Yanks Alive After 5?

with 13 comments

After winning 5 games in a row the Yanks are now tied with Tampa for 3rd place with  a .488 winning percentage.. The Bombers are 21-22, the Rays 20-21.. Both  clubs are 5.5 behind Grand Papi’s Boston Traveling Circus who  continue to pound MLB pitching..

Chili Davis is getting a ton of credit for teaching those young Boston players the benefit of hitting line to line in this pitching / shift era of baseball..

I’m not sure what Ortiz is doing, but whatever it is, maybe he can share it with ARod, who  will be back in the line up  on Tuesday against Team Canada

This will be the president of Rougned Odor’s fan club, the Don B’s first  glimpse at his worst nightmare, Jose Bautista, since Ordor put Joey Bats on  Queer Street with  an overhand right that  would have made Tommy Hearns envious

As for Rodriguez, the Yanks held him back over the week end and Beltran continued to thrive in the DH hole… Beltran is a good dude, he’s full of shit, but I like guys who  will  protect one of their teammates..

After the game he told  Brickhouse Marakavits, that he doesn’t like to DH, loves playing right field, and he can’t wait to see ARod back in the line-up

The switch-hitting Beltran has been the DH in a dozen games with Rodriguez on the DL and thrived. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Sunday’s 5-4 win over the A’s. In those 12 games Beltran has batted .367 (18-for-49) with three homers and 17 RBIs.

Maybe ARod will  go on a run, these old guys seem to play  a bit better after some time off..  ARod will hear it from the Bronx Zoo if he continues to hit below .200, the millennial zoo animals have now gotten used to their expected birth right, a 5 game winning streak

PinHeada Better?

The biggest question Re: this team yesterday  was directed at Pineda.. The A’s would be a  scrappy poor man’s blue collar  bunch if healthy, but not only are they  talent deficient, they’re now a walking mash unit.. With  that in mind, this may have been Pineda’s last stand had he continued on his path of doom

Then  again who  does CashMan have to  replace him? So Pineda like Matt Harvey in Flushing is gonna have to  dance with the wolves every 4 or 5 days… The Yanks and Mets will have to hope the casualties are light, yesterday  the Bombers eeked out a 5-4 win

Entering Sunday’s game Pineda’s eight opening innings this season had resulted in a 13.50 ERA, a .500 batting average against (21-for-42) and a 1.508 OPS.

Pineda was better then he’s been, but “Let’s be Honest” if this guy is pitching the way the Yanks hyped him this winter, the A’s would have been sliced like a  piece of prosciutto crudo

Pineda was working with his customary 3 pitches, a Fast ball  cutter (95 mph) an underwhelming change up ( 89 mph) and a little bit better slider (87 mph)

PineTop  threw 98 pitches

48 FB cutters, 3 swings and misses, 78% Strikes, 3 hits

35 Sliders, 8 swings and misses, the A’s bit at  54% of his sliders, they  had 3 of their 6 hits off that  offering

15 Change up’s, 1 swing and miss, they  put 3 balls in play off this pitch  but none of them  for hits

Pineda has had trouble with 0-2 counts .316 .316 .368 .684,

Crisp doubled on an 0-2 count in the 3rd inning, but no other damage in those counts..

Burns got him for a single on a 2-2 count in the 1st inning, Semien doubled on a 2-2 count in the 2nd..

The Yanks gave him a 2-1 lead but after his first  1-2-3 inning in the 4th he gave the lead up in the 5th

Muncy lined out to shortstop. 2 1
Smolinski singled to left. 2 1
Crisp lined out to center. 2 1
Burns singled to left, Smolinski to second. 2 1
Vogt doubled to left, Smolinski and Burns scored. 2 3
Valencia grounded out to shortstop. 2 3
2 RUNS, 3 HITS, 0 ERRORS

The Yanks retook  the lead 4-3 in the top of the 6th

Ellsbury grounded out to shortstop. 2 3
Gardner singled to center. 2 3
Beltrán singled to left, Gardner to second. 2 3
McCann struck out swinging. 2 3
Axford relieved Hahn. 2 3
Teixeira reached on infield single to second, Gardner scored, Beltrán to second. 3 3
Castro singled to center, Beltrán scored, Teixeira to third. 4 3
Headley hit by pitch, Castro to second. 4 3
Gregorius lined out to right. 4 3
2 RUNS, 4 HITS, 0 ERRORS

