A Change of Pace

Break Up  the Yankees, please, lol

Just kidding, but who  were those guys in gray NY laundry  last night in Baltimore?

4 for 12 with RISP,  10 hits, 3 of them  doubles, they’re lead off batter went 3 for 3 with  2 BB’s, their catcher knocked in 3 runs and picked up  2 hits.. They  scored 7 runs and  won a game without hitting a HR

The Yanks  were younger at DH, and in Right field!

OK so  only 1 yr younger at DH and that  youngster in right field still  can’t buy  a hit, Hicks went 0-4, and is batting .066..

The Yanks went to  the mattresses last night  and Luca Brasi’d  Buck Showalter and his gang of 9, taking them out 7-0

They  settled some of their family business, got some payback after the scorned O’s manager ordered  the Joan Collins of grounds keepers, Nicole Mcfadden, to  tarp  the field so  the Yanks couldn’t take BP on Tuesday night. The ball breaker there, it wasn’t even raining, so Bucky O, per usual, was up  to his old tricks hosing the Yanks and Fredo Girardi

I don’t want to  take anything away from Alex Rodriguez, he’s been Father Know’s Best, Mr Baseball, and  The Dalai Lama all rolled into  one since he’s been back from his 2014 baseball incarceration, and despite only hitting .194, he does lead the Jurassic Yankees in HR’s with 5, RBI’s with 12, and pep talks 25

One of the real problems facing this 2016 Bomber squad is the sad fact  they’re counting on  a 40 yr old DH to  carry the club! Mistake number 2, they’re also counting on two of Rodriguez’ senior citizen pals, Teixeira (36) and Beltran(39) to be their version of Murders Row

These three muskateers should be complimentary pieces to  a 25 /40 man roster, not their life support, last night some of the over paid, underperforming One Percenters, CC Sabathia,$25M AAV, Ellsbury ($153M) and McCann ($85M) finally showed up and carried their weight..

Two other underlings being extremely over compensated, Gardner and Headley, who  are both holding the Bombers up on 4 yr $52M ransoms, also pitched in some… Gardner 1 for 4 with  an RBI, Headley finally got a base hit, still no  extra base knocks, but at least he didn’t take an O-fer

The Yanks finally won a game snapping a 6 game losing streak, so some of the pressure has been relieved, but the  architectural design of this CashMan / Steinbrenner built squad still  resembles the infrastructure of a War Torn City

That problem is reserved for another day, this morning we celebrate a much needed win, one that showed a glimmer of hope but the Yanks are still in the AL East cellar, 6 games behind Boston, 3.5 games behind 4th place Tampa Bay, but at  9-16, (ouch a .360 winning %),  they  avoided the potential of heading back to  the Bronx to  face Boston on Friday 10 games under .500

Tanaka and company can make it an  extravagant 2 game winning streak if they  can steal another victory from their nemesis Buck Showalter and his 2nd place team tonight

A+ Outing  for CC

The offense finally broke out, but the star of this 9th  victory of the season was the reformed CC Sabathia, who  tossed an unmitigated Gem

7 innings, 6 hits, No runs, 2 BB’s, 6 K’s, No HR’s,  99-62 pitches, and he now has an ERA under 4 at  3.81

Damn, Sabathia looked good, I thought a 2015 Dallas Kuechel had some how slipped into  a Sabathia fat suit and took the wheel of this out of control Yankee bandwagon, making the O’s look like the Yanks every-time they  face Keuchel, helpless

The key to Sabathia’s success was his revitalized change up, a pitch he learned a long time ago from the now Boston pitching coach Carl Willis while the two of them  worked for the Cleveland Indians

“It started early and we just went with it,” Sabathia said of the changeup. “I got in trouble and was able to make pitches with the changeup and two-seam fastball.

Sabathia offered up  28  change ups,( intel from Bryl Cream Curry) the most he’s thrown it since 2012 and the O’s went hitless off that offering.

