Cain’s Almost Able

with 18 comments

Like David Ortiz last week, Joe Girardi insisted on pitching to Lorenzo Cain and the Royals center fielder almost single handily ended the Yankees 1 game winning streak by belting 3 HR’s  and driving in 5  runs

In one of the strangest games of the season, the Yanks, despite Cain’s Ruthian performance, came back 3 times to  polish off the sleep  walking World Champion Royals 10 -7

Strange Brew

On a night where both Kelvin Herrera and Andrew Miller gave up  their first  runs of the season..

Tanaka coughed up 6 runs,   3 HR’s, one more then he’s given up in his first  6 starts.

The normally air tight defensive juggernaut Royals committed a balk that led to them losing  a lead in the 7th inning,  and a costly  error by their Gold Glove SS in the 8th that opened the door for the Yanks to plate 3 runs breaking a 7-7 tie off the previously invincible Herrera

Finally Shotgun Chapman came in with a 3 run cushion in the 9th to  close it out, the final out, coming against Cain who couldn’t quite square up a 101 MPH fastball, popping it up  to 2nd base, and the Yanks finally won the damn game

The W gives the Bombers their 4th  win in the first  5 games of this home-stand against  two Brand name teams, first place Boston,  and the curiously lethargic Royals..

Not to  take anything away  from the  two Bomber victories, but KC looks like they  haven’t gotten in rhythm just yet, almost 25 players, 25 cabs, if that’s even  possible for the team  that has procured the label  as the most balanced and complete squad in Baseball

One thing we have noticed, their starting pitching is horrendous, perhaps it gets better over the next two  games when Ventura who pitches tonight vs Pineda, and Ian Kennedy, the former Bombers  Young Gun goes against Eovaldi on Thursday

But I’m seeing super athletes like Cain misplay fly balls, errors by Escobar, and just  a general ho-hum speed to  their game.. Perhaps the World Champs are rope-a-doping their opponents at  the moment, it’s a long season, and last yr the Yanks were  leading baseball in everything until  the 2nd half when  they  crashed and burned

Tanaka BluesDay

Tanaka was finally afforded some runs, 7 of them, but the Bomber Ace couldn’t take control of the game.. Three times he blew a lead the make shift B list line-up handed him, it was weird to see him go in the tank, mostly thanks to Cain who  got him twice for Taters.

He did secure 21 outs but in the process he had some ugly numbers

7 innings, 7 runs, 6 hits, no BB’s, 4 K’s, 3 HR’s 3.11 ERA

What he did well  was get you through  7 innings on only 79 pitches, a very strange game by Tanaka

“The slider was not good,” Tanaka said. “It was up and it wasn’t moving much. That wasn’t good. And for the other pitches, I think they were a little bit higher than I wanted to be, so that wasn’t so good also. … I think if you look back at some of the previous games, I think I got away with some mistakes, but that wasn’t the case today. I think every mistake I made was capitalized.”

This was Tanaka’s first  ever appearance vs the Royals, mostly RHB line-up, but they  swing early, make contact, and Cain was off the charts with a bat in his hand.. Tanaka didn’t have his A game, but regardless he’ll have to make the adjustment if he faces this group  again, or maybe it was just  a bad night..

Ain’t It Peculiar

Even more peculiar was how this Bomber line-up with-out Ellsbury, ARod and Teixeira generated 4 comebacks with 5 through 9 in the order being Ackley, Hicks, Gregarious, Headley and Gamel.. Three of them hitting way below .200, and the other two under .230

The B Team  Quintet managed to  go 6 for 15, Gamel  was the only player in that  group to not get  a hit, but after reaching on an error in the 8th inning, he scored all  the way  from  first on a Gardner double that gave the Yanks an 8-7 lead.. Young legs in action, his speed also created  Escobar’s gaffe, one that  cost the Royals this game

What you’re getting instead, with the normal dinosaurs on the bench nursing injuries or on the DL, is a bunch of hungry overachievers playing energized baseball.. Guys that  are doing what  they have to do  to  win games, not players struggling to pad their stats, in an effort to  justify their absurd contracts

Teixeira is mired big time, but in his mind he gets paid to hit HR’s, and by Jesus he’s gonna keep  approaching his AB’s with  that mindset.. The result hasn’t been pretty, rolling over ground balls and constantly hitting into  the shift

Ellsbury is a defensive liability at this stage of his career, he’s a decent Punch  and Judy hitter, a terrible OBP player, and he’s always hurt.. ARod is fine, if you like one dimensional antiques who  can’t move or run once he does put the ball in play

He does supply power, and he does lengthen  the line-up, but the magic is gone from his game, he’s pretty much  riding out the last 2 yr’s and $42M he’s owed, plus blocking Beltran, an abysmal defender  from being an  everyday DH..

