A New Angle

with 11 comments

By now we know the formula for Michael Pineda’s success, fast ball  command on both  sides of the plate, and the slider needs to  have depth, another words the damn ball needs to have late movement, down. The results when that isn’t happening become detrimental  to  the 2016 Yankees cause…

Dr Larry, the Stable Guy, at least for the time being, has found the right mixture of meds and mechanical fixes for Pineda, who  two  weeks ago was being threatened with sole ownership papers  of Frankie Cervelli’s 98 Oldsmobile, the infamous drive yourself  car service to  and from  AAA SWB Stadium..

I still  think  that  whole drama was a psychological ploy by the Revenge of the Nerds CashMan  and Girardi in an  effort to  scare Pinheada straight… I mean  who  we’re they  bringing up  to  replace him?

Anyway Pineda credits his recent success to Larry Rothschild changing his arm  angle

For Pineda, it’s been all about a mechanical adjustment. The Dominican Republic native said he’s watched lots of video with pitching coach Larry Rothschild and the two came to a conclusion: He needed to lower his arm angle. The move has given his slider more sideways movement and his fastball more of a cut away from right-handed hitters.

“Everything is better,” he said. “I’ve been looking for it and trying to keep it that way.”

The Yanks are now 2-0 on their 18 game HayMaker Tour after securing a tidy 6-3 victory over Fat Mike’s Angels

Bomber Offense Medicates Pineda

Pineda overcame his most feared deamon, the first inning, where he normally digs a hole deeper then his anemic offense is able to  climb out of. Last night he conquered his nemesis on 8 pitches, what I enjoyed as much, he closed out the 7th inning on 10 pitches, and his pitch total for getting 21 outs was 91

In the bottom of the first  inning Fat Mike found out why Yunel Escobar has been on 5 teams, he’s one of the premier Stu-nods in all of baseball.

The Yanks were mugging sacrificial lamb David Huff, Gardner singled, followed by a loud  “Un correazo by Beltran!” that made it 2-0.. ARod and Castro  singled, Headley was prepared to kill the rally when he hit a tailor made DP to Escobar at 3rd base

With Headley running the Don B could have turned two, but Esco stepped on the bag and started to  run to  the dugout.. By the pained look on his face, the last cannoli Fat Mike just  ate before showtime wasn’t sitting to  well… Genius’ hate when their players lose focus, and become abstracted from the task  at hand..

Babe Romine then singled Headless home to make it 3-0.. A Hicks lead off double, a Gardner sac bunt, and a Refsynder sac fly made it 4-0 in the 2nd. The Pineda cushion extended in the 3rd when Castro  golfed a botched slider across traffic, it smacked the right field foul pole to make it 5-0

Every Bomber had a hit, sans Refsynder who  did have a sac fly, and Headless who had nothing

A 5-0 lead had to  relax Pineda who stranded a walk in the 2nd inning, a double in the 3rd, and another walk in the 4th, before a double, a single and a HR made it a 5-3 game in the 5th

What impressed the Yanks most, was Pineda’s ability to  shake off the 3 run  5th..  Pineda in a turn of events didn’t fold like a beach  chair, but instead he shut down the next  2 innings, 6 up  and 6 down on 21 pitches..

“When he gave up the home run to Calhoun, he had no overall emotion,” catcher Austin Romine said. “There was no giving up. He just got back to what we were doing. Other times, he’s let it get out of hand.”

His final line:  7 innings, 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 BB’s, 4 K’s, 15 swings and misses, 91-61 pitches, and an 8 to  5 ratio on ground ball  to  fly ball outs

B-M no C

Psycho Joe handed the ball off to Betances who was coming off his worst 4 game  stretch as a pro, so  there was some drama involved here with the Yanks hanging on to  a slim 5-3 lead

Betances was his old self getting two punch outs and an F/9 from a very dangerous Mike Trout to close down the 8th inning

In the bottom of the 8th inning Gardner walked, a botched caught stealing by Petit created a RISP, and ARod looped the clutch RBI knock  gifting  Miller a 3 run lead to  work  with in the 9th

Miller worked around a 1 out double to  nail  down his 7th  save of the season.. Once again Pineda seems like a pitcher who gets better as the game progresses, perhaps Joey Day Care can  start  to let these guys try to  navigate 21 outs… It might start  to give them confidence in their stuff, then  again my guess it’s still  about pitch  count, and of course the talent coming out of the other dugout to hit…

The Fabulous Faux Playoff Run Rolls On

The Yanks are now 2-0 on the HayMaker Tour,  28-30 overall,

6.5 games behind 1st place  Baltimore, 2 games behind the 3rd place Toronto Canadians, 1.5 games ahead of Tampa who  are in the cellar…

They have a 2 game winning streak and are 5-5 in the last  10 games..

15-12 at  home 13-18 on the road, in the last  10 games they’ve scored at least  5 runs, in 5 of those games, so  the offense has been slightly better..

the Yanks are 14th (2nd to last in the AL) in runs 223

Last in OPS .684  / Last is hits 459 /  next to last in OBP .301  and in Slg % .383

The Yanks are 2nd best in Striking Out, right behind the Angels.. The league average is 459, the Yanks have struck out  404, the Angels 347… Houston leads the league, and the world in striking out with  588

  2. Where are the Bomber Scouts?

If you want a colossal blunder for the Yankees versus a division foe: In 2010, they took can-field, can’t-hit shortstop Cito Culver 32nd. The Blue Jays (with two supplemental first-rounders) scooped up Aaron Sanchez at 34 and Noah Syndergaard at 38.

    • Gardner is only the Captain of Mikey 2 Chin’s mind…. He’s the daily go to quote, amazing… Some day hopefully in our lifetime, we’ll look back at the era from 2013 until this abyss ends and say wow that was as bad as it got in the old days when the Mick retired

  5. The Yankees have a habit of drafting high school players-instead of college players-that never seem to pan out. They never learn, continue to make the same mistakes which is why they have no young players,no prospects. Pinheada pitched well, they hit the ball and sent the genius home crying. Great fight in Baltimore!!