The Beltway Bombers flailed away at the change up, which in turn maximized the well  placed 88 / 89 MPH fast ball, and created deception for the backdoor slider that had as much life as any pitch  Sabathia has thrown in yr’s…

Not that it matters, but Pitch FX has a little different intel on Sabathia’s pitch arsenal, but the results were the same.. Maybe Curry got overly excited, and you can’t blame him, the YES talking heads Bourbon Bob and Bryl Cream Curry have been  channeling Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee singing the blues every night for a week now

Pitch Statistics as coded by PITCH INFO
Pitch Type Velo (Max) H-Break V-Break Count Strikes / % Swings / % Whiffs / % BIP (No Out) SNIPs / % LWTS
SI (Sinker) 89.9 (92.4) 10.02 6.52 29 19 / 65.5% 14 / 48.3% 1 / 3.4% 4 (2) 15 / 60.0% -0.04
CH (Changeup) 84.0 (85.5) 8.90 5.03 21 13 / 61.9% 13 / 61.9% 8 / 38.1% 4 (0) 9 / 52.9% -1.95
SL (Slider) 80.0 (82.1) -4.58 0.45 22 12 / 54.5% 7 / 31.8% 1 / 4.5% 3 (1) 9 / 47.4% 0.38
FC (Cutter) 88.4 (91.2) 2.41 6.49 27 18 / 66.7% 14 / 51.9% 4 / 14.8% 7 (3) 11 / 55.0% -0.71

As we can see, Sabathia mixed all  4 of his pitches with regularity, the slider subtracted velocity the most, the life on his change up created the most havoc for the Buck O’s

The sinker change up  combo induced 3 double plays

“The double plays made all the difference in the game,” Sabathia said.

DP: 3 (Gregorius-Castro-Teixeira 2, Castro-Gregorius-Teixeira).

Jones grounded into a 6-4-3 double play in the 3rd inning, Reimold grounded into a 4-6-3 double play in the 4th inning, and Trumbo rounded out the DP hat trick by grounding into  another 6-4-3 double play in the 6th, all back breaking plays for the O’s

It may have seemed like overkill but Joey Day Care needed to  summon one of his K-BMC trio with a 7-0 lead… Personally I would have started the inning with Betances, get him back on his horse after some shoddy appearances in his last 3 outings,   with 9-1-2 coming up in the 8th inning

Of course my concept is extreme overkill, but that’s how I felt at  the time…

I wanted to  1). see Betances get back his mojo, and the 7 run lead gave him an extreme cushion.. 2). I wanted Girardi  to keep the Yanks foot firmly planted on Buck’s neck, don’t give them  even  a glimpse of life coming into  tonight’s rubber game

Girardi  did what  any manager would do, he inserted one of his underbelly relievers Kirby Yates, who started out like a house on fire, then immediately tried to burn down  the 7 run lead…

Flaherty struck out swinging. 7 0
Rickard walked. 7 0
Machado doubled to left, Rickard to third. 7 0
Jones walked. 7 0
Betances relieved Yates. 7 0
Davis struck out looking. 7 0
Trumbo fouled out to third.

Two  walks and a double loaded the bases with Chris Davis coming up, damn, Yates was awful, I felt bad for the guy, he looked miserable  talking to himself as he watched from the dugout

With a little help from the home plate ump, Betances punched out Davis on 3 pitches, all knuckle curve balls..

Three pitches later  he got Trumbo to pop up  to third base, completely zapping any thought of a momentum  swing

“You have to be able to turn the page,” said Betances, who had given up a homer in each of his previous three outings, two of which won games for the Red Sox last weekend at Fenway Park. “I learned that from Mo [Mariano] Rivera and [David] Robertson.”

