Team NY Beats Team Canada

with 18 comments

The Yanks slipped past Team Canada 3-2 in a white knuckler battle in Canada.. It was a total team effort with a gold star  going to  the bull pen after they hurled 4 hitless and scoreless innings,

The Nibbler

In the beginning it wasn’t pretty watching TJ Tanaka, and at times it was completely frustrating, especially  Tanaka’s first  3 innings.. It took him 54 pitches to  escape the first  two innings, he was pitching smart, which means he wasn’t leaving meatballs hanging over the plate, he  just  wasn’t  efficient, and it’s safe to  say  he was nibbling at the paint, but Canada wasn’t biting and it was driving up  the pitch count

The Jays hung 2 runs on TJ in the 3rd after Tanaka hit Pillar the lead off batter, it was frustrating seeing the HBP with  two  strikes on Canada’s center fielder.. I will  say he didn’t try to nibble after that misstep, but  Donaldson smoked a single on the 1st two seamer he saw that got too much plate..

Tanaka then  hung a meatball  slider that Joey Bats smoked into  the right centerfield gap, a ball Ellsbury should have had in his back pocket but the misplay resulted in a 2 run RBI double that afforded Team Canada a 2-0 lead

Tanaka walked to  the dugout down  2-0 having thrown  71 pitches, and the way Girardi baby’s these guys it looked like the Bomber starter  was destined for a 4 inning night

A 7 pitch 4th helped prolong TJ’s night, Tanaka coughed up  a lead off single in the 5th but he also induced 2 ground ball outs and a dazzling punch out of Encarnacion to  end his first  visit to Canada

5 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs, 4 BB’s which  didn’t help  the WHIP King’s WHIP stat, and 6 K’s… The good news he didn’t give up  any HR’s, and he actually made it through  15 outs, something I never thought would happen  after his 3 inning 71 pitch nibble fest….

Tanaka has had success vs the powerful Team Canada line-up, which is predominately RHB heavy, and the controlled indoor climate  at Rogers Centre was a welcome relief from the nasty April  weather the Yanks have encountered in their first  6 games

You would think that, Masahiro Tanaka, who hasn’t been great with keeping the ball in the ballpark (allowed 28 homers last year), would not be a great matchup versus the Jays. However, in seven career games versus Toronto, Tanaka has held them to a .584 OPS, allowing only 7 walks while striking out 48

Tanaka kept Team Canada off balance, you just  want to  see him do it with less pitches thrown

Yanks Build A Lead and make Canada Pay For It

Aaron Sanchez looks like a very good young pitcher, the 23 yr old was inserted into  the rotation after spending the 2015 season as Osuna’s set up man

His stuff, as pointed out by the amazing David Cone has “natural late life to it” but the Yankee bats were very patient in the 2nd inning when they took  a brief 1-0 lead.

McCann walked.
Beltrán grounded out to pitcher, McCann to second.
Headley walked.
McCann safe at third, Headley safe at second on throwing error by pitcher Sanchez.
Castro grounded out to second, McCann scored, Headley to third. 1 0
Gregorius grounded out to second. 1 0

So  the Bombers used ABC baseball  to  scratch  across their first run..Both Tanaka and Sanchez settled in, Girardi much to my disagreement yanked his starter after 91 pitches..

John Wayne Gibbons allowed Sanchez to pitch  into  the 6th inning and it backfired after Bubba McCann  belted his 2nd HR of the yr, a 411 foot bomb to  right center field that  tied the game at 2-2

At this point it became a battle of the pens, and on paper even with Chapman in Tampa, the Yanks have the advantage

Johnny Barbato who  came to  the Bronx in that Machine Gun Kelley trade breezed through the 6th inning, 16 pitches, one walk, 3 ground ball outs

The Yanks were now into  the earner portion of their bull pen, and they  staked Shreve Betances and Miller to  a 3-2 lead in the 7th inning, while Barbato  was in line for the “Vulture Win”

Cecil relieved Sanchez. 2 2
Headley singled to left. 2 2
Castro walked, Headley to second. 2 2
Gregorius sacrificed to third, Headley to third, Castro to second. 2 2
Ellsbury singled to shallow left, Headley scored, Castro to third. 3 2
Gardner struck out swinging, Ellsbury stole second. 3 2
Chavez relieved Cecil. 3 2
Rodriguez grounded out to second. 3 2

Headley who had his best game of this young season on both  sides of the ball led off the 7th  with  a single.. Castro coaxed a BB, Gregarious laid down a sac bunt, and Ellsbury hit a soft bloop over the head of Tulowitzki and in front of Saunders to give the Bombers their 3-2 lead

After Shreve allowed a 2 out walk  to Donaldson, Joey Claps brought in Betances to pitch to Joey Bats, and the big kid punched out the  Flipper on a knee buckling hook to  die for

D-Bet blew threw the 8th inning with relative ease

Encarnación fouled out to first.
Tulowitzki struck out swinging.
Colabello struck out looking.

Miller was just  as good blowing away the Jays bottom of order in record time to  close it

Saunders struck out looking.
Martin grounded out to third.
Smoak hit for Goins.
Smoak struck out swinging.

This was a gratifying win, I think  you wanted to  see Tanaka go  a little deeper into  this game, but Barbato who has been a huge surprise picked up  the slack, and Shreve handed the ball  to Betances just  as the meat of the order was coming up

Ellsbury, Gardner, A-Rod and Teixeira – went 2-for-16 combined,  So far  these guys are hitting a total combined 18-for-87, 2.07 BA

Somehow the Yanks are 4-2 with the top of the order pretty much smelling up  the joint

The Bombers were a putrid 1 for 10  with RISP

Yankees RISP: 1-10 (Rodriguez 0-2, Gregorius 0-1, Castro 0-2, Ellsbury 1-2, Gardner 0-2, Teixeira 0-1)
Team LOB: 8

  1. From Lo-Hud

With his second home run tonight, Brian McCann has now scored 10 runs in five games this season. He scored 10 runs in 17 games last April.

