Tex Turns The Tables

with 7 comments

“It’s the smart move. Teixeira was always smarter.”

Mark Teixeira, like fictional character Sal Tessio, is intelligent and is always one step ahead of his competition.. And like Tessio, Humpty Teixeira  was known to keep his business and personal life separate….

Yesterday’s bombshell announcement that he was retiring after this season, despite his fondness for the Pinstripe, was an unexpected but  overt message that Tex had learned from the character assassinations of Bernie, Jeter, Jorge, and now his BFF A-Rod, what  a formidable advisory the Al Yankzeera front office can be if you land on the bad side of an  expiring contract

Thanks to A-Rod’s lightning rod persona and his checkered past, Teixeira has managed  to escape the full  frontal  assault and embarrassment that the chief Moola’s  at Al Yankzeera are capable of generating

The media is treating Tex with a dash of respect, so unlike Jorge, Jeter, and now Alex,  they’re waxing poetic  win win on  a contract  that “let’s be honest” had it’s ups and downs over the last 8 seasons..

At his best, Teixeira,  who  was drafted in 2001 by the Texas Rangers with the fifth overall pick, was a Hall of Fame player..

The 3 preeminent seasons of his entire career happened  from  2004 to 2006, at ages 24 to 26. He compiled 114 HR’s, 367 RBI’s, his 2005 slash line was an MVP caliber .301 .379 .575 .954, in 2 of the 3 yr’s he played in all 162 games, and he complimented  all of  this elite offensive prowess, and durability, with gold glove caliber defense

Tex was  quickly  morphing into the quintessential early 2000’s elite free agent.. Smaller market (at the time)  teams like Texas, Atlanta, and Anaheim knew they  wouldn’t be able to  control him after his arbitration years evaporated so  he was traded for prospect hauls, 2 times…

The Rangers got back the biggest group of prospects in their efforts to develop a future core when Tex was jettisoned to the Atlanta Braves

In July 2007, two weeks after turning down an eight-year, $140 million contract extension from the Rangers, Teixeira was traded to the Atlanta Braves (along with left-handed reliever Ron Mahay) for catcher/first baseman Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and four prospects: shortstop Elvis Andrus, and starting pitchers Matt Harrison, Neftalí Feliz and Beau Jones.

Atlanta was a nice landing spot  for Teixeira, he  played college ball at Georgia Tech, so  he  was an immediate fan fav, he married a Georgia Peach so his home fires were burning, and he piled up  enough stats to propel him deep into  King’s Ransom territory as a  soon to be Free Agent

After spending a productive year  and a half in Atlanta, Tex was traded to  the contending Angels where he just  tore it up down the stretch.. Teixeira was now the quintessential right place, right time MLB player, and Free Agency was ready to set his immediate, and a bunch of Teixeira families down  the road up  for a long long time

In July 2008, Teixeira was traded to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for Casey Kotchman and minor league pitcher Stephen Marek.[15] Batting third in the Angel order, Teixeira hit .358 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs after the trade to help his new team to their first 100-win season in franchise history. Through 2011, he was one of seven major leaguers to have had at least four 30-homer, 100-RBI seasons in their first five years, along with Chuck Klein, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Ralph Kiner, Albert Pujols, and Ryan Braun.[16]

Teixeira made his postseason debut with a .467 batting average, 7 hits and an RBI. His new team of the Angels would lose the 2008 ALDS to the Boston Red Sox in 4 games. Teixeira declared for free agency at the end of the season.

The Teixeira Sweepstakes were won by the uber aggressive NYY’s who spent $82.5M for A J Burnett, $161M for CC Sabathia, and $181M for Teixeira, in an  effort to  make entering the new Mall on Rivera Avenue more attractive… What  flew under the radar was a $5.5M Andy Pettitte contract

At age  29 Tex was great his first  season  with the Yanks

39 HR’s, 122 RBI’s,  .292 .383 .565 .948..

The playoffs were another story, he was never able to match his historic 2008 walk yr 4 game  Anaheim vs Boston playoff numbers 467 .550 .467 1.017

The closest he ever came was 2012 in a 5 game Baltimore series .353 .500 .353 .853.. In 5 ALDS, 3 ALCS, and 1 World Series Tex hit 3 HR’s and knocked in 14 RBI’s..

