Miracle at One Royal Way

with 17 comments

The Yankees 68-63 and Royals 69-63 are both  6.5 games out of a Division lead.. After the Bombers improbable 5-4 miracle win in 10 innings last night, KC fell to 3 games behind Baltimore, while the Yanks jumped over the Mariners, but  are still 3.5 games and 4 teams behind the 2nd Wild Card spot…

The World Champion Royals had been eating real estate at a .818 WP pace  over the last 24 games, and were making a push  to meet the #1 seed Red Sox for a right to be the Wild Card entree.. If they  fall  short by 1 game, you can circle August 30 / 31st as their worse loss of the season…

The Bombers were quickly losing games and days off the calendar after two debilitating losses to  the O’s and Royals, another loss, this time with Tanaka on the bump, and it’s safe to  say the rebuilding Bombers were starting to  circle the drain…

The Royals have regained their swagger, and despite having the disappointing Eddie Volquez as their next day’s starter, they play the game like a team that knows before all  27 outs have been exhausted, they’ll have scored at least 1 more run then you have….

Tanaka 5 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 K’s 71 pitches was in charge with a 4-2 lead until  an hour rain delay ended his night after 5 innings..

Unfortunately the Yanks had a chance to gidrool proof this game, but they  went an alarmingly bad 2 for 16 with RISP, and only 1 of those hits, the 10th inning infield single by the DoughBoy actually scored a run

Yankees RISP: 2-16 (Sánchez 0-4, McCann 1-1, Gregorius 0-3, Castro 0-2, Judge 0-2, Austin 0-2, Ellsbury 1-2)
Team LOB: 13

The Bombers 3 best hitters Sanchez, D-Gregorius, and Castro  went a combined 0-9 with RISP, the two other kids Judge and Austin 0-4

Judge did break his 1 for 20  slide with a well hit 2 run HR in the 2nd inning, but for the most part Da Judge can’t seem to handle MLB breaking pitches, last night he was punched out twice in key RBI spots, once in the 3rd and again in the 10th

Gary Sanchez has played in 23 games in August, he’s had at least 1 hit in 20 of those games.. He’s presently working on an 8 game hitting streak so  to say he’s starting to level out after striking out 6 times in his last 17 AB’s, and last night leaving a small army on base might be a bit harsh..

Obviously the reason the Bombers have taken off in August, they finally got a middle of the order slugger to rack up  total bases at  an  alarming rate, and Sanchez providing that heavy lifting is at the top of the list….

It’s a compliment to D-Gregorius and Castro that Psycho Joe has them batting clean-up  and 5th in the line-up, but unless Sanchez remains Superman, the offense is gonna struggle from time to  time with out more heavy artillery lengthening  1 through 9

That said we can  sort of get a glimpse of what  the middle of the order can be if Judge, Bird, and Sanchez are anchoring those spots.. Bird and Sanchez have tasted success, Judge has shown glimpses, but he’s still  a work in progress…

Float in Frazier, D-Gregorius, Castro, in two yr’s Rutherford and Mateo / Torres / Wade, and right now Refsynder, who has hit better at the varsity level  then Austin…  Austin does have power potential, and Ref hasn’t indicated that’s part of his game yet

The key offensive player last night was Ellsbury, 4 hits, a double , 2 RBI’s and the game winning knock

Captain Gardner was also in the middle of keeping the line moving by getting on base 5 times, 2 hits and 3 BB’s…. He also made a few great  defensive plays

McCann picked up  3 hits, and scored a run.. He too  was in the line moving business, 2 of the 3 hits were to left field, one to  center field… These are favorable trends for McCann.. If Bubba can take advantage of defensive shifts, he’ll become a much more valuable offensive player, despite his lack of base running prowess..

With Tanaka gone after the rain, Psycho Joe needed to get 12 outs with just  two decent relievers, Clippard  and Betances, now that  Adam Warren  has been demoted to  Gidrool Central

Why Severino isn’t here as a reliever weapon is beyond any type of practical comprehension, but we hear he’ll be here by Friday September 2nd..

The 40 man roster crunch is keeping some of the better reliever depth off the varsity, kids like Jonathan  Holder and Champ Adams will need to be protected this winter

The Yanks will have Mitchell  and Severino both  coming out of the pen here in September

Anyway Warren gave up  a single and a double and was relieved by Tommy Layne who  was bailed out by Clippard who  threw a Houdini DP to  end the 6th inning with the Yanks hanging onto  a 4-3 lead

Clippard worked around a lead off walk and an error to  escape the 7th still leading 4-3.. Not sure why Psycho Joe would allow Clippard to  start  the 8th knowing he’s gone if a runner gets on base, which Cain did on a lead off walk…

If Betances has an Achilles Heel it’s runners stealing bases off him, base stealers are 18 for 18, why not let Betances start a fresh 6 out save??? Cain stole 2nd and eventually scored on a productive out and a sac fly to  tie the game 4-4

Betances held serve in the 9th, the Yanks scored off of Soria in the 10th

Soria relieved Strahm. 4 4
McCann singled to left. 4 4
Hicks ran for McCann. 4 4
Headley singled to center, Hicks to second. 4 4
Judge struck out swinging. 4 4
Austin struck out swinging. 4 4
Hicks to third, Headley to second on wild pitch by Soria. 4 4
Gardner walked. 4 4
Ellsbury reached on infield single to third, Hicks scored, Headley to third, Gardner to second. 5 4
Sánchez fouled out to first. 5 4
1 RUNS, 3 HITS, 0 ERRORS

Fortunately Gardner and Ellsbury picked up Judge and Austin

Heller and Shreve did the impossible by closing out the bottom of the 10th after the bases were loaded with only 1 out

Key AB’s: Heller punching out Cain with men on 2nd and 3rd 1 out..

Shreve punching out Morales on 3 pitches with the bases loaded 1 out, then getting Perez on an innocuous F/8 to  end it

BEN HELLER PITCHING FOR NEW YORK NYY KC
Heller relieved Betances. 5 4
Mondesi hit by pitch. 5 4
Mondesi stole second. 5 4
Dyson singled to center, Mondesi to third. 5 4
Dyson stole second. 5 4
Cain struck out swinging. 5 4
Hosmer intentionally walked. 5 4
Shreve relieved Heller. 5 4
Morales struck out swinging. 5 4
Pérez flied out to center. 5 4
0 RUNS, 1 HITS, 0 ERRORS

  2. Had to attend the Mets game last night for business. Left in the 7th to get home for the 7th in our game. Whatta finish! I woulda bet the house they lose that one. Helluva surprise.
Judge has been a streaky hitter in the minors, but getting a schooling on slow breaking pitches going down & away in the Majors.
When going good, he shows restraint in that area. But when going bad, he goes fishing. Must have better plate discipline going forward. Right now, he’s a baby. Hopefully, this will all come.

  7. I want to build a wall around Joe Espada and send him back to Mexico. Worst fkn 3b coach in the majors.
If they can’t score off Chris Young, they should just leave for Baltimore now.