  1. McCann and Beltran were 5 for 10 great offensive night for those two guys the top 4 in the line-up Gardner Castro McCann and Carlos 7 for 17… McCann has a really good line when he hits in the first inning, maybe keep him there, if he didn’t get hurt sliding home

How Gordon didn’t throw out McCann running from 2nd base on that single boggles the mind… Again Royals look like their just mailing it in, good to see, stay asleep for 2 more games boys

    • Lol I I keep egging LG’s manager to keep up the good work pissing off the agency, they’re almost at their wits end

LG told me to stop talking to him hahaha, I get a kick out of wrangling those cream puff bitches sitting in their cushy office selling slabs of meat to the market.. LG wants to kiss their ass, our clubhouse is divided lol

  3. Nice to see Crazy Joey Psycho with a half smile on his face and no longer out on the ledge.
I think it’s time to run off a ten game winning streak. At least that is my hope.
One word of caution. I saw Ian Kennedy pitch over the weekend. He looks nothing like the guy with the same name who used to pitch here. His ball is moving like crazy and he has three good pitches. Maybe the short porch in right can do him in.

  4. Noogsie, after Pinieda’s 1st inning, Joey Claps is back on that ledge.
    Keeerist Watta sucky start.

  5. Donnie B
    So very true.
This team reminds me of an expression my grandfather always used. “Chicken one day, feathers the next.” Hoping they can rally and get on a roll

    May 11, 2016 at 8:20 pm

    • Hahahahaha great saying noogsie

  8. About 20 % of the season is in the books. As Yogi would say—“it’s getting late, early.”

    May 11, 2016 at 11:18 pm

    • Tough to see this group mount a long run noogsie, they might have some good days, but the earners might be past their grinding days..

Up to Ellsbury, Captain Gardner, McCann, Headley, with help from Castro, Hicks, Ackley and Gregorius

Two guys killing them are Ellsbury and Headley

      May 12, 2016 at 8:41 am

  9. Big game today, a win and the fake run is back on if they can beat the Champs and take the series..Shut me down Evo

    May 12, 2016 at 8:59 am

  10. Francesa was screaming to not let Hicks play

Can’t produce if you don’t play Mikey

In his past seven games, Hicks has gone 9-for-21 (.429) with two homers and five RBIs.

At least he’s not Beltran in RF and unlike Ellsbury he has a professional arm in the OF

A steady diet of the younger players looks like a plan

maybe platoon the Grand daddies who can’t grind every day

Once in a while put Carlos in RF and hope he doesn’t cost any runs

Also don’t want Carlos getting hurt it blows the trade value

  11. People are surprised when Pinheada gets blasted-they should be surprised when he pitches well. The media is beginning to turn on him,a bad sign-lol GeniusJoe was in full moron mode in the post game-“Goody gave up a hit,but Cokey saved the bullpen”-he talks like my 2 year old grand daughter. If you look at the batting averages of the starting lineups before the game, its a wonder they win any games with the majority batting below .200-its pathetic and disgusting. But to me,the most pathetic and disgusting thing is YES showing Ellsbury-aka Kotex/Tampax-“running” before the game. He is the most useless pos I have ever seen,is not injured, yet cannot play! He went from “missing a day or two” to now possibly going to the dl after missing almost a week, and he has no torn muscles,no broken bones,no fkn injury. Brickhouse narrates the film of Tampax running like a 85 year old senior softball player, saying Joe hopes he can be back soon!! Yanks should inject him with steroids and hope he gets suspended. What a piece of garbage!! Yanks are missing Tex’s glove at 1b,Ackley might as well be using a frying pan on his hand.
Maybe all the injuries have actually helped them-in reality they could not have been playing worse-and they can actually win another series by winning tonight.

    • I vote for Dallas as a replacement for Jack Curry on the post game show.
We will, however, need an experienced technician in charge of the seven second delay.

      May 12, 2016 at 10:52 am

    • Fantastic rundown Big D

And yes I’d pay the premium time warner cable price if you were doing Bryl Creem Curry’s gig
Hahahaha and as noogsie points out we’ll throw the 7 second delay on that fucker just in case a few verbs and adjectives slip out
Great stuff fellas you guys are keeping my sanity
