Yanks Buck the Trend

with 4 comments

The Yanks  have finally figured it out, get 6 innings of 1 run ball  from your starter, then  call on Ghostbusters… That’s right, Betances, Miller and Chapman, if anybody on the 2016 NYY team is gonna wake up  and capture the illusive Bomber Ghosts of past it’s the Big 3

The Yanks are now back  to  a familiar spot, .500, after sneaking past the Chirs Davis-less Baltimore Orioles 2-1..

The Bombers might be 26 -32 vs teams over .500, and  12 and 19 vs the AL East, actually they’re 8-17 vs the 3 teams in front of them, Baltimore, Boston and Toronto, but when they use the Formula the Bombers are 18-1

The team is also  32-3 after the 6th inning

Last night the first ingredient the Yanks added to the Formula was  a rare 6 inning 1 run performance from Ivan Nova, and for the 2nd day in a row Psycho Joe went to the T-Shirt for 9 outs, and per usual, they closed it out with  flare

At some point we might even get 18 outs from the Trio  before all is said and done, and done could be any day now as the trade deadline creeps closer..

The biggest buzz was Chapman hitting 105.1 on the gun as he delivered one 100 to 105 MPH fast balls after another in his 1-2-3 9th inning

Closer Aroldis Chapman accomplished three things Monday night in the Bronx as the Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 2-1:

He saved his 19th game of the year.
He extended the bullpen’s scoreless streak to 22.0 innings.
He threw a fastball 105.1 miles per hour, the fastest pitch in major league baseball since 2010, when he last did it, which set a record.

There wasn’t much offense in this game, 2 HR’s and a text book 2 singles / sac fly RBI..

The Yanks scored first on a Bomb off the bat of ARod, who  apparently worked all afternoon on hitting drills designed to lift the ball.. It helped last night that Kevin Gausman laid a 94 MPH meatball on a T and #13 just  crushed it into  the 2nd deck

Good job by ARod, hopefully# 697 doesn’t take another month of Sunday’s to  show up, if this offense is gonna keep pumping out  3-1 / 2-1 games they’ll need ARod to go Big Fly more often…..

Nova gave the run back in the top of the 3rd on a Schoop HR, the Yanks won it in the bottom of the 3rd

Gardner singled to left. 1 1
Ellsbury popped out to third. 1 1
Beltrán singled to left, Gardner to third. 1 1
McCann hit sacrifice fly to center, Gardner scored. 1 2
Rodriguez walked, Beltrán to second. 1 2
Gregorius struck out swinging. 1 2
1 RUNS, 2 HITS, 0 ERRORS

Nova had a rough first  3 innings, but for the last  3  of his 6 inning stint, he pitched ahead in the count, and he found a feel  for his curve ball, which helped keep  the O’s off balance for 18 outs

6 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 3 BB’s 4 K’s.. Nova got 11 swings and misses, 5 of them  from the curve ball

He wiggled out of a bases loaded jam in the 1st inning. Over came a lead off walk in the 2nd, lost the lead when Schoop  went Big Fly to make it 1-1 in the 3rd

From that point he got some help  from his defense in the 4th after giving up  a walk  and an infield hit, and he finished strong shutting down the last 7 outs in succession

Good job by Novocain

The last two  games, both  close wins vs two of the best AL teams have certainly heated up  the trade rumors..

Beltran has been on fire, last night he picked up  3 hits, and despite his power numbers disappearing in July, (no HR’s down to  a .778 OPS) he’s a robust 17 for 51 (.333) with 5 doubles, and a .346 OBP

He’s also  gone 5 for his last 8 with 2  doubles

Teams who need some late inning help have to be drooling over the Big 3… While it isn’t customary coughing up top #1 or 2 type prospects that are one yr away, (see the Cespedes / Fullmer deal) for a reliever, one or even  two of these Big 3 could put the icing on a long playoff run

Captain Gardner  has gone 5 for his last 12, but his OBP has dropped to  .318 in July, down from .390 in June… Maybe some team will  want a lead off batter who  can play both left and center field… Sell high!

Unfortunately, despite Mike Francesa and Mikey  2 Chins fawning all over Captain Gardner since he’s been batting lead off, as a lead off hitter he’s batting .238 .347 .425 .772

I wouldn’t get too  excited about him bringing back a haul of prospects

  1. If teams really do get desperate and offer up players CashMan can’t refuse what do the Yanks do to keep fans coming to the park?

A big draw obviously is the Big 3, must see TV, and I would imagine nobody leaves to beat the traffic when those guys are ready to save a game

So losing Chapman and Miller would hurt big time

Beltran would be a little easier, he’s really a DH, and trading him opens up the DH for ARod and McCann..

If Judge isn’t ready based on his recent injury, move Ref to right field, he’s a fan favorite despite Francesa killing him everyday.. Franny hates players who aren’t stars who have a bigger cult following then he does

If somehow there was a God and Captain Gardner was traded, you could immediately move either Gamel or Cave into his spot, no harm done, depends what CashMan can get back for him

I’d bring Sanchez up the minute Beltran is traded, McCann can split time between catching, DHing, and 1st base,

Sanchez could catch and DH, the Romine Empire just keeps doing what he’s doing, but now you’re floating McCann to 3 positions,

the important thing is to develop Sanchez and Romine to take over as McCann works his way toward full time platoon catcher / DH in 2017, and full time DH in 2018

Unless you’re blown away I don’t see Eovaldi, or Pineda traded, both pitchers are affordable for 2017

I do see Nova who is an expiring contract, and you really can’t offer him a QO, he might take it… As a starter they could move him, he’s gone anyway and you can plug in Green Cessa or Severino

I’d like to see Severino brought back and put in the 7th inning until he can develop into the much needed starter, but that might perk fan interest once Chappy is gone…

Miller I just don’t see enough of a return to move him, CashMan needs to hold a team up for a huge overpay on Miller

Francesa yesterday stumbling all over himself when finally a caller with a little bit on the ball asked him what the returns would be for the relievers… His only reference was Syndergaard and Wheeler…

Of course lucky for him it was ready to talk golf so he was never schooled on those deals…. Syndergaard was traded for a Cy Young winner and when Beltran was traded to San Francisco for top prospect Zack Wheeler in 2011 he was 34 yr’s old and still a two way player with tremendous post season accomplishments

My guess GM’s aren’t gonna hand over those types of prospects for a reliever, even ones as dominant as the Big 3… I wonder what the haul would be if some team wanted 2 of the 3?

  2. Dan Vogelbach is killing it at AAA, and the other name floated for Miller is Jeimer Candelario

They’re just prospects Theo, think what that parade will be like buddy, it’s been 107 yr’s bro, maybe getting both Chappy and Miller is the way to go….

Jeimer Candelario and Dan Vogelbach are nice but you’re forgetting one big name, the guy with the Big S on his under armor.. Up too you, try and win it with Rondon all by himself but he could use some help…..

  3. The good news is they have won 2 in a row really without much offense. The bad news is that the big3 have been used both games so the bullpen tonight might be gidrool roulette. Nice to see Arod finally do something hopefully he will get hot. Tex is made out of glass,he fouls a ball off his foot,he has to be hospitalized. Actually its probably better he is out,we get to see Refsnyder. Francesa talks out of his ass,he is just a moron. He is treating Refsnyder like he treated Daniel Murphy-how did that work out?
Chapman throwing 105 mph,get rid of him now!!-lol There have been lots of rumors of trades lets hope they use their heads and make some deals.