Tex’s numbers began to regress as the seasons wore on, and his exorbitant contract juxtaposed to the front office wanting to  now cut payroll with the new CBA Lux Tax strangling their profit margin, slowly became a bone of contention…

For the first  3 seasons, Tex gave  the Yanks durability and power numbers, but his pull happy approach of HR or nothing killed his BA… His failures in clutch  situations calling for just  a base hit, not so much a HR, became a daily frustrating occurrence, especially in an  era deploying sophistcated shifts that  were kryptonite to pull happy sluggers like Teixeira

For the next 4 yr’s of his 8 yr contract previous to  2016 (2012 to 2015)  Teixeira played in only 372 games, an average of 93  per season, his high water mark, 123 twice, his bottoming out season, 11. This year he’s trying to  grind through a 162 game schedule, so  far he’s played in 78 of the 109  Bombers games.

He’s obviously banged up, so he’s in an out of the line-up every few days.. With the Yanks now transparent RE: their re-build, Teixeira isn’t a cumbersome weight to haul  around..

His newish approach of hitting line to line, although too little too late, is something everybody but Teixeira and his Bone Headed manager saw as something he needed to  start  doing, has become a refreshing watch

Had he complied to  the change sooner, It would have made him a more exciting and complete player… That in itself would have justified the 8 yr $181M contract, that he was desperately trying to defend by being an  exclusive “ I get paid to hit HR’s and  RBI’s” guy”

I don’t think many fans are upset when Psycho Joe sits Tex, Refsynder and Romine have gotten  a chance to expand their value by adding another defensive position to  their game

Psycho Joe may have just  added to  the Teixeira playing time drama by mentioning that Tyler Austin has now resurfaced as Greg Bird’s competition starting in 2017.. That’s fine, it’s not a bad problem to have, Bird has had health issues, but if he’s healthy and productive, Austin, if his recent play is a trend and not an outlier can  also play  the OF

“Greg Bird is a young man who came up and did a really good job for us. Obviously he is coming off an injury and our hope is that he will play fall ball and he will be ready to go next year,” Girardi said of Bird, who is taking batting practice in Tampa.

Then there is Austin, a 22-year-old who was drafted in the 13th round in 2010, battled testicular cancer and was dropped from the 40-man roster last season.

“This is another guy we feel can come up and impact the team,” Girardi said of the right-handed hitting Austin, who was batting .319 with 13 homers, 47 RBIs and a 1.055 OPS going into Friday night’s action. “We are all excited from what we are seeing from Tyler Austin. Look at his numbers at Triple-A, they are off the charts. We feel that he is going to be an option. We feel that we have options in house. Tyler Austin was a big prospect for us and he went through some injuries. He is healthy and playing extremely well and something we will take a look at.”

Now that P-Joe has stirred the burning coals, when is CashMan  expected to  bring Austin up? The Yanks are trying to  fake a playoff run while they fake the next  3 weeks playing with 24 men until September when A-Rod can be just  another one of the boys talking shop as the rosters expand

Or if Hal is really serious about making a run for the Wild Card,  He’ll  dump A-Rod today. Can’t you see Levine’s plan?  Alex  fesses up  to  the media that he’s been hiding a Tweener  injury, but it’s gotten to painful  to continue and he’s hitting the 15 day DL…..

