Say It Ain’t ‘Stro ?

Well it took  this long, but the Bombers are now officially playing to  the back of their baseball card!!

The question is, for how long, because  with a Sweep win today over the surging Astros, and  a 3 game series win over the last place Rays this weekend,  #TeamSell will morph into #TeamFooled-U

As one executive said in sizing up the NL: “The Nationals and Giants aren’t just playing to make the playoffs. They want to win a title. Do you think they think they can win titles with Jonathan Papelbon and Santiago Casilla closing?”

Yup, Theo Epstein, the  former Boston Boy Genius who is taking 6 yr’s to  re-build the Cubs into  a Championship contender ain’t messing around, he coughed up his top prospect for the Bombers elite closer Shotgun Chapman

If Bill James and Brian Kenny were buried in King Tut’s Tomb, they  would have turned over in their grave.. Money baller sabermatricians like Billy and Brian would rather cut off their lead limb then offer up  a stud 19 yr old for some failed starter turned 70 innings,  3 outs at a time specialist

Unfortunately for the keepers of the baseball Stat Geek Gate, the game is ever changing, and those $30M a year  starters still only give you 6 innings and change, which  ain’t that  big of a bang for your buck

My favorite whipping boy $217M  David Price has started 21 games, pitched 135.2 innings, that’s a tick over 6 innings per start, (6.18) and has rewarded the Red Sox  with a pedestrian 4.36 ERA

Yes you need 4 good starters in the playoffs, but you also better figure out a way  to  shut down the last 6 to 9 outs

There are two reliever weapon difference makers left on the market, so a memo  to  all  the Hell Fire contenders looking for bull pen help, “What’s In your Pocket”?

Andrew Miller and or Wade Davis could be key contributors to  any Championship team’s November parade aspirations, but the price on both pitchers has been rumored to make the Chapman haul look like a trip  to  the dollar store

Word is Cashman is seeking major-league-ready players in return, which perhaps means someone such as Joe Ross or Lucas Giolito has to be key to the deal. Washington has the lowest on-base percentage (.256) and OPS (.586) from the leadoff spot in the majors, so maybe the addition of Brett Gardner would allow the Yankees access to the prospects they desire.

Still, there is a question if Hal Steinbrenner would approve even an overwhelming return. I have been told he doesn’t want a fire sale and wants to try to make the playoffs this year.

With  5 days left until 4 PM, August 1, the World Champion KC Royals at the moment are 7.5 games  behind the 2nd Wild Card leader, and 9.5 games behind the Indians in the AL Central, so  trading Davis is of course speculative.

The one bug-a-boo, Davis has a team friendly 1 yr $10M team option for 2017, a 1.10 ERA, and a 0.980 WHIP, and per Joel Sherman, his cost is greater then Miller’s

There are two major speed bumps in CashMan  trading Miller,

1). His boss doesn’t want to  concede the last  two months of the season

2). The team he put together this winter is now almost playing like they  were expected to  from the get go.. Even Aaron Hicks contributed to  their 6-3 win over Houston last night with 2 hits, one knock  a 2 run triple in the 5th  to cap  the Bombers 6 run night

The Yanks are now  52-48, they finally picked up  a game on 1st place and sit 6.5 games behind Baltimore, they  also picked up  a half game on Boston and are now 4 games out of the WC play-in game

Since the All Star break the Yanks are 8-4 / .667 . Dating back to  the Cleveland series they’re 11-5 / .688

They have taken series from Cleveland, Baltimore, San Francisco  and now Houston, only Boston put a dent in the momentum by taking 2 of 3 in the first  series post All Star break

The entire pitching staff in this 2nd half has a 2.19 ERA, in their 8  wins the ERA has dropped to  1.49

In the 12 games  the Yanks have outscored the opposition 40-27 a +13 RD

Sabathia snapped out of a 6 game malaise by throwing a terrific 6.2 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, both  solo HR’s.. CC dropped his ERA to 3.95..

He struck out five, and of his 15 ball-in-play outs, ten were recorded on the infield. There was a lot of weak contact.