Two out runs, the best kind, Teixeira had to leg out his RBI, not what  you want but expect from your struggling slugger, maybe the worm will  turn for him

Pineda finished his 6 inning stint with a 1-2-3- 6th, his 2nd clean inning of the day

Working out of the stretch was a problem for Pineda in his previous two starts when he got smoked. Sunday, Rothschild saw improvement.

“I think it was better. I wouldn’t say significantly,’’ Rothschild said. “He made some strides with it and we need to keep working on it.’’

PinTop stayed out of the NY media wood chipper by making it through  6 innings, 3 runs, with the lead intact.. Thanks to  a day off on Saturday, and a day off today, the Holy Smoke was  rested, so  what  Pineda delivered was all Joey Claps wanted from his unpredictable starter

The Holy Smoke

Betances pitched a clean 7th inning, 2 punch outs looking, and a 6-3 putout, 13 pitches

Miller’s defense abandoned him in the 8th he had to  fight back from 2 errors by Gregarious and Castro.. First  and third no outs Miller punched out Valencia.

He gave up  a 5-3 RBI ground out, an unearned run, then  finished off the A’s with  another 5-3 put out

Chapman had a clean  9th inning, Two 6-3 ground outs, and a punch out

The Yanks are 5-0  when  the Holy Smoke send their competition to  the promised land

A Scoring Machine

The Yanks got HR’s from McCann in the 2nd and Ellsbury in the 3rd, McCann’s Tater tied it at 1-1, Ellsbury’s HR gave Pineda a 2-1 lead to lose.. We posted their 2 out rally in the 6th. They  added  what  became the winning run in the 8th off Doolittle a quality reliever

Doolittle relieved Axford. 4 3
Hicks singled to right. 4 3
Ellsbury sacrificed to catcher, Hicks to second. 4 3
Gardner struck out swinging. 4 3
Beltrán doubled to left, Hicks scored. 5 3
McCann fouled out to catcher. 5 3
1 RUNS, 2 HITS, 0 ERRORS

Beltran  with yet another 2 out clutch knock, gonna miss you in the DH spot Carlos

  1. Let’s see if this jump starts the team, or was this just right place right time?

    as Noogsie alluded too

    from Mushnick

Perhaps Phil Mickelson’s enormous gambling debts were the result of his close, first-name relationship with legendary tout, Mike Francesa.

In the Preakness, Francesa, who threw out Nyquist in the Derby, touted 3-5 Nyquist.

  2. The moscone future arm candy bird dog talent search continues.. yes that is her phone number tattooed to the wrist ‘scone.. and she’s from Poland so she’ll have no idea what your offer will be, but when your private Jet shows up to take her to dinner, bring some pals to keep grandma and Auntie Polski occupied

    • Thank you Sal for keeping me in mind. Always on the lookout for my future ex wife! She fits the bill on the eyes, though there could be a language problem. I’ll throw in a few ‘ski’s & see if I can get by. Maybe I can get the great Don B to act as my chauffeur & host to talk me up a bit? While this is all under negotiation, the search still continues. To that end, tomorrow night, I’ll be attending my 1st Yankee game of the season. Always assured of great Beaver shooting there, we will be on the lookout for all who fill the qualifications. If there are worthwhile contestents, I will have my cameraman with me to document all.

  3. Hicks made a catch yesterday that would have been a triple at least if Beltless was in RF.
I don’t care if he “guards the gunside” of Sonny Fredo and Michael he is not Yankee material, imo,, but he still trends better than Alex tho.
I used to go watch Catfish pitch on Sundays in the Collesium back in my Bay area days, hated that Park then.