Boom, instant 25 man roster until September…Except there is one minor hitch in dumping A-Rod, Dumpty Rodriguez’s contract

$30M marketing agreement based on home run milestones, paying $6M each for reaching 660, 714, 755 and tying (762) and breaking (763) major league HR record

As Noogs pointed out  yesterday, that 714 has $6M attached to it, and we know Hal has been throwing money around like man-hole- covers the last  2 seasons after getting burned by Tanaka, Ellsbury and McCan’t

He’s already into A-Rod for about $28M guaranteed, 18 more Taters and the bill escalates to  $34M.. The HR’s are now tainted, so  they’re not worth the contract paper they’re written on

Unless you’re a charity

According to the statement, $3.5 million of the initial $6 million figure will be donated to an assortment of charities. Specifically, $1 million will go to charities including Special Warriors Foundation and Boys & Girls Club of Tampa.

The remaining $2.5 million will be donated to the MLB Urban Youth Foundation, with commissioner Rob Manfred consulting Rodriguez about which initiatives the money will support.

Of course Al Yankzeera will  deny they’re benching A-Rod to keep him from breaking the Babe’s 714, but if you’re protecting a Brand, who’s face do  you want on that HR plaque, the Babe’s or Dumpty Rodriguez?

And of course Junior Steinbrenner needs to keep his squeaky clean image in tact so when some wise ass media scribe brings up  the charity diss, expect Brillo Levine to settle all  family business with one nasty quote

“So you guys with  nothing more important to write about than to write nonsense about this?”

“When we decide to become charity contributors— if we decide to become charity contributors — or if we decide to become charity cases ourselves , you’ll know about it,”

“But I guess the difference is that most of you guys have never run anything and we have a lot of history here of knowing what we’re doing, a lot of confidence in our baseball operations people. So we’ll see what happens. All the rest of it is just noise.”

  1. Nice crazy win last night, great to see Sanchez mow down two runners, get two hits, the kid has a knack for hitting doubles, looks damn good with the tools on too….

Ref got a few knocks, great night for Castro Mikey 2 Chins must have had a bad evening his two whipping boys did real well last night

Lets either play ARod or get Austin or Judge up here…Those guys should be rotating DH first base and a corner…Tex is a usable platoon, if they can’t do the same for Alex then they’re impacting a future players growth

The fan base would rarther watch a kid play then Alex sitting on the bench.. make a move Al Yankzeera…

  4. Love the Sal Tessio reference Sally Boy! You hit it right on the sweet spot of the bat when you correctly referenced Yankee treatment of fading icons Bernie, Jeter, Posada, & Arod. Especially in the Bernie/Posada reference. Clearly, the Yanks (Psycho Joe), disrespected & marginalized Posada at the end. When he had problems hitting right-handers, PJ limited his truncated AB’s, never giving him the chance to get something going. And when he didn’t, he held up his lack of production as to why he wasn’t in the lineup. It was absolutely disgusting how they treated him at the end. Causing him to explode one night when he found out he was batting 8th or 9th one night, I believe. And the did the same thing to Bernie, inviting him to SP as a non roster invitee. Disgusting!!! Now they’re doing the same thing to Arod. Granted, he’s been a mess this season with his mechanics. But he had a brief run of turning it around, but then got hurt & since returning has not been able to get it going again. Just like Posada, they’re doing the same to him. Limiting his AB’s, citing lack of production, he’s caught in a catch 22 situation just like Posada. Deplorable!!!

  5. Back to reality today. There was an article in the post about how long CC will stay in the rotation,he has been horrible lately. Yes,they have been deplorable in their treatment of Arod. During Tex’s retirement conference, they showed all the Yankees watching it,including Arod. You could imagine each one of them thinking about how their own careers will end. Most of the time it isn’t pretty. Yanks announced another press conference with Arod,Cashman and PsychoJoe for tomorrow morning. I have read every online newspaper, every baseball writers twitter(thanks for posting them Sal) and NO ONE knows what will happen at the conference. Somehow I don’t think Arod will retire and forget about the $21 million he is owed for next year. He could announce that he is taking off the rest of the year and will get ready for spring training. The Yanks could release him, even though they have said 500 times they won’t. So we will have to wait until tomorrow to find out for sure.