Per McCann CC has a great  2 seamer that missed the barrel of the bat, ( I checked and he had 14 swings and misses, 5 off that  2 seamer) his cutter had a wrinkle, he worked both  sides.. He added back up  sliders, a few change-ups, and he pretty much put on a clinic

Swarzak relieved Sabathia in the 7th, he faced 5 batters, struck out 3 walked 1 and coughed up  a HR to Gattis to make it 6-3.. He walked Correa with 2 outs in the 8th  and Psycho Joe needed to  call on the Big 2

Betances came in to pitch 0.1 of an inning, he walked the 1st 2 batters he faced, then punched out Castro  to  end a 8th inning threat

Miller closed the 9th,  working around a 1 out double by punching out Springer and Gonzalez who hit one of the two Taters on the night off Sabathia

The Yanks scored 6 runs on the night, they  took a 2-1 lead in the 2nd inning

McCann singled to right. 0 1
Teixeira doubled to deep left center, McCann to third. 0 1
Gregorius hit sacrifice fly to left, McCann scored. 1 1
Castro singled to left, Teixeira to third. 1 1
Headley singled to center, Teixeira scored, Castro to second. 2 1
Hicks struck out swinging. 2 1
Gardner walked, Castro to third, Headley to second. 2 1
Ellsbury popped out to shortstop. 2 1
2 RUNS, 4 HITS, 0 ERRORS

They  tacked on a run in the 3rd to make it 3-1

Beltrán singled to right. 2 1
McCann flied out to left. 2 1
Beltrán to second on wild pitch by Fister. 2 1
Teixeira walked. 2 1
Gregorius grounded into fielder’s choice to first, Teixeira out at second, Beltrán to third. 2 1
Castro reached on infield single to third, Beltrán scored, Gregorius to second. 3 1
Headley struck out swinging. 3 1
1 RUNS, 2 HITS, 0 ERRORS

They  capped their scoring in the 5th plating 3 runs with the key hits coming from Headless and Hicks

McCann hit by pitch. 3 1
Teixeira singled to center, McCann to second. 3 1
Gregorius grounded out to first, McCann to third, Teixeira to second. 3 1
Castro intentionally walked. 3 1
Headley hit sacrifice fly to center, McCann scored, Teixeira to third. 4 1
Hicks tripled to deep right, Teixeira and Castro scored. 6 1
Devenski relieved Fister. 6 1
Gardner flied out to center. 6 1
3 RUNS, 2 HITS, 0 ERRORS

Tanaka on regular rest  goes for the sweep.. The biggest  question  about this puzzling team, are they just putting the pedal  to  the mettle until August  1st? And are they  capable of keeping up  this plus .600 winning percentage over the last 62 games of the season

CashMan’s dilemma, Re: his remaining expiring assets Nova and Beltran, plus his one big Chip Miller, has #TeamSell hoodwinked  declaration day by being  #TeamFooled-U?

  1. pretty amazing turn of events, the Yanks with their recent play and the fact they still might sell have become must see TV for the first time this season

No Big 2 tonight, so Warren is up, wonder if Green is available, and i wonder if King is right, they’re just getting ready for Severino to take over for Nova who Sherman speculates they could trade to Miami for the injured Carter Capps

    I guess Severino pitched better
Severino was 7-1 with a 3.25 ERA in 10 starts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after going 0-6 with a 7.46 ERA in seven big league starts.

I’d plunk him in the pen tonight, let’s see him eat up a few innings if Tanaka can’t get at least 18 to 21 outs.

  2. I hate the sight of McCant.
Behind the dish & at the Plate.
I had hopes when he got here but not much cause i never like Atlanta’s players.
He has underachieved since day ine
    Total bust in Pinstripes.

    • They had a shot to pick up ground tonight with everybody else losing

Tanaka on 4 days rest wasn’t an Ace tonight

  3. This is the kid the Yanks wanted for Miller over the winter

Severino found a home in the pen but they’ll start him when Nova goes
If they’re serious about contending go to a 6 man rotation
What are they gonna get for Nova?

  4. I know they are playing better but is Flash serious about Tanaka

That 4.90 on 4 days rest vs the 1.70 on 5 or more is real
His last outing was the outlier what did they expect
