In Memory of

Lu’ie the First

Billy bull’s eye Stafford

Seeing Luis Severino  storm out of the bull pen yesterday  to save PineTar Pineda’s sinking ship brought back memories of Little Luis  Arroyo  and his days as a Bomber reliever / Life Savor / Fireman..

They  didn’t call them  weapons back  then, but that’s exactly what Luis Severino is when he’s deployed out of the pen, a seek and destroy laser show..( sorry Midget Pedroia)

David Cone crystalized Severino’s appearance perfectly from my vantage point, mentioning Severino’s aggressiveness is more suited for a sprint then an marathon.. His instincts can  take over, and he doesn’t have to game plan  3 or  4 times around a line-up, so  you’re getting max effort Severino in short spurts, which is Nasty..See Betances

The way  young arms are just  evaporating off the shelf due to  injuries, not just in NY but across the board in baseball, it’s not the craziest notion building a pitching staff from the back to the front, especially in September when  you can  carry 3 or 4 extra arms in the pen

Of course Severino  wants to be a starter, that’s where the money is, but he might be too valuable as a Weapon out of the Pen

Luis Severino has faced 40 batters as a reliever. And allowed exactly 1 hit.

Luis Severino as a reliever:
11.1 IP
0 ER/1 R
1 H
13 K
5 BB

Weird statistical fact: over the last 15 games, the Yankees have either scored 5+ runs or no runs.

Based on statements from  the Yankees lunatic manager, the Yanks are a day to day proposition, thanks to  a 5-2 win, their season remains on life support

“probably the most important game of the year.”

For the umpteenth time this season, Psycho Joe  mentioned tomorrow’s game as a must win…No doubt another Baltimore ass whipping would have started the long and winding funeral march down Rivera Avenue..

This morning we give thanks that Bucky permanent frown Showalter ran out of decent pitching, and that his Beltway Bombers  were too  tired from beating on Yankee gidrools for the last two nights, to hit any HR’s, so  they  could only dial up  2 runs..

Somehow the Yanks managed to  score 5 runs on 6 singles, and somehow PineTar Pineda managed to  escape the first inning without giving up  a run, or blowing the 3 run lead his offense had scratched and clawed to get him..

In “the most important game of the year” Psycho Joe benched the DougBoy, Bubbles McCan’t, Humpty Teixeira, and the injured D-Gregorius..”Let’s be honest”, the only player in that posse you missed was D-Gregorius

For some reason, and of course it had to  do with binder match-ups, Psycho Joe pulled both Refsynder and Romine, Ref in the 7th, Romine in the 6th, for two baggage claim duds the Doughboy and McCan’t.

Refsynder was 1 for 2 with a walk and  2 runs scored, he was part of setting the table for a 3 run 1st inning, and he scored the 4th run after a knock in the 3rd..

Romine drove in 2 of the 3 first inning runs with a clutch  single in the hole to left..Headless went 2 for 3 with a walk, and 2 RBI’s, a 1st inning RBI single, and an infield single that scored Refsynder in the 3rd

Showalter removed Miley who sucked, after 5 innings, with the O’s chipping a 4-0 lead down to  4-2.. In came RHP Worley, and after a Headless walk out went Romine for Bubbles McCan’t who promptly went down on an F/8..

Judge shocked the world hitting a single but Austin  and Torreyes couldn’t get the RISP home..

In the 7th Captain Gardner drew a base on balls, and of course Psycho Joe pinch hit for Refsynder, with  the DoughBoy… Boom, a quick 6-4-3 DP to kill the inning…

Bubbles McCan’t and the DougBoy went on to make 2 more outs, the DoughBoy did make a nice catch to  end the game, but nothing Captain Gardner couldn’t have done.. I do get the defensive replacement for Refsynder, but the pinch hitting was more Psycho Joe BS…

Austin was gifted a 2 base error in the 9th by Trumbo, Torreyes who is a utility keeper, sacrificed him to  3rd, and Gardner tacked on the 5th  run with a sac fly… It all  worked out, but why give Baltimore the free out, let Torreyes use his bat, maybe something sneaks through…

PineTar Melting

I’ve seen butter in a hot frying pan melt slower then PineTar Pineda does in a big spot..

“I competed on the mound today, and I tried to win it,” Pineda said. He did strand five base runners, three in scoring position. Nevertheless, for a guy with a 172-to-42 strikeout-to-walk ratio, he causes more scratched heads than dandruff.

Pineda is a nice kid, if he could bottle repeatability, he’d be a bad man, but of course we know his sample size has proven he’s a blind date, or a box of chocolates…

Yesterday PinHeada was the snobby good looking blind date, the only 3 words she say’s all night is, “you’re it, really?”

So his outing was really no fun to  watch, despite some eye candy on 4 punch outs…

Pineda was a rocky 4 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 2 BB’s, 4 K’s, 87/53, 5.10 ERA

In the first inning Pineda went from pedestrian coughing up  a pair of singles, to brilliant during his 2 punch outs, stopping a potential rally that  would have erased the 3-0 lead..

He escaped a lead off walk in the 2nd, had a clean 1-2-3 third, but  a walk, a single, and  a ground-out made it 4-1 after 4 innings..