This is the first time since July 21-27 that Tanaka has gone consecutive starts without pitching at least six innings. CC Sabathia remains the only Yankees starter to get through six this season.

On the bright side about Tanaka, he’s held opponents to two earned runs or less in five of his past six starts dating back to last season. His four walks tonight tied a career high.

The Yankees got only their third win in their past nine games against Toronto.

Three of the Yankees four wins this season have been come-from-behind victories, and they’re now 4-1 against right-handed starters (they’ve seen all righties since the Dallas Keuchel opener).
The Yankees’ pitching staff has not allowed a home run in its past 19 innings.

Hadley actually gave the Yanks what they paid him to do and couldn’t last yr.. Let’s hope that trend continues

  2. Let’s hope the pen can get another night out of Barbato Shreve Betances and Miller before Girardi rests them

same with the top of the order, Castro and Gregarious can’t carry the team all yr..

  3. As much as I hate to say it about fat slob Mac…hes been terrific so far this year. Saw on twitter his foot is ok I’m sure he’ll get a day off now but good to start off the new year beating Toronto. Last year they beat the breaks off the yanks all the time. I hope the good pineda shows up tonight not the dipshit that gets hammered to hell n back

  4. hey Ricky, yes I agree McCann has been terrific, and yes 13-6 was an ass whipping last yr, remember the days when Toronto couldn’t win a game in NY…

Yanks should try to take tonight’s game vs Happ, Stroman might be a lot tougher to deal with on Thursday

  5. Need to bring back the Swishawk for JA Crapp. He used to tee off on him lol. Getting 2 of 3 is nice and late last year shutting down the yankees was not hard. Stroman is the ace but I am not sold on him. Baltimore looks like the greatest team ever undefeated. Need them to come back to reality.

    • Yes I bet you were happy to hear the Yanks are giving Swisher a shot
Seems like Parmalee is the only guy in his way depth wise

  6. Oh no yesterday Honest Mike was doing baseball, it was at least listenable
Now we have to deal with his know it all
    Football draft
He’s gonna act like he knows about every player in the draft

And the hockey starts tonight so we’ll have to endure with more Honest Mike BS

    April 13, 2016 at 1:41 pm

    • Honest Mike Is trying to get football draft talk on a day when the Mets are on a 4 game losing streak lol

The Mets are doomed, Francesa picked them to win the East

  7. Tanaka is japanese for nibbles. He was putting the batters and audience to sleep, afraid to throw it over the plate. Yankee bullpen has been incredible but with the starters only going 5 innings, they will be fried shortly-Shreve has been in 4 of the 6 six games!! Yanks should be glad they are not playing the O’s now, they are just on fire. The sux big acquisitions(Price,Kimbrel) got shit on!!-lol Couldn’t happen to a better team! The Hollywood Reporter had a very good article on Francesa-sorry I don’t have a link,I am technologically challenged. Back after this

    April 13, 2016 at 3:13 pm

    • Tanaka is japanese for nibbles

I’ll look for that Francesa story Big D…

      April 13, 2016 at 5:03 pm

  8. Joey Day Care is at it again, MCCann (hurt) Gregarious and Gardner on the pines vs the LHP

Looks like he flip flopped Castro and Headley

Should be interesting to see if Torreyes continues his Solarte imitation, I think I read somewhere, he’s Eduardo Nunez with better defense

    Jacoby Ellsbury CF

    Aaron Hicks LF

    Alex Rodriguez DH

    Mark Teixeira 1B

    Carlos Beltran RF

    Starlin Castro 2B

    Chase Headley 3B

    Ronald Torreyes SS

    Austin Romine C

    April 13, 2016 at 5:02 pm

  9. Here’s Big D’s tip on the Francesa article.. Good photo for photo shopping lol

    April 13, 2016 at 5:05 pm

    • Girardi should have benched Arod

      April 13, 2016 at 8:09 pm

  10. Nova in to relieve in the 8th ??
This is what we have to look forward too?
Gives up a lead off double,, Good job, Ivan the Terrible,,

    April 13, 2016 at 9:33 pm

  11. 7-2 now,, Good job Joey Claps,, Nova is a stopper for sure,
Rothschild hasn’t moved in 5 innings,
    Hate it

    April 13, 2016 at 9:44 pm

    • Yanks came into this game leading the world in ERA for relievers
Nova just wanted them to fall back into the pack lol
Nova is a long man, but the residual affect of too many 5 inning starts
And no Chapman so the other middle guys weren’t available

Unfortunately when Chappy gets back somebody will get sent down and it won’t be Nova

On a good note Torreyes looks really good

      April 13, 2016 at 9:56 pm

  12. Pineda gets a QS, a cherry pickers delight

Nova single handily crushes that touted reliever ERA the Yanks built up over the 1st 8 games

The fact he’s a starter maybe it won’t count lol

Good game offensively by Elldbury Torreyes and Beltran

Wonder if they sit ARod and DH McCann tomorrow

    April 13, 2016 at 10:40 pm

  13. Article from Marchand saying if Arod doesnt hit hes worthless then gets defensive on twitter saying its early…..I guess they have to have something to complain about. Beltran was lost in April last year and bounced back but Alex has not really looked good, had some good at bats but for the most part looks like he needs to spike up again. I dont know how JA Crapp can shut down this lineup but when Tex hit the home run off storen I got excited but then Nova came in and did a bang up job. Hope Nasty Nate does get hammered to hell n back like he always does tonight.
