, Eovaldi had allowed one run on three hits, one of which was an infield single. He’d struck out five, walked one and kept a 1-run tie intact. But the sixth inning started with a walk to the No. 9 hitter. Then a double. Then back-to-back singles. Then a fly ball out and another single.

“I’ve got to do a better job just attacking that first hitter and getting on a good page,” he said.

Aside from that one inning, this was another encouraging start for Eovaldi, who had not allowed any hits in either of his first two starts. His one minor league start had been a good one aside from a home run.

Asked what’s stood out to him this spring, Eovaldi didn’t hesitate.

“My split,” he said. “I feel like I’ve had really good action on it. And then my fastball location, I feel like it’s been pretty good so far.”

Eovaldi’s splitter is now a weapon, it’s no longer an experiment, that’s why we’re hoping this box of rocks can keep his mind on his job for 18  to  21 outs and not lose focus, that’s when things start  to  go  haywire for this potential top of the rotation hurler

You can’t teach  100 MPH, and with his secondary pitches coming along, and his age (26) there is no  reason why this guy, and Pineda can’t be the leaders of this staff. Based on his paycheck, Tanaka is the default Ace, but unless he picks up  the pace, he’s nothing but a glorified #3 in any team’s rotation

Eovaldi needs to  do much better then  5.1 innings, 7 hits, 5 runs, last year he had the most run support of any Bomber pitcher so his W/L record was gaudy, but  too many times he’d be sailing along then  just lose it, let’s hope he’s grown out of that annoying trait.

The off the field bummer was expected to  come to  fruition, Rob Refsynder was sent packing back to AAA… Ref was looking like the last bench spot until his 3 days from hell started ironically on Easter weekend

After getting whacked in the face for the second consecutive day  by an errant ground ball you knew it was over for  the Yanks Red Headed Stepchild.. The honchos are saying all  the right stuff, how they like his offense and he just needs more time on the farm to learn his newest role, Swiss Army Knife, but the hand writing is on the wall, this regime doesn’t like his game

The Yanks are deeply embedded in Money Ball / saber metrics, the Gm  and  the manager are all the way in on the “Nerd Stuff” which places tremendous value on the defensive side of the ball

Refsynder plays defense like an NBA All Star team, it’s non-exsistant… It’s not like he doesn’t try, it’s just  the results are the same…We hope Refsynder can hit the cover off the ball, minimize his defensive miscues, and get back to  the varsity once whoever they plant as Headley and Gregarious’ back up starts to wear on Girard’s nerves as said player becomes an automatic out

The media is wondering if the last bench player still isn’t in camp, but the names you hear aren’t any better then what  they have now, Ronnie Torreyes, and Pete Kozma.. The guess here is it’s Torreyes gig to lose this week,  you can tell Girardi  thinks he has a bit more bat  control, but we can’t count out Kozma who is a pretty slick fielder

While Girardi acknowledged it’s possible the Yankees could sign or trade for someone to fill their open utility job, he said chances are it will be either Ronald Torreyes or Pete Kozma.

“It’ll come down to one of those guys,” Girardi said. “… You know, that’s always a possibility (that the team will add someone). My thought is that it will come out of this camp, but it’s a possibility. You never know what’s going to happen at the end of camp.”

Davey Johnson’s offensive mind isn’t running this club, the new math nerds are

Either way the spot reeks of Brendan Ryan, so  the Yanks have upgraded Nothing when it comes to  the all important utility spot

Case in point, last year Boston’s Swiss Army knife Brock Holt made the AL All Star team, Ben Zobrist just  got a 4 yr  $56M contract at the age of 35…

So  if you want to buy the Bull Shit that Sterling and Waldman  were spewing this weekend, that all we’re talking about is the 25th man on the roster, go  ahead, but that’s  real old school, towing the company line horse shit…

We’ll be out of the office all  week, we’ll have to keep track of the games from our phone.. Enjoy the last  week of ST

The door is open, the vent unit is stocked with goodies, feel  free to jump on board

  1. Not a bad idea, Sal. Cut the last week out of ST in order to insure the game doesn’t go into Thanksgiving. Here’s something else they could do that I’ve been advocating for years. Bring back the Double Header in a serious way. I’m well aware those money grubbing owners won’t give up a cent in order to keep the game from leaking into November. So, here’s what they can do. Why not have, say, 12 Double Headers (Day & Night admissions) spread out over the course of the season. But, don’t start the process until May, so they avoid the cold in the northeast. This way, the owners still get to fatten their wallets, & the season is protected from playing in the snow & using a turkey leg as a bat.

  2. So much company line bs from all our announcers, can’t stand it.
Give me Ron Darling please, Bill White too.
Radio games used to be such good company now it is torture.

