It Ain’t Nova Till It’s Nova

with 16 comments

The battle of Deadline Darlings between Ivan Nova and Jake Odorizzi went hands down  to Ordorizzi after the Rays starter and 5 of his friends put the Bomber offense to  sleep in 5-1 Tampa Bay win

The Yanks must have really enjoyed their day off on Thursday, so much  so  they doubled down and took Friday off too..

#TeamSell had seemingly turned the corner after taking 2 of 3 from the Astros, who went into  that  series with a serious swagger in their gate. The game 3 loss was a bit of a kill joy, but the team had made a good run against 1st place type teams, Brillo Levine and Junior Steinbrenner were looking like baseball savants, and the media had to wait before clicking  save / publish buttons on their sell  articles

Psycho Joe called this weekend Playoff Baseball, actually the Yanks have been playing playoff baseball from the start of the 2nd half..  The intensity  kicked up  a notch last night with the series dropping anchor in Boss Junior’s back yard, and him in attendance..

Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner was expected to be at game that saw scouts from many playoff contenders in attendance for the start of a three-game series with Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline looming that could help determine if New York might join Tampa Bay as potential sellers.

If Junior is using this series as the judge and jury deciding his team’s 2016 fate, score one for the #TeamSell . The Bombers will have 2 more chances against one of baseball’s worst  teams to erase last night’s sleepwalk from Hal’s short term memory..

Nova is an expiring asset Cashman  has looked to unload, he was starting to  turn the corner and even had a few rumors attached to his name as we approached the deadline.. One team rumored to be interested, Miami, bypassed NovaCain and cut a deal  with San Diego  for Andy Cashner

With that  window shut, Nova now had a chance to impress the scouts in attendance

Teams represented included San Francisco, the Chicago Cubs, Florida, Cleveland, Washington, Toronto, Baltimore, Texas and the Chicago White Sox.

Nova had a nightmare evening, 4.1 innings, 6  hits, 5 runs, 3 BB’s, 3 K’s, 2 HR’s.. I can’t imagine any contending team giving the Yanks much back  for him, so unless Cashman  sells real low, Hal’s Pal’s are stuck  with him

He’s still pitching in a walk  year, so he won’t completely check out, and if the Yanks stand pat and make a run at the Wild Card, I don’t see how carrying  Green, Warren, Severino, Nova, adding them  to Tanaka, Eovaldi, Pineda, Sabathia, Betances and Miller can hurt?

That leaves 2 more spots for Swarzak, Shreve, Goody, or any of the Gidrool Squad Cashman wants to  shuttle back and forth until September..

As we saw last night Green  a young starter ate 3.2 innings after Nova flopped, but you still have Severino and Warren, two  quality arms that  can bridge to Betances and Miller.. I would think Green is done for the rest of the series, but it would be foolish  to shuttle him back and lose him for 10 days

The inability to get out of the 5th inning on the first game of an important series is the ultimate dog won’t hunt outing from Nova.. If you’re looking to  add to  a rotation Nova could be a potential  headache, more of a problem then a solution.. The type of problem that  could get a GM fired…

The Bomber offense picked up  10 hits on the night, all  singles…11 men reached base but only one of them  scored in the 8th inning to  cap off the final 5-1 score

Yankees RISP: 1-9 (McCann 0-1, Refsnyder 0-1, Gregorius 0-1, Beltrán 0-1, Ellsbury 0-2, Teixeira 1-2, Gardner 0-1)
Team LOB: 10

A Lot of Buts

Everybody but Castro had a knock, ARod contributed a pinch  hit single in the 9th when the Bombers put two men on but couldn’t keep  the line moving

Ellsbury and Beltran both  singled in the 1st inning but McCann  and Humpty Teixeira killed the rally..Ref singled in the 3rd inning, was erased on a force out, Gardner ended up on 2nd base, but Ellsbury and Beltran popped up..

Gardner singled in the 6th but was stranded, they got a pair of knocks in the 7th but Ref ended the inning with an F/9, they  scored their only run in the 8th

Gardner walked. 0 5
Ellsbury grounded into fielder’s choice to second, Gardner out at second. 0 5
Beltrán flied out to center. 0 5
McCann singled to left, Ellsbury to second. 0 5
Teixeira singled to center, Ellsbury scored, McCann to second. 1 5
Cedeño relieved Floro. 1 5
Gregorius flied out to center. 1 5
1 RUNS, 2 HITS, 0 ERRORS

The Bombers didn’t lose any ground in the Divisional standing with the O’s losing, they’re still 6 out. They  did lose ground in the more important WC standings with Toronto  and Boston winning, so the Bombers are now 4.5 games behind Boston for the play-in game

  1. Cone nailed it last night, get these young pitchers with a lot of upside pitching for the varsity.. this is the best the Yanks staff has been all year

  2. The Miller for Giolito rumors were off the charts, the media fired that one up without Washington’s input lol

If the rumor is true, I agree on holding out for more then the #1 pitching prospect in baseball.. Cashman has a little bit of leverage based on how bad Giolito has looked in his last two starts for DC

The Mets got him the 2nd time around, and the Mets couldn’t hit the ground if they were sky diving over the desert

  4. Nationals take Melancon and give Cashman the finger.. I don’t blame Cash, needed to get back a few top 5 guys.. the kids the Pirates got back aren’t ranked.. this kid throws 100 but has a plus 4 ERA with the varsity

This kid is a 5th round draft choice

It’s Rivero and Hearn ONLY for Melancon, source says. That’s pretty impressive from #Nats perspective. Kept all top prospects.