    • Yes Donny Beltran is a DH he knows it you know it everybody knows it

Yanks are stuck with bad team building and I give Beltran credit for not throwing ARod under the bus
And acting like he hates to DH

My biggest fear is this team will Win between 80 and 85 games not good enough to win or make noise in the playoffs but not bad enough to dump the players that will get the team younger quicker

Hal will continue to fake a playoff run and sucker the pink hats who pay the freight at the Mall

  4. Sal—The RN’s Funhouse guy is hilarious. He is going to give Mikey a stroke. He has a new title in honor of Mikey–” I never said dat.” And, of course, then he replays Mikey saying exactly what he says he did not. Also chiming in there is this guy Sour Shoes who is affiliated with Howard Stern. He keeps calling Mikey with prank calls, during which he plays different characters, including Howard Stern’s 90 something year old parents. And finally Joe Gannascoli, who played Vito on the Sopranos, is a big RN Funhouse guy and he chimes in. Of course, he hates Mikey but I don’t know why. He was one of Tony Soprano’s Captains, who was outed for being gay and fled to New Hampshire. It is all right up my alley in terms of their humor, especially if they are picking on Mikey who doesn’t know what in hell is going on. Sour Shoes is driving him nuts.

    • Hey Noogsie that is a very good site
Very funny, I access it through his twitter account looking for his well done content
Wasn’t aware of the other contributing characters but Ibwas starting to think it was obvious there had to be some goofing on Mikey that explains a lot

Btw the old bass player in our traveling circus is also from an acting family and Vito was one of our favorite mimics

Our favorite when Vito was on the lam he was in that gay bar up in New Hampshire is my guess, and the dialogue was
” hey what’s a guy gotta do to get a drink around here” the guy he was coming onto said
      “You’re doin it”

To hear our buddy Byron dead pan it cracked me up forever

Thanks for the Intel we’ll keep those guys on our go to list

  5. One other thing–they constantly bring up the number nine, as a way of mocking Mikey who pronounces it noyne.
Mikey does not have a clue what they are doing.

  6. Francesa looking for a first baseman for the Mets is like me looking for the main artery in a heart transplant

He’s asking what Carter’s OBP is lol

    Carter is Duda

teams know the Mets are desperate this could be a raping if they look for a trade

Makes them not signing Murphy look foolish again dude could be playing 3rd 2nd and 1st plus leading the league in hitting

  7. Lol Francesa relying on Eddie Last Call Coleman for 1st base info

All Eddie ever says is I don’t know Mike
Coleman’s office is the closest local Irish Watering Hole

Why don’t these mooks get some real baseball pundits on the air
Sweeney and Coleman give you rehashed Twitter content that has hit the bricks hours before either one of them come on the air

  8. Damn, Big Head Michael Kay and his turd of a partner going full out rip on Yankee fans who want to ditch the old crippled over contracted Veterans for the kids.
I mean fake whiny voices ridiculing and belittling their callers.
Hideous shit, I can’t believe their arrogance.
Kay was nicer before he married up.

    • Kay sounds like he’s towing the company line Donny, I didn’t hear what he said, I was listening to Francesa make an ass of himself today trying to fix the Mets

The NYY run their team the way trends were before the last CBA, most teams have made the transition to a younger core base, the teams that don’t have a chance to win by mid July start dumping expiring contracts at the deadline for useful prospects..

The NYY need to create revenue and can’t stop the Championship or bust facade to rebuild with kids, so they fake a playoff run, you can do it for 5 months winning 84 / 85 games..

      But

They’re motto should be we’ll keep a competitive team on the field, one that will create revenue over 162 games, but we really don’t have any great players on our team anymore, and our core is older, plus our farm system isn’t producing above replacement level players, we’ve gone from Championship or bust to a Wild Card and playoff series or bust.. that’s pretty much every team in baseball’s motto, lets just get to the playoffs

If Hal doesn’t want to spend in excess of $200M he needs to change his Championship or bust M.O.

Signing guys like Ellsbury with no options to get out of the deal is asinine, his game was all predicated on his legs, and speed… Legs don’t get better as you get older… Cano is an offensive machine who could have spent his last 3 yr’s as a DH… Look at Ortiz, or Beltran when they just concentrate on DHing

Ellsbury is gonna spend the last 3 yrs stealing money, he’s already stealing money

Speaking of Cano good article here, he sounds pretty happy too me