Chicken Shreve tossed a 1-2-3 9th inning, with two punch outs to  secure the W…

Offense Breaks Out

The offense led by Ellsbury, McCann,  and Gardner finally broke out from under this consistent 2 runs a game death  grip when  they plated 3 runs in the 6th and 4 runs in the 8th

The 6th Inning

Headley struck out swinging. 0 0
Ellsbury singled to right. 0 0
Ellsbury stole second. 0 0
Gardner singled to center, Ellsbury to third. 0 0
Beltrán hit sacrifice fly to center, Ellsbury scored. 1 0
Teixeira walked, Gardner to second. 1 0
McCann singled to right, Gardner scored, Teixeira to third. 2 0
Castro safe at second on throwing error by pitcher Wilson, Teixeira scored, McCann to third. 3 0
Hicks grounded out to second.

The Sledge Hammer dropped in the  8th Inning

Beltrán doubled to deep center. 3 0
Teixeira walked. 3 0
McCann doubled to deep right, Beltrán and Teixeira scored, McCann to third advancing on throw. 5 0
Bundy relieved McFarland. 5 0
Castro grounded out to shortstop. 5 0
Hicks struck out swinging. 5 0
Gregorius singled to center, McCann scored. 6 0
Headley singled to shallow left, Gregorius to second. 6 0
Ellsbury walked, Gregorius to third, Headley to second. 6 0
Gardner hit by pitch, Gregorius scored, Headley to third, Ellsbury to second. 7 0
Beltrán grounded out to catcher

The Yanks most likely will bring up  a position player, maybe Gamel, tonight after Gardner took a pitch off the elbow.. X-Rays we’re negative but no doubt he’ll need a few days off

Tanaka could help make this a 2 game winning streak tonight, but the Yanks will be facing Gausman who can be a troublesome  day  at the office.. Let’s see if the worm has turned for this team, or did we get nothing more then a brief reprieve from the mediocrity that  seems to have a stranglehold on this 2016 team

the Whole 9

    • donny, Girardi is going nowhere, neither is CashMan,
      you’re stuck with these nerds…

.If you want these guys jettisoned then root for 65 to 70 wins, even then I bet Hal waits until he sees what CashMan’s farm system does for a few yr’s

Hal is a know nothing nerd, and these two ball and chains are all he knows….

I’d keep up the picket line to get them outta here though, but these wins soothe the other savage beasts

a two game winning streak will have both Cashman and Girardi heading to the Hall of Fame….Baseball unfortunately is a 6 month take my daily temperature game, and a win is as good, or bad as a syringe full of dope

We’re stuck between wanting them to win and wanting them to lose, tough spot to be in lol

  2. the good thing is a few good games strung together can make some of these batting lines look presentable

Ellsbury went 3-for-3 with two walks to raise his season batting line from .247/.293/.366 (83 wRC+) to .271/.327/.396 (104 wRC+).

Hicks is having as ton of trouble with the bat, but I feel a lot better with him in the Out field, and he’s not breaking out of his hitting doldrums sitting on the bench..

As Two Chins pointe out Hicks stopped a runner from scoring from second without even making a throw.

Jacoby Ellsbury who had three hits, two walks, two stolen bases, and scored the first run of the night. All of a sudden he’s hitting .271 with a .327 on-base percentage. He was having a rough start, but his numbers are starting to really climb.

    Sell High CashMan

  3. Today’s prose was off the charts! So many great lines, Sal! Bourbon Bob & Bryl Cream Curry channeling Sonny Terry & Brownie McGee by singing the blues every night. Priceless! Tonight, we need a pre-game inspirational speech from Frank Pentangelli to the team. He’d fire everybody up with his “…this is a street thing! Let’s get em now, while we still got the muscle!” Then we need TJ to throw a gem & the lineup to channel a TBT!