  6. Lots of teams are needing catchers,I think the Yanks should take the opportunity to get rid of McCann!!
Even if they don’t get back a top prospect,it would clear some salary room which is what Hal is interested in. They are treating Arod worse than they treated Bernie Williams and Posada when they wanted to get rid of them. Now there are stories of him taking grounders at first after all. Then he got a pinch single last night,I would much rather see him in there over Hicks. The team is truly boring to watch, there is no one
exciting that you want to see hit, other than Arod. The Yankee front office thinks Hicks is a diamond in the rough, unfortunately its covered by 2 tons of shit.

    • Hey Big D, San Diego is eating Upton money and Kemp money but Hal refuses to eat any of his albatross contracts #stubborn

I did read where the Braves didn’t want to part with prospects, and they want McCann down to $12M per, Yanks would need to eat $10M which would go against their Luxury tax, I can see Hal starting to cold sweat lol

Braves might be their only shot, McCann has a full no trade, Sanchez is out of options, McCann is blocking the whole procedure

  7. Carlos Danger caught napping again in RF
Cant get rid of him fast enough.
Ef his HR’s,, he is a slug

    • poor bastid is a DH Donny, can’t blame him, blame the guy who gave him 3 yr’s, (Cashman) blame the guy who won’t either play ARod then bats him 4th (girardi) or DFA him ( Hal) can’t have it both ways Yankees

So we’ll no doubt go to the 2nd half with this team, it’s not looking like Cashman can get his asking price for any of the expiring assets because he needs to trade players, get huge overpay returns, but still make it look like no white flag is flying where Old Glory used to be

a fine mess we’re in boys,

  8. Beltran in RF at the Trop, ARod who hasn’t played all week batting clean-up whiffs 4 times smh

This Owner, this manager, and this GM should all be fired

Chapman blew a save in Chicago lol Party at Mike Rizzo’s house, not that Washington was gonna cough up prospects, Rizzo likes his prospect porn more then Ben Cherington

Yanks are a mess and today’s loss should end the facade… that’s the problem they would need to play playoff baseball from mid July to the end of September and this team as constructed can’t pull that off in this non PED era

    #backupthetruck

Then again what are you getting back for this trash?

  9. one thought in an effort to ride it out with ARod at full time DH, Beltran needs to be traded now that they lost the Tampa series regardless of the return, or this BS will continue the whole 2nd half where ARod sits until he sees a LHP, then he’s rusty and useless because Beltran needs to Dh

Put a fork in it Hal, can’t lose a series to Tampa and still play make believe playoff run

If NY only comes out of this big chance to get younger with nothing but Gleyber Torres, it’s a friggin travesty

it should no longer be #TeamSell but #SellTeam.. Get out Hal, go do something you like son, leave the baseball to folks who know what their doing

  10. Sal its just a sad,bad situation. Smyly won his 3rd game, now 3-11,2 of his wins vs the Yanks, his last win vs them in May!!! WTF!!! Arod finally gets a chance and gets the golden sombrero,4ks!!! Eovaldi pitched well, you have to wonder why he brought in gidrool Swarzak instead of Warren. PsychoJoe gave some bs answer in the post game,he screwed it up. I saw an article by Sensei Sherman about the Braves wanting McCann back after I posted-great minds think alike!!!-lol I’m kidding,I just want him gone. How can you figure the Braves, after going in the tank decide to get Kemp and looking into McCann. Yanks may not be able to get back great prospects, but they can at least get some salary relief by dumping some of these pieces of dreck. Do something to drum up some excitement, right now they are the cure for insomnia.

    • hey Big D, yeah I know you’ve been on moving McCann I agree totally with you, glad to see Sherman does too….

Let’s see what they do tomorrow, I was thinking they needed to know if they were gonna win this series, now that t they lost it time to move, tomorrow Cashman needs to pull the trigger on everything he’s put together

I just don’t want to see Miller go for anything less then what Boston gave up for Kimbrel, which means at least a kid like Manual Margot, that deal the Pirates got for Melancon on paper isn’t as good as the Chapman trade

smh on bringing in Swarzak, unless Psycho Joe is trying to lose in an effort to stop the madness

  11. San Diego DFA’s Olivero in about 5 minutes, makes eating the Kemp money even more impressive

  12. Miller shoulda stayed a Yankee !
He was a true Pinstriper imo,,
    Cashman and Girardi really suck.
    SUCK