  3. Good thoughts all around for starting the season earlier and thereby missing Movemberball
Here’s my thought—we have enough warm weather sites and domes to play the first two weeks exclusively at those sites—Toronto–Tampa, and even Baltimore could be used in the AL East—all the other divisions could be fine tuned so that no one has to freeze their ass off in Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota, etc.
so what if a cold weather site team has to be on the road for a few weeks. the season is long and things even out. I’ve looked before at all the alignments in the 6 divisions and someone with some brainpower could work it all out.
It sure as hell beats playing the most important games freezing your ass off in late October and then November.

  4. Seems that Texeira and Ackley had late game heroics and we stole one from Detoit.

  8. Yanks were on YES vs Pirates(CC) and mlb network vs Phils(Tanaka) at the same time, perfect for a veg on the couch. The weather did not cooperate but the Yanks took 2!! CC pitched 4 innings, first 3 looked great, gave up 2 runs in 4th,2nd time around.GeniusJoe said that he did well,so CC got the blessing from the boss, put him down as the 5th starter.Beltran hit a 2 run homer,Arod doubled and was immediately removed as it was raining.Tex singled and was removed,Ellsbury too-they are made of glass, can’t take any chances. Goody gave up 2 more runs-he needs to be gone,it started raining heavier, the game was cancelled,Yanks win 5-4,drive home safely. The game vs the Phils was delayed by rain and in fact was played entirely in the rain until lightning shut it down. Hicks led off the game with a 1 hopper off the center field fence-this guy kills lefties,he better be in the lineup opening day.Ackley hit a 3 run bomb in the 1st-off a lefty,Yanks up 4-0. Tanaka allowed 7 hits,1 run-another runner was thrown out at the plate-1 walk,5 ks in 4 innings. He looked ok,pitched the entire game in the rain.

    • Good run down thanks Big D

      Sounds like Tanaka gets Monday
      CC gets in the rotation

My guess Cessa goes to AAA for depth starter

  9. Man Miller getting hurt sucks, and Mitchell too…..WTF

    March 31, 2016 at 8:16 am

  10. Torreyes is hitting a tick over .300 Kozma .176

Are we splitting the atom saying Torreyes will get the final spot

    March 31, 2016 at 8:25 am

  11. Just read Torreyes made the team

  12. Disappointing last minute injuries. These guys have to stay on the field in order for the Yankees to win.
Nice article about Cadillac Cano in today’s paper. He has been tearing it up this spring and appears to look better than he has in years. He has hit 7 dingers this spring. He seems highly motivated.
Mostly importantly, he stays in the lineup. He still has a ways to go on the contract, but contrary to many sites, like RAB, I still wish we had signed him. When compared to what they paid Ellsbury, it’s a horrible
decision. I am not over it yet.

    March 31, 2016 at 8:49 am

    • Hey noogsie, Cano out for redemption, that’s quite a spring training

Mitchell out 3 months, fractured toe, that’s devastating….

      March 31, 2016 at 11:09 am

    • That’s terrible news, Sal!!! We’s in trouble.

      March 31, 2016 at 11:32 am

  13. yes brutal news mB.. Just read Yates gets the last spot so the pen is Miller, Betances, Shreve, Nova, Yates, Barbato, Cessa…

Not sure Ryan Hatch has this right, equating what Farrell and Dombrowski did in Boston, benching Sandoval in favor of Shaw, with what NY couldn’t bring themselves to do with Sabathia and Nova

Nova did pitch to an ERA that was 1 run less then Sabathia, but Nova didn’t exactly light it up all Spring.. He had a nice 6 inning stint in his last outing vs the Braves, but Nova disappears in games faster then a July snow, and has a history of always being an enigma

The better argument that channels Shaw and Sandoval is Mitchell and Sabathia, Mitchell like Shaw is young and works for the minimum, out pitched everybody in NYY camp before getting hurt and he wasn’t even in the competition narrative…Mitchell did win the Adam Warren spot, which was a high leverage position in the pen, but he wasn’t considered for a starter spot

I also think that while Sabathia has zero chance of being traded 1. he stinks, 2. he’s owed $50M, 3. he has a no trade, Sandoval could possibly be flipped, and not handing him the starting job has to upset the player, and the agent..
That in itself would make him want to bolt Boston, now it’s just a matter of connecting the dots on a deal..

    April 2, 2016 at 9:16 am

  15. interesting situation, our bass player knows Mitchell’s mother / family, they’re from the same area in North Carolina

    April 2, 2016 at 9:18 am

  16. still no designated starting line-up for Monday.. Girardi might have to pull a Shaw / Sandoval, and bench the guy who’s grossly overpaid…

Then again will he embarrass is $153M man? And do we care if he does?
