Sweet Home Chicago

“You can never have too much  pitching”, one of the sanctimonious unwritten rules in baseball now has a distant relative, you can never have too many 6’1” 175 /190 pound short stops

By now Gleyber Torres, or Glibber as spell check insists on changing his name to, is a household name in NY.

Shotgun Chapman trade rumors have smothered the back pages of every baseball publication and  Chicago Cubs prospect Gleyber “Glibber” Torres is the “stud prospect” CashMan has targeted as his big game haul..

Another of the sanctimonious unwritten rules of baseball, the short stop  position is the best place to  stockpile players, they’re most capable of playing elsewhere on the diamond, plus they have trade value…

Personally I’d rather stock pile sluggers, especially in an era where sluggers are rare, but I get the point..

Here’s what you need to know about Torres:

HIGHLY REGARDED: MLB.com ranked Torres the Cubs’ top overall prospect. ESPN’s Keith Law ranked the Venezuelan youngster as the 26th best prospect in the game about a week ago. Baseball America had him at No. 41 before the season.

SCOUTING REPORT: According to MLB.com, Torres has a quick right-handed swing and a mature approach, recognizing pitches well and using the entire field. Once Torres gets stronger and learns to pull pitches more often, he could produce 15 or more homers per season.” He should stick at shortstop, boasting a strong arm and average speed.

FAST TRACK?: Torres has put up a .275 batting average, 19 steals and nine homers with a .791 OPS at High-A Myrtle Beach. He’s very young for his level, an indication that Chicago believes he could end up in the majors sooner than later.

STACKED AT SHORTSTOP: The Yankees were already rich in young shortstop talent before Torres. Jorge Mateo, the team’s top prospect, is 21 years old and was ranked the 50th best prospect in the game. Mateo recently returned from a two-week suspension for violating team policy, the team said.

MLB.com puts five shortstops in the Yankees’ top 30 prospects list: No. 5 Wilkerman Garcia (rookie-level Pulaski), No. 8 Tyler Wade (Double-A Trenton), No. 13 Hoy Jun Park (Low-A Charleston), No. 21 Kyle Holder (Low-A Charleston) and No. 26 Thairo Estrada (High-A Tampa). The Yankees drafted Holder 30th overall and gave him a $1.8-million singing bonus last year.

If the rumor comes to  fruition,  which probably means sometime today, the Bombers would have an  embarrassment of riches at the old Derek Jeter homestead

Behind D-Gregorius, Torres and Mateo would be  elite prospects with Wade and maybe Holder and Park enticing throw-in players with upside for a future trade.

Despite the extreme long shot of this happening the Yanks have to think Chris Sale, and over the winter Jose Fernandez, both pitchers could empty a farm  system so the more trade bait CashMan brings in over the next  10  days the better

At the moment the rumor mill thinks the Boston Red Sox have the prospects and the most currency and need for Sale, but the speculation on who Chicago  would want in a Sale trade is nuts.

The Yanks can’t match Two of Yoan Moncada,  Andrew Benintendi, and Rafael Devers
RHP Michael Kopech
LHP Henry Owens
RHP Pat Light

The best we could do: Severino, Sanchez, Mateo,  Mitchell and anybody but D-Gregorius, Betances, Miller, Bird,  Judge,  Kaprelian or Rutherford

  2. didn’t realize Warren was in the minors, this deal probably brings him back plus that Candelario kid

Welcome home Adam.. Green, Warren, Mitchell soon, I’d bring up Severino a put him somewhere, probably the bull pen.. Cessa I guess would need to stay stretched out

If Green keeps this up, CashMan wins the Justin Wilson trade

  3. As for Warren, whom the Cubs acquired from the Yankees for infielder Starlin Castro in the offseason, he certainly hasn’t lived up to expectations in Chicago. Before the Cubs demoted Warren, he pitched to a 5.91 ERA over 35 innings and walked nearly five batters per nine frames. From 2013-15 with the Yankees, he amassed terrific numbers (3.23 ERA, 7.65 K/9, 2.92 BB/9, 45.3 percent ground-ball rate) over a 287-inning sample size as both a starter and a reliever.

  5. Deal for Chappy is done, Torres Warren some kid names McKinney and 1 undisclosed

CashMan had a shot to get Jimenez and took the SS?????

Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein told the Yankees from the outset that their primary target – Kyle Schwarber – would not be included in any trade, even for the more desirable Miller. The Yankees’ focus eventually became Torres vs. Eloy Jimenez, a power-hitting, 19-year-old, Single-A outfielder who homered earlier this month in the Futures Game.

  6. Checking McKinney, he looks like another no pop LHB out fielder……Can’t believe he passed on the slugger Jimenez, thats the kid that made that great catch leaping over the fence and he hit HR in the Futures game

#Yankees talked to Chapman’s reps about an extension, when said not interested now, it helped swayed ownership to trade him #Cubs

#Yankees internally debated Torres v. Eloy Jimenez, and decided they like middle-IF over power-hitting OF as main piece for Chapman. #Cubs

Hear #Yankees are sending Gleyber Torres to High-A to be Jorge Mateo’s teammate. Mateo likely to play a lot of 2b for now.

  13. Incredible win for the Yanks today besides the Chapman trade. They actually beat Keuchel, too bad they didn’t do last October. Pinheada gave up a homer on the first pitch then did great for a change. Have to give a lot of credit to Austin Romine with that huge double to deep center-he has made a great improvement this season. Saw a rumor that the WSox want Gary Sanchez-they need a catcher-lets give them McCann!!! We can all help drive him to the airport!! That would be a great move for the Yanks, incredible salary dump too. I was very happy with the Chapman trade, they needed to move him and got 4 players for him! Lets be honest,as fans we don’t know the potential of Torres, and in reality don’t know the difference between him and Pancho Villa. Only the geeks and scouts know and they are wrong most of the time.Yanks also got back their $999 car,Adam Warren, who will take the place of some gidrool and help the bullpen. Plus they got 2 more lefty hitting outfielders so I think they did very well. Lets give credit where some credit is due.

    • hey Big D, they did well is correct, they brought in a player who has more street value then the guy I was hoping for Eloy Jimenez who I’ve seen play once lol….

He did hit a HR and make a circus catch, plus he profiles a slugger, Yanks only have Judge in that column, maybe now Rutherford

I read they mulled it over and the analytics dudes opted for the player with the higher baseball IQ
I’m good with the haul, happy to have Warren back, I’ll miss Chappy he was fun to watch, wild, but fun

Romine Empire has been great… Yanks would need to eat some of that $36M plus what he has coming this yr pro rated it would be about $8M if they wanted to trade McCann…

I think the Yanks are stuck with Bubba, if they won’t eat ARod’s money they won’t eat Bubba’s is my guess

and yes I bet the White Sox need a catcher, I was gonna check their needs SS to maybe.. Yanks do have a competitive package for Sale, but it would empty the stable