A lead off single, and an Alverez RBI double ended his day in the 5th

Severino came in to put out the fire…

After a battle with 3 of the biggest Beltway Bombers, and three  of their running partners, Luis may have accomplished a big part in saving the Bomber season with his 2 innings of shut out ball…

Severino relieved Pineda. 4 2
Álvarez to third on wild pitch by Severino. 4 2
Machado struck out swinging. 4 2
Trumbo walked. 4 2
Davis walked, Trumbo to second. 4 2
Pearce struck out swinging. 4 2
Wieters grounded out to second.

Severino had a 1-2-3 dominant 6th inning… Layne and Warren cleaned up  the 7th, and Clippard 0.2, Betances 1.1 innings, finished it off…

The Bambino’s

Gary Sanchez’s return to earth continued Sunday, as he went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks.

The catcher finished the trip with four hits in 23 at-bats, with two runs, a double, four walks and a HBP.

“I think it’s a normal correction,” Girardi said of Sanchez’s cooling off.

So  the gasbags call cooling off, market correction, how analytical…….Sanchez taking two  walks was a good sign for me.. Judge running into  a pitch in the zone hopefully helps relax him some..

The win makes it 3.5 back, a loss would have been 5.5 and the mechanical trumpet would be blowing Taps, on a friggin loop….

It won’t get any easier with Toronto coming to  town, maybe keep  that trumpet plugged in..

the Whole 9

  1. Just keep loading the wagon Luis, work on your command, stay healthy, do something smart everyday, and eventually you’ll get a chance to eat 7 innings every 5 days and make enough money to start your own Baseball Academy in the Dominican …..

  3. “I’ve seen butter in a hot frying pan melt slower than PineTar Pineda does in a big spot”
    Now that……is just brilliant!!!
    Kudos Sal!

I too, was dismayed when Joey Binder took Refsnyder & Romaine Empire out for “match ups”. They both contributed to the game, in a winning way, only to be taken out for 2 guys who’ve been a big part of the problem here.

Loved the pic at the headline. ’61 Yanks, team of my youth. Btw, did anyone notice Houk in a suit in the upper right side of the photo?

  4. Uncharacteristic Tanaka ahead in every count and he’s getting tattooed on 2 strike counts

Good thing Joey Bats is a moron or he scores on the SanBino drop

    September 5, 2016 at 1:21 pm

    • Yes the doughboy back in the friendly confines sell high

SanBino hitting them where they ain’t

      But Headless cleaning up?

  5. Great pic and article about Stafford. Moscone, sharp to catch Houk!! The 61 Yanks were the best, better than the 98 team. Shocker Ellsbury hits a 2 run homer!!! Check the bat-lol Yesterday he was up twice, swung at the first pitch both times, saw 3 total pitches and made 3 outs hitting for Refsnyder. We were all anxious to see the youngsters, now have to be patient when they struggle.

    September 5, 2016 at 1:31 pm

    • Hey Big D, moscone misses nothing when it comes to wine women and the Bombers, he’s pretty amazing…….My Uncle Beansy was a poor man’s moscone, he practically lived at Yankee Stadium, in fact, they wanted him to be a minority owner, but he told them he had no Black or Latin in his blood line……..

I was watching Moncada yesterday, and Jackson and a reliever worked him over pretty good with sliders, these kids don’t see those types of pitches in fast ball counts down on the farm, even the SanBino if taking his lumps…

Psycho joe ought to piss off the DoughBoy more often, that’s the best managerial move he made in 2 months, Lying about Ellsbury’s health lol

  6. So happy to see that strunzt Joey Bats pull a boneheaded play by going to 3rd & making the last out down by 4 runs. Arrogant SOB!

TJ Tanakasan doing it with mirrors today. Doesn’t have his best stuff, but grinding it thru.
    You watching this Pinetop???

Hey Big D! Loved the ’61 Yanks! I was 9 yrs old for that team! What a squad!!

    September 5, 2016 at 2:56 pm

    • hey bondsie, yeah when JoeyBats makes a stunod it’s always good…Wait until E-Encarnacion is walking the parrot in Boston laundry, we might have to tie the the DonB down

      September 6, 2016 at 6:35 am

  7. Who misses those two we traded away today ??

    September 5, 2016 at 3:14 pm

    Lying Joe lol

Hey fellas great win today, psycho Joe might wanna give Layne a bit more rope, Holder and Heller were scared shitless facing those big boppers

I’m glad they made the trades but this team would be scary if they still had Beltran Chappy and Miller add Sanchez, Ref, Austin, and Torreyes and Bobs your uncle

Tomorrow might be another story with Cessa on the bump

I didn’t notice the Major good eye mB

  10. Sal—great article on Billy. Thanks for finding it and posting it. The writer did a ton of research as it is totally accurate with amazing detail.
I’m sure his son, Michael, who was friends with my two boys, provided much of the detail.
Billy was great at golf, basketball, bowling and even ping pong. He was the most gifted and natural athlete I had the pleasure of knowing and spending time with. He died way too young.
    Thanks again.

    September 5, 2016 at 10:21 pm

    • My pleasure Noogsie, Uncle Beansy made sure we were all Billy fans back in the day.. We did a gig in Athens this summer, took me back to 61 again….

Severino coming out of the pen reminded me of that team, doesn’t take much, the same first name Luis is all we needed

Glad the story is validated, it’s a great one, and that photo is priceless