    May 5, 2016 at 9:31 am

    • mB you might have to fly down and sub for Frankie… Glad you enjoyed Sonny and Brownie….Sonny and Brownie, the battle is over but the war goes on.. one of Donny B’s favs

      May 5, 2016 at 9:51 am

  4. my favorite Sonny and Brownie story, Sonny finally went blind, and Brownie never wanted to be upstaged by him so he’d walk him out on stage, and in a lot of those chitlin circuit joints the stages were obstructed by posts…. Brownie would sit him right behind a post and position himself in the center of the stage

poor bastard never knew he was getting hoodwinked.. they don’t call it the blues for nothing

    May 5, 2016 at 10:00 am

    • Too funny! I have no problem going down there and doing my best impression of Franki Five Angels to jack up the team! I’ll bring Ciccio to make it official!

      May 5, 2016 at 3:12 pm

  5. One of your Don’s faves for true Sal,,
    Needs double drumming tho lol

    May 5, 2016 at 10:34 am

    • one drummer is enough trouble, two is a nightmare

      May 5, 2016 at 10:55 am

  6. Boy the Met Mutts get feisty when anybody critiques one of their pitchers.. take it easy boys, just opinions on some millionaire jock who wouldn’t give you the time of day if his life depended on it

These dopes are laughed at by the jocks when they get in the clubhouse….Dipietro said about Francesa in public what they all say behind his back……

    May 5, 2016 at 11:00 am

  7. Must have fallen asleep in a hot tub time machine bc Cant Count on looked good!

    May 5, 2016 at 11:39 am

    • yeah I think we’re all shocked, he did look like he wanted a pop or two after the game, hope he stayed clean

      May 5, 2016 at 3:15 pm

  8. Glad they finally won, actu ally looked like a major league team. Dipietro called Big Mike Gordie Chow-lol.

    May 5, 2016 at 12:29 pm

    • hahahahaha

      May 5, 2016 at 2:53 pm

  9. Brett Gardner’s sore elbow has opened an opportunity for last year’s breakout prospect Ben Gamel

Looks like Gamel is up, per this lohud report

    May 5, 2016 at 3:42 pm

  10. Francesa aka Gordie Chow wouldn’t know Gamel from Gandhi…He pays no attention to Spring Training, and the only prospects Gordie Chow knows are Mateo, Sanchez, Bird, Judge, Severino, and Kepener hahaha

I think his bozos in the booth should tell Gordie it’s Kaprelian not Kepener

It’s hard to be a genius for about 6 sports, boy am i gonna miss this gas bag when he retires

    May 5, 2016 at 3:57 pm

  11. Hell of a pick by torreyes and Tex

      Neither do the O’s fans

      May 5, 2016 at 7:30 pm

  12. Whatever they fixed in Tanaka’s elbow is working
The kid’s stuff has a lot of movement

59% ground ball rate has to be a conscious effort
It didn’t take him long to adjust to all the HR’s he gave up lady yr

Hicks with a 65 hopper base hit
Then DD kick over the milk bucket

    May 5, 2016 at 7:39 pm

    • Man this kid Gausman looks like he’s finally figured it out

I hope he makes a few mistakes

      May 5, 2016 at 7:45 pm

  13. Never thought Castro would make it to 3rd
    Yanks pushing the envelope

      May 5, 2016 at 8:12 pm

  14. Yanks have held Os scoreless for 16 innings

    May 5, 2016 at 9:00 pm

    • Holy schit Ackley looked like Trout light on that play

Betances lucked out coulda been the 4th Tater in his last 5 games
      Or a game winning double

I think two of the yanks out fielders are hitting under .100

Britton can’t find the plate Castro really flicked up

      May 5, 2016 at 9:41 pm

  15. Are you fucking kidding me ???
    3rd base coach asleep?

    May 5, 2016 at 9:28 pm

    • Castro got over anxious

being in scoring position for the Yanks is a kiss of death

Texy having a rough walk yr

      May 5, 2016 at 9:44 pm

  16. Castro had a history of bone head plays while he was on the Cubs-its nothing new with him

    May 5, 2016 at 9:33 pm

    • We know where this game is headed
It’s starting to circle the drain

      May 5, 2016 at 9:50 pm
